Many people agree that it’s an awful feeling to meet a celebrity you look up to and realize they are a horrible person. We’ve all read about or even met the meanest celebrities in real life who are rude to everyone and full of themselves despite trying to look nice in the media.

Rephrasing Charles Bukowski’s words, though some celebrities might seem like the worst people on earth, we should feel sorry for them, as the stars might not even know who they are anymore after their many roles on screen. It might be true, but it’s not a valid reason to act out.

Fortunately, lots of people had the opportunity to meet some of the nicest celebrities in real life. These encounters prove that a lot of famous people are really nice and treat those around them with respect. People appreciate meeting celebrities who are nice in real life and are eager to share stories of these encounters. It is truly refreshing to find out that so many famous people deserve the title of the nicest celebrities, especially after all the sad stories we hear online.

Scroll below to read a list of stories compiled by Bored Panda about actors, singers, and other famous people who are the nicest celebrities and just as real as we are. Check the stories about Jim Carrey refilling someone’s gas tank, Bryan Cranston reenacting his Heisenberg role for a devoted fan, and the many instances Bill Murray was, well, Bill Murray. "I was jogging at the San Francisco Marina back in 1988 I think it was and I saw Robin Williams sitting in the side of his van just chillin'. I said, "How you doin' Mr. Williams?" He said, "I'm doing great, you running from the cops?" I laughed and stopped to chat with him for about 5 minutes. He was absolutely delightful. Such a fond memory. I wept when I heard he died."

Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks in movie Forrest Gump

Tom Hanks at Best Buy. He was in line in front of me with a cart full, all by himself. I was only buying a bottle of water because they didn’t have what I was looking for. I just blurted out” Forest Gump is my favorite movie” like a creep, and he turned around, and said “that was my favorite movie to make! I’m glad you love it.” He then chatted with me while about movies as we stood in line. When it was his turn to check out while they were ringing up his stuff he said “oh let me get that water for you” and paid for my water. He kept talking to me and then we walked out and he said “nice talking to you! You’re a very nice young lady and always remember... life is like a box of chocolates.. you never know what your gonna get” in his Forest Gump voice. IT WAS THE BEST THING EVER.

"My sister was waiting tables in NYC, and ended up serving Patrick Stewart. She didn't want to bother him, so she just did her job, but at the end of the night she told him how much she had enjoyed seeing him in a production of Hamlet that year (2008), and that she hoped he was planning to do more theater in the US.

My sister was prepared to leave it at that, but apparently, he was so thrilled at someone who wanted to talk about his theater work (as opposed to Star Trek), that he ended up talking to my sister for a while about his experiences on stage. Just a really nice guy who loves acting."

What to Do When Meeting Celebrities

Kindness and politeness go both ways. While being tired of constant attention and lack of privacy don’t justify rude behavior, we should never forget that celebrities are also humans and treat them accordingly. If you’re itching to come up and strike up a conversation or just ask for a picture, make sure the situation calls for it. Don’t be pushy or rude because even the nicest celebrities may snap when encountering inappropriate behavior.

"When I was younger, my grandmother and I ran into Robin Williams eating alone in a Whole Foods. We approached him and introduced ourselves and he immediately cleared a space for us to sit and chat with him. I was pretty young at the time, so he spent most of the time trying to make me laugh by doing voices. I may have been too young to truly appreciate it at the time, but looking back I can easily say it's one of the greatest moments of my life and Robin has always had a special spot in my heart because of it."

Another story about him- one day while driving home my mom stopped to help an old man who had fallen out of his wheelchair at the end of his driveway. She's tiny and was struggling. Steve pulls up, hops out of his truck, helps her, they high-five, and he gets back in his truck and leaves.

I like to think Steve Zahn is just cruising around all day looking for people to help."

"I went to a signing by Tim Burton. The line for him was out the building and around the corner. Everyone was being told that Tim wasn't going to be able to see everyone. I was lucky, I was near the front. We were also told that we could only get an autograph and picture then had to move on.

