Swedish Model Gets Criticized Because Of Hairy Legs In Adidas Campaign, And The Comments Are Too Horrible To Read
311Kviews
The popular sports brand Adidas has recently launched its Fall/Winter campaign “Superstar” which focuses around authenticity and features the “icons of tomorrow” – models, artists, activists, and athletes. Since Superstar sneaker was designed to “redefine beauty”, no wonder it caused such controversy as soon as the video was posted on the internet.
The main reason behind this was Arvida Byström, a Swedish artist, model and photographer, known for advocating against stereotypes and being a big activist of the “no-shave” movement. She casually posed in a white dress, pink shirt and pastel Superstar shoes. While creating a pretty “girly” image, she also caused a storm for showing her unshaved legs. Some people have been insulting her since, leaving nasty comments below Youtube video and even sending rape threats directly to her.
“I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like to not possess all these privileges and try to exist in the world. Sending love and try to remember that not everybody has the same experiences being a person,” Byström wrote on her Instagram after.

However, others were more positive about the campaign:

It bothers me that leg hair is controversial.
There are a lot of shallow jackwagons--both male and female--out there that expect females to be as hairless as dolphins. It irritates me to think that this was a societal norm created by the razor industry because they wanted to sell more razors and females were an untapped market, thus the marketing and body-shaming began.
Anthony lolol Again with not using your brain (and I say "brain" instead of "brains" coz, let's face it, I doubt that you have 2 of them lol)... There was no razor back in that ancient history of yours! lolol... And as "Freak" mentioned, shaving was promoted by the razor industry... just like engagement rings were promoted by the diamond industry... Please, don't tell me that there was engagement rings back in ancient history lolol... Look it all up, buddy! lolol... women shaving and engagement rings are pretty recent!!! lolol...
actually it's been a fad that's come into and out of vogue throughout pretty much all of human history. Cleopatra, for example practiced dilapidation of just about everything. (Along with other contemporary Egyptian women.) Rome saw hair as barbaric and it was frequently removed from everywhere by both men and women. 17th centurry, Queen Elizibeth removed eyebrows- to increase the apparenty size of her forehead- and was followed by the rest of a certain segement of the population. King Camp Gillete (the guy that invented the safety razor) didn't create a fad- he exploited it. Women were already using the safety razor he invented, even though they were marketed for men because they were the most effective/convenient/whatever product to attain a certain goal. My point is that while nobody should be shamed for how they appear, people often go to extreme, and frequently odd lengths to look a certain way. Personally, i find somebody being who they are- whatever that is- more attractive.
That's right. I mean, it's normal for humans to be hairy. It's already carved in our genetic makeup. So why some people make a fuss over something like this?
I thought it was promoted by the porn industry amongst men, thus influencing women to go hairless.

Don't be silly. Preferring women with hairless skin has nothing to do with the razor industry; it just looks better. Women with hairy skin are disgusting, partially because of the way it looks and partially because they made such a decision.

err no, ppl have had the taste that body hair looks manly on women for ages.. shaving has been done since ancient history.

wow, you both make me laugh. this is not a norm created by the razor industry (let me guess, you also believe lizard people are real). it's a norm created by woman who were embarrassed by themselves and decided to do something to look more appealing. saying men are attracted to women who shave their bodies are pedophiles is just as saying that men who are attracted to women who do not shave their legs are homosexuals.
It bothers me that this is what people are worried about today.
Women have body hair. Prepubescent girls do not. It bothers me that grown women are supposed to look like little girls in order to be deemed attractive. Does this feed paedophilia by somehow normalizing it?
If you can't tell the difference between a little girl and a grown woman, body hair or not, you have bigger problems than you think. It's none of your business what people do with their bodies, and that includes shaving. Do it or not, but you don't get to judge others.
Monika, you make a very disturbing but valid point.
Every person has body odor...

What surprises you? From the tops of their heads to their soles of their feet, women are the essence of artificiality. Think about it, when you include leg shaving, there's not two square inches of a woman's visible face and body that are not camouflaged in one way or another.
Giving me a history lesson on shaving isn't going to convince me that hairy legs are attractive. Humans didnt have toilets for most of human history too so lets go back to shitting in the streets. God you post-modern brainwashed dikes are relentless about tearing down every positive thing that modern civilization and culture has made. Hygiene, beauty, fashion, everything. And you go so far as to hijack major companies to push this crap in peoples faces, and when they naturally don't like it and push back, you adopt a position of moral outrage and try to shame society. Like hello? Who do you think you are.
Ever try wearing nylons without shaving? Case closed.
Yes. And somehow people could gone batshit crazy about this just like every time issue of racism is thrown.

its not controversial, it just looks bad. same as plaque on teeth or toe/back hair on a guy.
Anthony... Again with your stupid "plaque" analogy that has no basis, nor correlation, with the subject at hand!!! lolol You sound like a broken record! lolol...
EVERY WOMAN HAS BODY HAIR. Grow up and get over yourselves. It's just hair.
I prefer shaving it. I never had a lot to begin with but am much more comfortable without it. I like smoooth!
unfortunately hair seam to be one of the few proteins that invoke disgust in people when it not on someones head
So? Every woman also shits, pees, and does other disgusting things, so does that mean women should drop all modern standards of beauty and hygiene and go back to being disgusting slobs that shit on the streets? Myself and most other men find hairy legs and armpits on a woman disgusting. Period. If you want to walk around hairy, its a free country, but you have no right to dictate to me what to think and if you're going to tell me to "get over myself" I will tell you to pound sand. Who the hell do you think you are.

