It’s Hashtags time, dear Pandas! The one, the only, the irresistibly humorous Jimmy Fallon is once again making us smile, giggle, and chortle when we’re supposed to be working or studying. This time, the critically acclaimed comedian has asked his loyal fun-loving followers to share the funny, weird, and embarrassing things that their family members have done or said. Naturally, when Fallon asks you to jump, you ask, “How high?” So people responded by posting under the #MyFamilyIsWeird hashtag, much to everyone’s amusement.

Samantha Scroggin, who runs the 'Walking Outside in Slippers' blog about parenting, told Bored Panda all about how families can develop fun (and weird!) little rituals that might seem quirky to others but help all of us deal with hard times. Read on for our full interview with her!

"One of my favorite ways to spend time with my husband and two kids is by goofing around, and I love little rituals and routines. Aside from the basic routines like waking up for school and work and having breakfast, and brushing teeth and reading books before bed, we love to pull out our karaoke machine and cheer each other on as we take turns singing Disney classics," Samantha, the founder of 'Walking Outside in Slippers,' told Bored Panda about the fun and lovable traditions in her own family.
"I think having little rituals and traditions unique to your family makes for important lasting memories the entire family can cherish. Those little quirky moments will probably stand out in a child’s memory much more than the everyday stuff," she told Bored Panda.
My dad taught my daughter to randomly say mummy farted when we were at the shops. Well One day I was at the checkout and my daughter comes out with "phoar, mummy farted, you stinky" even though I didn't. Thanks dad lol.
My dad has blamed farts on everyone in the house. Including the dog.
My dad would never announce it but his farts would be loud and smell horrible. He would just walk away and let you smell it.
I cracked off a wine toot in a dollar store once and it cleared the entire store and my husband comes up and says "really?" and I frigging died laughing because he knew it was me. Gross. Terrible. I needed to be arrested.
When I was a kid I did a loud burp at the table. My mum gave me a very disapproving look and said "What do you say?" "Thankyou" I said
I always blame my husband when we're in public. Luckily he's a good sport & will usually make some completely inappropriate comment - like, if we were in Target he would have said, "Oh, damn! Where's the men's underwear department?".

