Mothers Are Applying Make Up Before Giving Birth And Not Everyone Is On Board With The Trend
Childbirth is painful, tiring, messy, and now, glamorous? Women around the world are blending and contouring with the ongoing trend of applying makeup before giving birth. We aren’t talking about a touch of mascara or some undereye cover-up to freshen up your face. No, these mothers are doing full face makeup that is Instagram ready.
It might sound bizarre to some to prep for the camera during this strenuous time, but a study from Cosmetify revealed that 64 percent of women aged 18 to 31 get beauty treatments before going into labor. That includes hair removal (65 percent), a manicure (57 percent), pedicure (43 percent), spray tan (37 percent), or a blow-dry, cut, or styling (32 percent). While glamming up for this life-changing occasion is not exactly a new thing, women have different reasons as to why.
Women around the world are preparing for childbirth by applying makeup

The real image of childbirth has been stigmatized for centuries, and women have felt pressure to hide the very unpolished reality. Social media has presented a whole new pressure to this equation for some. In the same study, respondents were asked why they were so concerned about their appearance following childbirth. Among the top reasons were looking good in photos (31 percent), looking presentable for visitors (26 percent), or avoiding looking ill, drained, and tired (22 percent). A different study revealed that the average woman applies face makeup within two-and-a-half hours of giving birth. Another fellow beauty influencer Dana Chavez checked to make sure her contouring was on fleek and her eyebrows shaped up for her labor.

Lee Ann Jarrell took her childbirth glam so seriously that she said she ‘refused’ to give birth until her makeup was all done in 2018.

For some women, the pre-birth makeup ritual served as a distraction to keep their minds off the pain of the contractions, while others chose to apply their makeup post-birth for Instagram pics.

New York makeup artist, Alaha Karimi, went viral for the three makeup prep photos she shared back in 2016. According to her interview later with ABC News, she said the glam-up provided a much-needed distraction from her contractions. “I went to the hospital at 7:30 a.m., and I was in labor for a total of 10 hours that day,” she told ABC News. “I had an epidural around 8:30 or 9:00 a.m., so when it started to wear off, I needed something to distract myself from the pain.”
Alaha had her beauty photos go viral in 2015 when she shared images of herself in the process of applying her make-up followed by another pic of her experiencing contractions in the middle of it.

Women should always consult with their doctors when it comes to product safety. “Lists are always ordered from largest to smallest in terms of ingredient quantity,” New York-based makeup artist Mary Irwin told The Bump. “Remember, the first three things listed will be the most active. Also, the smaller the list, the less likely you are to have a reaction.”
US blogger Brianna Lynch struggled to apply her make up wrapped up in a blood pressure cuff around her, this took true talent to achieve.

“During pregnancy, the skin is often turning over more quickly, so you can accumulate dead skin and sometimes require more foundation,” says Shilpi Agarwal, MD, author of The 10-Day Total Body Transformation and board-certified family medicine physician in Washington, DC.

Not all women who want to get dolled up do it themselves. Makeup artist Tegan Woodford, from Queensland’s Gold Coast, was called in to do a makeover for her sister-in-law as she was going into labor.

“I got a phone call from my sis-in-law at 2am saying she had her first contraction,” recalled Tegan, and said she immediately jumped on the next flight to Adelaide.

Even before they make it to the hospital some women plan ahead of their scheduled deliveries and make lash appointments like expectant mother Christine from Northern Ireland.
According to the Arizona OBGYN Affiliates: “Most makeup products, such as powders, foundations, mascaras, eyeliners, etc. are safe to use during pregnancy, as long as you avoid those makeup products that contain retinoids or salicylic acid.”
People’s reactions were mixed
Some thought putting make up in the delivery room was a bit too much:

Share on FacebookI don't care about makeup at all, and seems a little shallow considering the occasion, but if u can feel pretty in one of the happiest (and painful) days of your lives, I don't judge.
Load More Replies...I'm surprised that much makeup is even allowed at the hospital. There's nothing wrong with some (waterproof) mascara and a little concealer but false lashes, glitter eyeshadow and heavy contouring? What the hell? The amount of makeup and brushes these women had in their hospital bags is insane. If you're that much worried about how you look during the most natural thing on earth, then there's seriously something very wrong with you. This is vanity beyond reason.
I'm not. It isn't going to harm the laboring mother to do her makeup, and it could even be a pain management technique (especially is mama doesn't want pain meds). Labor is weird. Sometimes it's just nice to be in control of something during a time where you can't control what all your body is doing.
Load More Replies...I'm ok with the makeup thing, everyone should do what it's best for them, however i knew that, in hospitals, if there is the possibility to undergo a surgery, you should not wear makeup or nail polish, as skin or nail colour is an indicator of good/bad health....
During my both deliveries I was sweaty, bloody, crying (both of pain and happiness) and I really could care less how I looked. And I was way too proud of my babies to even have myself in the picture, babypictures only for months :-)
Can't/ even read this one. Dumbest thing I've ever seen. Shallow s**t.
What does it matter if they wanna put on make up? When I started having contractions I didn't actually give birth until 12 hours later. Some women are in labor for longer than that. If you have time to kill and can deal with the contractions, what's the big deal if you wanna use 30 minutes of all that time to put on some make up? Obviously you're gonna take pictures once you've had the baby, they just don't wanna look dead after all that. They're gonna have those pictures forever. They're pushing a human being out of their body and if they wanna take 30 minutes to put make up on so they feel better about themselves, let them be. Geez.
Whatever you need to do to make yourself feel a little better before giving birth, I say go for it. Make up, a bowl of Cap'n Crunch, or dancing the hokey pokey, it's all good.
I'm sorry, but this is utter narcissistic b******t. What matters is the new life you're bringing into this world, not ensuring you have the perfect smoky eye.
I thought hospitals dont allow makeup or even moisturisers in labor or OT as they can interfere with doctors’ diagnoses.. doctors have to look at skin colour, smell etc in case of complications..
They are the one giving birth and they should be allowed to do it their way if it helps make them feel better and more comfortable or confident. They are not hurting the baby so who cares? There's no reason to shame them! I gave birth to 3 kids and I couldn't care less what I looked like. And even if I did, everything went so fast there was no time for this. This was my choice and no one shamed me for it. These women deserve the same respect.
I mean if they just feel like putting on makeup or are just doing it for fun, there's no harm. Nobody's forcing them or saying that they need to Put on makeup, they just kinda did it, so don't cause a rally
In my daughter's birth photos I look like I spent the last 32 hours trying to force a bowling ball-sized human out of a small cavity. I love that they show things as they really were, as unglamorous as it was.
"The real image of childbirth has been stigmatized for centuries" I was either living under a rock and have never heard of said stigma, or this is simply made-up. Childbirth is a very intimate moment and is usually reserved for close family, as well as the pictures from it. At least, that's what the culture reflects. If you want to make it public due to the rise of social media, that's your choice. I've seen literally thousands of photos of women giving birth and I've never heard anyone say "ew, her face is fugly".
Why do we need to judge them? I wouldn't do it, but it's their choice. Society is way too ready to criticize women for whatever they do.
I mean s**t, you have time to kill while waiting. I haven't done it but I get it, tons of pictures WILL be taken, might as well look good if the opportunity is there 🤷♀️
That's not extra, that's just sad that you're so stuck on yourself that much that you can't even take a break and focus on your unborn child. Even up to that moment it's all about you. SMH.
Goodness, these women are about to push a baby through their vaginally. If they want to put on make up to look pretty, let them. What's the big deal?
I would say whatever makes them feel good, but isn't this kinda dangerous? In case something goes wrong it will not show up on face, some signs of problems could be masked, literally. Health of baby and you is what should be nr 1 priority.