Everyone gets plaque too, so should we accept it and give encouragement to models that dont brush their teeth?
Plaque isn't something that grows FROM the body itself! It is a result of food residue left on the teeth for at least 24 hours! Seriously man!, think about what argument you're trying to make coz what you''re bringing forth in this discussion has no weight at all!... If hair is so gross to you, why don't you shave ALL your hair!!!???.. You REALLY need to come up with an argument that makes sense and has a correlation with what's being discussed here! lol You repeatedly using the "plaque and brushing teeth" example, is the same as you comparing apples and oranges.. Your example has absolutely no basis, nor correlation, with this subject, and which should be about something that comes naturally FROM the body itself, and not something external to it and which gets stuck to the body! You're showing how intellectually deprived you are!!! lol And the fact that you're unable to accept a woman in her natural form says a lot about you, and that's besides the body shaming you've been doing! lol
So Im guessing you shave and wax your body Anthony?
Well it is choice , isn't it? She is a very pretty girl- obviously has a brain or she would conform. Personally it is not an aesthetic I would embrace, but that is MY choice. However- it is reprehensible that people would attack her for such a pathetic statement- Come on- It's just body hair and HERS at that- mind your own business, haters!
Re-reading I see I wrote her statement was pathetic- not what I meant- I meant condemning it was pathetic- sometimes my fingers go faster than my thoughts can filter to them- apologies~
Very Well said Amarathim I am in Total agreement with you - Cheers.
Amen.
People are not attacking her for her choice. People are attacking her for promoting this disgusting choice and they are offended that a major corporation is promoting a disgusting political statement like this and trying to shame them for not conforming to it. This is just another pillar of our modern western civilization that ideologues want to tear down. This "body positivity crap." Society used to be beautiful and inspiring. You would look at advertisements and see beauty and uplifting, inspiring messages. You would look at public buildings and see beautiful architecture celebrating the best of humanity. Now a days its the opposite. A race to the bottom. Ugly women. Ugly people. Fat people instead of fit people. Hairy unkept bodies, unaesthetic body modifications, mediocrity and subversion of beauty and aesthetics. This naturally annoys people. It gives one the sense of living in a decaying society that has gone too far and lost itself in unrestrained depravity.

"obviously has a brain or she would conform." Since you went there, non-conformism is often every bit as brainless as conformism and in fact often is just conformism of a more obstreperous type.
And....cappy pulled out the thesaurus today
If it's not supposed to be there, why does it grow there? No girl should feel obligated to shave.
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
so you shouldnt brush your teeth either then right?
That doesn't make sense. Having hairy legs isn't a hygienic issue. Not brushing teeth can lead to tooth decay and a bunch of other problems if you eat what the vast majority do these days. Hairy legs aren't going cause your leg to fall off. It's literally just appearance.
One of these has a real function (itd tbe cleaning of the teeth in caser you don't get that) the other is just the current cultural trope. Just like we used to like people to be at least a little chubby and now are trained to like too skinny people. Maybe in a hundred years the fashionable look is painting yourself purple. Don't say that can't happen, in the past we wore big white wigs and having a tan meant that you must be a poor person.
I sure hope you shave all your hair too then, Anthony! If that's how strongly you despise hair, I can assume you're completely smooth all over. Don't forget to shave your eyebrows and your eyelashes too! X''D
I met a guy who actually didn't brush because he wanted his teeth to fall out and get fake ones I guess. It was very hard to ignore so... there are some similarities to Anthony's statement. However The First and The Last's point does stand on their bias towards harm over appearance.
Good for her. Those haters suck. Seriously, what makes male body hair so clean and pure and acceptable, but women's body hair inherently dirty or nasty? It's yet another double-standard that needs to go. I've got so much internalized misogyny embedded in me over the years, that I still have a gut-reaction of "eww" at the images, even though mentally I know better. I'm trying my best to work past that, though. The more women are brave enough to go natural, the easier it'll become for us all to get past the initial feeling of discomfort. It was the same to me with the idea of homosexuality (as a kid, I was like 'eww,' but over time I accepted it, until now I'm completely comfortable with it and support the equality they deserve), and of transgender people (I'm still practicing, but finding it easier and easier to use people's preferred pronouns, even neutral ones like "they/them"). This is why famous examples are important, to help us all accept positive changes for the better.
Well said, and good on you!
Amazing comment ZaCloud and, I applaud you from down here in New Zealand!

Nobody said male body hair is clean, pure or acceptable. You just created a non-existent double standard. To be turned off by hairy women legs is not misogyny, it's just a distaste. Women who don't shave their kegs are not brave, they're lazy or European. This topic has no equivalent to homosexuality or transgenderism: you're just tripping over your own feet to virtue signal how liberal you are.
Valefar, the majority of society thinks women with leg or armpit hair are "gross" or "disgusting", but not men with the same. What's the opposite of gross and disgusting? Clean and pure. And BECAUSE women face this disgust if they dare not to shave, they ARE brave to endure it. Not shaving isn't lazy, anyway. It's spending your time and effort more wisely doing something more productive. And I brought up those other social issues to show that I'm not perfect from the get-go, but still learning to accept new norms in society. Society instilled in me the disgust at ladies' body hair, so I'm still working on strengthening my sense of logic over my primitive emotions. You too seem to have work to do in that regard. Good luck.

"what makes male body hair so clean and pure and acceptable, but women's body hair inherently dirty or nasty? It's yet another double-standard that needs to go." You sure about that? When's the last time you saw a shirtless man in a movie or magazine that had torso hair? I don't think that only the hairless happen to lift weights. Men now are criticized if they have hairy nuts too. Go ask the next group of girls you see how they feel about a man with lots of back hair. When a man gets a haircut, the back of his neck usually gets shaved, and many, many women accept nothing less than a clean shaven man, and even the bearded usually are told to shave the neck so it looks "clean". I'm so sick and tired of women claiming nonsense like the girls are sluts while guys are studs. People warn girls to stay away from manwhores, and men are ridiculed if they have a monobrow or a hairy torso or nuts, so cut the "whoa is us, the poor victims of these hypocritical brutes" act.
2/2... Have you never heard the phrase "It'll put hair on your chest!"? Or seen depictions of manly lumberjacks all bearded and hairy? Or the endearment in the gay community toward "bears"? Even Gaston bragging about his body hair as a positive trait? The list goes on and on. Man hair is nearly always seen as a normal part of being a man. Even as a trait that separates them from women. And therein lies the rub. To seem feminine, a woman is expected to be the opposite of a man. Quiet when he's loud (or she's a bitch), demure when he's confident (or she's bossy), frail while he's strong (or she's butch), and hairless while he's hairy (or you get all the insults, sneers, and rape threats this woman has gotten). There's no real comparison with your examples, as I've explained; men's body hair still has its places of social acceptance, while women's still has none other than the few tolerant people scattered around, like myself (and even then I'm still working on that).
Maybe it's different in the area I live in (Great Lakes), but I've never known anyone who expected men to be clean shaven. I don't know anyone who thinks man hair is gross, other than a few people being turned off by back hair (but not thinking it's disgusting or dirty, just less attractive). Men who build muscles have taken to shaving/waxing so the contours of their muscles are more visible. And the only arguments I've heard against neck hair have been the term "neckbeard", but that's only for men who specifically shave their faces but leave their necks hairy. This unusual way of grooming is mostly ridiculed due to its prevalence among obese gamers, though I do agree that it's wrong to make fun of them for it. Regardless though, even then, it's usually only brought up when they earn the insult with bad behavior, rather than when they're just walking through the grocery store. (1/2)

