Woman Is Upset That Neighbors’ Shed Is Too Big, Calls Inspector, Regrets It When They Maliciously Comply
There’s nothing like getting a bit of sweet revenge against somebody who wanted to see you fail. And if that person also turns out to be a nosy neighbor with a penchant for making trouble? Well, we call that a double win.
Redditor u/Monteflash’s story about their neighbor went viral in a flash on the popular r/MaliciousCompliance subreddit. The author of the post explained how their nosy, troublemaking neighbor reported their shed to the city for supposedly being too large.
However, things took quite an unexpected turn, and the neighbor soon got a taste of her own medicine. Scroll down for the full story, in the OP’s own words, Pandas! Let us know what you think about the story, whether you would’ve done anything differently, and if you’ve ever had to deal with similarly bad neighbors yourselves.
Some neighbors simply love causing friction and stirring up trouble

The redditor’s story resonated with a large chunk of the r/MaliciousCompliance crowd. Their post got 21k upvotes and started up a fiery discussion about dealing with people in the neighborhood who want to make your life just a bit harder because they enjoy the drama.
After knocking a whopping two inspections out of the park, the couple finally had enough and decided to turn the situation around, in their favor. They reported their nosy neighbor’s property to the city. Especially the unsafe fire pit. They knocked it out of the park.
The sad truth is that not every single person in your neighborhood or building will be decent. Generally speaking, most people are perfectly fine to get along with. But it’s naive to assume that they’ll all be polite, will respect your boundaries, and will have enough common sense not to stir up trouble over nothing. Learning to deal with these neighbors is all about clarifying and enforcing boundaries.
According to Professor Suzanne Degges-White, from Northern Illinois University, the key to getting along with your neighbors is striking a balance between honesty and diplomacy.
She told Bored Panda that even though honesty is generally the best policy, “sometimes a person’s efforts at honesty come off a little too ‘brutal’ and feelings are hurt and relationships damaged, and no greater good is served.” Knowing when to hold back a mean word or two (even if they’re warranted) can help you avoid additional drama further down the line. It costs nothing to be kind and polite.
For instance, in some cases, some gentle feedback can help your neighbor become more aware of their own flaws. They might end up growing as a person. Meanwhile, being overly blunt while talking to them can cause them to resent you. Always remember that you’ll likely spend an awfully long time living next to those people. Do you really want to constantly live in stress?
“Another important consideration is that neighbors can impact our home lives in significant ways! You don’t want to have poor relationships with people you’re going to be in close proximity to each and every day. That’s added stress no one needs, given the amount of stress that we’re all feeling after the last couple of years due to world events!” Professor Degges-White told Bored Panda.
If you happen to find yourself cornered by a chatty neighbor who doesn’t understand privacy and boundaries, you can make up an urgent excuse to get out of the conversation. You can also tell them that you’ve had a long, stressful day, and need some peace and quiet.
At the end of the day, actions speak louder than words. If your neighbor doesn’t get your subtle and not-so-subtle hints about your need for privacy, just get on with your day and don’t engage with them. Hopefully, they’ll get the message.

Years ago, I bought rural property and worked the land and hustled to save enough to build a house. Only after the foundation was poured and the frame was up did next door complain. She claimed that my house was being built too close to the property line. I had the land surveyed again, it turned out I owned a large slice of what was thought to be her property. She glares at me in town whenever we pass each other. I did not start it!
Many years ago a car dealer built a new place. Home owner behind him didn't like the idea and tried to get it stopped. No dice. So once all construction was done, homeowner goes up to him, informs him he has built his retaining wall 3 feet on his property (fact). Told him he wanted $10K for that 3 feet (this was in the 60's so 10K was a good chunk of the entire property value including the house) Dealer told him no so he told the dealer to take it down. Homeowner got his 10K. Always know where your property line is.

We didn't know he had a view but we offered to move the house on the property if he paid for it. No dice. So we built the entire house and just when we put it on the market he complains to the county they it's too close to his property line. We were on our way out when we saw the county out there with measuring tapes so we stopped and asked if we could help. We did help them find the property corners and measure. We also offered to cut off the overhang if it was too close. They said, "Don't do anything until we make a determination." Turns out we were fine but the inspector wanted to know why there were so many cars next door and why the house was so dilapidated. We said they have a bunch of foster kids, maybe 5 or 7 and the kids were getting older now. The county issued them a bunch of violations for having a dilapidated house that took him years to resolve.
A local household had a tree house for their children in the back yard – it was there then they moved in. The nosy neighbour, annoyed by the sound of children having fun, complained about the illegal structure and the Council, which was constrained by the regulations, regretfully ordered it pulled down. The local Rotary Club heard about it and built the children a fully-compliant tree house.
I would ask if there were lots of young children next door before I bought the damn house if I didn’t like children

It's not big, but certainly enough for the inspector to offer to get the neighbors fined for that. In the end they both chose to buy the land they used rather than to get recorded paying the small fine, because both of them were school teachers with "good" reputation, but they fall short to my dad's higher hierarchy as a vocational high school headmaster. The good inspector helped us redraw the property line and smoothed out the land certification procedures.

NOBODY READS THEM! Sorry but if I wanted to read reddit posts I'd go to Reddit. If I want to watch TikToks, I'll go to TikTok not youtube shorts. Sorry, I'm becoming my dad - grumpy old man.
Well, then, delete your BP account, don't read anything on it, and just stick to Reddit. Your problem solved!

They also have tried getting us fined for having too many inactive cars, when they weren't. People care too much
I don't know why people are such malicious, nosy busy bodies, that have to harass other people and make their lives so difficult. I can't work because I'm sick, I get bored. I still live and let live. I mind my own business unless it personally effects me and just about everything doesn't.
I've got one somewhere near my new house. They called the cops on me when I was getting my mailbox lock changed, by a professional locksmith, like the post office told me to... Honestly who would pay 80 bucks per lock to break into mailboxes. 🙄 I'd been here for 5 months at the time, If there's such a lookie Lou I can't imagine they haven't noticed me being in this house either (a this not some random person)
Most building codes are crocks of c**p that exist just so the town can raise your property taxes.
Geez, and I thought it was to keep idjits from building unsafe structures that encroach upon OPs property!

Holy f*****g god - "a**l" is being blocked now?!? This site's moderators are so absolutely breathtakingly f*****g stupid.
Heck, bunch of fussers. Shed looks pretty nice. Apparently legal, having pulled a permit.
