I Took These 22 Brutally Honest Photos Of Moms To Show What “Mother’s Day” Really Looks Like
Everyone talks about how special motherhood and parenting are. The bond shared with a child is unlike any other; it’s a magical journey that is rewarding and satisfying, and I couldn’t agree more. I love being a mom, and it’s the best job in the world. I am a mom of two boys and love them to pieces, but Raising kids is not always all rainbows and butterflies.
Motherhood is not remembering what it’s like to get a whole night’s sleep and wiping more poop than you ever thought you’d see in your life. Raising kids is no longer having privacy, never peeing or showering in peace. Motherhood is using your shirt to wipe runny noses and dirty faces. Life with little children is learning how to do everything with one hand while carrying a baby in another. Motherhood is waking up with a bit of butt or foot in your face. Motherhood is breastfeeding whenever, wherever. Motherhood is yoga pants and bad hair days. Motherhood is no longer shopping alone. Motherhood is a filthy car all the time. Motherhood is not being able to call in sick because it’s a 24/7 job without a paycheck, and the list of everyday problems goes on. But in the end, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Having young kids and being a mom means being completely overwhelmed by love, joy, responsibility, and selflessness.
With the help of my mommy friends, I created this little intimate photography project just in time for Mother’s day, to remind everyone what motherhood really looks like. Some might find these interesting pictures raw, but that's how it is in real life.

Sometimes Moms Need A Time Out To Have A Sip Of Wine And Check On Their Phones
hahahahaha! love it! I remember when bananas in Australia cost heaps ($12.00 AUD a kilo), I would have to sneak away from the kids to have one.
Motherhood Is Breastfeeding Whenever Wherever
Probably an unpopular opinion but if a kid can ask for the breast they are probably too old to be breast feed.
Unpopular yes, but also scientifically unfound. The WHO recommend breastfeeding untill 2 and beyond and the natural weening age for humans is between 4 and 7. We as a western society arent used to seeing toddlers and children breastfeed because from the 50's to the 80's formula companies spent millions on marketing campains. In the 80's a law was passed that the formula companies arent allowed to advertise for formula for younger babies ( up to six months). Which is now why we find it acceptable for young babies. You're basically believing what multinationals want you to believe.
Load More Replies...People complaining about the kid's age... do you guys drink milk? cow's, goat's, whatever?, well that's the same, if the cow, goat didn't give you the milk, would you drink it from your mother?. Adults don't need milk and still drink it. At the end is the mother's decision.
I like the sentiment, but the impact is blunted somewhat by the conspicuously obvious staging of the photo. I wish that something like this could have been captured with a more spontaneous feel, in the same way that the not-shopping-in-peace item appears.
You people talking about how the kid is too old to breastfeed really make me sad. Statements such as, "If they're too old to ask for it..." and the like are completely arbitrary and have no scientific evidence to support them. If you think it's "creepy" for a mother to feed her child YOU are the one who is warped. Educate your ignorant self...
Breast feeding is natural, beautiful & literally the most healthy thing for U to do for Ur child. I breast fed my son until he was 2yrs old. He rarely gets sick. Has never had a ear infection, & I built a bond with him that will last a lifetime. He is now 14 & he has grown into the most amazing young man. Bonding is very important for children. If some women want to bond a little longer that's their choice. No one else's!! I would rather see a Mom paying attention to her children then ignoring them & caring only about their self. This Mom is amazing. Cooking a healthy dinner, while breast feeding isn't easy. Kudios to her!!!
The official age that health professionals recommend to breast feed until is 3, so...
This is true love, not addiction! Every family is free to decide how long breastfeeding will go on and nobody has the right to judge!
Mom is using a sharp knife very close to young child. Older child is sitting crossed leg on top of counter will pot on stove. Top if off the child has some sort of live animal my guess a Guinea pig beside all the fresh food and veggies on the counter near the boiling water. Breastfeeding is the lest of this mothers issues. Wow
Please go shame ppl that deserve it. Not a woman doing what she can/wants for her fam. Shame !!!
Load More Replies...So beautiful picture. And so natural. Who think that this picture is ugly is very ugly in your mind and heart.
I don't think they think it is ugly just maybe just a little over board.
