Parents Adopt A Strange Dog, Find Out It’s Actually A Wolf Hybrid, It Turns Out To Be The Most Wholesome Dog Ever

People definitely love dog stories. All these narratives of cute fluffy doggos whose owners like to dress them in various fancy clothes, take pictures with them in cars and on walks, come up with funny photo stories… Well, there will be nothing like this in this particular story. And actually, this one is not quite about the dog.

Let’s make it clear – our story is about a relatively long time ago, when in the mid-’80s, the parents of the Original Poster, getting married after six years of dating, decided to get a dog together.

So this story, which got over 81K various reactions on a Tumblr blog, goes back to 1987, before the OP was born. Her mother’s parents had always loved animals, so at the time of the wedding, OP’s mother already had her own dog, which passed away due to illness. And that’s when the couple decided to go to a shelter and adopt a new dog.

More info: Tumblr

The original poster’s parents got married in 1987 and immediately decided to adopt a dog together

Image credits: Tim Weller (not the actual photo)

In the shelter, they were immediately offered not just a dog, but a Special Dog, for experienced owners, and even on favorable terms. In general, the dog – as much as 100 pounds of canine – was called Mazel, and she immediately won the hearts of her new owners. And then stranger things began…

The dog’s name was Mazel and she behaved rather strangely, opening the latches and hunting squirrels without any barking

In a couple of minutes, Mazel learned how to open the latches on any doors in the house. Then OP’s mom found out she practically did not bark – but quite successfully hunted squirrels, and brought them to her as trophies of sorts.

Finally, OP’s parents decided to take Mazel to the vet

Mazel knew all the commands pretty well, but she always took some time to think it over before obeying. In general, the owners decided to take her to the vet – just to check if everything was all right with her.

The vet, Dr. Hamada, walked into the waiting room, dropped his clipboard, and asked, “Where the hell did you get a wolf?”

Mazel turned out to be a hybrid of a wolf and a husky, so the vet warned she should be kept away from little kids

Mazel turned out to be a hybrid of a wolf and, probably, a husky. Dr. Hamada, noting that OP’s parents had a lot of experience, was not opposed to them keeping her, but warned that the wolfdog should be kept away from little kids…

And two years later, mother got pregnant…

The wolfdog accepted a new baby as her own tiny puppy

In general, when the OP as a tiny kid was brought home, Mazel immediately accepted her with delight as a newborn puppy – and assumed the responsibility of taking care of her. Mazel slept under the crib, helped the girl learn to walk by clinging to her thick fur – and one day, Dr. Hamada was horrified to see how the girl stuck her head right into Mazel’s mouth to look at her teeth.

Mazel easily won school Pet Day competitions

In general, Mazel grew up with OP, and later helped raising her younger sister. Of course, the girls had to comb out a huge amount of hair, make sure that she did not open the fridge and did not eat everything that was there – but on the other hand, she won school Pet Day competitions easily, and accompanied the sisters to and from school with a great pleasure.

Image credits: Tim Weller (not the actual photo)

When Mazel was 17 years old, OP’s parents decided to make some repairs in the house, and the workers had to appease the wolfdog with hamburgers every day – until they saw how OP’s little sister easily handled that “terrible beast”.

Mazel peacefully passed away at the age of 19

Mazel ended up living to the age of 19. As the OP notes herself, Death, just in case, decided to wait for her to fall asleep so that the wolfdog would not take away his scythe, mistaking it for a chewing toy…

Of course, we are not sure any of you have such a story in your memory, but dogs are so amazing as each of them is deeply individual and is an inexhaustible source of great stories. So feel free to tell yours and we bet these stories will be just aMAZELing.

Thank goodness one was an experienced dog owner and the other a quick and willing learner. Not everyone can handle and love a very intelligent, independent, and energetic dog. Even small dogs can be a handful. A couple near me has a miniature pinscher, and it's basically a cat in a dog suit.

Wonderful Story. BUT please don't try to get a Wolf hybrid! You can't know beforehand if you'll get something close to Mazel or an ultra dominant or extremly shy animal. All dogs come down from a Lineage of wolves that chose themselves to live near us and follow us. Dogs aren't descendants of random wolves! But Hybrids are. You NEVER know what you get! And than you and even more the dog might suffer badly! Please be responsible!

