Netflix Warns People To Stop Doing The ‘Bird Box Challenge’, But Not Everyone Listens
Last year’s most obvious evidence of natural selection at work was the ‘Tide Pod Challenge,’ with the dumb, gullible and reckless voluntarily poisoning themselves for a few likes on social media. Well, we are only a couple of days into the new year and 2019’s stupidest craze has already arrived, with people walking around, driving and doing everyday things blindfolded to make ‘hilarious’ videos.
Known as the ‘Bird Box Challenge,’ it is inspired by Netflix’s recent thriller Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock. Her character and two children are forced to take a perilous journey while blindfolded, in order to avoid some kind of paranormal creature that compels people to commit suicide if they see it.
The movie has been a major success, breaking first-week streaming records with over 45 million views, and has inspired all kinds of memes and recreations. What began as some harmless fun, with people bumping into some furniture blindfolded, escalated quickly as people began to wander about blindly outdoors, sometimes putting themselves and others in danger.

Netflix has responded to the popularity of the challenge, not by encouraging people to refrain from doing it (it’s great free publicity after all), but to be careful and try not to get hurt. So there you have it. A streaming service feels the need to remind people not to put themselves in hospital because of memes. Welcome to 2019 guys.

Share on FacebookThis... just utter stupidity. Can’t say it beats Tide Pod but I just don’t understand why it’s worth it.
Anything that allows Natural Selection to weed out the polluted gene pool, could be a good thing, as long as innocent people are not caught in between. "Stupid Is, As Stupid Does", right?
Load More Replies...What exactly is the challenge here? And to simply get hurt, taking a hammer and hitting yourself is much more effective. Hm..."People, people! Follow Hans' hammer challenge (TM)! For every time you hit yourself, a kitten will be saved, and if you hit yourself hard enough, a puppy will be saved! Do it now, and do not forget to record it and put it on Youtube, so that your deeds will be preserved for eternity!"
Never, never do this. As a 10 year old we would play a game like "Blind Man's Bluff" on the way home from school that involved putting your coat over your head whilst the other person directed you where to go - obstacles etc. One time this girl steered me face first into a lamp post. I lost both my front teeth that day. Cant even remember her name but I still hate her
Load More Replies...There was an experiment done where scientist gave rats all the food and water they would need for years. They also had enough rats so that competition to find a suitable mate was very low. After a while, the rats, unbound from all semblance of the innate need to to find food or fight to reproduce, slowly but surely, went completely insane. Seemingly acting in frantic, unnatural and nonsensical ways...you see where I'm going with this.
It wasn't about not having to find food or mates, the study was about the effects of overpopulation and was specifically designed in such a way that mice were confined in relatively small cases, especially after the population grew in geometric progression. It would be a totally different story had they been provided with larger territory.
Load More Replies.....I am so sick and tired of all these "challenges". I swear to God if my husband dies because some idiot decided to drive their car while doing this "challenge", I will hunt them down and strangle them
Thin the herd, f**k it. While we're at it, it's time to remove warnings on s**t that, unless you are a fucktard of the highest order, should be common sense.
Yep - you see someone very nearly kill themselves with stupid stuff - and think "I know - will have a go myself"??. It's the things these idiots actually get RIGHT that needs a serious warning.
Load More Replies...The premise of the bird box, a woman could negotiate a river rapids blind folded is utterly stupid. Walking around blind folded unaided is utterly stupid. Here is an idea. Get a toddler's jig saw puzzle, ones that have less than 20 pieces and see if you can put them together by feeling the pieces.
Am I being too naive in hoping that this could make people more aware of how blind people live and the struggles they're facing on a daily basis?
That would be nice. But waltzing around blindfolded is pretty far from understanding a handicapped person's life.
Load More Replies...I'm wearing a blindfold so I can't see this idiocy unfold any further...
OMG The natural selection comment made me lose it xD!!! I think this challenge is fine AS LONG AS its like "paint your nails blindfolded" or something safe yet fun instead of dangerous things like car driving BLINDFOLDED. Cuz, um, I wonder where that could go wrong???
This is just insulting to the visually impaired. THEY DON'T HAVE A CHOICE and you're doing this for shits and giggles on youtube? WTF is wrong with people? Do you know how long the blind have to train and work with a cane and seeing eye dog to be able to get around properly? This is s**t, these people are s**t...
The one w the baby hitting the wall is just sad. NOT funny at all.
When dares like this make the rounds remember: It's better to be a live chicken than a dead turkey!
if adults & older kids want to do this, knock yourself out (literally!), but that one video with the toddler being run into the wall a couple times (by the father?!) was awful! way to parent...go back to the tide pod challenge (or better yet, the gasoline challenge--set yourself on fire), but stop inflicting your stupidity on defenseless kids!
I wish that insurance companies would make public statements declaring any claims void if damage caused by this kind of thing. If parents find out kids using their cars etc, that insurance costs will double and so on. Also huge companies should declare these people unhirable. If someone can get fired for public stupidity once already employed it should also work against them on job applications.