Load More Replies...Not disgusted by the breastfeeding, just creeped out that a middle schooler is still nursing.
Load More Replies...They're able to ask for mum's breast from their very first day ;)
Everyone is arguing over this woman breastfeeding the child and having a knife too close for comfort. The post is about what mothers day is like in the real world. I'm sure most of your mom's have told you to not say anything at all if you do not have anything nice to say. That's for good reason. Your opinions are not going to change the minds of anyone. They will, however, create animosity. I think we can all agree that this woman is doing HER best for her children. Also, I doubt the knife has a mind of it's own...
Is anyone going to comment on how old that kid is? He is practically a teenager.... a bit creepy
What I don't understand is why people wean their children and then turn around and give them another species milk! If you are weaned, you are weaned, period! No one needs milk of any kind after the age of being weaned. This is a myth created by the dairy industry to brainwash us into thinking we need milk for the rest of our lives...we don't!
Beautiful! Is the older boy holding a guinea pig? Lol my daughter would def do something like that.
I breastfed while sitting on the toilet once because she wasn't waiting!
Why is everyone on here complaining about the breast feeding part??? This was meant to be funny!
Kid on the counter with a guinea pig! Haahahah! Love this photo just so much going on!
the titty boy, the animal on the kitchen counter, she's showing her boob and the knife anything else that people want to complain about? How about the picture being staged?
With the knife so close to reaching hands is pretty unsafe, but I'm guessing it was staged that way to make the point. Probably better to have just taken a few minutes to nurture and gone back to prepping after, but, a mom has to do what a mom has to do, I guess.
Wow, so much anger and hate because of a multitasking mom who decided that it's totally okay to breastfeed your kid after he turned 6 months, or 2 years for that matter. Disappointing that the small percentage of men here are mostly against breastfeeding after a certain age.
seems a little too staged.....when you cook you need room to move .having something holding tight to your boob doesn't seem too comfy and practical, and I'm not even mentioning the age of the child...🤔🤔
I'm more concerned with the other kid having a rodent on the counter with food 🤢
I'm with you. Would you eat at a Restaurant that had rats in it? No! No way is that thing clean no matter how much a family pet it is. Voids all that good food & breast milk..
Load More Replies...I’d go for that now....any offers in the Marquette Michigan area....booby milk while rubbing your panic button 😏
To those who think this little boy is 4. Ummm I think hes just about 2. Let him have breast milk as long as he wants. Keeps him healthy and strong. Oh and by the way it's none of our business.
my ex breast fed two at a time and the oldest of the two used to sasy booby please mommy and she was a girl nothing wrong with that another friend o fmine was still breast feeding her son until he was 6 years old and goignto school thats a bit long but whatever floats your boat
This is ridiculous!! That kids is plenty old enough to be sitting at the table with a regular cup. I'm all for breastfeeding a BABY but that kid is way to old. At this point this is being done to fulfill some sick fetish that his mother has!!!
I'm so sorry I didn't realize my comment would be sent to everyone on this thread
Using a sharp knife right next to the kids leg is pathetic! Kid is also old enough to wait! Sorry this is a very silly photo!
I agree they have to ask for milk then to old personally anyone pass 6 mos. To 1 year is to old that kid looks like he's 3 which old enough to eat his own food and then some my 3 old is already feed him self and potty trained my next question is don't tell the 5, he old waiting to for the other one ??? That's mommy issues not kids
I think this is horrible. That child is way too big. Its more for the mother when it gets to this!
That child is to old to be sucking on mom's boob. Pump your breast milk & give it to him in a cup
For starters, why are we using a butcher knife while the child is right there on the counter to breastfeed? Also, why is this mother breasfeeding this child at this age still anyway when he can be eating what she is dicing!?
If your child is old enough to unhook your bra, it might be time to stop breastfeeding. -Jeff Foxworthy-
I am more concerned that the second child is sitting on a food prep area with his bare foot on the table and with an animal in his lap 🤮
Too old to be breast feed, thats why when the grow up they have trouble being independent.
That is the most ignorant statement I have ever read!
Load More Replies...Ok. I get the point but not safe or sanitary to have children sitting on the counter while cooking or prepping food
Using a knife when a kid sits on the counter top? I would freak out. One false move.
