My Kids And I Spent A Year Painting Over 1,000 Rocks And Hid Them For People To Spot And Photograph

A few months ago I shared some of the Family Friendly Street Art my kids and I make – painting rocks or sticks or leaves and hiding them around town to bring a smile to passers-by. This year we decided to massively expand the idea and take it to Grand Rapids MI during the world’s largest ArtPrize.

In the past, my three oldest kids and I would paint around 40 objects to hide in town. But this time around, all six of my kids and I spent a year painting over 1,000 rocks! We painted all of them in matching pairs. Half of them are gathered together for display at the Children’s Museum so visitors can grasp the scope of it all. The other matching half are tucked around town in random places for families to spot and photograph. It’s like a giant game of I-Spy… or a real-life version of Pokemon GO!

I love this idea, even without the attached art project/exhibit, I think it could make people smile to find something colorful like this where they don't expect it :)

I love this project! I love rocks, which is one reason, but this wonderful family activity is providing happiness and joy not only to the seven creators, but to everyone who sees them, either en masse or one rock at a time. Bravo and Brava to all! This post kept me smiling all the way.

Brilliant! Maybe I'll try doing this with my kids, they love painting and they love collecting small stones, rocks, minerals, so it sound like exactly for them :-)

What a fabulous idea, every town should do this and all the schools should get involved. I know that the children in my Daycare will be painting rocks this Autumn:~)

Such a truly WONDERFUL idea!! As a parent with 3 of my own children & 2 of my fiance's, (soon to be my own as well!!) ranging in age from almost 17 years old down to 5 years old, it's tough coming up with ideas that everyone will enjoy TOGETHER... I've GOTTA say tho, what a GREAT idea for EVERYONE!! Doesn't even have to be on a huge scale, yet I see it being fun for ALL of us. 😊