Tim was amazingly nice, and constantly had to be reminded not to shake people's hands and talk with them because he had limited time. He also ended up being late for a private showing of one of his movies (I can't remember which one). He was late because he made sure he saw every single person in line.

He was just overall a kind and humble man and very sweet. He even looked over my aspiring animator friend's portfolio and gave her his email, asking her to send him her progress as she improved. A truly great guy."

Adam stopped by our table and said congrats to the groom-to-be and asked some genuine questions about where we were all from and what we do. He then took a few moments to tell us that he had seen us earlier having fun and laughing together and about how important that is in life, being with friends and laughing and enjoying our time together. Robin Williams was suffering from a brain illness akin to Alzheimer's, but with even more symptoms such as actual hallucinations, and more. He was devastated at losing his abilities, not just depression from nowhere. He had a good reason for being emotionally flayed. The idea that comedians are often depressed is not without substance but no reason to think that Sandler was having an episode during this encounter. He just thought it was nice seeing people having a good time.

To me this story is a part of the great mystery of depression. Depression is said to be the contradiction between the life you actually live and the life that could actually make you happy. Perhaps connecting to a random stranger for 45 minutes was one of his good moments, a situation where he didn't have to play a role? A situation where he actually felt a connection to another person? I sure hope it was, and just like with other people with depression, I somehow wish I could have helped him. Heart breaking stuff.

"Vanilla Ice. He was doing one of those '90s Nostalgia' college campus tours in the UK back in 2005/6 and being a genuine fan of his, I went along to the show in Glasgow. The show itself was great, he played a lot of his harder and heavier material that I'm a fan of but 99% of the crowd just wanted to hear Ice Ice Baby. When he eventually played it at the end, it was the updated, modernised version of it...the crowd didn't seem that taken by it.

After the show he was signing stuff. Mostly just flyers or people's bodies etc. I gave him my copy of his Hard To Swallow CD which caused him to double take. I told him I'm a big fan of his rap-metal material and he reacted with genuine happiness. He told the bouncer to let me and my girlfriend into his VIP spot and told us we could drink what we wanted while he finished signing stuff.

He joined us some time later and I spent the night partying away with him and hearing lots of stories, some funny, some pretty messed up about the record industry. Then we went to a nearby Casino where he proceeded to happily drop hundreds onto the roulette table.

An experience I'll never forget, he was very humble and we genuinely enjoyed each other's company. The guy knows the world views him as a parody, and he made peace with it. He released the rap-metal albums knowing they weren't going to go far, but done it for himself and regrets nothing."

David Bowie

David Bowie wearing yellow sweater

"Warning: David Bowie Story.

Years ago I was working backstage at a theatre in NYC. We were hosting a ballet company that was doing their annual holiday time money grab. This particular year it was a production of the Nutcracker aimed at children. Word travelled quickly that David Bowie was in the audience with his wife and kids. The organizer of the ballet passed them a message through the ushers that asked them to stay after to meet the dancers and take pictures.

When the time came to collect David Bowie from the audience and usher him backstage, I was somehow nominated and as a huge Bowie fan, I was star-struck and panicked. I quickly devised a plan wherein I would greet Freaking David Freaking Bowie and walk him quickly to the backstage entrance, say "right through here, sir", and duck into a nearby restroom. Getting to the stage from that particular door was a bit of a labyrinth (ha) but the thought of trying to keep it together while walking them the all the way to the stage was just too much.

All goes according to plan until I go to enter the restroom. David Bowie pivots and says "Oh, is that the restroom?" Whatever happened next was a total blur, but the next thing I know I am alone in a small restroom (two urinals and a stall) with David Bowie. Me and Bowie. Pissing in tandem.

You know how sometimes your brain throws out the most bizarre thoughts in the the most awkward situations in order to make you laugh? All I could think of was "I wonder if he's spinning his testicles like those metal balls in Labyrinth..."