That kid is way too old to still be breastfeeding. At this point, this is more about Mom than the kid.
That is total insanity. How can any mother be so dumb as to have a child that close to a butcher knife while cutting anything? I realize it's probably a posed picture where she is actually not cutting anything but one wrong move & she would have a major medical emergency.
Does the other kid sitting on the counter have a guinea pig in his lap while the mom is making dinner?! That’s so gross. ...sorry I’m a germaphobe.🤢
It's to old when theyan remember beautiful otherwise tho ... It'll be wrong when a kid says one day " hey Mom remember that day when we were making cookies and I was sucking your boob ya no
All these people talking about how the kid's too old to be nursing (which I agree with) yet I don't see anybody commenting on the fact that the other kid is holding a guinea pig that close to food when those things poop everywhere. Yuck.
Yes very true its not easy to be a mother.. I feed my 3yrs old baby anywer anytime..
God gave us TEETH for a reason. No other mammal breast feeds past early age. Humans just enjoy it more. Ridiculous.
No other animal drinks the milk of another species into adulthood either. S'oppose you'd better give up your ice cream and cheese...
Load More Replies...I'm all for natural, think it's great for everyone involved ... but there is a point when the kid's too old.
And you are way too old to say "tits" without sounding like exactly that.
Load More Replies...You know what’s gross and ugly? Men with comments like this.
Load More Replies...Who died and made you the breast feeding police? Like she said baby isn't even 2 yet and to be quite honest, unless that child is feeding from your breast, it has f**k all to do with you and you aren't entitled to make that judgment or decision. ...oh, and no one asked you.
Load More Replies...We have breasts to feed our babies , not playthings for men! Ever see a bull suck a cow's tot for foreplay ? No because it's only real use is for a baby not some man's fantasy!
Load More Replies...Looks about 2 ... but it doesn't matter ... not your kid
Load More Replies...thanks for your concerns :) baby is not even 2 years old... btw my own kid is 3 and still breastfeeds at night and I don't see anything wrong with that. have a blessed day !

Motherhood Is Not Being Able To Call In Sick
Motherhood Is Being A Nurse Or Wiping Kids' Noses With Your Shirt
Motherhood Is Having No Privacy
Honestly, all of these will be misses for the while i have kids but i can't wait... i want children even more now! i love this post!
Motherhood Is Having Little Helpers To Help You Cook
'Uh..oh..don't do that, go away, watch tv or something' there, that's more like my mom..she is such a good cook but so perfectionist that she didn't allow me to help when i was little..
Motherhood Is Being A Housekeeper
My mum taught us to pick up after ourselves, even at that age - otherwise we'd feel the wrath of dad. And once she had cleaned it was expected to stay that way - as she put it .... "you can play, but we're not pigs so we will not live like pigs" The same with closing doors to keep the heat in "were you born in a barn...no...then shut the door" (never understood the barn. But I always shut the door)
Motherhood Is Trying Not To Lose Your Mind
kids need rules and boundries ofc.. but you also need patience and let your kids be kids.
Motherhood Is Being A Maid
For a lot of reasons, saying that Mom is a maid really raises my hackles. We all do a lot of things for our kids. I don't know, but when it gets said like that it's almost like an expectation or a task. I willingly did all those things when the kids were little, but I wasn't a maid! Not for my own kids.
Motherhood Is Breastfeeding On Demand
I love this mom. She doesn't sweat the small things, and looks to allow her children to be little and enjoy life.
Motherhood Is Never Shopping Alone
Two under control , now try to see what the third one is trying to do.
thanks for your concerns :) baby is not even 2 years old... btw my own kid is 3 and still breastfeeds at night and I don't see anything wrong with that. have a blessed day !
Load More Replies...I'm thinking abt that too :( And I'm not old enough to not have the 'you will one day want kids' reply every.single.time
Load More Replies...Seeing photos like this just reassures me that I've made the right decision to never have children. I don't like mess, I want to sleep when I want, do what I want - when I want, I need my alone time (I suffer from anxiety), I can't stand noise I can't get away from (gives me a headache). And I want to work outside of my home, and not put my career on hold. Not saying I don't have huge respect for mothers out there, I'm just not made to be one.
