Ah, statistics. In high school, that was one of the most dreaded classes everyone tried hard to avoid. Despite how useful the course was, it just didn’t appeal to our picky teenage taste. Thankfully, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to really appreciate statistics for how much they teach us about our world. Clearly, I’m not alone either.

Earlier this week, Reddit user Foundation_james reached out asking for the most interesting statistics people know, and the post received thousands of responses. We’ve gathered some of the most fascinating statistics people shared, so you can read them below and add them to your list of go-to fun facts. Be sure to upvote all of your favorite stats, and then if you’re looking to learn even more from Bored Panda, we recommend checking out this piece next.

Chuck Norris would be the fastest but we do not have the technology to record the speeds he runs at.

Statistics are more prevalent in our day to day lives than many of us even realize. Every time we check the weather before deciding what to wear in the morning, we’re relying on statistics. When our insurance company informs us of the rates we’re going to be charged, they’ve determined those numbers based on stats of all the drivers and homeowners in our area. When a friend offers us a cigarette at a party, we may politely decline because it’s hard to ignore the statistics about cancer rates linked to smoking.

The field of statistics is the science of learning from data, and without an understanding of it, we would have a very difficult time making decisions. When preparing for emergencies, for example, we can assess the risks based on statistics. How often do hurricanes occur in this area? How likely is one to occur within the next week? When a hurricane does hit, how devastating is it expected to be? The National Hurricane Center uses various statistical models "based on historical relationships between hurricane-specific information, such as the location and time of year, and the behavior of historical hurricanes" to predict future storms. These stats are incredibly important in keeping citizens safe and minimizing destruction from hurricanes.

True. I have not heard of any of these people who supposedly always carry a gun take down a shooter. I have heard of people fatally shooting others over neighbour disputes because "I fElT tHrEaTeNeD" when only one person had a gun on them. That incident over a birthday party still disturbs me.

And hundreds more will occur if they don't tighten their gun laws. First step make any automatic and semi automatic guns illegal, second have a gun buy back program, thirdly have laws where you can't carry weapons on you and have to be locked up. Have tougher screening rules on who can own a weapon and lastly have better healthcare so people can access mental health services easier. That's just the start. It can be and has been done. No excuses.

I saw a video recently of a, I think it was a 13 year old, who went undercover. He tried and failed to buy lottery tickets, scratchcards, cigarettes, and booze, then he tried to buy a rifle and succeeded. Shows the state of things when kids can't buy a scratchcard but can buy a lethal weapon.

Saw Andy Murray on TV (the tennis guy) He survived Scotland's only mass shooting, also only school shooting, when he was 8 years old (Dunblane) He said - how do they expect things to get better by constantly doing the same thing again - ie more guns. He also commented on how strange 'active shooter drills' were and how weird it was that they are normalised..

There have been more gun deaths in American schools in the last 16 years than there have been in European schools since 1903. (Europe has more than double the population.) 'Guns don't kill people. People kill people.' Yes, but it's a great deal easier to kill people if you have easy access to guns.

Our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has just put forth a bill that will put an end to anymore handguns in Canada. No sale, transfer, import. We already had a ban on assault type rifles after a mass shooting at a women's university a number of decades ago. The comedian, Eddie Izzard made a brilliant point years ago to the argument of "Guns don't kill people. People kill people" the bracket on this is mine. He said "Well, that's very true. But if you have a gun (assault rifle) in your hands, it helps". Gun nuts think it's OK to have to basically turn schools into the equivalent of the Green Zone in Baghdad. Don't sell them. There is no need to form a controlled militia to defend the US. The British are not coming.