I remained frozen, eyes forward, unflinching, dick in hand as David Bowie flushed, washed his hands and exited. That was my uncomfortable brush with greatness. RIP, Bowie. We love you."

Junior Seau

'Junior Seau. From an earlier post: I volunteered to help with his foundation's event where the recognize a local sports hero. That year it was Jimmie Johnson. They auctioned off goods to raise money for the charity with Junior as the auctioneer. ... At the end, us lowly volunteers were in the kitchen, getting a sandwich meal they had packed for us after cleaning, and in walked Junior with a double armful of live orchids. They had been the centerpieces on the tables at the auction. I thought everyone had left but us. He goes to every lady in the room and gives her one and thanks her for volunteering. He shakes all the guys hands and smiles and talks for second, calling everyone "Buddy". I was actually the last guy he stopped at, being the closest to the door, and he shook my hand and thanked me. If you never met him, he was a stunningly immense human being, like a mountain of muscle. He saw my wedding ring and gave me the last orchid and said: "This is for your wife. Tell her it's from Junior Seau and that her husband did a good thing today. She probably wonders what your doing out this late. Thanks, Buddy."'

"Jay Leno. And please, hear me out.

When I was 17 (this was in 2010), I got to go backstage at the Tonight Show because I was a huge fan of the show. After the show, he came into the green room and talked to me and my family for a solid ten minutes.

After we had left the studio, we saw him in his car leaving the studio and signing autographs for fans.

The real kicker: the next year, I graduated high school. Out of nowhere, the dude sent me a fucking letter congratulating me on that.

He couldn't have been nicer to me."

Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin wearing suit and smiling

"Alec Baldwin attempted to rescue me and my friends about 15 years ago.

I grew up near Wilmington, NC, and my friends and I were out fishing in a small boat. Our lines get tangled up in the motor, we can't steer the boat, and it ends up washed up on the beach on an island. Waves are constantly crashing over it, filling it with water way faster than we can bail. We send one friend to the intracoastal waterway side of the island to get help. He comes back with some random guy, and Alec Baldwin.

Alec stayed there and helped us for a good 15 minutes, when he easily could have just left these 4 dumb kids who weren't in any real danger. Super nice guy. Eventually even with their help we couldn't free the boat, so they took my friend onto their boat (with Kim Basinger and her friend) to their house, where my friend called for help. Eventually some Coast Guard guys came with a bilge pump to free us. Thanks Alec!"

I see that he seems to get a lot of flack on the internet from people, but I worked with the guy on a project for at least a month or so (spending hours on end in the same room) and he is actually a really nice person. He looks out for his friends, his employees, works late if it is needed/helpful, and is quite supportive of people around him who are new/trying to grow in their field. He gives words of encouragement for growth, but is honest where improvement is needed.

On top of that he is consistently in practice of the ol' cordial 'just-passing-by' greeting. You know - when you are passing someone else in a hall or on a sidewalk (acquainted or not) and they smile and say "Good Morning!" or even just a smirk and a "Hi"? Not enough people do this anymore. That alone gives someone major points in my book!"

When I went through cancer and felt like the last person on earth with everything avoiding looking at me when I was sick from chemo I began to make myself make eye contact with people. Not to force them, but to force myself to be out in the world, regardless of how I looked (bald) and how I felt. It's nice to speak to strangers, if only to say hello and/or smile, and it makes me feel better about myself while it's obvious others appreciate it too. I still do it now and glad it's my habit, because as you say there are not enough of us!

