Photographer Captures People Who’ve Been Bullied For Having A Different Body To Fight Traditional Beauty Standards
574Kviews
Even though beauty is seen differently by everyone, there are some standards that many people chase after. Facial features, body types, eye/hair colors and textures – there are many pieces to this “beauty standard” puzzle.
Francesc Planes, a 22-year-old photographer from Spain, took it upon himself to encourage change. He started a photo series called “Normal”, in which the artist documents bodies that usually do not fit into the frames of “standard beauty”. Francesc captures people in their most vulnerable and pure state – naked.
The main idea behind this project is to celebrate the things that aren’t ‘normal’ but are beautiful and unique.

This was thought provoking. Even the tattoos which had an effect of being so polarizing in the comments. One thing that strikes me is this could be any of us. Today we could be unmarked, smooth conforming to standards of "beauty" and tomorrow we could be a burn victim or an accident victim and that smooth unmarked skin gone. Would our partners still love us? Would they be in love with us still? What if your child was born with these birthmarks. How would your heart feel about them? I wish we could just walk around wearing our souls on the outside.
If you’re interested in exploring this more, u might want to check out the short story “Liking What You See: A Documentary” by Ted Chiang. It’s abt a (fictional) procedure that makes surface looks less compelling, helping a person to see through the eyes of love instead. The guys with the tatoos aren't victims - they're volunteers.
True enough. They were still bullied though, which isn't okay regardless.

legaly it is in fact no crime if you make fun of tattoed people because they decided themselfs to make a fool of them.
Totally agree with this, bullying is terrible outright, but a distinction needs to be made some of these people didn't choose to have the condition they were born with.

Kind of not the point there Nessi V. and ChrisZAUR. It's not really about "legally" not being a crime - seriously?? (hopefully English isn't your first language). It's about the bullying and/or the polarizing. How hard is that to understand? Do you really lower your emotional bar that low that you have to say "legally it isn't a crime to make fun of tattooed people...." or "fat people?" I mean no shit it's not LEGALLY A CRIME! Still do you really want to hurt someone's feelings because you can? Christ on the cross, it's not about what you CAN do, it's about what you SHOULD and SHOULDN'T do.

I use to be a fat until I started dieting and exercise so I feel no sympathy for people who are fat and complain about it, also eating too much mcdonalds is not a medical condition, and why would I care about what you have to say? you are just a random person on the internet that I'm going to forget about after I close this page
"Bullied" because of tattoos? How old were they when they got fecking FACE tattoos!? They clearly aren't Maori.
Especially the guy who is obviously a gang-banger, you usually get those tattoos after the first time you murder someone, so yeah fucking "bullied" boo-hoo.
Right. The second to last guy has a tattoo of a gun pointing at the head of a pleading black man. I have a feeling I know who the true bullies are.
UGH! I didn't even notice that, but now that makes the people talking about "how dare they get bullied - it's THEIR body" look self-righteous and stupid.

I don't feel sorry for the tattooed lads because they made a conscious decision to have this done to their bodies. The others can't help their appearance - and in case anyone thinks I'm being judgemental, I have alopecia, am completely bald and know what it's like.
Bullied for having MS-13 tattoos? Bulled by who exactly? ICE?
The 13 tattoo is a gang tat. I don't feel bad for them.
Seven billion people in the world and you show four? Spent a lot of time working on this huh? Bad tats don't count ; they were a conscious choice.
The other pictures in this series feature much nudity. Did you even bother to look for yourself?
Thankfully for Amaranthim Talon (look in the most downvoted comments of this article) there are no intelligence standard or he would definitely be an outcast loser... Beauty standard as you name it Amaranthim Talon is an illusion created by some ellistists bitches to feel like they are special and to have some more reason to bully, harass, shame people THEY judge not up to this "standard".
"Beauty standard as you name it Amaranthim Talon is an illusion created by some ellistists bitches to feel like they are special" Tell that to any evolutionary biologist. What you are saying is scientifically inaccurate. By the way, you talk about how these "elitist bitches" are harassing bullies while you hurl bullying, harassing insults. Amaranthim could've worded that first part much more gently, but it was just an opinion, followed by niceties. You hurl personal insults of all sorts. That makes you a bully and a hypocrite.f

