It is considered that criticizing modernity is the business of boomers. Older people, for example, are well aware that in the past, films were way more interesting, friendships were stronger, the sky bluer, and in general the whole world was much better than it is now. On the other hand, the modern world could be a tad bit better than it really is.

At the end of the 20th century, many scientists believed that the new one would become the golden age of mankind - and indeed, with the rapid development of technology, medicine, and the growth of total comfort, one could really expect something like that. But in fact, we are now about as far from the "golden age" as we were a quarter of a century ago. But why?

Perhaps the problem is that modernity is full of not-so-comfortable and pleasant trends. For example, recently on the AskReddit community, someone asked the question "What modern trend do you absolutely hate?" The thread went viral, gaining nearly 26K upvotes and over 19.5K comments in just a few days. It turned out that a variety of people, both old and young, are dissatisfied with many things in the world that surrounds us now.

Bored Panda has compiled for you a selection of the most interesting and thought-provoking opinions from this viral thread. So feel free to scroll to the very end, and be sure to write what you think about it. Perhaps you are also unhappy with something that we missed, in which case we definitely have to know!

Moving the HVAC controls to the screen is just dangerous. Especially the idiotic way VW have done it. My wife has a modern car and while it does have a touchscreen, primary functions can be controlled via the steering wheel buttons and the HVAC controls are dials and buttons

I'm a millenial. My mom a boomer but is as poor as dirt, don't even own a house. My youngest cousin are gen Z. Oldest are Gen X.

None of this is our fault. We're all in this s**t together. We're all struggling.

I've been trying to decide where the division point is when kid's being told their generation is lazy, stupid, etc. and become adults telling the next generation that they suck etc. I am so tired of people repeating almost word for word what was said about their generation by the generation before, with no awareness of their personal amnesia.

Generalizing generations is bogus at best, deceitful at worst. In diverse nations, any age cohort is non-homogenous. Family income, race, social status, location, and more, keep us from being honestly clumped together.

Gen X here and this is too true. We have all been living through 7.25 an hour, meager to no savings, poor or no medical insurance. Many Xers don't own a home. Many Xers take care of old parents/ aunts, uncles. To be fair many Boomers don't have much either, especially if they are POC's. They had to sit in the back of the bus, no GI bill to help buy a home, low to no educational opportunities. I just want us all to win.

Yet 61% over 65 voted to leave, a massive group as well. It was primarily boomers, not Gen X with Brexit. Also boomers who are the ones with the paid for property by and large, Gen X mainly have sizable mortgages and are still watching elderly parents totter around large homes (also our adult kids are still at home and we are trying to help them save). As for the climate, how many younger people are forgoing travel, tech, using cycling/public transport instead of driving etc. All big pollutants. Recycling your rubbish is good, but insufficient. Blame isn't helping, we seriously need better solutions.

Gen X also had seriously high interest rates on mortgages for years and years. Topped out at around 15% to 17%. I had payments in the 80s that were over £2k a month. That is around £7500 in todays money! I definitely couldn't afford that right now! Tiny property too. We needed less money for deposits back then though, and big mortgages were easy to get hold of! Those things are more difficult for young people today for certain. Life always has its challenges though. We also worried about the IRA bombs and nuclear bombs... some things change and some things never go away sadly.

It’s called divide and conquer. If you can get the very people you’re cheating and treating like s**t arguing with each other, you can keep on cheating them and treating them like s**t. With impunity. It’s your guess which of the one percenters are most at fault, if not all. Once we’re ALL finally wise to their tricks, and decide we’re not putting up with it anymore, it’ll break their stranglehold on our lives. Then maybe, once we’ve cleaned house, gotten rid of them and their cronies, and replaced them with people of purpose, vision, and genuine desire to serve ALL of us, some truly equitable social progress can be made.

