Mom Gets Charged Extra $39.35 To Hold Her Baby After Giving Birth

Hospitals do everything in their power to provide the best conditions for a mother giving birth and it’s completely fine that they charge people for these services, but one facility went a step too far. A new mother received a $39.35 hospital bill for  “Skin To Skin” service which is just a fancy term for holding your child.

“The nurse let me hold the baby on my wife’s neck/chest. Even borrowed my camera to take a few pictures for us. Everyone involved in the process was great, and we had a positive experience. We just got a chuckle out of seeing that on the bill,” the father said.

"completely fine that they charge people for these services"? I'm so happy for health insurance in Europe, I never experience any bill like that, everything is paid by state or my employer, this is crazy ...

I'm sorry, but America is f****d. Seriously, as a society it is just a pitiful excuse.

Well, I grow up in the States from 1950 to 1970. I'm not surprised at all. This is a country where the money comes first, not humanity, that's all. Going to school there I learnt that USSR WAS THE DEVIL'S Deed! Now I've come to realise that the USA is no better with it's so many secret governmental organisations and real health plan for all. Money goes for WARS elsewhere.

Hmm...they've got to charge something or the doctors and nurses wouldn't get paid to do the hard jobs they do.

It's not a freakin' theme park!!! The hospital charged them. They should make it public which hospital did that. It is unethical!

Every hospital does. Some do funny breakdowns, some just put $000 w/o any explanation. Got a $1,200 bill for 15 mins of a doctor's attention.Told them I'll pay if they show itemized charged. They didn't do it. I didn't pay. Few bills later they gave up. Can't understand how the system works.

These charges are negotiable. Get on the phone, tell them you won't pay their Chargemaster rates, and get the whole thing down to 25%.

Not an extra charge, just a recording of what happened. If there was no skin to skin, the charge would have been added to the line item above.

Except its not an extra charge. Its just recording what happened. If there was no skin to skin, that charge would have been bundled with the line item above it. This is misleading reporting.

Well...First of all, the picture is inappropriate. Makes You feel more empathy for mother. It was a C-section, the stomach is still open when they apply the "skin to skin" procedure :) She couldn't hold the baby with venous port(s) in her arms. There is the operation still going on after extracting the baby. There might be severe complications /e.g. bleeding. Don't know the whole story and how the system in US works, maybe the 40 bucks is the compensation for doctors/nurses that she might "hold" the baby in every case, even if there is something serious going on behind the sterile curtains. Just sayin'...Otherwise they are just mean and stupid, they should at least conclude it in Csecton costs and nobody will notice, it looks ridiculous separately.

That's not bad. Can't put a price tag on holding a baby.