It takes a person who knows themselves inside and out to realize they are not the mother type. Nothing wrong with that. What's wrong is having kids cuz everyone is buggin you to do it. Then you are unhappy, the kids miserable and life sucks.
Load More Replies...Pretty much.. It's no glorious life with couple of young children.. No social life, to tired to function and body & mind left right after the dead beat dad.. I made it through, but it sums up the mess you become when dealing with the madness a couple of small children are.. Never again!
Being a mother without any help is a tougher job anyone can ever imagine unless you are one. There are lot more than these pictures show. In Asia, it is much worse. Sad part is that no one appreciates while the mother is doing all these without a hum. This will never change. No wonder most girls prefer not to have children unless you are forced to.
I love that almost all of the mums look really calm and loving with their children.
Ok, here's the thing. Everyone only looks at the worst of childhood. Like seriously, kids don't just skip from being a toddler to an adult. Kids can be ok at some point.
AS I understand the idea of the project, I still have concerns about showing naked children on the Internet. You don't know who can watch those and the thought that some pedophile can be jerking off to those right now is repulsive. Besides, I as a grown up wouldn't like to know that my butt, even when I was 2 or 3 at the time was shown to unlimited amount of people. I also take pics of my kiddo, but I respect their privacy. If she will want to share her children pics, she will do herself when grown up.
I find it disturbing too. Bored Panda even once had the guts to devote a whole post to nude children doing summer things... They said it was for them to get closer to nature but for me, call me a prude, it was just pedophilia abound...
Load More Replies...Ah, good old boredPanda- I replied to one comment, and it glitched my reply to every damn comment on the page...
Thank you for this post! I have 2 under 5 and a third on the way, and I couldn't relate more to the pics: it's hard, it's insane, it makes me question myself a lot - and yet it's the most wonderful thing I'll ever get to experience and I'm thankful for it every day. (And good to see the sensible responses to the anti-breastfeeding comment too.)
This whole post is so accurate. Especially the bathroom and shower pictures in my case.
It’s really not like this at all, there are days sure, but with everything else in the world good comes with bad. I’m on my 4th child and I work full time away from the home, none of my kids have ever seen a day care either as my husband and I work separate seasons. I couldn’t be happier.
Curious, why did you decide to have four? Will you have more?
Load More Replies...Mom of four here. Kids are now 14-20 years old. We had our trials and fun times. I don't remember much of their childhood as I was doing my best to survive with 4 under 5... however, the kids remember all the cool things we did, all the park visits, all the fun meals I made for them, the crafts we did, the messes we made together. I look back now and know that survival mode may have been all I could muster, but to them, it was so much more.
I am definitely not ready for kids. What you do is amazing but I couldn’t do that yet
Such a beautiful thing. Even with all these adversities, they find on love the strength to keep on going. That's the most important job there is!
just think though when your old they can do same for you if your raise them right. i took care of my 90+mom with Alzheimer's but only had real bad time the last 3 she avoided the dreadful nursing homes which i dealt with in my job as a lab courier. unfortunately her 1 yr younger sister had no kids spent several years in home. we could not visit she in pa us in fl and mom could not travel and i could not leave her alone unfortunately i never made connection so no kids men get the feelings and dreads too but too bad leftists dont seem to value mothers one of the most important joe from creation/evolution i believe both god used evolution
i agree 100% but single dads have the same problems except for breastfeeding which i have no problem with
I agree with most of the above stated comments. I never wanted to have children and have no feelings one way or the other to those who do. Rarely do parents regard me with the same respect.
No one should have children if they do not want to...but do not be so definite anymore, if your parents thought the same as you ... you would not have existed today. We do not have to judge each other, parents will always say what a great thing is to have children and those who do not want children will always say what a great thing is to be free...we all live the lifes we choose to live...
Even in smiling photos, all the moms seem to intentionally present motherhood as so miserable and hard. I think it may be because they have nothing else going on in life and want to be seen as heroes who do so much hard work and deserve society’s praise. It’s sad. They don’t realize they are just making it look like they’ve made bad decisions. I don’t think I want kids but if I do decide to have a child, I would do it completely opposite from these people who claim they never get a moment alone and can’t clean or lose weight. That’s b******t. Yes you can, lots of moms do. But they don’t go on the internet looking for attention.
