My Greyhound And I Have Set Out To Change The Destiny That This Breed Suffers In Spain
Almost three years ago a Spanish Greyhound, the so-called Galgo, entered my world. I named her Bacalao and she changed my life in many ways. Besides enriching my everyday life in ways I hadn’t imagined, she also opened my eyes to the maltreatment that this breed suffers in my country, Spain.
The Spanish greyhound is used for hunting hares, and when they no longer live up to their owner’s expectations, they suffer the most horrible destiny imaginable. I found out that at least 50.000 Spanish Greyhounds per year are discarded. I kept imagining if it was my own dog who suffered this faith, and I decided that Bacalao and I should team up and try to raise awareness! So we started filming the documentary YO GALGO, while at the same time showing the beauties of living with a Greyhound on Instagram.

Almost three years ago a Spanish Greyhound, the so-called Galgo, entered my world
I named her Bacalao and she changed my life in many ways
Her long, pencil face and cute puppy eyes stole our hearts from the day we saw her
She was an active, playful and loving dog
Besides enriching my everyday life in ways I hadn’t imagined
She also opened my eyes to the maltreatment that this breed suffers in my country, Spain
This is Tzatziki, our second Galgo puppy. She was found in the trash, left to die
She was weak and thin, her back legs slightly rotated inwards and with an itchy skin
Some days have past, she is better, eating well and growing bigger
Tzatziki is curious and happy puppy
She is family now
But not every Galgo is that lucky. The Spanish greyhound is used for hunting hares, and when they no longer live up to their owner’s expectations, they suffer the most horrible destiny
I found out that at least 50.000 Spanish Greyhounds per year are discarded
It is a real hell what many galgos live on earth. Individuals left alone, invisible
Trained, traded, stolen, bred and killed in ways I couldn’t believe were true
Chance and luck made my Galgos have a different life from that of many brothers and sisters. I hope this story helps raise awareness and care for the Spanish sighthound
We started filming the documentary YO GALGO that, hopefully, will help to change the situation of Spanish Greyhound

* continued 8. I would defined,y donate as much as possible to it. Good luck for your cause. I hope you succeed. I wish I could help.
Load More Replies...*continued 4. Betrayal is the worst of them all. It's like they never loved you, never cared for you, they only wanted you for the money.
*continued 5. The documentary is amazing, informative, and well filmed. I would love to see it as an actual film, I think it would be
Load More Replies...I've always treated animals as best I can. I feel that they are just like us, they have feelings. They are not empty shells only used
*continued for certain purposes. This is horrible. These people are disposing of the animals in such horrible ways, I can't bear it.
Load More Replies...Your dogs are gorgeous! I have always been drawn to this breed because of their sleek lines. Tell us what to do....how to help! Is there a rescue to donate to, a place to adopt discarded dogs? Thank you for your big heart and your dedication to this issue. And what the hell is wrong with people who could discard or abuse such a beautiful and vulnerable creature. It's barbaric!
The more that social networking site expose about the cruel underbelly of humanity, the more depressed I am getting. We are the most heartless species really!!! Even predators kill their prey quickly and quite mercifully.
OMG I do not expect such dog treatment from Spainians. So sad. Every dog deserves a loving family. These creatures are better than people. Wishing you good luck!
*Spaniards. but you're right, I was disappointed too. This might happen in Asia (poverty does make people forget about animal welfare). But Spain? What a disappointment.
Load More Replies...They are such beautiful dogs, the way they are treated reminds me of foxes in Australia, they are pests but they too are left on the road
Agnieszka you have all the info about this project, YO GALGO, in www.yogalgoproductions.com
Load More Replies...Poor dogs, many christians (priests nuns etc or heavy believers) say that animals have no soul (due to our beliefs), they have feelings, they feel sadness and they breed and do just about everything we do, yet we say they have no souls, whatever bloody prick says this, can go die just like the dogs in these photos, get a life you christians, not only humans have souls.
A Spanish friend told me about this horrible situation that is happening in his country a year ago. I agree, it is truly terrible.
Unfortunately, the treatment of greyhounds isn't much better in the UK either.
Yesss, let us have more of these documentations. Animal protection has to become more prominent!
Doesn't Spain have dog pounds or animal welfare laws? I expected much from a European government. Such a disappointment. Set up a donation website or create a non-government organization for the welfare of these poor dogs. It's what we do in my country where the government doesn't care about animal welfare so we in the private takes over to do it (we are part Spanish so the mentality is kind of the same here, too)
