It is considered that criticizing modernity is the business of boomers. Older people, for example, are well aware that in the past, films were way more interesting, friendships were stronger, the sky bluer, and in general the whole world was much better than it is now. On the other hand, the modern world could be a tad bit better than it really is.

At the end of the 20th century, many scientists believed that the new one would become the golden age of mankind - and indeed, with the rapid development of technology, medicine, and the growth of total comfort, one could really expect something like that. But in fact, we are now about as far from the "golden age" as we were a quarter of a century ago. But why?

Perhaps the problem is that modernity is full of not-so-comfortable and pleasant trends. For example, recently on the AskReddit community, someone asked the question "What modern trend do you absolutely hate?" The thread went viral, gaining nearly 26K upvotes and over 19.5K comments in just a few days. It turned out that a variety of people, both old and young, are dissatisfied with many things in the world that surrounds us now.

Bored Panda has compiled for you a selection of the most interesting and thought-provoking opinions from this viral thread. So feel free to scroll to the very end, and be sure to write what you think about it. Perhaps you are also unhappy with something that we missed, in which case we definitely have to know!

For driving safety I wanna keep my eyes on the road, and want to find controls (like window wipers, radio (OK in car audio podcast)) by touch. With a touch screen I have to look to see if I am touching the right place on screen for the control I want to frob.

Moving the HVAC controls to the screen is just dangerous. Especially the idiotic way VW have done it. My wife has a modern car and while it does have a touchscreen, primary functions can be controlled via the steering wheel buttons and the HVAC controls are dials and buttons

I hope the buttons on her steering wheel are easy to memorize by touch. It was always bad enough trying to figure out the controls while driving an unfamiliar car, but at least they were different shapes located in different areas within arm’s reach of the steering wheel—-and did not require taking your eyes off the road to look at a screen to access them. If they really wanted to innovate, they should’ve bypassed by the touchscreen entirely, and made those controls voice activated instead—-yet retained the traditional knobs and make it possible to turn off voice activation to drive manually, and quietly. What kind of odds do you want to lay that, as these cars roll out and are purchased, the number of accidents stemming from this new distraction will greatly increase? Well, unless the touchscreens stop working once the car’s paid off and you’re back to manual, just like certain features did in the past—-remember the automatic seatbelts from the nineties? They were great until they went up and the shoulder belt ended up permanently jammed halfway to your shoulder.

It really is dangerous. It would be easier, for example, to feel the third button across, rather than having to take your eyes off the road to look at a screen.

Texting while driving is such an issue now, even talking on your phone is a no no, and yet more and more cars are going touchscreen. Hello? There's absolutely no difference in texting and operating that stupid touch screen. There is absolutely no way to do anything on that screen without looking directly at it. I can talk on my phone all day without looking at it and yet that's illegal, but taking my eyes off the road for hundreds of feet to operate that touch screen is okay? My older cars with buttons and knobs, I can do anything just by feel, no need to look.

Most of the screen controls are on the steering wheel or on the console where the gear shift is. Then they you can navigate through the menus using the plus/minus options on the wheel. I am someone who can't use a phone while driving at all...I'm so uncoordinated and can't take my eyes off the road out of panic. But even I have no issue with navigation through the steering wheel. I honestly have a harder time trying to deal with my car heat and air settings while driving.

This is the reason I will never own a Tesla or some of these other EVs. That and it looks like a prop from a sci-fi movie. Cool if you're a mentally stunted child that wants to announce to the world that you're part of the future or something. I'm done with driving when this stuff is universal. I only drive a stick shift car, with mainly manual controls. (Audio/sat nav excepted) I want to feel like I'm driving the car, not sharing the responsibility with something that can't die when it hits something large and hard.

It started with the buttons everywhere frenzy. My dad rented this ridiculous car in 2016 that had - I kid you not - over 70 buttons for everything and anything. I couldn't stop laughing at the one opening the glove box, that wasn't even anywhere near the glove box. It took us an embarrassingly long time to figure out how to open the damn thing.

It’s turned into a talk show. News networks only cast people who have loud personalities and lean VERY hard one way politically. They only cast people to make the news more popular by finding cast that make you think “I wish I could hand out with them”.

NEWS NEEDS TO BE A NEUTRAL PLACE TO GATHER INFORMATION TO MAKE A DECISION FOR YOURSELF. It’s not the f*****g Wendy Williams Show. We don’t care how the anchor feels about it. WE WANT FACTS AND NEUTRAL INFORMATION!

*Edit after having a lot of good conversations with y’all-* I wish the consumers of news wanted more straight forward facts and non-bias information. I know that news networks love the views, but it seems to be more entertainment than news.

As a dental hygienist, I do oral cancer screenings and part of that is palpating the lips- augmented lips feel very different from natural lips, not in a good way. Natural lips are consistent in feel with no discernible lumps, and should be soft, elastic and slightly firm. Augmented lips actually feel like there is a hard rope running inside the length of the lip or tiny pearls deep inside when you palpate them (depending on how they're augmented). It's not pleasant to feel- I always wonder how it must feel to kiss someone with that.

Even cars are going subscription model. BMW calls it “Functions on Demand”. If you want heated seats, you can pay for a subscription. You can subscribe from a month, a few years or unlimited. Though I’m pretty sure when someone buys that car second hand again, an unlimited subscription won’t be transferred to the new owner… they will have to buy unlimited again. Just like how Tesla has been deactivating the Ludicrous package from the previous owner so that the next person has to pay again.

I stopped giving my email and phone numbers out to retail staff after learning Canada's Michael's rewards are non-existent. We're not collecting points nor are we able to use them. It's been a few years and staff still don't know when or if we're getting rewards for Michael's arts and crafts. But they still ask for your email address with every purchase. I just say I'm not bothering anymore. Recordings for customer service is only really for training purposes. When new hires are being trained the managers will show examples from real calls (edited to leave out the person's identity of course) and will use good and bad ones. It's also to ensure the reps are doing their job and if there's any discrepancy they have the recording to refer to. Call centres are not distributing these recordings to other 3rd party companies unless it's a client and there's a legal warrant in obtaining that recording. That's all.