I mean if the hospital is okay with it, and it doesn't harm the mom in anyway, e.g. if they need to have surgery. I've never had surgery but I don't think you're allowed to wear makeup. Not sure though. I mean I know I feel much better with a bit of mascara and eyebrows because I'm self-conscious about my small eyes and non-existent eyebrows. If it makes you feel better and it's harming you then do it. It's not about social media, even my aunt wore some makeup in the 1980s when giving birth to my cousin.
Man...now that takes dedication. I was too busy suffering in agony to be putting on make up during labour yeesh. That being said, my c-sections i did my hair and makeup before hand but a surprising amount came off but I didn't bother retouching
I was not convinced that these or any other women were doing this specifically for social media (only 30% said it had anything to do with pictures at all) or that there has been an actual increase in this practice since social media became a thing. There have long been the women who would never be seen by anyone without their full face of makeup. There have long been women who made their husbands shave them because they were afraid of the delivery team seeing their hairy legs or worse. My grandma labored with curlers in her hair, that was normal. Yeah, women shouldn't feel pressured to feel beautiful EVER and certainly not mid or post birth. But I don't like the conceited-bitches-taking-selfies angle . Most of the women they mentioned are make up professionals and explained that it was NOT for social media. They framed a woman going to visit her sister-in-law when she went into labor as being flown in for a last minute make over. WTF? Shine on you painted face weirdos, it's your life.
I feel so sad for these women. Imagine being this insecure, this concerned with other people's opinions that you waste your energy making yourself "pretty" during a once-in-a-lifetime event when your appearance should be your last concern.
I think it's absolutely ridiculous that other people have the needs to judge what women do to make them happy during the most painful yet best experience of their lives. The men have no room to even speak on this judging they can't even carry or labor a child so their opinions are absolutely irrelevant. And other women who compare their birth experiences as if it makes them any better to not where makeup is insecure and gross. Let people be themselves!!
Seems like a whole lot of insecure women keeping the rest of us down because who the heck wants to rely on a woman that cares only about how she looks. I think your baby would like to be near your skin not up against a ton of foundation, yuck
Family history has my gran going into labor with my mum - yelling for my grandpa to grab her handbag as they were heading into the hospital so she could put on her lipstick. Bless her - she NEVER left the house without lipstick. Fast forward 60+ years and her last day in hospital, you guessed it, she had us help her to put her "face" on. (Though she did have a word for ladies who wore **this** much makeup, haha).
After reading the comments it seems to be a consensus that it is ok to glam yourself up prior to giving birth....Now in MY DAY (eldest is 50) that would not have been allowed or was it even considered as everything had to be sterile..We even had to have an enema....Makeup would not have stayed on anyway bc the baby was stuck sideways. No epidurals then. No pain meds as it would harm the baby..On day 2 was finally taken into a big OR but stayed awake for most of the time until the baby's foot was out but now he was doing the splits so they gave me gas and strapped me down and cut me from vag to a**s and beyond and got him out..I had stiches from hell and got an infection....C-sections were very rare...So, If you ladies feel like a better mom for glaming up, by all means do it...I didn't, but then again, I was georgous without it.
Nah you ugly as f**k and old as s**t, you’re not better than anyone because you didn’t wear makeup. Makeup can be therapy for some moms and who are you to judge old ass? Lmao
Load More Replies...Well, it's not something I would do or would applaud to. But it is quite harmless, right? Some women dance, some sing, some do makeup. Oh what's disturbing (to me, just my opinion, so I'm sorry if it offends you) that these soon to be mothers really think, that is important to look perfect during a labour? That they don't find themselves pretty without make up? (to me that's the saddest part, that people can't stand who they actually are) Do really people look back at their post labour photos judging themselves about their looks instead of just staring at the tiny baby and remembering the joy they had? Really? I find it very sad. But here it comes again, we are living the Calhoun's experiment now, so that is how the "beautiful ones" are giving birth. :D :D I'm old school. I had the lights off in the hospital room, there was literally no one to stare at my "beauty", I was on my 4, my head down... Nothing fancy, nothing for a magazine cover, just animal giving normal birth. :D :D
I know one woman that insisted on C section so she could have hair/nails/makeup done before going to the hospital just to look good for Instagram and Youtube. She's already an extremely attractive person even without a drop of make up but apparently not 100% flawless so... oh well.
This is honestly sick. What if your child is allergic to that make up.. So vain.