Parts of the US are so deep into gun culture it’s basically part of their religion. In fact, I’m positive this would be the claim they make if any restrictions began to happen. It’s really difficult when the politicians in those areas are all pro-gun, too. That really only leaves federal intervention and they just keep kicking it back to the states to handle. I lived in one of these states once. I remember during a dental procedure, my dentist, who was also a high-up in the church, talked to the tech non-stop about this new Glock he just bought. Average folks would go shopping armed to the teeth for some ridiculous reason. Those open carry guns are legally required to be unloaded, but I don’t trust that for a second. Anyway, guns are so ingrained in these people’s lives that many are willing to kill to keep it that way. I think we should be more focused on purchase restrictions and ammo regulations. I believe that would drastically decrease the preventable deaths and shooting incidents

Wait what? I'm an American & I didn't know there's been that many. THATS HOW F*****G DESENSITIZED WE ARE BECOMING... I didn't even know this. This makes me f*****g sick. I was almost kidnapped in New Orleans as an adult woman & after that I'm like "I'm getting a gun" f**k this! I'm terrified! the very next day there was a shooting down the street where a child was struck & killed right in front of the hospital in Nola & I'm like "I understand why ppl want guns... but most of the ppl who have guns have never even needed them or been in a situation where they would help... meanwhile babies are literally dying all because oNe DaY ThEy MiGhT nEeD tO PrOtEcT ThEmSeLvEs!" I did not get a gun. I upgraded my security system. I never leave my house without my dog even to put the trash out & I carry a knife, a super bright flashlight that basically makes ppl puke if shined in their eyes & a really loud alarm. F**K guns.

Yep, sure, they make the door lockable on the inside... if it is all timed wrongly then the shooter can make very good use of that lock and keep anyone trying to stop them out. NOT the answer any more than active shooter drills that didn't save those children.

guns are a tool, just like a lot of other tools it's the person using it that is the problem. Most folks die each year by illegal guns, They also are killed with knives, cars, fists, rocks, and being pushed off a high places, etc. stop blaming the tool. take away legal guns and what's left? a lot of criminals with illegal guns and victims just saying

Most gun deaths in the US is caused by legal guns. No one is saying to take guns away, just have better gun laws. A knife, fist or rock are not comparable to guns because you need close range meaning more time to get away. Same as being pushed off high places. Guns on the other hand can shoot from a distance and some guns can shoot multiple rounds within seconds. A car is also not the same coz where most of these mass shootings take place, a car can't access. You are more likely to be killed by your own gun than you would use it for self defence.

Maybe you should be a bit more honest about this statistic. "Mass shooting" is any shooting of three people or more, and can include shootings that occur NEAR or ON school grounds even if school is not in session. This statistic also takes into account gang violence, etc. Check out the database at https://www.theviolenceproject.org/mass-shooter-database/ for the most comprehensive database I have seen and you can filter by location, shooter info, guns legally purchased, etc.

I like how gun enthusiasts hide behind the second amendment when you know damn well what the intent was. Don’t twist it to your will. “Being necessary for the security of a free state”. It is no longer necessary. We have a national military now, along with national guards stationed in each state. And there is NO reason for military grade weapons to be for sale to the public. No justification, no situation would ever require that. As for other guns, stricter controls need to be in place. For crying out loud you need licenses to hunt or fish! Is a deer’s life is more important than a person’s? A child’s? As for the mental health - hey guess what? You can do two things at once. Shocking! Work on both problems at once. Guess that might be asking too much from our government.

Gun control will lead to control from our far left leaders. They have been trying for decades to take away guns. If you want to compare the 2nd to modern times you need to compare the 1st as well freedom of speech did not included computers, tv, radios, etc. but yet we fight to keep free speech on these platforms. The 2nd was to defend ourselves from a tyrannical government. The far left is working at taking all your rights away. Morning Joe show, 1 of many, has said more than once it is THEIR job to tell us how to think They are not even hiding it anymore.

Arbitrarily declaring that a school mass shooting needs to kill at least four people to “count” as a mass shooting doesn’t bring back from the dead the kids who were killed by guns at school in incidents that don’t fall within that criteria (like the mass shooting at my high school that “only” killed three people, including a 14-year-old). It also doesn’t change the fact that more kids are killed by guns in schools in the US than anywhere else. The libertarians at Reason can get bent.

Many of the very same Hollywood elite who say we should outlaw guns are the same ones directing, producing, & acting in movies & shows that glorify gun violence. Many other nations don't have so much violence violence portrayed in their cinemas. If we got rid of guns, the violence would not get any less. Other tools will be used.