Bla bla bla.... Most women want to shave because they don't like their body full of hair. If a woman doesn't shave, it doesn't matter. She has the right to be hairry and I have the right to don't like it. I just don't say it. But, if there's a hairry woman and a space named "Comments", I might say that is gross. Thank you and bye!

its not that body hair looks dirty or nasty, its that it makes her look more masculine. the same as a guy shaving making him seem more feminine. unless hes buff its going to look equally as bad
WOW!!!! lolol Anthony lolol How low can you go with your comments!!!??? lolol Seriously!!!??? lololol... You actually can't use your brain to save your life, huh!? lolol... The reason YOU see that as "masculine looking" is because you've been indoctrinated/programmed/brainwashed into the societal norms that have been imposed on us!... If you would live in a society where the norm was to never shave, you'd find her pretty and feminine as hell... So now, you should really ask yourself why you have this intrinsic need to body shame her coz of her hair!? You have hair (well, your bald, though I'm pretty sure you have hair in other places)... do you feel grossed out by your own hair? or do you feel jealous that she actually has hair that grows naturally whilst you can't seem to grow one on top of your egg head??? I'm curious... And think about it... if you look at her as masculine looking, then... following your own logic... your baldness doesn't make you masculine looking at all...
(cont'd - #2) She's proclaiming that it's natural to have hair... So, if I were you, I wouldn't body shame her so quickly coz there's so much body shaming we could do to you! Coz... honestly, you're no model of beauty! Far from it... So, instead of putting other people down in order to lift yourself up (BTW, did you enjoy my body shaming you??? I didn't think you would! Though it served its purpose!), start working on your own self-esteem and confidence issues... You'll see that when you'll do that, you won't have the need to put other people down anymore!... And please, start thinking for yourself instead of behaving like a sheep... it really doesn't suit you!...
(cont'd) Maybe that's why you felt the need to grow a moustache? to compensate for the lack of hair on your head?... And I'm pretty sure you're gonna say that it's not the same thing and that baldness is accepted and even seen as sexy on certain men (not on you, though!)... Well, I remember that, not even 20 years ago, baldness was seen as a lack of virility... seen as a man not being a man... Hmmmm, I wonder what changed in 20 years to make it acceptable to be bald and not seen as lacking virility coz of it!?!?!?!? lolol... It's because of a change in perception!... Because some bald men stood up and publicly proclaimed that it was, in their case, natural to be bald (genetics playing a role here) and that they were embracing it! Over time, the rest of the world embraced that notion, too.. .even to the point of proclaiming that it was sexy (again... not on you, though!)... So... when you think about it, this model is doing the same thing as your bald men predecessors lol...
She looks gorgeous. Girls have furry legs too.. it's time that the world accepts us as we are.

she would be if she shaved, her hair is gross looking
Anthony... what's gross is you!... You're projecting big time!... Get a grip, learn to appreciate beauty in all its forms and stop disparaging her!... coz really, what you're basically doing is disparaging yourself with all your inane comments! Grow up and move on!... I wish you to fall madly in love with a woman who doesn't shave at all! lolol You'll then realize that it's just hair and that what counts is what's inside! Everything else is superfluous!... Really... grow up... mature! coz you REALLY REALLY need to mature big time lolol... I feel like I'm replying to a 15 year old boy who doesn't yet have the mental capacity to process things outside the stereotypes and imposed societal norms lolol... You're seriously embarrassing yourself and *shaking my head* it hurts to see you do that to yourself lololol...
Anthony, why do you anyone needs to hear your opinion on anybody's looks? I mean, if one is bad at sports, one doesn't mock an athlete. If one is small one doesn't mock the height of someone taller. We've seen your picture. You really are in no position to send derogatory remarks about other people. Shouldn't you rather work hard for a society where looks don't matter?
SHUT THE HELL UP CUZ U DON'T KNOW HER HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL IN A SPECIAL WAY
Anthony had mommy issues growing up
Women and men are equal if we a forced to shave then that's enough reason for men to shave their beards legs or chest. its natural for humans so don't just keep spreading hate on all the people that are being positive because i know you've wrote several negative replys that have been rapidly down voted
Ellie haha
oh god that's sexy. drool! who cares about haters? time to evolve. if a woman doesn't want to shave, who the hell are you to comment?

hairy armpits and legs looks gross, people are free to express their opinion of that, especially if shes modelling it.
No! Her modeling doesn't give ANYONE the right to body shame her, attack her, nor threaten her! Her being in the limelight is no excuse for other people's bad behaviour! So, please, don't try to excuse your poor morals and ethics with the fact that she's in the limelight for her convictions or otherwise! You have the right to your opinions, yes! However, this doesn't give you the right to bully people with your archaic views of how a woman should be, behave, and/or maintain herself! You REALLY need to look at your core values here coz they're beyond flawed! What's good for the goose is good for the gander! Chew on that for a while and pray that your brain will, one day, be able to process that appropriately! And please, stop with your poor rhetorics, coz you're publicly embarrassing yourself! lolol... Funny to see lol, though, at the same time, so so very sad! lolol...

