Incredible 30-Day Journey Of A Cargo Ship In A Timelapse Shows What Most Of Us Will Never See In Our Lifetimes
Ever dreamed about a life at sea? Many of us have dreamed of leaving it all behind, heading off to live the romantic life of exploration and adventure that only sailing the vast, open oceans can bring.
Alas, for most people the life of a sailor remains just that, a dream. Luckily for us dreamers we have people like Jeffrey Tsang, a Canadian maritime vlogger, sailor and photographer on a container ship that travels across the globe.
He describes his latest video as “30 Days of Timelapse, about 80,000 photos combined. Sailing in the open ocean is a unique feeling and experience, and I hope to capture it for everyone to see.”
The Timelapse takes us on a journey from the Red Sea, across the Indian Ocean to Hong Kong, via the ports of Colombo and Singapore. The views are simply stunning. “Chasing the endless horizon, witnessing the ever changing weather, and appreciating the bright stars and galaxies.” Is how Jeffrey describes his life on the high seas. There are glimpses of the Milky Way and Jupiter in the endlessly vast night skies, stunning sunrises and ferocious lightning storms, as well as shots of the mega tetris game played out at port, as the huge ship is unloaded and reloaded for the next leg of the journey. The incredible scenes are all captured by Jeffrey’s Nikon D750 camera and use a massive 1.5 terabytes of data, we think you will agree that the result is very much more than worth it.
Watch the mesmerizing video on full screen for an immersive experience, and live out your dreams as the sailor you never were.

Share on FacebookThe ocean is a beautiful and fascinating lady. I have enjoyed my trips on the Atlantic and Pacific as a young lad, traveling to Dad's assignments in Japan and Germany. But I am constantly aware that this lady is capable of being a raging B***h, capable of ruining far more than one's day. And now that I know a great deal about "Rogue Waves" I am even more fearful of embracing this lady in my future. I think I will be flying from now on. :(
I did not expect to watch the whole video. Really cool! I felt like it was a kid playing with the toy because of the time lapse. Want to see more!
Beautifully done. Enjoyed the justaposition of the mundane and boring transport of shipping containers with the beauty of the ever living environment and the sea.
cat approved !!! I like the way camera stay there and didn't change angle, the text awesome.
Do cargo ships ever take passengers? I can't see the night sky where I live now,and would love to see it once more before I die
Yes, there are a few travel companies that can organise a trip on a container ship I did one from Melbourne to Savannah via the Panama canal.
Load More Replies...Absolutely amazing photography! Thank you for sharing this experience for us landlubbers! Beautiful!
Just beautiful, almost meditative. Would love to see more videos like this also loved the music, so perfect!
Wow, I love this!! Please do more. I love the day/night changes, the clouds are amazing! Just beautiful!
Wow. I didn't realize there was so much traffic. Good job avoiding them all. Great video. Didn't get sea sick once.
Golly Miss Molly those STARS! Very interesting video, thanks so much for sharing!!
Qué envidia!!! Muchas gracias por este regalo. Desde que era muy joven quise navegar así. Ojalá pueda hacer realidad mi sueño
This video is absolutely freakin' AMAZING!!!!! I would LOVE to see one going through Panama Canal! Keep up the awesome camera work!!!
The night photography brought back memories of my time at sea while in the US Navy. You need the near total darkness of ship underway at night with basically only its running lights on to appreciate the beauty of the night sky.
I could imagine this video as background visual in bar or something with good music of course.... i would love to see more
I couldn't get it to work. Could only hear the music. However, I found the original on youtube and, bonus, was able to play it at 25%. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHrCI9eSJGQ
thanks so much for sharing, great insight into the weather and fantastic views on board
I very much enjoyed this video. Something definitely different! The background music was pleasing as well. I'm guessing Jeffery is a merchant marine. Thank you for sharing.
Enjoyed your travels and the beautiful skies and scenery. Thanks for sharing!
a great insight into crossing the seas and the majesty of nature too.
I loved the video. So beautiful and serene, even the storms. I'm actually more relaxed.
WOW WOW WOW, if I could fly I would be flying across the top of the oceans like that, it was mesmerizing, thank you so much. A wonderful experience to film and share.
