Nikon Awards A Badly Photoshopped Photo, The Internet Responds
Mistakes happen even to the best of us – but when your name is Nikon and you have 10 million Facebook fans – you know you’re in trouble. It all started when Nikon announced that they had decided to give a prize to Chay Yu Wei for managing to “catch an airplane in mid-air.” The problem was that there was no plane in the original shot to begin with.
The photo was so badly edited that you could see it on any larger screen (well, at least we saw it). Not to mention that Nikon should have checked it with “curves” or “levels” in Photoshop. When it seemed that the things couldn’t get worse, someone posted the answer from the photographer himself. To a question “How long did you wait for that plane?” he replied: “Not too long! I was lucky! Thank you so much!”
The Internet didn’t take long to respond…

After a while Nikon responded and admitted their mistake

Update: we just received an explanation from Chay Yu Wei
Like one user commented, I was on a photo walk in Chinatown and I chanced upon that set of ladders. I snapped a picture of it, and subsequently felt that a plane at that spot would make for an interesting point of view. Hence, I inserted the plane with PicsArt and uploaded it to Instagram. That’s how I use Instagram, sometime it’s to showcase the work I’m proud of, sometimes just to have fun. This case, that small plane was just for fun and it was not meant to bluff anyone. I would have done it with photoshop if I really meant to lie about it, but no, it was a playful edit using the PicsArt app and uploaded to Instagram. When my friends commented with some questions, I also answered it jokingly, saying it’s the last flight of the day and saying it was my lucky day that I did not wait too long. At that time, of course everyone who read it took it as a joke, before this issue arrived and it is taken seriously.
However, I made a mistake by not keeping it to Instagram as a casual social media platform. I crossed the line by submitting the photo for a competition. I meant it as a joke and I’m really sorry to Nikon for disrespecting the competition. It is a mistake and I shouldn’t have done that. I also shouldn’t have jokingly answered Nikon that I caught the plane in mid-air and should have just clarified that the plane was edited in using PicsArt. This is my fault and I sincerely apologise to Nikon, to all Nikon Photographers, and to the photography community as general.
This has been a great lesson to me, and I hope I will be a wiser person to use this as encouragement to polish my photography skill. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I also appreciate all the supports from friends around me.”

Bwahaha, the resulting memes are pretty ingenious. Sad that people would "cheat" to win, but I'm not surprised. Where talent lacks...At least Nikon was made aware early enough.

The Nikon response is waaaaa to PR-ish! The language should have been much more user friendly and informal!
I could see the Photoshopped plane box without the changed picture.
The photographer shouldn't have said anything. It was a good photo and there is nothing wrong with Photoshop. People often confuse photography as just taking a picture. Sometimes the art comes I in post when developing the picture. If this was a documentary photo the shame on the photographer, but for fine art who cares.
This is pathetic. Do these people have nothing better to do with their lives than try to put someone down? So what if he cheated? At least he is doing something he loves to do with his life. I have seen these kind of people on the news. I'm guessing we have half a dozen unemployed 30 year old men who live in their parents basement to thank for this c**p. No one that is happy and who has found self happiness needs to resort to this kind of c**p. These people are all probably depressed people that get a kick our of trying to steal someone's thunder. How do you think it was discovered to begin with? Some 30 year old guy who had spent the whole all alone and who's self esteem was lower than fossils that have spent the last 60 million years buried sees someone's photos who won an award from Nikon and they are instantly jealous and want to make it about themselves. Pathetic.
This is pathetic. Instead of trying to put someone down, do something useful with your life. The people behind these are probably 30 year old men that sit in their parents basement glued to video games the whole day. They are just jealous of someone else's accomplishments this garbage screams "inadequacy."
Nowhere in his "explanation" does he say he's returning his "prize"; whatever that was. Just expect people to dishonest about everything in a culture where cheating is the norm. He's not even embarrassed about it.

So a guy, saves the picture, draws a rectangle around the plane and adds some gray balance then BOOM!!!! the photo is fake and all the little frustrated kids with cameras tag along for the "it's fake" party. Jesus the frustration in some a******s.

You can see it is photo-shopped in the original pic, it's faint but you can see the white box, also if you tilt your laptop/screen backwards its more obvious.
I just LOVED the Van Damme split take-off. And I couldn't agree more with the observation someone here made about Nikon's ridiculously corporate double-speak response to all this, so full of corporate-carefulness jargon. That in itself is funny.