actually, beauty standard is what people are universally attracted to. And people are not universally attracted to deformities or obesity.
Actually, there is no "beauty standard" to which people are universally attracted. Deformities? In China, deformed feet -- sliced, curled and rendered nonfunctional -- were considered a sign of beauty. Among the Incas, a sloped forehead produced by purposely deforming a child's skull was "beautiful". Unnatural lengthening of the neck was a mark of beauty in some parts of Africa. Fat? Steatopygia has been considered beautiful in some cultures. During the period when Peter Paul Rubens was a celebrated European artist, corpulence in both men and women was considered beautiful. So your statement is just factually wrong. I won't speculate on your motive for posting it.
If there was one single standard everyone was universally attracted to then the standard would be the same throughout history and also in every country throughout the world. If you look back hundreds of years ago people had much different standards for beauty than they do now. You don't even have to look back that far. If there was a universal standard than everyone you asked from UK to Brazil to China to Sudan etc would all have the same answer and that is certainly not the case. It's arbitrary. And also who the hell cares what other people think is attractive or not? Worry about yourself.
Maybe beauty standards appeared because we keep tryng to look our best, but honestly even people with no birth abnormality have a hard time competing with the ideals atm. Because perfection lately is inside photoshop and cam filters.
Those are just normal human bodies, so I see no harm with them. Even the fatter lady, she still looks pretty cute. Tho I'd like to adress her to eat a bit healthier or even exercise, and it doesn't matter if she got more fat from genetics, I'm still worried about her health ;-; I really hope she won't get any heart failures or strokes
I have to totally agree about Alba. Like... the moles - whatever, but the hairy discoloured skin was outright gross for me to look at. Yeah yeah people will say "how dare you!" but that's just my visceral reaction - it looks like something harmful, even if it isn't, it's a natural human reaction.
I totally agree with you. I mean, her marks are innocent, they even make her look cute (atleast for me) and about the back.. well... human's eyes are only acceptable to look at the things that are seen really often. The things that aren't seen as often can be accepted by disguisting by the brain itself and make a person puke or sick. But since I don't mind the people with their uniqueness, I'm perfectly fine on how a human looks.
Catalina Salvatierra, well, how I said, I'm perfectly fine with her, but just how I wrote in another reply - "human's eyes are only acceptable to look at the things that are seen really often. The things that aren't seen as often can be accepted by disguisting by the brain itself and make a person puke or sick. " Don't get me wrong, I'm totally fine with these people in phtos, but it would be a problem for me if I was eating something or else, because I don't see much of these people often, so my brain decides that this is not so beautiful. That's why I mostly rely on science, not feelings, ya know :/