Not my story, but, in about 1998, my father used a urinal directly next to Kiefer Sutherland at the Orpheum Theatre; Phantom of the Opera, if I remember correctly. Mr. Sutherland senses someone watching him and says, "Not a good time." My father replies, "I wasn't gonna ask for an autograph. I just want to tell my wife I saw Kiefer Sutherland's d**k." My sister worked at a Wendy's in a town that neighbored Seattle. She was working the counter late when 5 guys came in and ordered food. While she was taking their order, she noticed that her co-worker was in the corner freaking out. She turned around and said "What?!?" Her co-worker said "That's Queensryche. My sister said "Nah..can't be..why would they come in here." her co-worker rushed out to her car and got the tape (yes this was the 80's) and showed my sister the bands picture on the cover. Sure enough it was them. Her co-worker went out in the dining area where they were sitting and pretended to clean until she got close enough to their table to ask them for an autograph...made her co-workers day. My sister started listening to their music after that. Empire..good album.

You could tell he was exhausted after, as it was pretty late. Sure enough, hundreds of people lined up to get their books signed, and an attendant was there to grab your phone and take your picture with him. He was such a good sport and made small talk with nearly every person.

I had bought pre-signed books before the show because I didn't know he'd be doing this after, and he offered to personalize them for me anyway. I recommend watching his spoken word special on Netflix if you haven't seen it already. He's an amazing man."

While there, Gabriel Iglesias and his family asked if they could exit through there because they were nearly robbed on their way in. The lady that was in charge asked who he was and he said he's a comedian, to which she (in my opinion kinda rudely) replied "i don't know who you are." I let her know that I recognised him and she told me I could escort his group out of the arena. As we're walking out I let him know that I'm a fan and how exciting it is to meet him, he shook my hand and let me take a picture with him. Once they were out of the arena and about to get in their taxi he asked if there was anything he could do for me. I asked if he would be willing to part ways with the ringside chair that was exclusive for the event and without a moment of hesitation he handed it to me and thanked me for escorting him and his family out and to their taxi. My one regret is that i didn't get him to sign it, but I can say that I got a Wrestlemania chair from Fluffy and that makes me happy."

I wasn't really paying attention and somehow blended in with people while I was on my phone and ended up in the lunch area for them since it was a building I usually cut through. How no one stopped me before I ended up there was beyond me, but I saw this food there and being the poor college kid I was, decided I'd try to sneak some food from whatever this event was. (Usually events going on in that area don't care if you take food since they are trying to attract people.) so I'm walking out past the tables and it was like bam.

Clooney there at the table casually chatting and I'm like "holy shit, George clooney!"

And he was like "holy shit, that's me!" shook my hand. Chatted for a bit, then he waves over security to escort me out lol. Made sure they just escorted me out , Totally classy the whole time. Did he kneel down to you, or did you have to use a step ladder?

They were just sitting at a table at the back of the room and no one bothered them . I spoke to Harry and asked him a photo as they were about to leave and he said yes , he introducted himself to my mom and he was just very very nice and humble!"

20+ People That Were Surprised At How Nice These Celebrities Were In Real Life

"Joe Biden came to speak at my school and then stayed to shake everyone's hand and talk to them. Guy was literally awesome. He is exactly what you would expect.

After taking a picture with him I saw my friend in line and waited with her so we could go to the dining hall afterwards. We get up and Joe asks me if I saw him before? I said yeah I was just waiting for my friend.

He looked at her and said "I don't blame you if I was her friend I would be waiting for her too." and proceeds to tell my friend how she should let me take her out on a date. It was hilarious and an awesome experience"

So? Did the date happen, or did you have to disappoint the former Veep?

Alcohol is like fertilizer, in the music industry; when used correctly it can be beneficial, use too much and your project gets covered in s**t. Drunken idiocy and irresponsibility was the end of Kings of Leon; (the original line-up, at least.) In '05 two of the members were not even legal to drink, in the U.S.

"Taylor Swift! I wasn't even a fan until I met her. I went to a concert with my friend, who is a superfan, and we got picked for the T-Party, which is like a backstage party after the show. She came around to everyone there and spent a few minutes talking with each person. You can tell she genuinely cares about her fans."

Two friends of mine were picked by Taylor's mom to meet her after a show. They had dressed up in some Taylor theme for the concert. She took pictures with them and was very nice. She does that after every show.

