Pretty much everyone knows the feeling of dealing with people who have no idea what your profession is actually all about. Sometimes it even becomes frustrating to explain the nuances of your job over and over again. But if people will pay attention to this post, many won't have to do it ever again.
Recently, Portland-based icon designer Louie Mantia started a very informative Twitter thread, asking people, "What's something that seems obvious within your profession, but the general public seems to misunderstand?" Many people rushed to debunk the myths surrounding their professions, and their responses are both hilarious and eye-opening.
"I was inspired to ask that question because I too have felt like there are misconceptions about what I do," Mantia told Bored Panda. "Earlier that day, I posted about best practices in app icon design, and was met with a lot of pushback. I realized a lot of others probably feel the same way about their own jobs."
"I remember when I visited Buckingham Palace a few years back, there was an insane amount of people," Mantia added. "The police officers had to continually keep their cool while telling different people to stay in a certain area. They couldn’t get mad at them because every time they had to say it was to a different person." He thinks a lot of people can relate to that. "They might have to repeat something to [their] customer, but that customer doesn’t have the knowledge or experience about the other side that often. They need a short explanation."
Mantia thinks there are many reasons why such misunderstandings are common, but pop culture is the big one. "Hospital shows portray hospital jobs inaccurately. Law shows do the same. And any show that has ever shown someone pounding away at a keyboard has contributed to some incorrect views of hacking or programming," he said. "TV and movies can do a lot of damage in this regard. For example, Lee Unkrich at Pixar noted that voices are recorded before the animation. But because of Mrs. Doubtfire’s opening scene with Robin Williams recording a cartoon character’s voice after the animation was finished, a lot of people now believe that’s the way it’s done."

Yes yes yes!!! I was going to add this if it wasn't here!! I'm a medical social worker. I work in a hospital and some patients have a terrified look when I say I'm a social worker. I work for a hospital not child protective services. It blows my mind that the general public has no idea how many different kinds of social workers there actually are.

Sorry Debbie, you kind of do. I know I'll get down voted, but you aren't mixing in a compounding pharmacy or working in a hospital, you are a pill counter and a consultant at the checkout window. And telling people on which aisle the cough syrup is at.

The problem is the health care system for humans and non humans alike in the USA. I have lived in first world and third world countries. And only in the US are the costs the way they are. Countries with both free public (100% free) and non free private care, the latter is still 90% less than if you do have insurance in the US. For pet care, procedures and minimal routine care is not supposed to break the bank. And don't get me started on dental care. All you need to do is talk to others who have lived in countries that actually provide a standard of health care that is decent. Only in "America" there are horror stories of how unaffordable getting sick is.

Let's also agree, that by definition, English is the most "tainted" language in the Solar system. It is the most-spoken second-langauge by a huuuuuge margin. Germanic-languages aside, English is poorly understood, both grammatically and particularly, in tone by almost every other language. Slang lives outside the grammar and diction, and cannot be used to compare "right or wrong use" of English. The purpose of grammar, diction, and tone, (in any language) it to make sure the thoughts and feelings expressed in your mind, are verbally communicated as close as possible in your words. Less ambiguity, and a closer understanding of what the mind and heart are attempting to express.

