A woman named Sharon Choksi got so fed up with not being able to find clothes for her daughter that would not be short, tight and pastel, she decided to come up with her own clothing line. This is how in 2013 Girls Will Be was born – clothes that empower girls to do whatever the heck they want and celebrate their personality. “There is definitely more than one way to be a girl – and it doesn’t have to always involve pink and sparkles,” says the company’s website.

Choksi says she got her inspiration from her daughter and niece, Maya and Grace, who wanted clothes that wouldn’t be frilly, “nothing with bows” and absolutely “NO sparkles.” The girls were interested in “climbing trees, building LEGO creations, and playing with cars and trucks”.

Meanwhile, for research purposes, Choksi collected boys and girls clothes from 10 of the biggest clothing stores that were made for kids of approximately the same age. It showed that compared to boy’s clothes, girl’s shorts are a third of the length, the shirts are three inches thinner and the sleeves are shorter.

Choksi started offering girl shorts and other clothes that were comfortable and ready for action- and this ‘no girlie-girl’ approach proved to be a success.