I live in the US. I have guns. No one is going to take my guns from me. HOWEVER, I don't think that it's just that there are guns available to these people. Think about it. 100 years ago there were (per capita) more guns available to people/kids, and they didn't go around shooting each other like people do now. Something is broken in our society. Somehow we have all become so angry and so butt hurt that we feel we need to go around shooting random people. I'm not going to argue that if the guns weren't there people couldn't shoot each other but at this point it would be ridiculous to believe they can be controlled. We need to figure out WHY we are shooting each other and fix THAT if we want this to come to an end quicker than trying to recall all the guns in the country - which will never be possible.

The countries you are comparing to America were ALMOST ALL conquered by Nazis or Communists. Then 100 MILLION people became lethally UNsafe and were butchered. Governments out of control have killed 1000 times more people in just this century alone than by all the criminals in the entire world since time began. Criminals can kill only one or a few at a time, but governments kill entire cities and even NATIONS, ocean liners full of people, entire schools and every child in the schools. It was governments, not gun owners, that firebombed Dresden in retaliation for the mass destruction of the entire city of Canterbury. It was governments that sank the Lusitania. Governments murder people by the thousands in each single strike. It's easy to do because they first disarm the population to make people "safe." There have been 288 mass shootings in schools since 2009, killing 169 people. Estimates (Wiki) of Defensive Gun Use to STOP crimes run between 55 thousand to 4.5 MILLION per year.

1) Enforce the gun laws on the books, many DAs and counties, even in tougher gun law states, don't follow through. 2) National database for criminal records and mental health. Period. No arguments, you folks at NRA. 3) Schools, the most common place for shootings, should never be unlocked from the outside without supervision. 4)More gun safety and education required to own a gun, just like you have to drive a car. 5.) Educate all Americans on the reason we have a second amendment. (No, not in case America is attacked, but so the federal government cannot enter a sovreign state and take property or lives by force. We are the only country in the world where the people can protect themselves from their own government 6) You put the genie back in the bottle. Guns are here to stay.Criminals will NOT give up their guns. 7) Address the causes of school and mass shootings, mental health, bullying, abuse, impulse control, etc. And know this, no matter what we do. Crazy people will find a way.

This is false, there have been more shootings but far less “mass” shootings. Statisticians even include shootings occurring outside school property during which a bullet passed into school property as a “school shooting”. People can manipulate statements to make it seem different than reality, we need to read between the lines and do our own research.

If a bullet is fired into school property, it IS a school shooting, no need for quotation marks. It is a significant event for a gun to be fired anywhere near a damn school, and you trying to somehow mitigate or downplay the numbers is a feeble attempt to dismiss the fact that we have a massive problem with gun violence in this country.

That's a lie. There may have been 288 school shootings (if you're not lying about that, too), but you messed up by adding the word "mass." What's more, you left off the part that MORE students would be dead but for the guys/gals that showed up WITH GUNS!

Kind of missing the point by nitpicking on details. Lets fix this for you. *Mass* school shootings (defined as 4 or more deaths) - Total deaths in United States = 281, all other democracies combined = 173. Closest runner up is Brazil & at 35 deaths. Considering that America has less than double Brazil's population, having eight times the deaths isn't a good thing.

This is an internet rumor. There have been 13 mass shootings in US schools since 1968. Education Week, which tracks all school shootings, defines them as incidents in which a person other than the suspect suffers a bullet wound on school property. All the other incidences falsely reported by NPR included hootings involved disputes between students in parking lots, or after athletic events, and all of them resulted in one or zero deaths. Uvalade was a mass shooting tragedy.

I feel like you're downplaying the role of guns in violent crimes, which directly affect the children in this country. Let me share this statistic: "The U.S. has had 2,032 school shootings since 1970 and these numbers are increasing. Alarmingly, 948 school shootings have taken place since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012". I think any sane person can agree that, no matter who is involved in the shooting, nor how many are shot in one incidence, gun violence is a horrific problem in this country. A problem which our government seems happy to allow to continue.

Statistics also play a huge role in political campaigns. We can predict the outcome of elections by using data about an area from past elections and by polling individuals during a campaign to see where they are leaning. Politicians running for office use this data to decide where to focus their energy as well. If a county has voted Republican in every presidential election for the past 20 years, they are likely to vote the same way in the future, regardless of how many rallies are held there.