This is one of the most fascinating videos I've ever watched on BP. I was especially impressed with the changes in the sky, the views of the stars, and because of the speed of the video, the curvature of the earth. Just amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this. It's something I would never otherwise get to see.
Most enjoyable. Some of the blue hues were absolutely magnificent. Room for anyone else? Be happy to stand watch.
Wow, who knew the night sky could look like this. So many stars! Beautiful and real treat. Makes me appreciate commercial shipping industry so much more too.
Just fantastic. One of those sunrises brought me to tears. Excellent soundtrack, as well. Thank you!
I had numerous fare share of tjis experience. I had voyage from Denmark with a wind mill blades on deck and bound for Australia passing the Panama Canal was a huge experience. 2nd I remembeted was doing tha trip from Argentina gping south Magellan Strait then to Equador, Peru, Chile and then back to Atgentina passsing Panama Cana. Om the other hand was a trip from Itally to China paddong the Somalian waters and the Malacca Strait, Singapore strait up to the China waters and then China to Sabetta North of Russia with midst of Arctic and Antartic Ocean.
Wonderful, awesome and beautiful! Thank you for sharing this insight, safe travels.
Wonderful video . I really enjoyed the insight into the what’s involved in transporting goods far and wide. Like others the enormity if the ship and the number of containers is just awesome. Thank you for sharing. Stay safe!
I loved this video!!!! Wow ! Thank you for sharing. You are a "Peach " I used to do sail races in the 80's . There's nothing more calming than the ocean when it's peaceful or exciting when it's raging!
Like watching paint dry. Be nice to know about the cargo. Costs. number of people on board. Otherwise not too interesting to this landlubber.
So you said you were on the 4-8 shift. How do you spend your time the other 16 hours when you are at sea?
Excellent......only missing the slow drudgery of daily sea life.
Wonderful. I would so love to experience this in person. Thank you for allowing me to see it!
Best video i have ever seen! Amazing! I usually have no patience watching these videos but i was tranfixed! Well done! Loved it!
Beautiful! Thank you for the extra work of catching it all on camera for the rest of us.
can you share the setting in timelapse and taking a milky way during travel in a ship
can you share the setting about taking long expo in milky way during in a ship ?
What a visually stunning experience! Combined with the music, it reminds me of the hypnotic parts of Koyaanisqatsi. Please keep making films like this.
An amazing video which widened my horizons! Thank you so much for making this video and sharing it with us. ;) Please, make more videos on your journeys and show some places that you visit, too. Your work is very important and requires a lot of patience, too.
Wow, amazing! Love the changes from night to day and from open seas to port. Please make more! Would love to see other seas; the Roaring Forties, the open Pacific, etc. but don't expect you to transfer routes to make time lapse films (although that would be so cool). Thanks for the dedication to film this daily!
surprised you escaped any heavy weather . lol . since i spent most of my time at sea in an engine room i found this video very nice . i'd love to see more .
Beautiful. Back in ancient days I had the 4-8 watch on a trip from San Francisco-Yokahama-Manila to Da Nang. It was a smaller ship and from the bow I could watch the enormous spouts of bioluminescence spraying into the air. Thank you for letting me back onto the ocean again.
Very interesting! I am SO glad I watched it! Thank you for making it. I look forward to more of them!
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing your rare perspective. Looking forward to more of these ocean travel scenery visuals. Amazing.
Brilliant mate. As a Master Mariner and ships Captain you stirred some fond memories from my data bank. Wish i had you foresight to capture them, but love your work. Cheers, John.
As a retired Great Lakes Merchant Seaman I love this! Miss the Big Water. peter-reis...73fba6.jpg
The night sky and depth of the stars... breathtaking. Thank you so much for sharing this, to be able to experience this yourself is a true gift!
That was fantastic especially the night sky's with so many stars which we don't see because of light pollution.
Beautiful video. My son is studying at SUNY Maritime so it's interesting to see what he will be experiencing.
Loved every minute of it - thank you so much for producing this video.