You spelled "single" wrong
Newsflash, Alex K.: Us women tend to prefer partners who treat us with respect. What a concept, huh? :P
He finds her sexy enough to drool over and applauds women for doing what they want with their bodies and you think that means he'll be single? If I was single I would snap him up in a heartbeat. We need more men like him!
I bet you are a lousy lay tbh

this kind of ads kill the brands
I do not understand why people feel they can be hateful and insulting over what women choose to do with their own bodies. Do you think some people are constantly looking for something to judge others for? If it wasn't body hair it would by something else as insignificant. It doesn't really make any sense. We seem to live in a culture where it's acceptable to abuse, judge and threaten anyone simply for a difference of opinion. How did this happen?
You wouldn't believe the crap I get for having a full back tattoo. 'But you're soooo preppy!", they howl, as if I care.
What the heck does having a full back tattoo got to do with being "preppy" though? F*** them Aunt Messy, they're a pack of fools!
That's not remotely equivalent. You modified your body, she didn't.
lolol That's funny, though... coz back in the days (way way back), tattoos were ONLY for women!!!... Eventually men appropriated themselves that art and body shamed women for using it... And I think it's awesome that you have a full back tattoo!!! :) <3 Keep on doing what makes you happy! Those who mind, don't matter... and those who matter, don't mind! ;)
@Linda - She's unconventional. Not many women have full back tattoos. Think hard now, it'll come to you.
Absolutely nothing gives people the right to threaten her, but when it comes to just making comments, even if they are stupid hateful comments, people are still allowed to do it when it's a public campaign like this. People are free to be dumb on the internet on public posts. If it was her personal page it would be different. But it takes a special kind of stupid with no life to go out of their way to threaten someone for doing their job (since it's a campaign, so obviously posing like this wasn't even just her idea).
humans have always been judgemental and compartmentalizing, it what kept us alive, allowing use to determine friend from foe. the problem now is that we developed a means of communication that connects everyone together, but also allows everyone to feel anonymous. This break down many human social barriers that would otherwise kick in and drive people to internalize their personal thought. But in this new form of communication, social media, no such barriers exist and so the unconscious mind of humanity comes spilling out with all it's wonders and woes.
very true

It happened when you caller people haters for being turned off by hairy legs. It's not a feminist or a cultural issue; it's simple revulsion, not an earth-shattering crisis demanding a paradigm shift.

Its not just a pic posted on social media, its a international brand advertising, This ads take out the brand image. We dont even publish this ads on our any media.
Women have body hair. Get over it, guys.
Beautiful In Every Aspect - Who are We To Judge Her? Loved Those hairy Legs and Hairy Pits, Truly Natural and Beautiful. The Cosmetic Industry Has Brainwashed Society To Be Hair Free For Their Profits, Sad Indeed. She Is Beautiful and Natural The Way She is and I Respect Her For That.
"Who are We To Judge Her?" Uh....it's a fashion ad. The entire purpose of it is for judging. You think she was chosen by accident? You think any model is ever chosen by accident? The art direction is very purposeful because it's specifically trying to create an image. That's literally the point of an advertisement.
Valefar I'm not sure if it entirely fails to attract people attention - you do pay attention to the model's leg because of the hair, don't you? 2nd thing you will look at is probably her feet and adveritsed shoes so I don't think those hairy legs entirely distract form product.
When the advertisement distracts from the product, the advertisement fails to sell the product. This advertisement is an epic fail.

