Man Moving Into A New House Finds A Dog Left Behind In The Basement, And The Dog’s Reaction Says It All

Did ever get that nagging feeling, when leaving your old house behind, that you might have forgotten something? This heartbreaking story happened in St. Louis, when the new owners moved in and discovered somebody had left behind a beautiful dog, chained up and left to die.

“I just bought a house and there is a pit bull chained up in the basement,” the new owner told staff at Stray Rescue of St. Louis. “I’m not sure how long it’s been down there.”

With time of the essence, volunteers rushed to the scene to rescue the poor abandoned pup, who could not be happier to see them. “When we opened the door to the basement and shined our flashlight down, we saw a wagging tail,” Natalie Thomson, the group’s communications director, told The Dodo. “She was nearly choking herself as she was so excited to see us. When we freed her, she couldn’t stop jumping up and down and giving hugs.”

So who are these heartless people, who chose to leave a life behind, all alone and unable to fight for its survival? Turns out a squatter had been occupying the property, and had left behind a load of garbage and other stuff, as well as the dog. Nobody knows who the squatter was, or why they chose to leave behind such a precious pup. Clearly though, she wouldn’t have survived much longer without being found as there was no food or water bowl for her.

Her exuberant personality and the sheer joy she showed at being rescued earned her the name ‘Jumping Bean.’ For a dog that has gone through the traumatic experience of being abandoned and left to die, Jumping Bean has a remarkable spirit. “Her personality is completely adorable,” Thomson said. “She loves everyone she meets and craves attention. She makes sure she is not ignored! She’s an energetic and very affectionate pup! She is so happy all the time.”

I think she wasn't there for a long time (don't get me wrong, even for 5 minutes - IT'S TOO LONG!). What I meant, maybe that squatter left her there on purpose - maybe he knew that someone will find her in no time, because he couldn't take care of her anymore. Damn, maybe even he was watching how was she discovered. I think that because she doesn't look skinny at all. Maybe I have too much hope for humans, I don't know.

Absolutely appalling that someone would do that to another living creature. I am disgusted and heartbroken for that sweet dog! A similar story happened to my mother many years ago. Her next door neighbors moved and left their kitten in the apartment block hall with a piece of bread for company. They just moved away and abandoned the tiny animal (she was just a kitten)! Of course my mom took her in and now she's a happy elderly cat.

The dog looks to be in great condition, she's affectionate which suggests she has been loved or at least cared for a great deal. I'm thinking the person who left her behind couldn't care for her anymore and left her there knowing the new people would arrive soon anyway.

You're right - animals are not ornaments. But, maybe this squatter found this pup - she looks to be in decent condition - and knew they couldn't take care of her. And knew the owner would be around soon. NOT condoning what was done, but at least they didn't "set her free" to an unknown fate. We'll never really know. I will never understand how can be some people so cruel and unresponsible. One might think that once you get a pet, you get close to them and see a friend in it, an unique individual you come to love. I wonder how they treat other people and their close ones then, if they can do this to a helpless pet. ....Also, how hard it is to give to adoption.... ffs.....

Aww, what a sweetie! And, she is so lucky! A women who lived near me...(two properties over but on a different road. I could see her driveway and backyard)...moved but left her Lab and a cat in separate crates in the cellar. They were found months later by the man who bought the home. OMG, was he ever a basket case! Me, too as I would see the dog playing outside from my kitchen window and the cat would be sunning itself on the back deck. The man called AC and when he arrived, so did two officers. It seemed they were in the house like forever. I couldn't see the front part of the house but I was told both crates were handled as it if contained nitro and the men were visibly upset, too. This happened four or five years ago but the memories are so vivid! I never heard the dog bark. No one did. I don't know if the despicable woman was ever charged with animal neglect/abuse,/withholding substance....I wish I did as it would would help me, at least my emotional side could have relief!

There needs to be an awakening with sever penalties for people who do c**p like this. The abuse today towards animals is astronomical by people who wouldn't think twice about directing their insanity towards people. Maybe the homeless person who left this adorable girl was hoping she would get found and adopted. Needless to say the homeless person who found refuge in the house most likely needs a place to live. What the hell is going on with the mentality in the world. Our government spends trillions on war, to satisfy the greed of Corporate America and doesn't give a c**p about people and animals in need.

I have a love-hate relationship with these stories... because I LOVE to see how happy an abandoned, lonely, and sometimes even sick and almost dead animal gets a lovely home and becomes a happy beautiful creature. And also makes me happy and I love to see how kind loving people help them. But I HATE to discover how some people can be! how cruel! How can they just abandon an animal in cruel circumstances knowing it's gonna die?! Don't they have a heart??

I think that many hopeless people steal family pets to get more sympathy from by-passers. Then when done with the dog, they just abandon it. The family grieves and no one does anything. I think people should have to be able to prove where the dog came from. Not necessarily take it away because they might have found it abandoned, but if we worked hard to find missing dogs, we might find many of them with people who claim to be homeless and broke. I know that is untrue in many cases as well.

