Genius Student Invents “Mobile Airbag” That Deploys When You Drop Your Phone, Tries It With His Phone
This gadget hasn’t hit the shelves yet but it’s already getting great reviews. Philip Frenzel, a student at Aalen University in Germany, designed ADCASE, a genius phone case that deploys an airbag as soon as you drop your device. The invention has already won Frenzel the top award from the German Society for Mechatronics, which considered projects from students all over the country.
“Three years ago, Philip dropped his brand new iPhone,” Peter, a spokesperson for ADCASE told Bored Panda. “The screen cracked thousand times. After that he bought a bunch of conventional phone cases to protect his new phone. But the protection didn’t satisfy him at all.”
At first, Frenzel created an activation mechanism with sensors that detect when the phone is in free fall. But what does it activate? He initially thought of designing an actual airbag on the phone, that and a foam-based alternative, however these designs didn’t prove to be practical. Eventually, instead of something soft, Frenzel settled on something firm. Springs.
In total, it Philip and his team took about two and a half years to create the device. They plan to make it compatible with the newest iPhones, starting from the iPhone 6. To fund the project, they are preparing a Kickstarter campaign that should begin in July.

Here’s what most of our phones end up looking like after we drop them
This engineering student, however, has created a device that will help you forget broken screens
He 3d-printed its parts
After carefully planning every little detail
When a phone is dropped, the device acts as an airbag, allowing it to safely reach the ground
Here’s how it looks once deployed
The case attaches to the back of the phone without compromising its aesthetic
Watch the full video to see how it works
Here’s what people had to say about the device
Where was the phone on the first picture dropped from? The Empire state building?
Only works if you drop it onto a flat surface. If it lands on a rock or any thing else it isn't going to be of any use.
I think the idea is fantastic. This is just the first version, so there's plenty of time to keep developing it. After all, the first iPhone can do nothing compared to its latest version. I'm betting this will be the same way.
Anyone else originally read the article title in a sarcastic tone?
I just want a case that will hang round my neck - the number of times my phone has fallen out of my clothing- and broken -or have changed clothes and left it in a pocket - or swapped handbags and put it in the wrong one. Not to mention the time wasted scouring the house for it
I dropped my phone couple times on any kind of surfaces (marble, concrete, gravels, toilet sink). It's still badass, just little dents.
I have a rubberized $2 iPhone cover from eBay that sticks up about 2mm around the edges, proud of my screen. I've dropped my phone dozens of times without a break. I don't get how so many people destroy every phone they have.
My old LG survived a motorcycle accident without a scratch and with only one film as protection. I don't wanna try it with my current LG, though. My friend's Samsung, on the other hand, didn't survive falling from her bed. I'm not sure about iPhones, but I noticed Samsungs tend to have awsome technology, yet fragile screens. LGs, so far, are being pretty strong, but I'm also being extra careful by default.
Load More Replies...Yeah, the rubber cover solves the issue. Why he invented the 8 legs instead?
Load More Replies..."All three of us were having dinner together", stated Apple, Samsung, and LG after hearing about the murder of the inventor of the mobile airbag.
How does it work if dropped on the phone's corner? That's why mine broke.
Ooh, if that went off while you had your phone on your ear, that would NOT be fun
They need to make an airbag deploy from the phone's surface for all the idiots walking around running into s**t! People - don't ignore the real world- it's the real world. Smile on- pass it on...DeeLite
Why do so many people have problems with their phones shattering when they drop them? I've had two LG smart phones and I was always dropping them on hard surfaces even. Still worked fine every time. Sometimes they would fall so hard the back of the phone would pop off and all I had to do was put it back together and it was good as new...with a few dents. LGs are so underrated.
what if it accidentally opens when it's in your pocket? ur phone will never leave your leg. (btw, how do you close the thing after it's deployed)
you know when you were younger and you'd have your mittens attached through a string through the sleeves of your coat? just do that with your mobile phone.
It would be really expensive though wouldn't it? I know it's 3D printed but it is still a new design Thoughts?
I am think he is using gyroscope features of the phone to get this too deploy
It means when no battery then thats it, it won't work
Load More Replies...I think it really only works if the phone is dropping vertically in that one direction. Otherwise the flaps probably won't hold up if it is moving in 2 directions at once. But still a neat thing.
Load More Replies...Good thing he made a video so when Samsung and Apple steal his idea, he can take them to court.
Not necessarily. If there is no patent, they can steal his idea without even blinking. Intellectual property never stopped them anyway...