You mean in Russia, little 'bot?
People have been removing hair since the ancient Egyptians, it fluctuates with the times. Don't understand the rape threats against this poor woman as she has made a decision on what to do to her own body hair.
It doesn't even make sense, I mean, "I think you're gross and look like a monkey, not a girl, so I'm going to sexually assault you"... What the hell?
they are closet pervs
I don't understand why people feel the need to berate her. If you don't find her attractive or compelling, just move along.
WTF with the toilet paper? Is she on the toilet? THAT is what's gross.
OMG! Get over it! lolol She's making a statement! lolol Everyone goes to the toilet, like everyone has body hair! lolol... We actually don't know for sure if she's there or not... who knows, those toilet papers might just be props lolol... Either way, it's a statement that, imho, says to get over yourself coz everyone has hair and everyone goes to the toilet! It's both natural to do so! lolol... My goodness, so many people with so many taboos! lolol...
wait toilet paper sorry I was too focused on her tits (>_O)
Well the campaign is working... We're all taking about it. A marketing guy somewhere earned his paycheck this week.
What are we talking about? The product or the model? marketing fail.
I love that outfit!!! AND I think its perfectly fine and VERY much healthier to let our body hair grow as it is supposed to!
I think she's fabulous! Let's get rid of the misconception that women should not have any body hair. It's stupid. If women want to shave, fine, just like men. But we shouldn't be shamed and mocked if we choose not to.
Men are in the same boat. Try having a monobrow or hairy nuts or chest or even neck, for that matter. Men get told to groom much of their hair too. We're taught that hairy backs are gross. We get told to keep a clean torso, and women get told to keep clean underarms and extremities. It's not that different, to be honest. Women seriously need to calm down with this double standard stuff. Men are far more brutal with the comments, but the expectations really aren't that different for the sexes as far as hair is concerned.
Really it's much the same? Funny how men's grooming isn't anywhere near as lucrative an industry. Also the differences in responses to it are not some small thing. A woman not being into your back hair is not even in the same universe as being threatened with rape. You really need to "calm down" with the false equivalencies.
You shouldn't be ashamed or mocked, that's true. Just be prepared to not get any dates.
STFU Valefar. You say she doesn't deserve to be ashamed or mocked, yet you say she should be prepared to not get any dates?! I think this meme that I made, is for you: FFSSOMEHUM...2e0e42.jpg
Now I do honestly favor smooth skin instead of prickly skin, but that's only a personal opinion. There is no need to cause an uproar about it.
I love how she gets all the flack for the ads. Like the photographer didn't know? Adidas didn't realize when they published the ads?
My God, the drama over some body hair. -_- And how disturbing that there are people out there who threaten rape just because a pretty girl is (very mildly) going against some beauty ideals.
Shave or don't shave, but be comfortable with who you are! That's it. Be comfortable with you! 😀
My 21 year old daughter doesn't shave, I like to do my legs and armpits. Whatever the individual is comfortable with. I don't care if I see a woman in a dress with hairy legs. It's got nothing to do with me.
I personally prefer to wax/shave my leg and armpit hair, but i am all for women deciding their own fate of their leg hair. Honestly, why does it bother men so much? Do we complain about their armpit and leg hair and make them shave? No, so there shouldn't be such a problem for women.
Beautiful proud unapologetic woman - I dig it!
At the end of the day, it's just a hair.
People have hair, seriously, get over it
It's beyond hilarious that we're at a point where we get shocked by this. That's a sign of being brainwashed. I won't lie seeing a woman's hairy armpits makes me squirm a bit but I know that it's MY problem.
This ad campaign is fine, but the dress and the running shoes have nothing to do with each other. Kind of opposite things.
I m a girl with very hairy legs x3 I get weird looks all da time so go her!
Same here. I've been told to shave my legs before, but I don't like to..
All of these hurtful comments about hairs are making me sick.
It is wonderful to see images of women that look like women instead of an imaginary thing that does not exist.
Yes, she looks like a woman; a woman with neanderthal legs and a tribble under each arm. It sends a message that she might not be up to speed on other aspects of personal hygiene.
Hey Adias, wanna really “redefine beauty”? Try putting women, body hair or no, in poses that aren't meant to subconsciously say, "I'm a woman, therefore a sex object, come have a look under my clothes". Sigh.
Soooo, they’re saying that girls that don’t shave their legs are disgusting Neanderthals? I don’t shave my legs! Why do we even need to shave? WHY ARE THE WORLDS WOMAN STANDARDS SO CRUEL?!?!??
I don't get it either. Really, it's healthier to not shave.
We have body hair FOR A REASON, shaving is a cultural thing but is unhealthy on the long run, it exposes your skin to bacteria, and the hair is there to protect your skin from the environment, it might look "good" according to society's standards but is not natural nor healthy.
Lol you don't get the crabs if you don't go having intercourse with every nasty humanlike being that stands in front of you hahaha just be clean dude!!!
You might change your tune after you get the crabs.
Well done for finding the ONE SINGLE THING that shaving ones pubes is beneficial to the health among the multitude of damaging things. *slow clap*
As a REAL man I prefer to be with a woman that feels confident and comfortable in her own skin, this only shows she doesn't give a f*#ck and a lot of self esteem. The guys complaining are just kids, real men likes real women.
You're still framing what a woman does with her own body in relation to what some man she's never met prefers. You might think it's the opposite of sexism to say you prefer women with body hair/no make up/on the heavy side or whatever it is, but it's really not.
To all the people (eh-hem, men) whose comments were published in this article, please learn how to write before you judge someone. Your ignorant judging and poor writing skills show just how uneducated you are. Also, if a male wants to rape a woman for having hairy legs (because it reminds him of a man) you're a repressed POS. Get out of the closet. Your sex life will be healthier.
Newsflash: it's her body and she is the only person who gets to be in control of that body. She isn't even all that hairy, it's barely noticeable! Many of us female identifying humans have way more fur than that.
I want every man who said something negative about this model to stand and roll up their pant legs. Then tell me about ugly leg hair.
Okay, I just did it and her leg hair is still repulsive, so your test doesn't work.
Was yours more attractive? At least hers is blond. But you don't have to like it. Turn the page. No one cares.
Put your hands up if you shave in winter, or don’t shave as much or till we have to go out, we are born with hair every where. WTF, are people so socially stero typed, brain washed on how we are suppose to look REALLY STOP BEING SHEEP 🐑
Would a man be considered AS "brave" and "courageous" if he were to shave his legs?
A lot of men actually do shave and wax their legs, armpits, torso, and back... And there's no body shaming there... coz there's respect for one's personal choice for doing so! It's not brave nor courageous... it just is a personal choice...
What I noticed is that all the hate comments appear to have male names....
It's summer here and now I don't want to shave my legs so that I can see the disgusted looks men will give me as they walk past with hairy forests covering their legs, arms, backs, shoulders, chests, ass crack, snail trail and faces. We are decedents from apes, we are gonna be hairy.
how cute. they think that's hairy...wait till they see mine.
"Swedish Model Gets Criticized Because Of Hairy Legs In Adidas Campaign, And The Comments Are Too Horrible To Read" but we're going to post them for you anyway.
oh my god. calling a woman a monkey, disgusting, classes just because of some leg hair? it's these people who have no class. There are many countries all over the globe who have women that do not shave. Who are we to say our beauty standards are the "only" way? A happy woman. that is what's beautiful.
They are afraid of some hairs? They must have a bad childhood with evil hairmonsters under their beds. Nobody telled them about real women, right? Poor darlings.
Stupid add. How can anyone run in a stupid corset ?
Another option: stop allowing comments for every fart on the internet. People with hardly any brain can give opinions these days, with a certrain mr. Trump as the sad leader of todays troll army... It’s time to go back to the basics....
Hey. Leg hair isn't the prettiest thing in the world, but it's HER choice. No one should be judging her for HER OWN decision. It's not fair for her. I don't shave my legs, and I would hate to be judged so savagely for it.
It wasn't HER decision, it was the photographer's decision to choose her because he wanted you to see hairy legs. He USED her.
Thank you Adidas for this ad, absolutely love the fact of pointing out that women too have body hair and that shaving, waxing, etc. is optional, it has nothing to do with feminity!
Maybe, maybe not. Men are like apes anyway. Women distinguish themselves when they do things to place themselves above apes...such as shaving their legs and pits. Men do the same when they shave their whiskers. It's about good grooming and an appearance that displays care about good hygiene and nothing to do with femininity or masculinity.
I don't care, we're all different. If we're going to mock person for being different, let's start with people who are hiding behind a PC screen and posting stupid comments about someones fuc* leg hair. I'm sure those people have some personal and physical frustrations.

