Dr. Tsipursky explained that one of the most important ways that people's personalities differ from each other is a category called "openness to experience." According to him, it describes people who are more open to learning and trying out new things in life.

“Openness to experience is one of the ‘big five’ personality traits that research shows fundamentally differentiate people from each other,” Dr. Tsipursky said. “The five personality traits are: openness to experience (inventive/curious vs. consistent/cautious); conscientiousness (efficient/organized vs. extravagant/careless); extraversion (outgoing/energetic vs. solitary/reserved); agreeableness (friendly/compassionate vs. critical/rational); neuroticism (sensitive/nervous vs. resilient/confident).”

Something similar happened in the old whaling town of Eden, South Coast NSW, Australia. Between 1840 and 1930, Orcas (Killer Whales) helped herd the much larger Baleen Whales into the bay where the humans would finish them off. The humans would then share some of the catch with the Orcas (lips and tongue)

The book author claims that openness to experience, just like the other big five personality traits, is a range, not a binary. “Some people are highly curious, some people are moderately curious, some people are not at all curious. You can see this in toddlers - some like to run around and explore their environment, and others sit in the corner and play with blocks.”

When my mother had cancer her co-workers sent over containers of homecooked food to stock up the freezer and volunteered to pick us kids up from school, and relatives as far away as the UK sent so many flowers our house looked like a florist's shop for a while. So at least not everyone is this heartless. (Mum made a full recovery, and twenty years later she's still alive and well. :) )

This happened to me! I was diagnosed with cancer many years ago & suddenly everyone just disappeared. It was something I was completely unprepared for & got so bad I stopped telling people- even family! To this day I still say that the physical aspect of going through treatment & many surgery was not as hard (for me) as was the emotional aspect of having no one for support.

Mom didn't have cancer but when she died of lupus complications I was livid how many people just seemed to forget she existed until they read the obit and wrote us long, gushing sympathy letters. Yeah, but where were you when she was still here to hear those things? I have the disease myself and I notice when people disappear. Happens way more than before I got sick. Some people just suck.

Maybe it’s because people don’t want to be reminded it can happen to them, they can’t get over the different appearance, or maybe they are cutting ties prematurely so it doesn’t hurt so much if a friend goes to soon. Whatever the “reason”, it’s showing you are only thinking about you and how you feel. So you aren’t a friend after all.

It is extremely common for a male to abandon his wife when she becomes sick and unable to keep doing everything for him. Suddenly he can't sit around all day with a live-in maid and babysitter, he can't handle it, and he bounces. It's pathetic.

This is very normal, unfortunately. In 2000 I was diagnosed with liver disease and in need of a transplant. Amazing how quickly friends melted away. To be fair, it's something out of most people's experience and most don't know how to deal with it. They are not malicious, but prefer "easier" friendships.

I agree. I also wanted to say this. "Ghosting" implies a deliberateness, whereas I think people largely just don't know what to do and so end up doing nothing by default. Similar things happen after bereavements, sadly.

Unfortunately there are many people who somehow believe that cancer is a contagious disease (yes, I know some can be in a way - I'm talking about the ones that absolutely don't work that way). It happened when my grandfather got lung cancer - people were afraid of being around him for fear of catching it. A lot of the time it is pure ignorance about what cancer is and how it develops. This is why screening is so important.

I don't understand what people have against those with cancer. There are people who will literally be mad at you. I didn't mention it, but my mom felt the need to tell my then-bf's parents about my cyst in my pituitary gland that cause prolactinoma. When I was having dinner with them his mom asked in a weird, judgy kind of tone "It's not cancer, is it?" I told her it's not. There's a .05% of it becoming malignant but it's a benign tumor. The way she asked made the atmosphere a bit heavy and uncomfortable then on.

Let's keep in mind that being a caretaker is INCREDIBLY demanding. Some people are just not equipped to deal with the emotional and physical labour involved in being there for someone with a terminal illness. Its shitty, and yes there are a lot who are just sociopathic àssholes, but a lot are just flat out not equipped mentally/emotionally/financially to help and be there for someone they love who may be dying. There is no winner in those cases. Both sides lose and will feel like s**t.

How horrible this may sound, people tend to avoid what they cannot grasp, like mental illnesses, handicaps, but also people who have a (deadly) disease like cancer. They don't know what to do, what to say, how to behave around someone that sick.... As for partners, some cannot handle all the stress that come with it or just can't handle seeing their loved one deteriorate in front of them and they can't do nothing to prevent how sh*tty they are feeling. So, they back off, step away, disappear, vanish into thin air... the once that is sick, usually gets al the care and attention they need, partners are often forgotten and sometimes even expected to ma up, while their emotions are equally as important. So yes, some partners leave... the honest ones tell their SO the reason why, the ones that have never had to deal with something like the disease their loved one is facing, just break up or disappear... they just never learned how to react "When the going gets tough"...

