Many times animals are kept in zoos because they were too hurt or ill to survive in the wild.

Too msny places in USA & SAUDI are in private zoos etc. Only Registered, Documented Zoos, etc should have Tigers, Lions etc. And as Always if there's a problem it's the animals that are punished. Punish the damned Owners, not the Animals, most of which are Not usually kept in even decent places with Enrichment for them...

Pallas Cats are very rare in the wild and endangered. No one is keeping them in petting zoos or backyards. Very few zoos have them and the ones that do are studying and breeding in hopes of repopulation.

Also called the Steppe Cat, because that's where they live. Notice how the ears are canted to the sides of the head? The areas where they live are barren and rocky, so there's no vegetation for them to hide behind when they're hunting, and if the ears stuck up above the head, their prey would see them and scamper away.

Those things often are happening in synchrony. For instance, while the animal is bred for repopulation in captivity, legislation about land use, etc., can be changed to make their natural habitats more supportive again. After all, in the majority of cases, men have to undo what they did that made the animals endangered in the first place. (Introducing invasive species, turning too much forest land into farmland, etc.)

Many wild cats will breed with domesticated types and ruin the pure bloodlines.

With animals that tend to imprint on humans they usually avoid letting them interact with people (or even see them if possible) if there is a chance that they can be released in the future. The main reason your idea won't work (it's been tried for decades) is because of the general public acting brainless when they see an animal that they want a "selfie" with so they can get "likes" on Facebook. Google "Tourists kill endangered baby dolphin taking selfies" & "Woman who harassed Yellowstone Bison faces fines & jail". LOTS of links will pop-up to similar news stories. Or they're poached, often sold as pets or food. Google "Pet [any dangerous predator] escapes in Texas, City in lockdown". And we've all learned about the "meat markets" in China (& other countries all over the world). They are bred in captivity to protect the babies from predators & raise their numbers WHILE the improving of habitats is being worked out or at least until they're big enough to have a better chance.

It's not even close to the same. True conservative programs have the animals living in good conditions, close to their needs and original environment. Puppy mills have none of that and produce puppies to make as much of a profit as possible, and that's easiest reached with spending next-to-no money on the welfare of the dogs.

Do you mean that the dogs in puppy mills have that same "Help Me" face? (Bc beyond that, it's "apples & oranges".)