Yeah, Mazel ended up fine but letting her walk the streets alone? What if someone scared of dogs walked past? What if that fear triggered Mazel's hunting instincts? Fun story but I think also pretty irresponsible in some of the parts.

I grew up in quite literally the middle of nowhere and there was a family who had a wolf dog. Like, this thing was damn near the height of a 4-wheeler and completely white with eyes that would burn through your soul but he was the sweetest dog. It was slightly intimidating however, when he would let out a wolf-howl to shut the coyotes up at night though. *shiver*

In the early 70's, my family got a purebred white German Shepherd from a Mennonite farmer. Tiger's White Lady, after her sire. Gorgeous animal, huge for a female, 100 lbs in her prime. We lived outside of town, so I wandered and played with my large companion, who snapped bees and wasps out of the air, and kept door to door salesmen at a very respectful distance. She had so many wolf-like qualities we always suspected it made up a part of her lineage. Reading this brought tears of laughter and recognition of her antics, thank you.

My best friend had a wolf dog (hers was a lab/wolf though) My favourite story about Smokey was how he chased a raccoon up a tree, then proceeded to wait at the bottom of that tree for it to get tired and fall out. It took about 3 days, but that beast never left the bottom of that tree. Once the raccoon fell Smokey then proceeded to rip that raccoon to shreds.... just as my best friends school bus got there to pick her ip for school. Cue about 30 kids and a bus driver gobsmacked over what they were seeing

I've got a story. So, my family has a dog named Bruno. My mom despises this dog. As in listening to her cuss you know out Bruno is normal. Now, Bruno can be fairly aggressive. And then we have to watch out for other dogs when we were walking him and cuz he will pick a fight. He's also extremely protective of me and my siblings. So, one day a family friend comes to visit. She came in without announcing herself self and her face covered. She walked right into the room where me and my brother were. This dog (who for the record has been chased around by a firefly) walks right up to the family friend and bites her. My mom quickly got ahold of the situation. She told him to stop and he let go and walked away like it was nothing. My mom quickly to looking at the bite, it was serious and once my mom explained, the friend couldn't be mad. My mom looked at Bruno and said"I can't even be mad at you, you did what you were supposed to"long story short, he never got punished and is still kicking to

Our next door neighbours from my childhood home had a wolf. Very similar circumstances, a friend of a friend was trying to re-home their "puppy" and the neighbours took it in. Vet had pretty much the same reaction when they took their puppy for his first check up. That wolf was the GOODEST boy and regularly came on adventures in the woods with me and my friends.

I LOVE THIS STORY. I RECEIVED MY WOLF-DOG (also wolf husky hybrid) he was 7 Days old. I nursed him and took care and raised him up he was EXTREMELY IN LOVE WITH ME AND my 4 daughter as well as ALL 11 of my Grandbabies. When they were over he stuck to them like glue. When my daughters would go to leave he would get ahold of their sweater or jacket sleeve and take it off them because he didn’t want them to go. There are Good and not so good animals in all Breeds and animals. Must use love and sometimes “tough love” and don’t forget Respect! With all animals. The hair yea was crazy. My boy passed away a year ago and I am MISERABLE without him. He is with me for he was cremated. Sad yes but I was being selfish I guess. Didn’t want to bury him just anywhere and I had no yard at that time. He was beautiful and if I had a way to post his picture on here to show I would. He weighed between 120-150 lbs. he was my lil “monster “ God blessed me with him when I needed him most!

Wolf-hybrids typically don't make good pets since they have more instinct-driven personalities. Yes, SOME can make wonderful pets, the vast majority do not. Even the most well-intentioned dog lovers can be doing more harm than good. These dogs need A LOT of DAILY exercise, more than the average Husky, German Shepherd, etc. Wolf dogs can also have different dietary needs. Some vets may either be unable, or flat out refuse, to treat them. They may not have appropriately sized equipment on hand or do not have kennels or cages capable of safely containing the dog pre/post treatment. Long story short, please don't look to adopt wolf dogs! They are beautiful; they are just happiest and healthiest with highly experienced WD owners and a LOT of open space.

