We all know Mother's Day exists, and its purpose is to show appreciation for the love, care and nurturing that our amazing moms give us every single day. But what else do you know about Mother's day? Here are some Mother's Day facts that you can impress mom with this sunday, with thanks to Town and Country.
Mother's Day is on different dates each year: Because Sunday is the most relaxing and stress-free day of the week, it is ideal for Mother's Day. That's why it is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May, in the USA at least. In the UK Mother's Day falls instead on the Fourth Sunday of Lent, something dating back much longer than the American Mother's Day.
More calls are made on Mother's Day than any other day of the year: For those of us that can't visit mom in person, the very least you can do is to call her. That's why the second Sunday of May always has a huge spike in phone traffic, around 122 million calls are made on this day in the USA.
Mother's Day is the third highest selling holiday for flowers and plants: What is the ideal gift to brighten up your mom's day and show her that you care? Flowers has to be right up there as a safe choice. Around a quarter of all flowers purchased throughout the year are bought for Mother's Day. Only Christmas and Hanukkah, are busier times for your local florist.
Mother's Day is the busiest day of the year for restaurants: It's not only florists that get a big business boost from all this mom love. In 2018, about 87 million adults made plans to go to a restaurant for Mother's Day. Have you made your reservations yet?
The history of American Mother's Day starts with peacemaker Ann Jarvis: During the American Civil War, Ann Jarvis saw a route to peace by creating friendship and community between mothers on both sides of the war. In 1868 she established "Mother's Friendship Day," the beginning of what was to become the modern holiday.
Ann's daughter Anna Reeves Jarvis carried on her mother's legacy by establishing a nationwide observance of Mother's Day in honor of her late mother. The very first Mother's Day was celebrated in 1908, but Reeves Jarvis quickly became disillusioned by the commercial aspect of the holiday. She began starting boycotts, walkouts, and even condemned first lady Eleanor Roosevelt for using the day as a means of fundraising. Reeves Jarvis would eventually use all her money in this fight, and died at the age of 84 in a sanatorium.
Needless to say, commercialization completely dominates the holiday now, much like everything else of emotional value. In 2018, over $23 Billion was spent on Mother's Day, with shoppers spending an average of $180 on gifts for their mothers. A nationwide total of $4.6 billion was spent on jewelry, while $4.4 billion went on dinners or brunches. Want to make a stand for Reeves Jarvis, the founder of today's Mother's Day? Fight back against the rampant consumerism that turns everything meaningful into a marketing opportunity? Cook your mother a nice meal, give her a foot massage, take her for a walk in nature, make her a gift with your hands and creativity. She is guaranteed to love it more than any trinket from the shops!
Well..if there is siblings there will be a bit of variation. "MINE,MINE MINE!" :-D
You could also title this the other way around: "When you meet those people who constantly lectured you on what would change if you had children, and you prove them wrong."
Me: having the Nelson Moons laugh at you, pointing at your face...
Load More Replies...Unless you clearly see abuse there's no specific right way to raise a child back seat parenting from random people isn't helpful its probably just annoying.
Personalities play a part in that too. No two kids are exactly alike, even in the same family. My mother raised 5, two girls and three boys. She said she never had to discipline us girls the way she did those boys.
Load More Replies...I don't have kids nor having them in the future. Also in my 20's and both my parents are dead. Honestly not sure why I'm here? Probably wanted to check out what its like on the other side of the fence. Lol Mother's day/ Fathers Day is depressing but, that's life. I got a cat, he was kind enough to take a giant dump on my floor for Mothers Day.
"Children under two should NEVER have screen time." Yeah, try that when you're pregnant and exhausted and have to find a way to keep your toddler entertained while you pass out for a much-needed cat nap!
Everything is so beautiful and pristine at first...eventually you are flinging pop tarts to kids on bungee cords. lol
Bet you don't smile when you hear non parents say they will never be parents, muhahahha
My sister had so many opinions about raising children. That all went out the window when she had her own - five of them! Love them all!
One of my sisters has no children, but she’s married. One would think she raised six kids with all her “parental” advice.
Worse is when non-parents tell parents they are doing it all wrong. Uh yeah...because YOU are such an expert!
The best part is when they have a child and suddenly do everything they said they wouldn't. (not that I would ever say "I told you so" just sniggering if enough).
I made the mistake of bringing my niece to the dollar store once. I spent $21 things with sparkles... I wanted a gift bag and wrapping paper.
My cousin took her 4 year old son and infant daughter for a stroll around the neighborhood. About halfway into their walk, she realized her son was sucking on a candy. She made him spit it out and asked him where he got it. He said he'd found it on the sidewalk... BLECH!
Just put a foot on it and buy a bit more time 😉 And possibly recycle quite a lot of it.
If we switch the people's roles around then that would be my childhood.
Well, i work with toddlers and let me tell you ; toddlers have their own will en personalities, but parenting is absolutely a big part in how they act. Some people have spoiled brats because they raised them as spoiled brats. No child is perfect, but parenting has a huge stake in your childs behaviour.
As a teenager, I remember doing these from childhood, but I dont think humanity really realizes hiw mich moms (and dads,) do for the world. Thank you moms. 💗
I'm no mom, but I do have a mom, and several siblings. These are pretty funny.
At 16 I raised my 2 cousins, now I'm a step mom all of these are true lol
To all moms out there. Thank you for being the rock your kids can lean on and the superhero that rescues them. I'm not a mom but I have a mom. And I know what I was like as a kid (I was satan incarnate) and she did it all with a smile moms are amazing
Hey, about kids not being able to sleep and coming back umpteenth times, doesn't it help to stay with them for like and hour and read them or something so they know they're not alone? Just asking genuine question.
I have more rest cleaning the kitchen than sitting in living room. But I kind of love the attention because they are in this cute age that they always want to kiss me. My kids make my life great and I love them although is not always easy or enjoyable.
I think there needs to be a meme of those annoying mums that say things like "you just wait till ___ happens." And even when you say it never happened they either don't believe you, or they think it just hasn't happened 'yet'. ugh, so annoying!
Okay,Iḿ not sure about anbody else but theese Memes are Really...REALLY dum- [Guys with threats comes in] WHAT DID YOU SAY? [Me] uhhh okay, im not sure about anbody else but theese memes are Really..REALLY persfect for mothers day! (Happy Mothers Day to all those Hardworking Mothers!)