Nicely done! It sure brings back many memories of past voyages. In the future, if possible, film more of the choke points ( i.e. Gibraltar, Suez Canal, Panama Canal, the English Channel), and more of the major ports ( Yokohama, LA, etc.). People just don't understand how much traffic there is to deal with. Thanks for the berth. Capt. M. E. Phillips, USMM (Ret.)
Beautiful , I have looked into cargo ships as a means of personal transport to Northern Europe from the US. Some had really nice accommodations Price was about the same as flying hate fling , to crowded to rush rush , but I am retired no hurrys and what an experience to be on the open sea . I'm looking forward to the trip. You made my day.
Awesome! You know how you can improve this even more? Add a simple graphic map in a corner showing the route in real time.
The perfect combination of speed and steady to make for a very relaxing video. Awesome!
Wonderful video. In one scene I could see that you were at about 8 deg. north latitude. Stars must have been beautiful at night.
Fantastic!! Thank you for having sharing. You are blessed with a marvelous creativity. Keep it coming!
Thank you for sharing this small part of your life. I envy you your travels - and adventures !
MOST groovy sah- thanks for helping me (vicariously) with the bucket list thang. Have planned my 'great sea escape' for years- alas... ain't gonna happen. Just curious- what musics do you listen to out there? Peace/regards.
MOST groovy, sah! Thanks you very much- fires the imagination, and helps (vicariously) with the bucket list thing. Just curious- what musics do you listen to out there?
Wow - that was beautiful. I like the flow, the music choice and I appreciate your notes and comments. :-) I'd like to see more. Thanks!
Very moving...the first capture of the night sky had me in tears. Thank you for sharing this with all of us!
Enjoyed the video very much. Have been to the ocean but never on it. Would love to see what it is like in a storm when hitting waves.
outstanding! I can honestly say I feel as if I sailed on a cargo ship on the mighty sea! Thank you for making this available!
This is so beautiful! What a great way to appreciate the size of our planet. I want to get on a ship and make more of these! What an inspiration!
That compression of the video shared is TERRIBLE! Watch his original video on his youtube channel, so much better, esp in 4k!! Incredible stuff... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHrCI9eSJGQ
Thy merchants chase the morning down the sea, Their topmasts gilt by sunset, Though their sails be whipped to rags. Who race the wind around the world Come reeling home again. With ivory, apes, and peacocks loaded, Memories and brags. To sell for this high profit: Knowing fully they are men.
I thought it was gonna be boring for a whole 10 mins but damn I got hooked especially with the amazing background music. Well done!
absolutely stunning thank you so much for sharing this i was mesmorized!! :-)
Seriously the coolest video I've seen in a while. Thank you so much for that glimpse of life at sea. Fascinating!
I loved this! The ever changing sky was enchanting and mesmerising. For some reason I began to feel this could easily lull me to sleep.
So very beautiful. My grandmother traveled around the world on a freighter in the 60's when she was in her mid 70's and I've always thought about doing that myself. Maybe I'll get serious about it now. I'm so glad my DIL sent this for me to watch.
Awesome. Makes me want to hop on a cargo ship for a ride across the ocean.
Thank you for this beautiful video. I am retired from an industry that used container cargo shipping! Just amazing! Thank you, again!
Brings back a lot of memories! Truly enjoyed it. I rode the seas for 21 years.
Absolutely amazing video! Loved it the music is perfect, I would love to have this playing all day on my TV !
Very beautiful !!! Loved it. Very calm sea's, you must stay very close to the shore line, even so I never noticed much for waves... Love to see your next production...

Absolutely beautiful, where do I sign up to volunteer on voyage like this? Seriously?
The most captivating timelapse I've ever seen. Infinity captured in 10min to tell us how tiny we are and how huge is the beauty of Life. Thank you for this masterpiece!
Makes you realize how small we are on this planet. Absolutely beautiful!!
The starry nights are beautiful, pity that we can no longer see them, due to the bright lights
It's worthwhile to watch his other videos. They're very informative on what life is like for modern mariners.
Loved it!! wanted to slow it down tho, felt a tad too fast for me, also the text on screen was a little distracting - there was so much I wanted to see!
How about you make your own video then, without any words on the bottom so you don't have to cry and complain about it
