New PlayStation 5 Demo Blurs The Line Between CGI And Reality
All technology is advancing and gaming technology is no exception to that. While the majority of the human race is trapped home, many turn to games out of boredom or as a coping mechanism. Just at the perfect time, Unreal Engine released a demo video showcasing the next generation graphics and we must say that it’s absolutely stunning!
As of May 14, 2020, the video has 5,868,762 views and is trending on YouTube at number 24. Definitely piqued people’s interest.
Brian Karis, the technical director of graphics, and Jerome Platteaux, the art director of special projects, guide the viewer through 9-minute video, explaining the details of the video as well as technology used to create such a breathtaking experience.
The recently released demo shows stunning details that seem life-like
“A few years ago, we got together as a team and brainstormed where we thought we could push forward the state of the art and real-time graphics,” Brian explained at the start of the video. The team wanted to make advancements in two directions, one of which was dynamic global illumination. To make the virtual world less static they created a system called Lumen.
The other aspect the team wanted to address was truly virtualized geometry. “The artists wouldn’t have to be concerned over poly counts, draw calls, or memory. We could directly use film quality assets and bring them straight into the engine.
And that’s a big deal for artists,” they elaborated in the video. For that purpose, they created a system called Nanite.
The demo shows the level of graphics that will be available for PlayStation 5, a home video game console that’s scheduled for late 2020.
You can watch the demo in all its glory (and full screen!) in the video below!

Share on FacebookThis what game trailers look like now on some high end titled games. The difference is this is actual gameplay. We are finally here! Blurs reality and CGI line. The textures and scenery are flawless but the lady looks a little off. Close enough though
This is a scripted tech demo, not an actual video game, so it's not "actual gameplay". Unless this is actually a game that is released on the console, take these "gameplay videos" with a grain of salt.

Games won’t look like this for a long time. That said, games do look amazing sometimes, and I love open world games specifically because of the immersive experience (but couldn’t give two shits about current, expensive and insufficient VR tech).
Remember that though this is shown on a PS5, it is just an Unreal Engine Demo. Lots of people are assuming that this amount of detail can only be handled on that console, which is false. Series X and PC can run said demo as well, Sony just struck a deal with Epic to showcase it on their console first.
Yeah, wait till actual gameplay. Can't imagine it won't eat frame rate
Yup. Tech demos are just that. Tech demos. It's kind of hilarious how people are calling this "gameplay" when it's not even an actual game.

Exactly. People are spreading misinformation saying that this means we'll see all games on PS5 looking like this. It's incredibly false to assume. Tech demos are like the concept cars of the tech world. They show what "can" be done, not what is actually possible in practice. In this case, don't expect games to look this good until proven otherwise.

Load More Replies...Great demo. I hope that Epic don't ruin their reputation with the toxic fanbase of Fortnite
I feel that these kinds of graphics would be very heavy on any kind of console with out current technology. So... this may be exaggerated a bit. That being said, I don't mind animated and colorful looking graphics. A game doesn't need to look this sharp to be good. I wish they'd make fun games again. There are a few out there, but not a lot
We can safely says that this quality of graphics will not be seen anywhere in PS5 games apart from the demo. Such were the cases of all previous generations and their tech demos.
The character brushing dust off her clothes after climbing is a nice detail.
Well this is Epics UE5 and they know how to utilize it. Also a lot of companies do not use Unreal Engine but their own normally and more of the smaller their party studios and what not use or would use this engine Also this wouldn't come to a game till 2021 or 2022 for a good bit that's not a epic game
Why not both? I love both nature and technology. I don't like bugs, though. Both in nature and technology. ♡