I had a quarter Wolf hybrid named Sacha...she was The Sweetest Puppy. She LOVED salads, was the smartest dog I'd ever had in my then 35 years. Sadly these doggos are more prone to Parvo than others & I lost her...still miss her 27 years later. That being said a friend had 2 Wolves, female was great but the male scared the c**p out of me, he was HUGE & would stare at me from behind furniture 😳 never been afraid of any Canine but that one. Wouldn't recommend these Hybrids unless you have a VERY large, VERY SECURE yard. ✌

Those hybrids were popular years ago. But the undomesticated side of them one out. Trying to keep them indoors caused problems with them tearing their way outside through your doors, windows and yes, even walls. They don"t make good pets for most. And even experienced dog owners couldn't handle them. Happy this story had a good ending in that the animal passed away after 19 years of a good life. But that wasn't"t the case for most of them. There were special rescues set up to take in the unwanted aggressive and home destroying animals. Thanks for the story though.

My Tala had that stare. She was also a wolf dog, but much less then this one though. My husband was always creeped out by it when he visited (before we married). He told me it was very eerie. *****Then again he does have this massive fear of being eaten alive by any of the apex predators (lions, tigers, bears, wolves, sharks.) He once told me that if he was ever attacked by any animal to shoot him. (I told him if there is a gun involved why not the animal…. Oh well, looks like I got my orders. 😂)

Mine was more huskie than wolf and she just passed at 14 a couple weeks ago but MY GOD are they smart! She understood everything you said but that didn't mean she'd abide unless it was worth her while. One time I was cooking dinner and went out for a smoke, when I came back in the entire loaf of bread was gone. No crumbs anywhere the dog laying peacefully in the living room looking at me like, "What?" So I thought 'did I pull a dumb dumb and take it outside and leave it?" Went back out and nothing! Just as I was opening the door to come back in I saw through the window the dog was hungrily munching on the entire loaf but as soon as she heard the door click to open she snatched it up and hid it back under the couch and went back to the spot she was laying in looking all innocent. I had no idea animals were capable of that level of intelligent deception! It utterly blew my mind and inspired me to move to a less harmful lifestyle to animals.

I have never understood people's fear of hybrid dogs. I grow up with one. We got him from some friends of my parents. They had a sheep farm and an Australian sheep dog, she got pregnant by a wolf and we got one of the pups. His name was Jack. He too did not bark when he was hunting. He also would not use the bathroom on our lawn. He always headed for the hills or woods to use the bathroom. He was incredibly smart and sweet. Very very protective of everybody in our family particularly us kids. We had to put him down at 18 years of age. He had cancer all through his body. How I loved that dog.

Had a couple I was friends with in my early 20's. They had a wolf hybrid. He was gorgeous and absolutely amazing. He was perfectly behaved..... as long as one of them was there. Even if he knew you, you were best served NEVER to go on that property if they weren't home. I got there before they did one day when we were meeting at their house. I prudently sat in my car just short of their driveway, until they arrived. He watched intently even though he knew me and my car. But once they were there, he was a goofy lovable attention whòre, demanding pets and love! Know the limits with ANY dog, and respect them, and you're fine!!

I've had one. His name was Bear. He looked intimidating but was the sweetest baby boy and he was very much loved by all. I remember once we were playing fetch in the front yard one day and 2 older ladies were walking by he got excited and ran over to them they were scared to see this big dog approaching them but I yelled to them not to be frightened he just wanted more attention so the proceeded to pet him it satisfied him and he ran right back to me... oh just thinking about it makes me smile. I took him every year to the vet to get his pic taken with Santa and he had a bandana around his neck that said jingle my bells. And there are people who do breed these types of hybrids. Bear was a mixture of 3 however we had a German Sheppard and she was bread with our neighbors huskey/wolf...bear was one of their beautiful offspring.

I'm sitting in a restaurant almost crying while eating dinner - my wolf dog was Sheba & she was everything to me growing up. She was easily the best, smartest I'd ever seen. I had thrown in my garbage a bone from a left over piece of chicken - not thinking as a kid. She grabbed it, I stuck my hand in her mouth mortally afraid of bone splinters hurting my beloved friend. She bit down, punctured my fingernail & immediately opened her mouth wide & spit out the chicken bone when she realized what she bit. Her ears dropped & she looked at me sooo sadly, afraid & ashamed. I completely forgot about my finger & comforted her until she felt better - a very long time. She & I both learned a valuable lesson from that.

Mabel sounds like she was an amazing companion. I didn’t even know her and feel sad that she’s gone. Stories of dogs that insert themselves into active roles in the family, like Mazel walking a block by herself to get the girls from school, always make me smile. Its good to know she went peacefully in what sounds like one of her favourite spots in the yard.