My family does this to each other all the time. We let one go and then walk away saying "GOD YOU SMELL" or "WHY DID YOU THAT" or "GOD! DO YOU HAVE NO DIGNITY"
In Samantha's opinion, rituals just like that help bring a little bit of light and a pinch of laughter into our lives that have changed much since the start of the Covid-19 lockdowns. "Life can be challenging, especially in a pandemic. Previously basic practices like getting up and going to school have changed entirely. For my family and me, humor has been a great way to help cope with the changes."
She continued: "If my kids see Mom and Dad still laughing and joking, their situation will probably feel a little less scary. We’re OK, and so are they. My kids also love when they can make us crack up over some little comic they drew or joke they tell. Laughing together is a positive experience all around."
For Samantha, there is only one way forward—fully embrace the weirdness and the goofiness! "At least in my family, we know we’re a bunch of weirdos and we embrace that. We all like to perform and act and be silly. But I think the way you behave is normal to you and your family. The key is to embrace the differences between individuals and families, and know that it’s those differences and quirks that make us all special," she shared, and we fully agree with her.
In a series of in-depth interviews, Bored Panda previously spoke about late-night TV shows, how they’ve been adapting to the Covid-19 pandemic, and how to get noticed by hosts like Fallon with Mike Sington, an LA-based entertainment, pop-culture, and celebrity expert who is known as Hollywood’s Ultimate Insider.
According to entertainment expert Mike, US late-night TV shows have been adapting very well to the year-long coronavirus pandemic, the lockdowns, and the constantly-changing restrictions. Now that multiple Covid vaccines are being rolled out, things are getting even better for the entertainment industry.
Mike revealed to us that one thing that we can most certainly look forward to is an easing of restrictions in New York City where they’ll be allowing audiences of up to 100 people in April. Talk about a breath of fresh air!
"I’m sure the shows will take advantage of that. My prediction is the late-night shows will be back to where they were pre-Covid this summer," the expert told Bored Panda.
In Mike’s opinion, there are several things that each and every single one of us can do if we want our posts to get noticed by Fallon and his team on social media. It’s all about persistence, patience, and (you could argue most importantly) having a fun, witty, interesting true story to tell.
“All the shows have social media teams that are writing and monitoring content. To grab the late-night hosts’ attention, tag the show! They will see it, they monitor every post they are tagged in,” Mike said.
“If the post particularly stands out, they will forward it to the writing team for the show. Other than that, it’s just a matter of luck, or a story gaining traction on social media. The writers are monitoring social media in general, combing it for content to use. You never know when something will catch their eye, and a great story is likely to pop and catch their attention."
Mike is a former senior executive at NBCUniversal, so he intimately knows how the entertainment industry works. Earlier, he detailed to us that TV hosts source material directly from social media because it’s a great way to engage with their audiences and stay connected with them.
Even though late-night shows have lots of great writers to work on the material that we all love to see on our screens, there’s not much that can “top the personal, and often very funny, contributions of the fans themselves,” Mike highlighted.
In Mike’s opinion, late-night hosts have done a fabulous job surfing the waves caused by the constantly shifting Covid-19 regulation landscape. They’ve had to greatly adapt to the new rules, a lack of a live audience, and a world that spoke almost exclusively about pandemic-related topics.
“I commend the late-night hosts for soldering on during this months-long lockdown. So many people are isolated and alone now, and they are welcome and familiar faces we can safely bring into our homes,” he said.
This makes me nostalgic! I used to do that with the Debbie Gibson Electric Youth samples.
“I would even say what they have been doing over the past several months has been somewhat heroic because it hasn’t been easy for them. They knew early on though, the need was there, and they stepped up to the challenge.”
Entertainment expert Mike believes that the material that late-night shows have been putting out over the last year has been great, even if it’s been different. He’s seen an improvement in the quality, in his pro opinion.
Well, have you explained female anatomy to him yet? Otherwise it's not at all weird he doesn't know about bodies unlike his own. We all tend to think our experiences are universal until we learn they are not.
“I think their material has been better than ever. Over the past year, there’s been a wealth of material in the news to utilize. The energy is there, but it’s a bit different. They’ve had to adjust to trying times and having no audience, but have done so admirably.”
He continued: “What they’re doing is paying off in the ratings which have been stronger than ever. They’ve been providing much-needed comfort and familiarity that people are craving now."

This made me think of something: did your parents hide your Easter basket for Easter morning? My whole Catholic family does this. It was only after I had my first kid that I learned no one else does this. I started looking for a good place to hide her Easter basket and my husband (at the time)thought I was crazy hiding the basket. I started asking around and only my family did it. We hide eggs off course, too. But it was fun waking up Easter morning searching for the basket. Best hiding place is the dryer.
There was actually an article about how to do this in a magazine...maybe 60 years ago. I think it was Women's Day. How to cook the roast while you drive to the cottage.
It happens. A stranger hugged me while I was in line at a cafeteria. He thought I was someone else, and his wife apologized and explained that they both thought I was someone they knew.

