Oh, the sweetness of sheer unapologetic laziness… Is it just a lack of willpower? Maybe it’s a state of mind, a hedonism-inspired lifestyle, a rebellion of modern kind. All jokes aside, calling someone “lazy” is somewhat an insult, especially in societies where hard work and productivity are valued highly (we’re looking at you, America!).

Having said that, a 2019 Pew survey found that a majority of Americans think people are lazier now than they used to be. But we can all discuss what being dubbed lazy actually means.

For some it's a lack of physical activity, for others it may be lack of will to do even the most routine and boring tasks. And while it’s totally normal to have a brief episode of idleness, if it lasts too long, you’re suddenly playing dangerous games.

So today, we’re diving deep into real-life examples of people succumbing to their laziness, by choice or accident. The result is an uncanny collection of pics that may make you laugh, infuriate you or give you a moment to reflect on your own lazy side.

Super frustrating to see this. My dad is a paraplegic due to a car accident. We both nearly died, no exaggeration. This type of c**p happens all the time. I’ve seen two healthy 19 yr old dudes park in a handicap parking space at the bank. Most folks excuses are, “oh I’ll only be one second”. NO ONE is ever just one second. The laziness & sense of entitlement is brewing rampant across the globe. This is not something unique to one race or moral beliefs. It’s a complete lack of common courtesy.

Laziness can lash out at us at every corner, especially at times when we need to be at our most productive. Think of work deadlines, important meetings and calls, bills to be paid and things to be done. Sometimes it’s little things that we can’t force our bodies to push through– from household chores to dragging ourselves to the gym.

And while we all have brief moments of idleness (which may feel pretty indulgent!), at some point it becomes a genuine problem. So to find out more about what’s actually happening in our minds when we’re lazy, how to cope with it we reached out to two experts: Christine Mitterbauer, a licensed and ICF-approved career, and life coach and serial entrepreneur, as well as Dr. Audrey Tang, a chartered psychologist, media spokesperson and author of multiple books, including "Be A Great Manager Now", "The Leader's Guide to Mindfulness."

Dr. Tang argues that laziness becomes a problem when you are either no longer contributing fairly to what you are receiving and requiring others to take the strain (with little thought to their wellbeing and efforts), or it is standing in the way of your own achievement of personal goals and desires.“In the latter case (and sometimes in the former) - this can speak to a lack of motivation, and, sometimes, the lack of desire to do anything can be a symptom of depression. In which case it can be helpful to ask yourself why this is happening,” she explained.

I made a profile just to post on this. I'll probably get downvoted, but anyone who believes this is laziness needs to try taking public trasportation on a regular basis. I live in a megacity with subways, and some of them are built DEEP to be under the city's infrastructure. If you belive that one set of stairs is going to get you to the exit, for some cities, that is absolutely not the case. It could be three, four, five sets of stairs to get to the exit. And it's not like most peoples' houses are so close to the metro that it's an easy walk once you get out. Once you get out, then you need to walk home, and my city has hills. I would much rather save my energy by taking the escalator when I need to walk another 15-20 minutes to get home. Just like I don't judge people to take elevators when there are stairs, I also think it's very unfair to consider these people lazy. Some of these people walk miles/kms every single day to get to and from their place of work. Have some compassion.

Not being able to go up stairs isn't always a laziness issue. Some people just really can't go up a long set of stairs. But also, who cares? Choosing to take and elevator or escalator isn't necessarily a laziness thing. It's more convenient and a lot of those people look like they're maybe carrying bags or maybe it's hot. Or maybe they're going to be walking all day so they're conserving energy. Choosing a technology to avoid over-exerting yourself isn't lazy.

This isn't lazy, it's "tired". I've done this in airports. Walked across "miles" of airport corridors with my suitcase, feet hurt, didn't feel like hoofing up stairs. And in spite of how it looks, waiting for the escalator crowd typically only added a minute or two compared to taking the stairs.

This feels way more like "let's judge people" than a picture of laziness. They're just politely queueing for an escalator. They could be disabled or exhausted or just not in a hurry - I don't know and I'm not gonna decide for them that they don't belong there. They aren't doing anything wrong.

Some subways are 4 or 5 stories deep underground so you would have to climb the same amount of stairs. Seniors, pregnant women, children, or anyone will have lots of trouble climbing them. Also, don't forget about the "keep to the left/right" rule to allow those who want to climb the escalator. Hence this jam at the escalator entry.

I will definitely wait for an escalator if the alternative is climbing a hundred stairs. (100 stairs is five stories).

How is this embarrassing? I see this every morning when I go to work. Some people just prefer to take the escalator - live and let live. And as long as no one's pushing and shoving to get on it, no problem. The only thing that seems off - though it's hard to judge since this isn't a moving picture - is that the people on the left of the escalator seem to be standing still. Where I live, you stand still on the right side and walk on the left. But this could just be a case of different customs, so....

Oh, that's nothing. Wait till you go thorugh three major world airports in one day *and none even have an escalator* anywhere you need to go. No joke, did 10K walking just in airports that day, unless Hubby's fitbit thing lied. In whcih case, probably 8km.

While I fully agree this could take an award for laziness, lemme tell you about the lines at some subway exits. They’re so long they stretch to the top of the steps and escalators. There are 4 functioning entrances and 2 exits on the one I used to used to use. You scanned your card entering and exiting to deduct value of trip. Every evening the line stretched down the escalator and moved at slightly faster than its speed. If you walked up the steps you’d have to awkwardly ask someone to let you cut in line. It’s hell for impatient people who like to bolt up the steps.

Escalators are for disabled people, old people, people with babies or little children. Other than that use your dam legs and walk up the stairs. I am disabled and I wish my legs worked so I can walk, run and play with my children. But you're going up the escalator because you're lazy.

So here are some important questions to ask yourself, according to Dr. Tang: “Think of a goal, have you got it?” and next, “Think of all the things you need to do to achieve it.”

“Small manageable chunks, with focus – you should be achieving that in no time – go you!”

“Seems straightforward, doesn’t it?” Dr. Tang asks. “And this is a goal you’ve had for some time, plus those steps are probably quite easy…”

Dr. Tang invites us to think about everything we did yesterday–”how many of those things contributed TO your goal or simply distracted you from it (Netflix binges, scrolling mindlessly through social media, any psychodramas you got caught up in)?”

According to Dr. Tang, our brains are amazing since they are capable of so much. “And yet we often apply their energy and drive ineffectively due to habit, laziness, or simply because we don’t know any other way.”

It’s important to realize that it is not the big choices that we make that shape our lives the most – “whether to buy that house, whether to take that job, whether to get into a relationship with that person… because they are clearly defined and they have an exit strategy,” she said and added that “it is the little choices you make every day that really make up who you are.”

According to the award-winning book author and spokesperson, “if we can focus on making as many little healthy choices as possible, we’ll be living the life we want, rather than seeking motivation to move towards it.”