Whatever Anna, just shut up and shave it.
Whatever John, just shut up and suck a tail pipe
to be a blond girl has a lot of hair on her legs. for the rest if a person wants to or does not want to deplete they are his own. I think every woman should be free to decide how to behave with her hair. I chose to wipe my legs off, because they bore me with socks, but my armpits never saw them in wax and I never felt embarrassed about my hair. we must stop making us conditional on the dictates of fashion, showing us these beautiful creatures without a wrinkle, without a bunch of cellulite, without a gram of fat, with the bones in evidence, capellilucents and sorted in any situation, and not even a hair on the perfectly smooth body. they have nothing human. they look like the Venusians of Captain Harlock.
I do see why women like to shave their legs, though. I did it once for a costume, and it was great. If it was quick and easy, I might still be shaving them.
Exactly, though, some women don't shave their legs because it's NOT quick and easy and they'd rather just do without it. Comes down to the same thing :)
Why... why does society need to think just because someone doesn't shave they are disgusting.
as a man of northern european desent and a man with an open and free thinking mind, i have to say, shame on you sad pathetic abusive tiny minded excuses for so called men and some women , this woman like all women is her own person if she wishes to shave any part of her body or not, thats her business and only her business, the only disgusting thing is that some men women and boys should feel they have the right to be so obnoxious offensive and stupid,
As a straight male who would consider himself a feminist, i hate the fact that i find this a bit disgusting, maybe society has conditioned me to automatically think leg hair on woman is nasty, if my wife wanted to grow her leg hair i would ask her (maybe for my own selfish reasons) to absolutely not, i wouldn't want to see her with hairy legs, i would find it pretty gross, thats just the truth.
We are animals, after all. We WILL have body hair. No matter whatever people think. Maybe its not that appealing to our eyes as we are taught to be feminine and not have a single hair on our body, but woah, its just hair like on your head. Your head also has a brain. Please use that, haters. Thanks. :))
I find it sad that so many people would condemn a girl for something that women have only done for around 100 years. For thousands of years no one even thought about women having hairy legs or armpits. It was as normal as women having hair on their heads! Then some idiot decided that maybe it would be better if women didn't have hairy legs and we've been slaves to society's expectations ever since. I wonder how men would cope if suddenly it was disgusting for men to have hairy legs?????
Now, this just shows how scary the world has become. I mean, just because this woman had hairy legs and stuff doesn't mean that people already have that "right" to ridicule and slander her. Just what is wrong with today's society? I know that humans have already set that standard but, why would some of us even bother insulting this model? It was her own choice, and the least thing that we could do is respect it. It's not like she's a murderer when she has a hairy leg. And by the way, it's normal for women (not just for men) to be "hairy." You know what's not normal? Being disrespectful of other people's innocent choice.
She rocks! I think is is ridiculous that people have an adverse reaction to natural body hair. It wasn't until the 1920-30's that any women shaved their underarms. Just look at the beautiful picture of women in their strapless dresses with sexy underarm hair. It was considered sexy! Then some marketing ploy to get them to buy products changed all that and people fell for it. Now it seems normal. Also it cracks me up that someone said this was against "european values" as europeans didn't follow american lead and shave until fairly recently. When I was a young women there in the 90's people thought I was strange for shaving! Also, why is it fair that women are pressured to take such painstaking efforts to be "presentable" to this male-driven societal notion that women should be hairless and flawless! I mean , really! Shaving, dieting, wearing make-up and even more invasive procedures are just a ridiculous burden. Just let people be their natural selves already!
she rocks! what a random societal pressure to shave. It was not until the 1920-30's that any women shaved their armpits - it was an american marketing thing to get them to buy products. Just look at the pics of women in the 20's in their fancy sleeveless dresses and hairy sexy armpits. It was considered sexy. And it cracks me up that someone referred to "european values" because women in europe did not follow american hairlessness on arms and legs until fairly recently. It is ridiculous to think women should have to go through such pains and efforts for male opinions: shaving, dieting, putting on makeup, .... just let people be naturally themselves already!
I have a hard time believing that anyone would have such negative responses to a natural thing! It's the same people that thing breastfeeding is sexual. Sickos...
Omg she has hair!!! 😱😱 We must freak out and run like hell!! 🙄
Do you see how most of the hate is coming from men... shame... Anyways, fools... it's just hair. It's a wonder how men can only accept hair when its in places they enjoy... Our choices are ours to makes...
I wouldn't even notice the hairy legs without those high contrast stop pictures! It feels so odd to me that they are a big thing for so many people, and i really feel like i don't want to live on the same planet as these idiotic scumbags that has to tell their outdated opinions.
Tbc i don't like hair on my body. I just like it when everything is smooth, i don't know... it just bothers me. It bothers me on MY BODY!!! That doesn't mean that everyone else should feel the same as I do. If you like your body hair. Go on then, don't shave it. It is hair, it is natural and no one should feel obliged to remove it. I don't get why people keep freaking out about that. Why can't a woman be hairy? Seems to be ok with men, so why all the fuss?? Stop hating, start loving <3
*tbh
I quit shaving my legs and arm pits on gradating from High school (1975). I felt it was a form of self mutilation which forced women to remain prepubescent i.e. childlike. Braizilliian even more so.
The outrage was of a magnitude one would expect from Islamic fundamentalists, sans the stones in hands. It's terrifying, given how it was about something quite innocuous and funny.
that's ok
It's nobody's f*****g business but hers!
Guess what, women are humans, (I know! Crazy right!?) and humans have hair on their bodies! WHY is this concept so hard to grasp?? It's completely natural and NORMAL to have body hair!
I think that every male who has written insults should think on - both males and females have body hair - if the sight of said body hair offends some males so much in females, then maybe those males aught to remove all their body hair too - have you ever thought that this may offensive to females when you wear shorts and remove your tops - this is a world of equality - it's natural in both sexes and we all have the right to make choices - remember though one should practice what one preaches!!
Women have body hair, not a big deal and no one should be shamed for it.
hey body hair is beautiful & one day like eyebrow hair will become popular
I understand some people have what they like and don't like, but these cruel words aimed at this young girl are far too extreme to be that simple. The viciousness behind them, cursing at her, serve to expose the fear within these individuals. Clearly they feel they need someone to dig at because they're unhappy and frightened.
haha. at the least, she could have the same colour hair all over & matching :-D