That story is so heartwrenching. I'm so glad for the happy ending, but I can just imagine the slow painful death she was heading for if no one had checked the basement. In our area a man moved out of an apartment and left a German Shepherd. Maybe he assumed someone would find and take him in, or maybe he didn't care, but the dog died after drinking all the water in the toilet. He'd been there for a long time. His anxiety and his everlasting hope that his master would return until he laid down for a painful horrible death. That man was found and received a small fine for what he did to the dog. If he could do it to a dog, what if it had been a child. I know people do that too, but it starts with animals and there needs to be much more severe punishments. No one will look for the person who did this.

I agree with Aziza her comps show she isn't very thin & certainly not emaciated ; additionally she's female which would place her in a smaller size category ... PLEASE HAVE HER CHECKED FOR A CHIP ; SHE MAY BE STOLEN WITH INTENT TO SELL ON THE STREETS .. In just like thank you Universe for her rescue to thrive ; instead of only surviving moment to moment in a lonely isolated hell which so many are left to die tethered ,chained, fought or baited .. Stand up against do fighting ; stand up against the corruption of authorities who won't fight for these dogs , instead support it ..there is evidence of dog fighting all around in Mississippi / Tennessee area I live ... Yet no discovery of actual fighting due to no investigating ..only the fake promises of shady sheriffs placed on the spot by the news media (reporters)

She looked pretty healthy (barely even thin) and was clearly socialized and friendly. Whoever left her probably knew she's be found relatively soon. Its a crappy situation for all involved when homeless people own pets, they may have the care and love, but just dont have the means and stability needed to care for a pet. Glad she was found, she'll make someone a sweet, jumping love bug.

I'm guessing that the homeless person who had been living there was surprised when the new owner entered the house, and evacuated so quickly that there was no time to take the dog. In the video, the dog is wheezing. That may be a sign of advanced heart worm infection.

And before you say he ought to have told the cops to call the humane society, well we don't know he didn't. Friendly dog, probably not an abused dog.

I don't like some of these comments. I mean I feel bad for the dog, and glad it was rescued and ticked that it was abandoned like that, but animals are not defenseless, and they sure as hell don't NEED us. dogs are the wolves who sold out to man. they gave us their love from the start. but they still have instincts, like any other animal, which is why they have those teeth and claws. but we get mad and scared by dogs who bite to protect their loved ones, which in my opinion, is wrong. were punishing dogs for being dogs, and it sickens me. we gave them the tools to survive (claws/teeth/protection love) but took away their freedom, and because their awesome, we took advantage of them, and expected them to know what we want. which is sometimes a bad thing, too. like some dogs need a mile of space to roam at LEAST, and we think its ok to chain them up. and they should be ok with it. sick. they can defend themselves, but they prefer to defend the ones they love, which can get kinda screwy,

“Jumping Bean has a remarkable spirit. Her personality is completely adorable, she loves everyone she meets and craves attention. She makes sure she is not ignored! She’s an energetic and very affectionate pup! She is so happy all the time.” This happens with human children too. But it is a sign of severe neglect, not their personality. So don't be shocked if this changes some day in the future when she had time to stabilize.

I don't think it was the previous owners. The real estate agent and inspectors would have found her. I think it was a squatter who, for some unknown reason, left the dog behind. Maybe got arrested? Who knows....

How can anyone just leave a living thing to die. Can you imagine how it must have felt just sitting there, waiting and hoping someone would return...?

My grandmother did this to my mom's childhood dog back in the mid/late 60s. It was pretty common apparently. People just didn't care about animals back then and for some, it still stands. My mom has still not recovered from that awful experience

It could have been an auction sale where you buy the house without an inspection, as is. Which would explain why the dog was not found sooner. Poor sweetie, glad she will be loved now, she certainly has tons to give!

They said that someone had been in the house since he bought it. So they might have already done the inspections before the dog was there.

I was weeping throughout the video. It appears this is a female and she had babies. I bet the squatter kept her long enough to have the babies so they could sell them leaving the poor mother behind to die. My faith in my fellow human is almost always sorely tested.

We'll never really know what happened. Jumping Bean looks in decent condition. Maybe the squatter knew they couldn't safely keep her, and knew the owner would be around soon. I don't agree with what was done - ever. Karma knows the intentions, and will settle the score down the road, if the intentions were evil. I'm just glad Jumping Bean is safe now. Her nipples (the dog's) would suggest she'd recently had puppies. I truly hope the "squatter" didn't take the puppies to sell and just leave her behind, but with a person who'd chain and leave a dog? I'm pretty sure all bets are off...

I too doubt that the dog was left purposefully, owner might have been incarcerated, ill or worse. He might have relied on a friend to care for the dog, glad doggie is safe, hope owner is too.
