Meet The Closest Living Relative To The Extinct Dodo Bird With Incredibly Colorful Iridescent Feathers
Ever heard of the Nicobar pigeon? It’s the closest living relative to the extinct flightless Dodo bird, and the colorful bird is absolutely stunning.
Even though they’re relatives to this legendary extinct animal, The Nicobar pigeon looks nothing like the Dodo. One of their differences is Nicobar’s luminous colors. It has reddish legs, a white tail, and is covered in blue, copper, and green feathers. The reason for the beautiful birds’ colorful characteristics is their location – coastal regions from the Nicobar Islands and small islands, where there aren’t many natural predators that these rare birds would need to conceal themselves from. According to the IUCN, the Nicobar pigeon is considered “near threatened”.

Share on FacebookThis bird is beautiful beyond words. Could you imagine seeing this bird sitting on a statue in the park?? I'd probably start going to parks more often!
I thought, I saw this bird in person. I was right! My photography and PS skills is not too impressive. But here you go :D http://mewlinggracefully.tumblr.com/post/148366118652
Absolutely breath taking...we are so fortunate to have photographers to capture these images and share them.
Beautiful photos! If you like birds, I just joined a FB group called Birds Around the World where you can share your own bird photos: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1070134243019367/permalink/1252703191429137/?comment_id=1252877131411743¬if_t=group_comment_reply¬if_id=1472600237427555
This bird is so beautiful, I want to design a costume after it. (That is a huge compliment from me)
Its a pretty bird but I cant help but think of it as a pigeon in fancy dress. :)
I care not much for pigeons, though hubby keeps a few for showing, but these I'd love. Wow if somehow, a breeding programme could get established, I'd put my name forward. Such beautiful birds! I believe there's a type of pheasant (Himalayan) that is blessed with colours very akin to the colours of this pigeon. Poor hubby doesn't know what he has unleashed 😈 Wonderful photography!
Only with evolution can a fat pigeon with a d**k on its nose turn into a beautiful multicolored bird God who woke up like this
