Mom Calls Out School For Making Her Daughter Adhere To Misogynistic Dress Codes While They Made Masks ‘Optional’
Life’s a two-way street: if you tell students and their parents that an important (and life-saving) school policy is optional, you shouldn’t be surprised when they apply the same logic to all the other policies in place. Hypocrisy and double standards won’t fly.
A feminist mom from Chattanooga, in Tennessee, called out her daughter’s school for being hypocritical after they declared that the mask mandate would be optional and anyone can opt-out of it. She then contacted the school board to opt out of the school’s official dress code that she finds to be “misogynistic and detrimental to the self-esteem of young women.” Of course, the mom’s main goal here was to highlight the importance of wearing masks and to protest the fact that they were made optional.
The mom’s email quickly went viral on Twitter after being shared by The Tennessee Holler and Mark Elliot. Both threads started an important discussion about school uniforms and wearing masks during the Covid pandemic, as the highly infectious delta variant continues to spread. The situation in Hamilton County is quite confusing. Ironically, the Hamilton County Schools webpage notes that face coverings are a must. However… parents still have the ability to opt their children out of wearing them. Thus, the entire policy sounds more like a recommendation rather than an obligation, as the Chattanooga Times Free Press notes.
Mark’s thread on Twitter racked up nearly 60k likes, meanwhile, The Tennessee Holler’s post got almost 30k likes.
According to the Chattanooga mom, it’s best to empower young women instead of shaming them into “covering up their shoulders (and other parts of their body).”
However, in an interview with Raw Story, the mom highlighted the fact that she wanted to draw attention to the importance of wearing masks in schools.
“While I disagree with the dress code policy, I’m not really in this to fight that policy. My goal is to draw attention to the importance of mask usage in our schools. We need to base decisions around this issue on medical data and be guided by the recommendations of experts in this area. But I’m up for fighting the dress code once we get the mask issue taken care of!” she told Raw Story.
“We should be guided by science and the recommendation of experts, not by what Tucker Carlson says. Our cases and hospitalization rates in Hamilton County have spiked up in a big way the past few weeks. We are back to where we were last February. It’s very discouraging. There is a very loud contingency agitating against mask use, but I do not believe they are representative of most of us who want to keep ourselves and others safe. Hardly anyone is wearing masks at this point, which is troubling given the spread of the delta variant,” she said.
“It is frustrating that people do not want to get vaccinated and they do not want to wear masks either. I hope that my letter will inspire others to make their voice heard and to advocate for policies that will keep our children and teachers safe.”

Go mom! I don't understand why some principals believe they can't enforce mask-wearing. They enforce all sorts of other rules constantly. (Also, most rules are for "safety." I can't think of a more significant "safety" step than a school full of unvaccinated children ensuring students aren't spraying saliva at each other during a global pandemic.)
They just mean that enforcing masks would be a pain in the butt and hard work for them so they decline the effort. They COULD enforce it, they just don't wanna bother.

And here we are once again. American institutions giving in to idiots. Like the mom said: " If it's possible to cherry pick on what policies your deluded mind wants to question and ignore, everything goes." If you choose that path, students can be late because "they've opted out of the coming in on time policy." or they can choose not to do their homework because " they have communicated that they opt out from homework." And the next level will be that they can't fail, because they chose to opt out of the grading system because "it doesn't align with their belief system. " I guess there's a reason why only the US has a sovereign-citizen movement.
Can you appreciate this mom's malicious compliance, though? Where she lives, people are super religious...but only about the things they pick and choose from the Bible; they ignore the rest. For example, they'll go on ad nauseum about homosexuality in Leviticus, while having tattoos, eating pork and shellfish, and the like. This school's policy stems from that nonsense.

I love this mom. I had a teacher who was never one of mine, grab me in the hallway and pull me into the principal's office because I had less then an inch of my belly showing. I was told I needed to change, I obviously didn't have other clothes on me. They pulled my best friend out of his class to get me a sweater from his car... pisses me off to this day.
I am a teacher and I've never once dress coded a student. With the exception of asking a student to remove their hat/hood, I don't have the time or interest in quibbling over how many inches of a midrif a girl is showing! Honestly it's hit or miss who even gets called out on infractions. I'm just happy my school is enforcing masks (mostly because our governor mandated it in our state - New Jersey) but I'll take it!

Come on! You all know well and good these young women are dressing to entice their classmates. This has nothing to do with masks and everything to do with young men WHO HAVE BEEN TAUGHT THEY DON'T HAVE TO CONTROL THEMSELVES. it's all the responsibility of females. Taking this further, if females have been shown they must handle so much power over males, this must extend to the workplace, with higher pay grades for women,, and in the home.

Most American students don't go outside except for gym class, but then you change anyway, and the "sleeved" rule is usually only applied to girls. Boys can wear wife beaters and muscle tops

Kids are as much individuals as adults, and by all means, apply a dress code etc to the students and teachers alike and equally strict. Force hair cut styles or dock their wage, force dress code, or dock the wage or dismiss the teachers, and see just how far you will be dragged through lawsuits and spats with unions, or even get criminal records for disability or gender discrimination etc... Kids are forced to go to school, they dont get to opt out, so why should they be aubjected to rules that dont apply to adults? Hypocrisy on massive scale by power-hungry teachers and principals. Time to start treating kids as the individuals they are, and let them grow uniquely, rather than confirm ot a universal mould...

In HS, i worked at a mortgage company, up at front desk, around customers, etc. I was sent to detention for a shirt that i was fine to wear to work. If im ok to wear that to deal with customers at the office, it should've fine to wear to school. But no, i missed a class (that i had to get notes & make up work for) because the sleeves didnt fully cover my shoulder...in June...in the North East...