Statistics have also been incredibly important to governments in combating the Covid-19 pandemic. Decisions about lockdowns, restrictions, mask mandates and vaccine requirements have all been made based on illness and death rates over time. It would have been very difficult for governments to determine a course of action in fighting Covid without proof of how it’s spreading and where.

Statistics also benefit us when we’re doing our weekly grocery shop. Stores use the data they collect on what products are being purchased the most frequently to decide how much to order. This is particularly important for items that become more popular in specific seasons, such as sunscreen in the summer months and hot chocolate in the winter. And if you want to determine the best time to go grocery shopping to avoid crowds, the stats will tell you to go on Mondays and Tuesdays. Skip shopping on Saturdays and Sundays, especially between 11am-12pm, as shoppers spend an average of 7 more minutes in stores on weekends due to crowds.

Statistics can also be exciting when learning about topics we’re passionate about, like sports. Data analytics have become extremely important in the world of professional sports for team strategies and for the enjoyment of fans. It wasn’t until 2002, however, that sports analytics really started to take off. The catalyst was Billy Beane, who was general manager of the Oakland Athletics at the time, using statistical analysis to curate a powerful team of lesser-known baseball players. After the Athletics almost won the World Series, Beane’s strategy, which came to be known as “Moneyball”, quickly became the norm for other teams as well and even inspired a 2011 film starring Brad Pitt.

According to a report from Research and Markets, the global sports analytics industry is expected to reach $3.4 billion by 2028. Part of the reason for this is the speed at which analytics technology has evolved. Companies like Genius Sports, for example, are able to “generate statistical breakdowns from video footage to help coaches optimize their play calling during games or generate post-game takeaways”. Cameras are also used by many  companies to track player movement, ball speeds and more. But it’s not only the teams who benefit from this data. Fans use these statistics to create their fantasy league teams and place bets on who will win games.

No matter what your favorite sport is, I’m sure you can find a high-tech analytics company that’s pumping out fascinating data about your favorite athletes. For example, Trace in Austin, Texas, uses recording gear and an AI system to analyze film from soccer games, so coaches and players don’t have to. Players wear tracking devices that record their games, and an AI bot stitches together clips of all of the most important moments. Trace also notes performance metrics including minutes played, distance ran, top speed, max efforts, and stamina, and creates a heat map tracking where players spent most of their time during a game. Technology like this saves coaches time and helps them create more effective strategies for future games.

When it comes to statistical analysis, there are 7 key types: descriptive, inferential, predictive, prescriptive, exploratory, causal and mechanistic. Each type serves a slightly different purpose, but they all help the world go round. Descriptive statistics, for example, deal with “organizing and summarizing data using numbers and graphs”. Using visual aids like graphs and tables is an efficient way to convey information because it's more palatable for the general population. These are often used in news articles to simplify complex data. As the name suggests, inferential statistics allow us to infer generalizations about data and “make conclusions with respect to future outcomes” by testing hypotheses. This method often uses the sampling theory, various tests of significance and statistical control.

Predictive analysis is also pretty self-explanatory, as it is used to make predictions about future events based on “current and past facts and figures". We rely on predictive analysis for weather forecasts, and many businesses including marketing companies, insurance companies, financial corporations and online service providers use predictive analysis to gain competitive advantages. Conversely, prescriptive analysis uses data to determine the best reaction to a situation. It relies on several techniques including simulation, graph analysis, algorithms, complex event processing and more.

Exploratory analysis is generally “the first step of the data analysis process that is conducted prior to any other statistical analysis techniques”. It is not the sole method for predicting or drawing conclusions, but it provides a preview of data and can give valuable insight. Causal analysis is used to understand the reason behind why events occur. For example, it can be used by businesses to trace what went wrong in a failed experiment or by IT companies to check the quality assurance of their software. Lastly, mechanistic analysis is the least common type and is used to “understand the definite changes that could make changes in other variables”. For example, it is used in biological sciences "when studying and inspecting how various parts of the virus are affected by making changes in medicine".
