Nostalgia, a sentimental longing for the past, is a very common and highly social-emotional experience. It is centered around the self, important social connections, and meaningful life events. In other words, when our mind drowns itself in these sentimental memories, it makes us revisit the precious moments we shared with friends and loved ones.
So to invite you on a new trip down memory lane, we at Bored Panda are continuing our series on the popular subreddit r/Nostalgia, and have once again compiled its best recent posts. Continue scrolling to check them out, and if you missed our earlier publications, catch up here, here, and here.

Who Remembers Making Textbook Covers From Grocery Bags In The Late 1970s And 80s?
Erasers That Never Erased Anything
Research often shows that nostalgia is a primarily positive emotion that can lift people's spirits. But in these studies, participants are usually asked to recall a past event that makes them feel most nostalgic, and the Dornsife team at the University of Southern California thinks that this approach tends to result in people recalling a unique and overly positive, fond memory.
They have found the opposite may be true. Just like in Bruce Springsteen’s nostalgic song Glory Days, people look back to the good times when they feel dissatisfied with their current life.

I still have mine, in working condition. Mind you, I grew up in post communist Romania, so having this was the utter most lavish thing my parents could afford. But it made my teenage years so much better
I have mine too! My wife finally made me ditch it, but I put it in the garage and use it when I'm doing work projects.
Load More Replies...Ahhh, and let's not forget the most important button of them all...MEGA Bass!!
Oh the double cassette, that rocked my world (and made me a few $ but I can't say how 😆)
I miss having a system like this.. with 3 cd slots at the top.. it was so cool!
This isn’t quite the boom box with detachable speakers that I got for a high school graduation gift in 1993. It lasted me through the whole CD era and i could record CDs on tape to play in the car.
The stereo broke but I still got the glow in the dark solar system in the room that was my bedroom as a kid and is now my library
I had a 52 disc cd player...it was awesome! I made it my goal to get enough cds for the thing to hold. I had 50 by the end
Same!! I saved up and also got a 10 disc changer for my car!
Load More Replies...I was soooooo excited when I finally got one of these! I think I was the first one in my subdivision to get it. 3 disc changer and a double cassette,.. I mean you could listen to music for hours without getting up. Who knew one day you could listen to music for days if you wanted to!
I had one almost exactly like this. Only got rid of it because the CD part stopped working.
Thrift stores are loaded with the speakers from these systems because they never gave up before some component of the stereo did. The Aiwa ones are a good buy for basic speaker needs.
Load More Replies...I had one of these in my barracks when i was in the navy. The 3 disc changers were notorious for malfunctioning
Why do I feel attacked. I have a few glow in the dark stars on my ceiling with a radio AND both speakers are extended 2 feet apart.
I still have mine too! Unfortunately this is what ruined Santa for me when my stepdad pulled out the instructions. What guy gets out instructions?!!!
i've had hi fi's and ghetto blasters but not this design and no I was never allowed to have a solar system on the ceiling. Dad was adamant that ALL ceilings remain white.
Don't forget the Christmas lights plugged into the speaker jacks, so they light up with the bass...
I sold mine to a friend about 10years ago. I told him to hold onto it, because that'll be the last cassette player he ever experienced.
The double cassette deck was the newest thing you could own then, I tell you. 😂
I still have my older brothers old one minus the original speakers, but I still have the remote and it still works.
😂 had mine back in the 80's! It was a status symbol for teens back then. And the Bigger, the Better!
Oh yes! With a double cassette deck to copy tapes of your friends, and even better: a cd player! I remember I was sooo happy to finally have one of these to play music in my room! This was something I had to save up for, and now you can buy one for less than 100 euros. But the lower cost comes also with less quality, in my experience.
I've had many stereo systems since 1980's. The ones made in the 70's (my aunt had one of those) were literally indestructible, heavy, and with excellent components. They really could play music! Since then, during the 90's and 00's, the quality of stereo systems went downhill and so did the sound quality. Still, I had one even after I turned 40. Now, at 50, my rec center is my phone plus earphones. Anyone remember the boombox?
Don't look down on this, it's still very good material and I can predict we'll all be happy to have some CDs to listen to when more modern, connected devices get too expensive to produce and use (the energy crisis, you know). I bet this can be powered with a small local generator, solarpunk style.
Peepses I had one with like 20 CD changer! I thought I was the bomb! Lol oh memories
I'm pretty sure I had this exact aiwa when I was about 16. Damn that thing rocked.
I remember that got it for my 16th birthday my parents bought it and my grandma bought me some cds that she asked random workers and people in Walmart what they thought a teenager would like that's how I ended up with Alanis Morissette, Seal, Tori Amos, and Tom Petty
They were so busy wondering if they could do it that they didn't stop to think of they should do it...
So many people had that black and red Magnavox boom box with the double tape deck and "high speed dubbing."
I had a philips FW C399 with X-bass that lasted untill a few years ago when the cd carousel mechanism failed. :( FW_C399_30...c82862.jpg
My parents didn't see the value in it so I finally got the basic 3-cd post-teen years when I could afford it myself. We lived on using the JAMBOX with 2 cassettes. And recording songs off the radio or from other cassettes. I acted like I didn't care about CDs vs cassettes but I admit it, I was just jealous!
I won one of these at my middle school dance! I felt so amazingly cool for one minute of my eighth grade life lol
What is this about a glow in the dark solar system? I had no idea about that
Rear Door Ashtrays; Playing With These As A Kid On Car Rides
"When people are asked to describe something that makes them feel very nostalgic, the positive elements dominate,” said David Newman, the study’s lead author and a Ph.D. candidate at USC Dornsife. “They think of a pleasant past experience, and the memories they bring to mind have a positive influence on how they see their own life.”
So, the USC Dornsife team captured how frequently people may feel nostalgic and how intense their feelings are in daily life. The psychologists asked about 230 undergraduate students, in exchange for course credit, to complete daily questionnaires for 14 days.

These diary studies included questions about whether they had positive or negative interactions with friends or acquaintances, experienced positive moments of achievement, or had negative moments, such as falling behind on coursework.
They also asked about events that could potentially evoke feelings of nostalgia, such as whether the participants had heard a song on the radio that they hadn’t heard in a while.

The results showed that people were likely to feel nostalgic when things were going wrong in the present.
"These negative experiences colored nostalgia in a negative light," Newman said. On days when people felt nostalgic, they reported feeling more stressed, depressed, and lonely; expressed more regret and rumination; were less satisfied with their life, and reported lower self-esteem. They also felt less peaceful and calm and expressed more rumination on the following day.

But although people tend to feel nostalgic when they have had negative experiences, the team of psychologists found another surprising positive correlation.
People were likely to feel nostalgic on days “when they had helped others, were reminded of old friendships or music, felt inspired and engaged in social media use," the researchers explained.

Based on their analysis, Newman and colleagues concluded that nostalgia is a mixed bag — but the mix is decidedly negative in day-to-day life.
"The results from these studies stand in sharp contrast to the prevailing conclusion from previous research, which had indicated that nostalgia is a mixed but predominantly positive emotion,” Newman said.
"Deliberately engaging in the recollection of extremely nostalgic moments may improve well-being,” he said. "But in most situations in daily life, feeling nostalgic may not feel very pleasant."

It's a nice nostalgia trip, but someone really needs to learn what "obsolete" means.
You can still sometimes get them in candy shops. I know of at least 5 places where I live that have them still.

I guess what's nostalgia for some people is 'just a little while ago " for others.