I would love to have a Mazel of my own. I have had Saint Bernard's and I would bet they would be about as protective, strong, intimidating and a loving animal to their family as a wolf hybrid. 290# Saints are scary to pretty much everyone. She definitely sounded like she had an amazing childhood with one heck of a loving wolf dog.

My husband and I had a wolf hybrid Lakota sweet boy lived to be 12 years old. My husband stayed up all night with him the day he started to fail and took him to the vet that morning to put him to sleep. I think all of us cried that day, me, him and the three kids. He was a good boy and a good singer to the sirens.

Could leep a 6' fence but never misbehaved he instinctually stayed right by my side anytime we where out in public. Had a leash on him but never needed the leash, it usually drug on the ground. He weighed about 120 lbs of pure muscle and lots of fur. This story remindse of the best dog I ever had!

We lost our house in a fire a few years ago. What saddens me most was losing all 109 photo albums. In those albums were shots of a magical life in the woods. We befriended porcupine, racoons, deer, bear, and even became foster parents to the most amazing 125lb wolf/German Shepherd named Max, for one year. The respect and awe I had for this amazing creature will grace me forever. It was 1981 when Max came to us, quite unexpectedly. He was so loving, intelligent and an absolute clown. It was agonizing to give him back to his owners, but I am forever grateful to have had that privilege of enjoying his amazing energy for a year. How fortunate your family was to have that experience for so long. ❤️

My grandparents had a wolf-huskie hybrid dog named Nika. Best dog ever!!!! Wicked smart and very loyal. Never once did she hurt anyone but we all knew she would protect us if we needed her to. My grandpa would tell her to go out and go potty, and that is what she would do, on command. I still miss her to this day.

When I was a kid, we had a Samoyed/German Shepherd/Rocky Mtn. gray wolf mix female pup named Moco, Spanish for bugger. We got her before she was fully weaned so I bottle-fed her for a few weeks. She started small but she got BIG. Our mama cat treated her like a cat. Tried to groom her all the time. Never got past her face because of all the long fur. Samoyed smile and black& white German Shepherd body. She guarded all the other cats, especially our 1 kitten. Not sure how her parents got together. Mom had found snail pellets.

I had a wolf/husky/shepard mix named Heidi. She was a huge beautiful dog who would lick a robber in the face but if a dog messed with us kids - she would leap through the air and have it on the ground where she would give it a hard scary stare then let it up and watch while it ran in terror!!! Sadly we lost her ar only 2 years old from cancer. I have so many amazing memories riding her like a horse, snuggling and having her protect me from all those mean dogs!

Depends on a lot of luck and environment too. Some wolf hybrids can take some of the more dangerous characteristics. Most people should not own them or most of the larger, more "primitive" (closer genetically to the wolf) breeds. Huskies, Malamutes, etc... It takes a lot of extra effort and knowledge, as well as patience for even the best of them. But if you click, they are the best. If not, it can be miserable for both sides.

Oh and she absolutely lived to protect and care for my daughter after she was born. She did all the same things especially her high chair. Lol

Yooooo. We had a wolfdog. Her name was Sheba. Hunted rodents, showed us her prizes. Opened doors, latches. Hardly Barked and when my baby sister was born, you would have thought my sister was also a wolfdog pup. Lol. She was so friggin intelligent I just knew she could talk if we practice. She would vocalize her emotions. Oh yeah, walk me to the bus stop before school and would be there waiting for me to arrive to walk me back home. Yes. Here's to the best dogs ever. WOLFDOOGS!!!

Ok, the story is fine in and of itself. All the ridiculous bs scattered throughout is unnecessary, especially when (what I happened to see) is basically just restating what the OP has already stated! Stop. This. Bullsh*t. If you want to add an intro and a few ending thoughts, fine, but journalism is NOT simply reduntantly repeating what is already being stated by the source. Ffs. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

One of my friends in high school had an actual wolf as a pet. It was the most beautiful creature but was equally just as terrifying. Her howls were bone chilling. Never thought to ask back then how they acquired a wolf as their pet.

I have a friend who has had 2 of these dogs in his life, one lived to be not quite 25 and the other was 23, lost at 23 to cancer, so who knows how long she might have lived. They are amazingly loyal with serious I own it attitude.

I too once had a wolf/Sheppard hybrid. OMG he was the smartest dog I have ever seen.