I don't think it's such a big deal. This is her choice, let her be herself! Women have natural body hair; so prefer to remove it, some do not. I think it's completely up to the individual. With all the "love yourself for who you are, wear what you want" type things that are happening now-a-days, I'm surprised there were so many negative responses. "That's disgusting". It isn't your place to tell her how she should look, and she should not have to feel like she must look as your definition of attractive. Her decisions don't revolve around you. More and more women are rising up against mens' ideals of attractive or beautiful; more 'curvy' girls are rocking cropped tops and bikinis, when once, such movements were considered gross, now the ladies doing this are 'brave'. How is Arvida Byström's stand so different? This is one young lady, doing one simple thing: not shaving. The media has completely blown up about this, and it baffles me as to why. Let Miss Byström do what she wants.
I had a German family move into our neighborhood several years ago. They became like family to us. When they first came I noticed that she did not shave her underarms. I said nothing. They lived here for several years and then moved to another city in our state. He worked for a German company that had a factories here in America. One day I finally noticed she had started shaving. I don't know when she started because to me it wasn't important. They are good people and that's all I cared about. We are still in touch even though they moved back to Germany years ago. They come to visit whenever he's sent here for whatever reason. If your relationship with someone depends on whether or not they shave their legs or underarms then you are a narrow minded person that I would not want to meet. Not all cultures believe that a woman's body is to look like it did when she was born. God gave us hair for a reason!
Question: So a woman with blonde hair has black leg hair? I just thought it would all be lighter. Not blonde maybe, but lighter. Excuse my ignorance as you know a lot of woman shave and I really don't know.
Generally pubic hair, which despite general belief is any hair that only appears at/post puberty, is darker than hair on your head. Weirdly the exception is male facial hair which is often red or reddish even if a guy has dark hair.
The hair on my head is a medium brown. My underarm hair is reddish, my arm hair is a dark blonde, my leg hair and eyebrows are black. All of it is natural.
Leg hair aside, the styling for this shoot is awful. And the shoes are ugly.
Didn't notice the hair as much as the nip showing. Does that make me shallow....? I'm sure SOMEONE will say 'everyone has nipples so get over it' !!
Whats that dress and where can I get it????
She's beautiful
:) thats a good thing, because once you shaved/plucked or do whatever to deal with removing those hairs on parts of your body, i.e. armpits and legs; you'll deal with them again and again, your entire life. but kudos to her.
She's the spitting image of Romola Garai.
She's gorgeous! I respect her decision of not waxing... But I'm into waxed girls :)
Women have hair. People need to stop being shallow and immature about a naturally occurring reality. People need to do what they want to their own body hair and stop bitching about other people and what they do or do not do. Kudos to her and Adidas.
I think the woman is beautiful and sexy and she is just the way God made her. The guys that put her down should probably do some reading and get smart, idiots.
The guys who are disgusted by this are also the guys who would love to have the chance to date this woman. Or any woman.
The comments are making me feel weird for saying this, even though I actually am a girl who usually can't be bothered to shave her legs, but I do feel she'd look much...better with shaved leg hair =x Plus it's kind of a crazy contrast between how neatly cut her head hair is and how perfect her makeup and all and then the rest. It just kind of looks very odd to me. Obviously I don't think that justifies the flatout insults people are blindly throwing at her but frankly I don't think it deserved the blind praise people are giving her here either. She has the right to be herself and people have the right to not like it, neither of those is wrong as long as everyone is civil to each other. Also, the armpits hair bothers me quite a bit actually, when you don't shave it it appears to accumulate the smell and then it's that much harder to stay nice, clean and fresh smelling, especially in hot weather=x And then afaik models work in those extremely hot bright lights...this is bothering me>.<
I think she's beautiful whether she shaves or not.
Wow...just...wow...the amount of stupidity and retarded comments is just unbelievable.
I remember being bullied for having hair on my legs back when I was 12 or 13, and it wasn't even much for heck's sake! I got my own back on him though when I got sick of his crap one day, by locking him outside the classroom that overlooked the chapel roof. It was an Anglican Prep School. Never bullied me again lol.
It's a choice but, I have a sick feeling from seeing it.
To horrible to read. Let's read them. :/
Half of them can't spell...😂😂😂
I think she's adorable. The fuzzy and the big shoes. She has this fairy-hobbit-princess thing going, which is so much better than the usual petite, hairless, ordinary clones
Got ya. I think they're absolutely beautiful however this is a silly life stealing thing to do because she's getting the piss taken out of her to sell razors and therefore giving her life to the company and to money and so on . So if she was suffering for good causes she would be a lot happier I think that changing the world for the better is better an hopefully someone tells her that this is the case.
Simple theory (as OLD as the hills), and it goes like this: To each his or her own. Get it? Good.
Guys should try getting there legs etc waxed and then we'll see whose complaining. Men should honeslty grow up its abit of hair for goodness sake, don't hate because shes able to grow more hair on her legs than you can on your entire face 🙃🙃
I am disgusted by the reaction to this remarkable and brave woman who has disregarded the ridiculous rules for women. I feel immense happiness for her to be able to do this, she has no shame because she should not have to feel ashamed for not wanting to put BLADES TO HER SKIN just to feel beautiful! What a wonderful add! The other adds alongside this are also really great! We need to accept ourselves and our bodies for what they are. More importantly we need to learn to accept others choices! I accept women who want to shave everything, women who shave a little and women who do not shave at all! Same to men! If you are happy in your own skin as you like it then you have accomplished a truly great thing!
I support women who do not want to shave their body. Simply because who cares? What people do with their body is not my business.
* toolbags uncomfortable haha
How does the length of your natural body hair affect any of us in any way... grow it...braid it...and make close minded toolbars
I think it about time we demanded that men shave all of their body hair off! What appalling responses on here- so men honestly how would you feel if women revolted and said get it off!! (the hair that is!!)
While yes the armpit hair does look nasty and the leg hair doesn't look great I do not understand why people would be sending threats exc over it. We've all made style choices that didn't look good and that is up to us regarding haircuts, clothing styles exc. On a side note putting it in an add campaign does open it up for public commentary so people also should not get upset about people simply sharing their view of it looks good or not.
I find it amazing that so many people are attacking the girl. It's an ad, she's been paid to be 'original' i.e. 'different'. It's not real people! But body hair in women and men IS real and whether you have it or not is up to you and whether someone else likes it or not is up to them. End of story.
WOW... some really hateful folks commenting above. We are mammals, we have hair on our bodies. Not everyone is brainwashed into thinking that looking like a skinned pig is the perfect way to be. I grew up in a household where I was taught to find the beauty in everyone. My mom had a few "hippy friends" that didn't believe in shaving but they were still very pretty young women but we are all so brainwashed that when we see a woman with unshaven legs or underarms we think "WOW, REALLY?" but it's good to remind yourself that not everyone's culture or mind set is about those things. If you brush your teeth, clean your skin and keep your hair nice then that's good enough for me.