Are they hurting anybody/ their baby by doing their makeup and wanting to use it to maybe distract themselves from a painful labour? If not, then why judge them?
The funny thing is - a Mama with her newborn baby is absolutely radiant so long as she is happy. If they are so very worried about their looks that they would do this, what are they afraid?
I want to see them post birth when they are trying to survive on a few hours of sleep and getting showered and dressed by 11am is considered a major milestone. Good luck in trying to keep a squishy blob alive and look your best while dealing with leaking boobs, post natal bleed, baby blues and a house that looks like it just exploded. These women seem so shallow and vain.
The pics with moms wearing makeup while holding their babies look sooo unnatural as hell! It doesn't make it look cute at all moms! If you wanna be presentable for pics like prepping your hair- not meaning doll it up, is cool, but the full on makeup and hair done is so unnecessary and doesn't look right. People like natural and ppl understand that you just pushed out a human being!
I am disgusted. These 'women' should seriously reconsider being parents. Being a good mother is a tough, challenging, dirty job, from the moment of birth until they leave home, and even then. That anyone would like their photos is unreal. How vain and ignorant. They look like painted fools.
This is really gross and kind of sad. How shallow and f'd up has our societies gotten that looks are more important than experiencing one of the most intimate parts of our lives, bringing another life into the world? I feel awful for these poor children. If mommy is more worried about getting her Instagram picts out you can pretty much guarantee these kids are going to be neglected.
Why do people care what others do?! If you want to put on make up, do it! If you dont, dont! LIVE AND LET LIVE!
All I can say is to the babies: good luck growing up with a narcissistic mother, it's not very much fun. Seek therapy AS SOON AS YOU ARE ABLE and stay in school so you can escape as soon as possible.
It seems a little crazy that said very very few people have seen pictures taken of me just after birth with my newborns as I feel I look horrid so I can understand it from that perspective
so ironic that that Alaha girl was saying "nor does [my body] do well with any unnatural processes", and then literally the next sentence is how she had her husband go get her makeup. it's one of the most "unnatural" things you can do to yourself. Of course, I respect that this is their jobs, but I feel like this one in particular is so sadly ironic.
These whores are too stupid to be having children. Where's sterilization when you need it?
Its never too early to show your kids how much of a fake twat you really are.
Put on that makeup! At least they have chosen to have the baby. The one thing I don't understand is when I had my 2 there would have been no makeup left on my face due sweating from labor pain. Must be giving some good drugs nowadays. I guess in today's world no one wants to be seen with ugly labor face.
So freakin self absorbed !! 🤮. Perhaps concentrating on delivering a healthy child would be a little more apropos ?? Ya think ?
Water broke, rang hospital, they said have a shower and breakfast and come on in, I also did a bit of makeup and especially mascara, I have blonde eyelashes so I look WEIRD AF without mascara. Had baby (via c-section), cried, eyes on point! win! Just let people do what they want.
My mum actually had makeup on while giving birth to me 28 years ago. Apparently it was an induced birth, so she had time to get ready. She braided her hair, put on makeup and went to hospital. She says, she wanted to look good for me and she wanted to look better so that she could feel better when the contractions hit. Plus, she really enjoys looking at the albums now cause even while heavily pregnant, she looks super pretty.
I find it beyond awful. Some light make-up, ok, but seeing all those brushes alone... really too much and unnecessary. And don't give me that "her body, her right" talk, they are entitled to their opinion and matters, and I am entitled to mine.
Let them do whatever they want while they push a human out of their bodies!!!
I think that the birth of a child brings one closer to the nature and to our origins. And makeup is no way natural and it also looks completely wrong next to a newborn baby. Why is the way one looks becoming a priority? Is it all just for social media? If yes, I believe it is not right. It is okay to look tired yet happy after birth, it is all natural. I think that this trend is absolutely absurd, however, it's up to the mother to choose how she wants to look like.
What's wrong with wanting to look nice whilst also expelling a human? They're not being forced to do it.
As if that's important in this situation - or others. Idiots!