People are all beautifull in different ways. As long as they are healthy. I kinda agree with the 'beauty standart' but not fully. I mean, if a really disguisting person shows up on a restaurant and would make people vomit, then yea...But the people in photographs? They seem normal, and even pretty cool to me. Jordi looks really cool with his eye, he could do pranks :D Alba's face is really cute, and as long as nobody see's her butt, it's totally normal. Guille could scare friends and earn a lot of them for doing that :D I absolutely love Tess's haircut. And tatto guys just look cool with all those tatoos
"Alba's face is really cute, and as long as nobody see's her butt, it's totally normal." Ugh. That's not very understanding, you know? Way to fight for the beauty standards! People are beautiful just the way they are... I have one question though, because of my curiosity. What is alopecia? I looked at the picture and it has something to do with the head, but I am just genuinely confused.
An autoimmune desease that causes hairloss. Usually in spots, but sometimes fully including pubichair, eyelashes and eyebrows.
My long time friend got this. It was so weird seeing him after it happened, but it isn't really a big deal after 5 mins. He was the same old guy. Just had to get a few jokes out of the way and we were tossing back the beers like old times.
Thanks for telling me. :)
"People are beautiful just the way they are." When you first meet a group of potential mates, you are always attracted to them 100% equally at first sight? No? Then you employ beauty standards too. I don't understand all of this fake virtue signalling. It's okay that we are not all on some magical equal footing for everything. That's not how mate selection works with any species.
That is not what I meant, no... but if you think of it that way, that is fine. Opinions are different to people, and people are either going to like or not going to like other people's opinions are. What I meant was that I would not care what they look like as long as they are friendly to me... I would accept them to hang out with me if they said 'hi', or asked me something.
This hits so close to home for me too.... I was bullied so horribly when I was a kid, just because I had two different colour eyes. (One is a light green and one is a dark brown)
нахуя....? :/
Right on! Being yourself and comfortable in your own skin is what I consider true beauty.
What Happened to that girl?! Those marks look like burn marks!
Jordi's eye colour is amazing!
A lot of people are talking about getting tattoos as a choice. Yeah, it is. And do I agree with you? Yeah. But I think that the point of that one is that it's not you, it's not your body and therefore your ideals shouldn't be pushed onto their body. It's still not right to bully someone over their choices. Sure, to talk to them sternly or have a healthy conversation is good - but never to bully. Bullying only ever hurts. After all, if someone was overweight (by choice of an unhealthy lifestyle), is it okay to bully them?
Hmmm, while I agree that it's not right to bully someone for a hair-color or a tat or a piercing or anything, really, I wonder about the gang-tattoos on those young men and the resulting "bullying". Is it really bullying, or are people around them just incredibly shocked by someone displaying their (in the case of the first young man) racist believes so outright? If a young guy in my class or in my work-environment would show those kind of tattoos, I'd try to avoid him, maybe be careful what I say around him, maybe stop conversations that I felt would be offensive to him or might entice him to speak his mind over a subject or a topic. So... that could develop into a bully-feel for the guy. I'm not so sure about how young he was when he got them, maybe the "choice" about the tattoo wasn't very informed. But still - they'd make me incredibly uncomfortable, and it would not as easily pass as with a skin-deformity or hair-color or ... dunno, maybe crooked teeth.
(continued from above) Because I can learn to disregard a body that (at first) makes me uncomfortable once I recognize the person behind it, but in the case of those tattoos, it's an outward sign of what kind of person I'm talking to. I do NOT like associating with racists. If he's not in a gang anymore, not a racist anymore and actually trying to forget or move on from that life - great! Maybe there's hope for a better relationship then. But as it stands, just looking at them... nope. Bullying is not the right way to react to him, but what would be, if your gut-reaction to seeing that much violence painted on someone's skin? Avoidance , I bet.
Yea, so the guy with MS13 tattoos, what death proof badass made fun of him. Because I bet chuck norris calls him when he has a problem.

tbh, beauty is health, and neither obesity, nor physical deformations are health paragons. As for those tattoo guys...get better tattoos, seriously. Because those particular ones are...just bad.
Beauty isn't always health-realted, as there are people with minor cosmetic deformities who are otherwise totally healthy, and beautiful people with health problems, but "get better tattoos" is a very agreeable sentiment.

Honestly- hideous. And I am very sorry for those folks. I hope they have successful and happy lives, honestly- but there is a reason there are "beauty standards".
and that reason is....?
To make people self conscious I guess
It's a shame there are no 'personality standards', we could use them with people like Amaranthim Talon running around.
The reason is genetics. There are zero species who are absolutely indiscriminate when it comes to the physicality of their mates. People being "classically" beautiful is a hint that their genes are good genes and worthy of partnering up with. I'm a decent looking man, but I'm short and that's a big no-no for women (as a general rule) so I'm lower down on the pecking order of finding a mate vs someone who looks just like me but is 6' tall. That's okay though. That's life. We don't all win the genetic lottery and to suggest we are all the same is denying basic evolutionary science. Beauty standards do exist for a reason.
I enjoy learning about beauty standards because it gives a look into what's going on in the region for example: a region may think fatter women are beautiful because of famine. You're just being an asshole with a weird profile picture.
I really like that experiment where they asked people all over the world to photoshop one girl -to conform her to their cultures most pervasive "beauty" standard. I wish they had multiple submissions from each country to present a more whole view... http://mymodernmet.com/photoshop-perceptions-of-perfection-across-borders/
Says the person without a real profile picture

tbh, beauty is health, and neither obesity, nor physical deformations are health paragons.

Lol 44+ downvotes and counting. Just wow. Moving on to the next article. This one is full of morons and suspect bullies in their own right.