I’m pretty sure every generation has its altruists, assholes, benefactors, faults, shittiness, contributions, f**k ups, chill people, zealots, dumbasses, geniuses, trolls, do-gooders, criminals, activists, lazy asses, etc. What they do not have is a claim to the “best” generation. They’re all great and they all suck, so please just stop with pontificating about how people born within x and y years are better than everyone else. Newsflash - they’re not. And for f**k’s sake, stop with the constant memes. Jesus Christ, those are annoying (and stupid). Love, Generation I Don’t Give A S**t When You We’re Born

Going to have to take issue with this one. The boomers gave us the Cold War, Nixon, Kissinger, and Reagan. We (genX) took that and decided that disco, punk, and new wave were how we were going to survive the inevitable apocalypse. We gave you John Hughes movies, Ghostbusters, Blondie, Ramones, Motorhead, Bauhaus, and Siouxsie. We hoped that you (genY+) would take our legacy, cherish it, build upon it, improve upon it. And what did you do? Movie "reboots", Debbie Gibson, and Rebecca effing Black. Oh, and "The Phantom Menace". We're not blaming you, and we're not angry. We're just very very disappointed.

Nearly the entire population of an entire European country 45+ Million Americans live in the legal definition of poverty. Capitalism has evolved to keep you in that state, its infrastructure protects its hegemony and the societal manipulation of your consciousness ensures that you the victims of Capitalism will defend its continuation with your lives. Much has been attributed to Karl Marx and his so-called Marxism but his only two real worthwhile contributions were in my opinion; his push for class consciousness (basically just figure out how YOU yourself are ripped off) and how to think and then analyse that data to 'Change what you see' (dialectical materialism) this one is actually written on his grave.

I've been around a while, and the term "generation gap" has been something talked about for far longer than I've been alive. "Kids/Parents just don't understand!" "Kids today have no work ethic!" "The older generation is so narrow-minded!" Such is the truism of humanity, and so it will likely always be, methinks.

It’s turned into a talk show. News networks only cast people who have loud personalities and lean VERY hard one way politically. They only cast people to make the news more popular by finding cast that make you think “I wish I could hand out with them”.

NEWS NEEDS TO BE A NEUTRAL PLACE TO GATHER INFORMATION TO MAKE A DECISION FOR YOURSELF. It’s not the f*****g Wendy Williams Show. We don’t care how the anchor feels about it. WE WANT FACTS AND NEUTRAL INFORMATION!

*Edit after having a lot of good conversations with y’all-* I wish the consumers of news wanted more straight forward facts and non-bias information. I know that news networks love the views, but it seems to be more entertainment than news.

As a dental hygienist, I do oral cancer screenings and part of that is palpating the lips- augmented lips feel very different from natural lips, not in a good way. Natural lips are consistent in feel with no discernible lumps, and should be soft, elastic and slightly firm. Augmented lips actually feel like there is a hard rope running inside the length of the lip or tiny pearls deep inside when you palpate them (depending on how they're augmented). It's not pleasant to feel- I always wonder how it must feel to kiss someone with that.

Even cars are going subscription model. BMW calls it “Functions on Demand”. If you want heated seats, you can pay for a subscription. You can subscribe from a month, a few years or unlimited. Though I’m pretty sure when someone buys that car second hand again, an unlimited subscription won’t be transferred to the new owner… they will have to buy unlimited again. Just like how Tesla has been deactivating the Ludicrous package from the previous owner so that the next person has to pay again.

I stopped giving my email and phone numbers out to retail staff after learning Canada's Michael's rewards are non-existent. We're not collecting points nor are we able to use them. It's been a few years and staff still don't know when or if we're getting rewards for Michael's arts and crafts. But they still ask for your email address with every purchase. I just say I'm not bothering anymore. Recordings for customer service is only really for training purposes. When new hires are being trained the managers will show examples from real calls (edited to leave out the person's identity of course) and will use good and bad ones. It's also to ensure the reps are doing their job and if there's any discrepancy they have the recording to refer to. Call centres are not distributing these recordings to other 3rd party companies unless it's a client and there's a legal warrant in obtaining that recording. That's all.