When I was a teenager my mom, sister and I went to pick up my father from the airport. When we arrived we found a wheelchair in the parking lot and my mom wanted to bring it back into the terminal. She convinced me to sit in it and she wheeled me into the terminal, people holding the door open for us and finally I had enough and got up and started walking away. As soon as I did that she screamed out “it’s a miracle!”
My region in Spain has two big festivities one the national festivity and another one the local one (commemorating the christian armies conquering the area from the muslim ones). Our family has the tradition of never eating spanish food on the national day (usually we eat french but it can be something else) and ti eat moroccan food in the regional festivity. I always found it a funny way of laughing with this old outdated festivities.
When my now husband and I were dating, he'd embarrass me by asking in Tiffany's, or Cartier, If they happened to have a sterling silver spork? Of course they didn't. And I'd get so embarrassed. And hide in a corner. So to get him back, I bought a silver spoon, and had it cut into a spork. And gave it to him for christmas. and Spork Club was born. My family has a vaguely cult - like tradition that everybody does when they turn a certain age or marry into the family- like an initiation XD all safe and purely silly, of course. I would say more, but we aren't allowed...
My mother was freakish about cleanliness, and also had a very prickly personality. She was always carrying some kind of cleaning product, or implement. Every time she walked by my dad carrying a broom, he would say, “Going for a ride?”. We thought it was hysterical. Her, not so much.
We have a very hill-y uneven back yard, but our front yard is nice and flat. So I practice sword and bo work in the front of the house, in sight of all the neighbors. My kids hate it, I am a horrible embarrassment and ruining their lives. Not gonna stop though.
My family tells made up stories about people we don't know or even neighbours we don't know so well. Person passing by might get a whole life story. Like: "she used to be a housewife but her husband cheated on her and they separated. She found new courage and passion and now she's a top notch real estate agent. She recently bought pretty house for her and the kids and last vacation they spent hiking in Asia." Our summer cottage neighbour went 20 years by made-up first name until grandpa said something like: "his name isn't Jack, it's Patrick". I think we also invented a profession for him. I love that these stories are mostly wholesome and funny.
I do this with a friend of mine when we are sitting and people watching.

Me and my sister would make up weird songs because one time she was trying to write a song and asked me for help. I changed the lyrics to make no sense and it was hilarious. So now we make up songs about random things. 😂
When my brother and I were kids, pre 9/11, we'd try to set the metal detectors off at the airports with various shenanigans. My brother once stuck his entire pin collection on his shirt then wore a sweatshirt to hide it. Another time I failed, so we started just shooting quarters through the metal detector until it beeped. My parents HATED IT but hey, my brother and I thought it was hilarious. So I guess we are pretty weird too.
When I was a kid, many decades ago, we went through some hard times. We sold pretty much every stick of furniture in the house to buy food. When times got better, we eventually bought beds, dressers, table and chairs, but I think I was out of school before my Mom had a desk again. When we sold the desk, we put all the desk stuff in a big box marked "DESK", and it was our "desk box". Need scissors? In the desk box. Paper? Desk box. Pens? Desk box. I was at a friends house after a few years of this, and got a funny look from him when I asked him where his desk box was. "My what?" "Your desk box. You know, where you keep pens, paper, scissors ..." "You mean the desk?"
my family... We ate spaghetti and garlic bread like everyone else...but I would only eat peanut butter...so! Garlic bread with peanut butter scooping up my spaghetti! everyone in the family eventually tried it and then everyone was eating it that way it. It's SO GOOD!!! I still eat it that way. :-)
I've played "Cards Against Humanity" and "Joking Hazard" (the latter of which is a similar and equally rude game inspired by the comic Cyanide and Happiness) with some family members on two separate occasions. I don't remember the outcome of the first one, but I won Joking Hazard... I'm also the youngest of the group.
my family had weird toast chants. whenever the toast popped, everyone in earshot of the toaster would yell "toast arrived!" so the person would know to go get it. most of the time the owner of the toast would yell it too, though....... there was also a song thing; it was like "ThAtS waht you DO with TAOST!!" *pop pop* the pop was someone pushing on the jam lid.....yeah. i don't know what it was with our family and toast, but it's still a thing actually, 11 years later.
You will all be made painfully aware in the coming weeks or however long it takes me to get bored of this site how I am the weird one in the family.
Every egg my mom ever cracked open she would take a fork and remove the little white blip that she thought was chicken sperm. Yep, inherited sexual dysfunction.
Our family has Tourette's and if you say something like yeah John is competitive he pipes up and says"you're competitive!". Well a year ago I was explaining why I broke 2 fingers in my right hand playing golf, and explaining that they only had right handed clubs, and even though I'm right handed I play all sports left handed, and they had no left handed clubs. My youngest son yelled "you're right handed!" Um, yes genius, I am!
