Nikon’s New $596 Point & Shoot Camera’s Insane Zoom Can Show The Moon Moving

A video taken on Nikon’s Coolpix P900 that zooms-in to apparently capture the movement of the Moon has gone viral on YouTube. German nature-lover Lothar Lenz used the camera’s 83x optical zoom lens to capture the stunning sight. The P900 costs $600, and has the same field of view as a 2,000mm lens on a full-frame camera.
As others have accurately pointed out, what the camera actually captures is the Earth’s rotation. The Moon orbits the Earth in the prograde (same) direction, and completes one rotation in about 28 days—hence the sidereal lunar month. You can find more details on the camera here.

This camera can only see the moon but cannot go as far viewing saturn and jupiter ...

I believe it's a very good camera, however, as an astronomer I can tell you that the moon and earth move in a geosynchronous movement, that's why we can only see one half of the moon, and never the other half, which is the dark side, and it's not possible to see the moon's movement. I can see the confusion, since the camera is on Earth, and Earth moves which puts the moon out of frame.

The moon and earth are both moving. And both revolving. Each in different directions. That accounts for the speed in which the moon appears to move. But that's a rocking video.
it's actually not the moon moving, but the earth rotating around its axis. :)
Nice catch! I was thinking if both the Earth & the Moon was moving you'd be seeing movement, but not the Moon moving!
No, actually it is the moon moving around the Earth.
moon does move around the Earth too. but its movement takes a month! the daily movement and the movement you see in this video is due to the earth rotation. that's also why the sun moves around the earth! ;)

Fantastic for a camera of that price, my only complaint is the noise when using the zoom. This would spoil videos that you wish to capture using the zoom
Use an off-camera mike with a wind screen.

keeps your pants tight, its not complete analog zoomed. you can see it, when it zooms back, theres a jump from digital to analog zoom. never the less, impressive having the price in mind.