This won't make me popular, but I just don't care to see leg or pit hair on ladies. Of course that is just my opinion and the fact that they are showing this model with hair is their business. It sure doesnt make me want to buy the shoes though and isn't that the purpose of these ads? Is this ad just for shock value? I mean we all are talking about it, but that still doesn't make me want to buy those shoes.
monkey is who ever criticize her!! Body hair is natural and removal is the question of choice. Hairless woman body is a product of sick minds, gay and pedophiles at the first place
Who are any of us to judge her? What she does or doesn't do with her body is none of my business.
The people that sent mean comments to her are aholes, but there is nothing at all wrong with people saying they don't like the looks of hairy legs on women. I'm a man with a beard. When I first stopped shaving I got a lot of comments from people, mostly women, who said they didn't like the beard and I should shave. That was their opinion and they were entitled to it. Same thing with this.
That doesn't bother me at all... I have hairy legs and no one sayed anything about them...
I just thought it was funny she was grabbing toilet paper lol
I never shave my legs. Not only is it a pain in the arse, the older i get the less hair grows. Why is it a requirement? I love being natural and beautiful. All of the men in my life love it
She has a right to choose and people have a right to dislike her choice.
what a difference between developed countrys like sweden and the dark-age-djungles of usa or northern africa f.e..she can do and say what she want.end of discussion.
hey body hair is beautiful & one day will become popular like eyebrow hair
Actually to shave or not to shave should be every woman's choice, not a social requirement. I just thought her body hair was too dark for a natural blonde.
F*cking awful and disgusting. It's normal for hair to grow there and if you're simple minded enough to comment about how "gross" it is, I suggest you find her home address and send her a monthly supply of razors and other shaving items. If it's really that important to you, that shouldn't be hard to do
Every*
everyone has body hair grow up cuz eve th3 one will be like that don't hate cuz the bible says don't judge and if u judge you get PUNISHED so i don't know how these hoes are hating so they are the ugly ones she will end up rich she's proud
This is the way that God made women. Shaving is a very modern fashion.
I saw a comment saying that people who are attracted to women that don't shave are pervs. So, having a woman shave all of her natural body hair so that she looks like a little child isn't perverted?
I don't mind a woman who doesn't shave the rest of her body as long as she shaves her pudendum (if needed). There are more than a few practical reasons for doing this, plus that hair cover evolved before humans invented underwear.
Go ahead and shave your pudendum if you'd like, but leave mine alone.
I love it! I love her for being so real!! I wish I could be so brave! 💕
As a former “wolf”, this is an inspiration to me. My mother started my hair removal the minute a$$holes started teasing/insulting me about it, not realizing what that did to my self esteem. My legs look like hers most times and I’m proud of that.
Sorry. I saw my typos and errors too late to correct them. That's what sometimes happens when you start shifting words and lines around.
There is really something wrong with MEN. Such horrible creatures! So full of anger and violence. No bueno!
She is a natural beauty and because she does not do as others do makes her a leader to be admired
At first my knee jerk reaction was, that is really gross, but I am also really impressed she was brave enough to do such a thing, and body hair is normal. I think i'll still shave though ;)
Good lord people just relax people can think what they want and that won't change
it's incredibly shallow for anyone to think that it's a crime for a woman to not shave all of your body hair. to quote the late John Lennon "Woman is the slave of the world". ("slave" replacing another word) In my words. The worlds thoughts and policies seem to be in retrograde. We're either stagnant or in reverse as of late. How did this happen? racism, sexism and more.
I'd kiss her in public sober .
People stop down voting just because you disagree. Instead make statements that show the fault in someone's statement. Unless of course they are just being out right obnoxious, rude, vulgar. That way we can discuss ideas from all perspectives. As it stands we just end up with a bunch of one way discussions by the most popular views. I think this site has a diverse group of idiots, intelligence, and diverse insight that I love to see. That is a lot harder when we use down votes to cause their statements to go hidden.
To each their own. But you know what is too stinkin' cute?!? Those little apricots wearing panties on her instagram, awwwwww ;)
yeah Antony there no law prevent them from saying what they want but that still doesn't change the fact that what they say have consequences and if you say something that comes across insulting don't be surprised when they get mad and retaliate, cause guess what the same law that gives you the freedom to insult people give them the freedom to call you out on it
Who gives a shit.
This isnt anything we should even be having an opinion about. Love this page, but c'mon. #trivial
This is my view on this shit. People are all supportive of girls getting dicks surgically fused to them (transgender) yet people are going to insult a woman with leg hair? REALLY?!?! the fuck is wrong with society
I dont like it - but its her body, her choice...
Yes if a girl wants to grow her leg hair that should be fine! but what bothers me is how some people like to do things like this for attention 😒
Surely the removal of hair is the attention seeking behaviour if anything (it's not but I'm running with your argument) over doing NOTHING.
Why are people discussing this lol. Hang up the washing or do the dishes or something.
Why are you?
Allthough I prefer shaved legs and arm pits on women (and arm pits on men too for that matter!), I find the way people reacted to the campaign far more shocking than than the actual image. Whether she decides to shave or not, is absolutely none of anyone's business! As far as the campaign is concerned, I sincerely hope that adidas chose her because they truely believe in women who don't conform to the norm and not because they knew it would cause an outrage if they showed a pretty young woman with unshaved legs and bring them the publicity they wanted/needed. Should that be the case, that girl would have been exploited same as any other young model who came before her and would do absolutely nothing for feminism!
Those comments are sickening! I thought people were judgemental, but blimey, some real hate has been spewed there! If you're ever confused about something like this, just imagine being alien observer. An alien observer would assume that leg hair was some kind of contagious disease, judging from the responses, when it is in fact a perfectly healthy and normal part of the human body.
everyone has right to be what she / he wants, our judgement is so silly, who gives a fuck?
just marketing
It should be viewed as a choice, like a hairstyle for the head. Pick what you like. I prefer to be fur-free but she's a very pretty girl and should be able to choose for herself. Only she and her partner should care about it.
I'm mostly just perplexed about why they wanted pictures with toilet paper in them?
It is nice to see women look like women instead of an imaginary thing that does not really exist
Yuck. Yeti legs.
She should have shaved especially her hairy armpits !!
she can do whatever she wants with her body. but when you display your body for everyone to see, there will be comments. I can't believe she didn't know this will happen. aaand... you can't criticise anything these days - even in a polite manner - because you're always "a hater" and "a body shamer"... FOR ME (my opinion only) this is not pleasant to look at, this whole photoshoot is "nasty" (not the model fault though).