Some of it is a little over the top - why do women so young wear that much foundation in the first place? They’ve got the best skin in their lives right now. ...///... Sigh... ...///... MOST of the women I know went for a good haircut (no time for fussing with hair after, they get something that only requires a comb to look good), a pedicure, and a no-chip manicure. Most also went for a massage and a facial as well. ...///... As one put it.... “I’m as big as a house, my ankles are swollen, and I haven’t seen my own feet in a month. My skin is blotchy, my back hurts, and I’m tired. I’m going for one last spoiling before I have this baby.”
I stopped wearing make-up when my kid turned 2 years old. It was hard to keep up looking nice when I spent half my time chasing him down and running errands to make sure he stayed happy, healthy and educated. Funny thing is..now that he's grown (27) and I'm hitting midlife, I have better skin and less wrinkles than my friends that insisted on wearing makeup every day of their life. You wonder how much damage that make-up really does. All the pulling, painting and primping comes as a price. Now it's a situation of where my son gets mistaken for my brother. Let's see if these women can pull that off in 25 years time...
Load More Replies...I'm not on board with this because childbirth is a natural thing, and makeup is not.
Do you read stuff on your phone while sitting on the toilet? Because s******g is a natural thing, and phones are not.
Load More Replies...This is just so sad in my opinion that in that very moment makeup is what is important, I can't tell you now it was the last thing on my mind
I think it is okay, it is understandable, but one time we have this patient who have expensive variety of make-up in her bedside table (applied to herself to ease boredom being in the hospital) but when she started trashing about the healthcare system about how can she buy medications where in fact she have a hard time buying healthy food for her kids... blah, blah. that i could not understand.
If it makes them feel relaxed, why should they not do it? If they make it to exploit a beautiful moment for social media attention, these women ought to be pitied. I hope, however, that they at least did not smear the tons of make-up onto their newborns. They want to cuddle without any artificial stuff...
When I'm feeling sick or having a chronic illness flare up, putting on makeup can help my mood and give me confidence. I may feel like garbage on the inside but I look great on the outside! These women are likely doing the same thing. For pregnant mothers, labor can be painful, scary, exhausting, extremely personal, and a vulnerable experience. If putting their war paint on makes them feel better let them do it! Damn.
What happened to being concerned with a happy and healthy baby being delivered? If this is a sign for the child to come out of them, be prepared for playing second fiddle to a make up brush.
Honestly, I don't care what you do to be more comfortable when you deliver. That shouldn't even be up for debate. My issue is hospitals are just germ hotels and I would burn anything I brought into a hospital. The first thing I do when I've ever come home is shower and put my clothes in the washing machine. That's a lot of expensive makeup to throw out!
Some of these women go way too far with the birth makeup idea (e.g. refusing to give birth until their makeup is done!) But if an expectant Mom wants to apply a moderate amount of makeup as a distraction from the pain of contractions, I see nothing wrong with that. Max L. mentioned no makeup for eye surgery. This seems obvious, but when I had cataract surgery several years ago I got a booklet explaining how to prepare for surgery, what to do / not to do. It said, "Do not wear eye makeup." I asked the assistant in the doctor's office if women really show up for surgery wearing eye makeup. She replied, "Yes, they do."
I like the idea! I am from middle eastren and putting makeup all the time is part of my culture! So, it is so natural to me to have it on! it is about taking care of yours and feeling better about life! I love it and I always put my lipsticks and eyeliners on even if I go through a crisis!!! I see it as me being powerful to keep up with all the situations! My friend's mom had heart surgery! the daughters put makeup on her and took her photo so she could see herself in a the phot fresh ---- I LOVE THE IDEA!!!!!
Makeup no makeup, their call, but this is not to self soothe, this is stage makeup, to look good under lights and for cameras, so they are using their babies to self promote, call a spade a spade and all that, but there's lots worse ways to parent out there, so these babies will most likely make it through ok...
If you need a distraction I would understand, but just because you're "extra"? seems a bit much in my opinion....
if it distracts you from pain and makes you feel better, go for it. I find it odd if it's all about the social media posts. this is a time to live, not a time to post to social media in my opinion. and wtf with the fake eyelashes?? ack. they look ridiculous. they are for the night time, like going clubbing. they look so dumb. it's like women have forgotten you're supposed to trim those things to look more real. it's like they enjoy how fake they look.
I don't care about makeup at all, and seems a little shallow considering the occasion, but if u can feel pretty in one of the happiest (and painful) days of your lives, I don't judge.