She took pictures with everyone and autographs, even though her knees were bad that day. Apperently she also gave the person in charge of the event her complimentary bottle of wine that the hotel gave her."

"Jimmy Fallon. Sat next to him and his brother randomly at a baseball game and they were some of the coolest and genuine guys I've ever met. We just talked about baseball and they were asking us about rules they didn't know. And every time a fan would come down to get a picture, he was more than happy to. He was honestly like he is on his show, but slightly more toned down and chill"

"I was bouncing at a crappy bar in boston around the corner from a venue with a beach boys concert. After the concert, lots of fans come in, i am not really paying attention and one of them has no ID. I tell him he can't come in, not looking at the the shorter guy he is with who says "he is with me, I got my ID" and gives me his California license. It says John Stamos. I look up and sure enough it's John muthafucking Stamos with a little smirk, short unshaven still really good looking with a hat on. I let them in and they drink at the back of the bar totally incognito. On the way out he thanks me for letting his friend in. I find out later he was playing with the beach boys and the guy with no ID was in the band. He was a nice, unassuming guy which makes me hate him even more for baggin Rebecca Romjain. Damn you Stamos!"

"DMX. He giggled at me being all excited to meet him. He jokingly held one of my knees because it was shaking.

Then he gave me a hug. His hands were so big that his pinky could reach my elbow but his thumb was just under my shoulder. He wasn't very tall, so it was kinda crazy how big his hands were.

He was so nice."

"My husband met Sylvester Stallone while they were shooting one of the Rocky movies. He lived in Philly close to where the movie was shot. He said he was super nice, let him and a few friends walk around the set. He also met Mark Wahlberg when they were making Shooter. Also filled very close to where he lived. (You can actually see his house in one shot when Mark is running down a street in the movie.) My husband said he drove up and down the streets in the neighborhood waving and talking to everyone."

Reese Witherspoon was really cool.

I once lived in Woodstock, CT. I ran into her at this small diner next to where they hold the fair every year. She was struggling to put up the door on a trailer she was towing. Asked if she needed help, helped her out, and then left.

Two hours later, I realized who she was.

The next day he came into our restaurant and we named a burger after him. It was a good day.

Really nice guy."

His book with no pictures is one of the best works for children in the last 20 years. It's the sort of thing my mom might have written, and my sister and I would have killed your ears with our laughing.

'I met Katherine Heigl in the airport in SLC, Utah. I was traveling for work, and the rest of the dudes I was with were arguing about whether it was really her.

So I walked up and asked her.

Up close you could definitely tell it was her. She's just as gorgeous in real life. She was nice and friendly, not bitchy or dismissive like people usually end up saying about meeting famous people.

Me: "Excuse me, I'm really sorry to bother you, but I have a quick question."

Her: "Yes?"

Me: "Are you who we all think you are?"

Her: "Who do you think I am?"

Me: "Katherine Heigl."

Her: "Yes I am."

Me: "Awesome, sorry to bother you, have a nice flight."

That was it. I left her alone after. I figure most people probably have bad experiences with celebrities because they do the whole "OMG I'M YOUR BIGGEST FAN SIGN MY EVERYTHING!!"'

"Through a strange series of events, my dad became friends with Mike Tyson for a few months. This was fairly recent.

He came to our house a few times and we got to go to his house once. I would describe him as humble, funny, and genuinely nice. He never wanted to talk about his own boxing career.

One time he just popped in because he was nearby and didn't want to sit in traffic. Another time my dad asked if he would circle around and wave to our neighbor across the street who was outside. Instead he walked over and talked to the guy for a couple minutes.

He seems to have either been really busy lately or just moved on because he doesn't call or come over anymore."

I think it quite remarkable how one can almost tell if a celebrity is truly nice just by watching them doing their job, their facial expressions and charisma. It shines through and I am not at all surprised to have seen these names on the list. Especially the wonderful Robin Williams - who would not do a film unless the filming company would hire homeless people as staff. God bless ole boy!