People were playing this game long before Bird Box, and it's safe as long as you play it somewhere safe and with someone trustworthy watching you to make sure that you don't get hurt. It's actually an interesting way to measure how much you rely on your eyesight.
Too bad there's no such thing as the "Common Sense" challenge. Everybody's a winner and nobody dies.
That isnt netflix, guys! Thats the creatures trying to get is to take them off! Dont listen!
Um, Not sure if I should bring this up, lest someone run a baby face first into oncoming traffic, but in the movie I watched, the blindfolds weren't necessary if you were indoors. So, most of these aren't true to the movie, but they're all equally cringe worthy. Literally smh!
Millennial #1: "Hey, we did some really stupid stuff last year. What incredibly stupid thing can we do to start off 2019?" Millennial #2: " You see that movie Bird Box?"
I'm a millenial...and I'm totally embarrassed by these people too believe me, its not all of us .
Load More Replies...Are people just this dumb or is nature just doing something causing people to do whatever to try and wound or even kill themselves? :P (Remember the movie "the happening"? :P )
There's no real evidence that very many people other than a few YouTube "personalities" ever actually did the Tide Pod Challenge. I don't think this particular example of human stupidity is that big a thing either.
I just LOL at this because of a few reasons 1) Netflix should of had a blind person advising them on reasonable things that people should do outside with blindfolds on (I mean why not use a stick yo guide you?) 2) These people in the videos are d*** idiots... however that being said My mother was blind and as such I was taught how to rely on my other senses more than my sight (probably a good thing because without my contacts I am blind as a bat! LOL) and periodically I like to try to navigate around areas at home and in public without my sight... so I feel confident I could do this challenge (although I am not dumb enough to try and drive while doing it)
I got a load of splinters in my face (and eyes) when I was a kid, had to wear eye patches for a week. Being blind sucks, but I guess emphasizing with people is good. Look at them fall in a swimming pool! ha ha ha ha.
I guess there's nothing wrong with doing it around your own house when other people are home. I actually chose to do this for a college project once. We had to study and carry out the lifestyle of the blind. I walked around the halls of the college blindfolded, while another student filmed it and guided me, lol. Then we filmed him at Burger King ordering a meal and eating it. It was pretty fun.
Netflix LOVES this, it was probably set up by them anyway as viral advertising. I am sad that a lot of people [see how I didn't say everyone] but a lot of people are really, really dumb. It hurts me to see this much idiocy. I am normally not one to write any insults online because it's beneath me but in this case I make an exception and it feels good because it is not only true but maybe it is the language that really dumb people understand. Internet "challenges" baah baah we are the incredibly dumb sheeple and do whatever the internet comes up with, because it's often for a good cauuuuuuuse bahhhhhhhhhhh". Oh it is so nice to be able to say it for once, deep from the heart!
People are just dumb as f**k. We may have just gotten to a point in our civilization that we need to start some form of "Carrousel" but instead of population control, it will be for stupidity.
It's patently obvious that our species is getting pretty stupid. I'm beginning to realize that technology, particularly the pervasiveness of computers/cell phones is the root cause as we are no longer required to actually think anymore.
I bet people in the 18th-20th century were thinking thought "Maybe in a few centuries we'll have flying cars".. and now we have people eating laundry detergent and walking around blindfolded. What's next - people intentionally choking themselves?
Oh, for fu**k's sake! Even the local newspaper wrote about how only netflix knows about this thing and how r****d do they look after their meme campaign (made by newly registered twitter accounts) or sudden reveal, that how many people watched this movie! Be real guys, if I had to watch the trailer of a movie every time I watch something on your page it doesn't communicate that it's a good movie, it communicates that this movie desperately needs viewers!
Sounds like some drivers on their daily commute are all gonna get the chance to play " pedestrian dodge ball" ! Obviously the blindfolded ones are worth triple points.😂
'Warning! Do not copy anything that might be dangerous to you or others' Internet: Hold my drink!
I'd say: "Let nature take its course." and stop warning people doing stupid things. If you're too dim to understand that you might get hurt or killed walking around blindfolded, you obviously aren't fit for modern society.
This is natural selection at work. Let the ones stupid enough to do this be winnowed out. Strengthen the herd.
I say let Darwin determine what happens to stupid people who do stupid things.
I don't think there is anything wrong with the Bird Box challenge as long as precautions are taken. This isn't like the Tide Pod, which could never be safe to ingest. The Bird Box challenge is a good way to understand the challenges that blind people face everyday. As long as there is someone there who can stop you from stepping into something that would hurt you, I think that this could even be an educational challenge.
I really admire how much you want to see a light in this nonsense, but it's just nonsense. These people aren't doing it to understand the challenges of blind people, they aren't doing for any cause or productive end. They are quite literally doing it solely because they saw it on a TV show and thought "Huh, well if that character in a fictional story can do it so can I!" and they actually believe that logic correlates.
Load More Replies...it's funny to see these people acting as if we did not grow up with all those shows saying "please do not attempt this at home". You guys can blame Millenials for being so stupid but it's only because of their need to document everything (for likes), but stupidity has been a running gene in humanity since ever.