Thankfully that didn't happen with me and hasn't happened with my mom. I was 19 so, of course, none of us had really dealt with something like cancer before. I've been in remission for 34 years!! My mom has had cancer for three years now. She's doing great and you wouldn't know she was sick to look at her and it hasn't slowed her down much. She has multiple myeloma. Her sisters, church, friends, and neighbors have all rallied around her the entire time. She just had covid for the second time (both times in August a year apart). Everyone brought food over to drop off. My dad is such a good caregiver to mom but he does appreciate it as much as she does. they live 2.5 hours away, so it's a comfort to me and my siblings that there's family and a support system there when we aren't.

The day, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I stopped at my "best friends" house in the way home. I just wanted a little support, and someone to talk to about it. I don't have a car, and I also wanted to see if she'd take me to my surgery. I wish to God, I had never said a thing to her about it! She thinks she's a Christian, follows some really weird religious sites, that follow the old testament. I'm raising my grandsons, and all she could say was; but, you're raising those boys? Why would God give you cancer, when they need you?! WTF! I know, what she's implying. That because I must be a really bad person, he gave it to me. That's how those people think, that she follows. No! It's usually, genetic! It was passed down to me! No, he gave it to you! It was horrible! I ended up walking out, and told her not to bother me ever again. Broke my heart.

Online friends of 18 years I never met took up a collection, 1 visited. 1 BFF called every single day but wouldn't visit, other visited during chemo 1x but rarely called. In-laws, who live close never checked on me but called hubby to see how he & kids were, parents called every day. People responded strangely but you can't let it affect you. When my mother was in a nursing home none of the grandchildren visited. One drove past on her way to and from work every day and never visited. Mom had practically raised most of the grandchildren. Mom always said if they couldn't see her while she was alive, she didn't want them standing over her casket crying because she was gone. Following Mom's wishes, I didn't tell anyone until she was buried. When they found out they all cut me off. My life has been better without them. I wonder if the 'ghosting' they feel is due to a personality change they (the survivor) doesn't realized has happened? A person does not survive cancer without going through some drastic life changes. (Thinking this from personal experience with a former friend who survived breast cancer.)

I walked away once. I still regret it. I simply didn't want to be around ppl anymore. I only knew them from university and spoke with them maybe three times but they kept my number. I chatted with them once for a long time on the phone when they were diagnosed and that was it. I changed my phone number and didn't give them the new one nor did I keep theirs. Now that I am older I do realize it was selfish of me, but I didn't think of them as a friend nor thought we would become friends.

People don't know what to say. Yes, this happened to my parents as they became ill. Can't dwell on that. Didn't count on some people after that. You have to decide what you're gonna do. Illness points out how vulnerable we are and most people can't take it. This does not make them mean, only human. (but you can remember this when they help)

"Today I Learned": 50 Curious Things About The World People Didn’t Learn At School (New Posts) TIL that in 2013 a climber found a box full of rubies, sapphires, and emeralds on a remote glacier on Mont Blanc. The story of the crash (or rather, crashes) is interesting too. The 'Malabar Princess' was an Indian chartered plane that went down on Mont Blanc in 1950. Due to bad weather and the inaccessible location, it was impossible to recover most of the wreckage, which was simply lost into the glacier. Now the spooky part: 16 years later, another Indian plane goes down in almost the exact same spot. Again, the wreckage is largely lost. Casualties of the second crash included a high-level scientist in the Indian nuclear program, spawning a number of conspiracy theories alleging CIA or Pakistani involvement in the crash.

When asked how we stay curious throughout life and what are the benefits of it, Dr. Tsipursky said that probably about half of our tendencies to be open to experience come from our genes, and half comes from our life experience and self-improvement efforts.

“That means we can learn to make better decisions when we shape our own personal openness to experience. In the modern world, it pays to be more open to experience than our intuitions suggest. Our intuitions are wired for the ancient savanna, when it was much more dangerous for our survival to be curious than it is right now,” he explained and added that “we should be more curious and stay more open to experience than our intuitions suggest.”

Many people feel a loss of motivation to explore new things as they age. “Research shows that teenagers are most comfortable with uncertainty, and become less comfortable as they become young adults,” Dr. Tsipursky said.

He continued: “And we become less and less comfortable with uncertainty as we age. We are evolved to be more exploration-oriented when young and when we are finding our place in the world, but our hormones change to cause us to be more oriented toward settling down and seeking comfort and certainty once we are older and find our place in life.”