Tipping is not optional - in the US! In other countries it is. The system is very unfair in the US.
Right, the system should be fixed so that tipping is optional. If it's not optional then it's not a "tip", rather it's much closer to an undisclosed service charge.
Load More Replies...Disagree with the statement!! Tipping IS optional and I'll tip based on the service I receive. Any waiter/waitress who thinks it's mandatory needs a reality check.
Tipping is not optional: yes it is, what law would I be breaking if I did not not tip? The fact that restaurants in America expect their customers to subsidise the wages of their staff does not change this fact.
Restaurants are supposedly required to make up for lack of tipping. Good luck finding one that does.
Load More Replies...Actually, tipping is optional - by definition it is optional. I am not about to pay an extra 20% for having a drink spilled on me or other terrible service. I am VERY generous when the service is good, but I will NOT pay extra to be treated terribly.
Where i live tipping is optional and it depends 100% on how good the service was. Imo, this is the only fair deal.
As a Swede, I have never understood why the US has a system where you cant live of your vages , but absolute need tip. Its seem unlogical to me.
Your country is so weird your culture is built on being nice for money instead of pride in your work , why not just pay the staff a fair wage, no other low paid workers (call centers, shop workers, factory) get tips why should you?
Tipping should always be optional, and 15% is a lot of money, just to "give away". A lot of families have to save money for just one nice evening eating out. And they don't count in the tips. Not all people are rich and can afford a 30% tip. As a waitress, you also have a boss that pays you your monthly check. Just like everyone else with a job. I don't give the postman a tip, just because he delivers my letters. Tips should never be mandatory. You will lose a lot of customers. Doesn't mean we don't appreciate you bringing our food, we appreciate you doing your job, just as we appreciate the postman, or the grocery man, or the police officer.
You're right. Tipping should be optional, but in the US the minimum wage for wait staff is $2.13. Once taxes and the like are taken out, they usually get a few dollars from their paycheck. They literally live off of their tips. And in the US, we do consider the tip when planning a meal out. My mom always told me that "if you don't have enough money for the tip, then you don't have enough money to eat out."
Load More Replies...Tipping is optional and I don't understand why waiting staff think their customers should pay for their service AND the food when the cost of the meal should cover both. I'm in the UK and I always leave a small tip but when I was a waitress I didn't think I was entitled to a tip for doing what my boss pays me for.
Wait staff in the U.S should be paid a decent hourly rate, then"tipping" would be what it is supposed to be a bonus for service above the normal ,basic level. In most other countries(I'm Australian) expecting a tip ,for following you job description, would be considered extremely rude.
How is this not at the bottom? Tipping is definetely optional, otherwise it should be put into the price.
In the US, tipping is NOT optional: wait staff make a base wage (usually around $2.50/hr), and tips are "avaeraged in" as a wage supplement. This is BELOW minimum wage. Restaurants get by with it by claiming wait staff make more in tips than they do in wages. This isn't always true, due to differences in the economy, season, political climate, etc.
Load More Replies...Tipping is always optional. Just because you've integrated it so hard into your culture doesn't mean it's mandatory. I'll give you a tip on your service toward me, not because you expect it.
In Germany, where I'm from, you dont have to tip anybody, even though good work deserves a tip. In Japan, so I was told, tipping the waiters is considered very rude and will not be accepted. America has a crappy system for waiters. Poor fellas, I feel pitty for you.
Tipping is optional or it is a charge, a customer paying your wages under the guise of gratitude is disgusting and a disgrace that food establishments pass their employment costs on to others. It explains why fast food is so popular in the US no tips, when you go out to eat you should not be paying for another meal on top.
Tipping isn't optional, but your job is. You don't like the pay system? DO. SOMETHING. ELSE.
Easier said than done. Food service jobs are relatively easy to get and don't have high educational requirements. If the choice is between no job and no pay or a job with low pay they are going to take the job. IT. DOESN'T. MEAN. THEY. HAVE. TO. LIKE. IT.
Load More Replies...If the food is cold, it COULD be the fault of the waitress. If the food is bad, improperly prepared, or not what you ordered, that's the kitchen. Punishing the waitress is foolish, and makes you look cheap. I went to dinner recently with my husband, and I didn't like my entree. Waitress took it back & had them make me another, and I still didn't like is, so I asked her to take it back & take it off the bill. When the check came, I told my husband to tip her on the entire bill. Even though she'd removed the price of my meal, she had still brought me the meal. Twice.
Please pardon my lack of experience with tipping, I don't mean to be a*s I just don't know how the system works that well and I suck at math, also I'm not from the US
It really is all over the place: Some services are expected to be tipped at rates like 15% of the cost, like a $10 pizza delivery should see the deliveryman handed a buck and a half. Some are expected at 20-25%, like an $80 meal in a restaurant or ride in a cab should see the server or driver get a $20 bill on top of that. Others like luggage porters, bathroom attendants, or doormen, should just be handed a few dollars as there is no base charge to take a percentage from. A lot of these people are not paid enough to live without tips - in fact the US has a minimum wage just for people who are expected to be tipped that is less than a third the normal minimum wage. I would prefer the system was changed, but have little influence beyond my vote on it.
Load More Replies...Sorry, but tipping IS optional, even in the US. Don't get me wrong, most of the time I tip at least 20% because I've tried waitressing (hated it because i was awful at it). But there are some people who should either not be in that line of work or are having a bad day. Your financial issue is with the company you work for, not your customers. And worst of all, there are so many more professions these days that expect tips!
I know that is the case in the U.S., but I still find that .....(illogical, stupid, not right, etc... you fill in the word). People should get paid to do a job and not depend on what outsiders are willing to give them. If they can get a something extra for excellent service, that is something entirely different.
I thought it WAS optional in the US. I've never seen someone FORCED to leave a tip when they don't. They were never blocked at the door and not allowed to leave. There were times my sister didn't get tipped because the people were rude/didn't know any better. Her service was great.
Guess there's just more to it that I didn't know about. Learned something new.
Load More Replies...Yes it is... You cleaning the table picking up plates... is the wage that the restaurant pays you (although, after tax, not much is left) The tip, which you don't seem to understand, is gratuity for your good service. If you make the experience bad for the customer, you don't get tipped. I do agree that sometimes people can't talk to the cook and takes it out on waiters. But you are NOT entitle to a 15% tip from everyone, you EARN it.
If it's not optional the restaurant should include the percentage in each item on the menu. Of course it's optional, it's not like it's illegal to not pay tip. Also, usually no tip means that the service is bad.
Geez, clearly most people on here haven't working in the food and beverage industry. If you don't have enough money to leave a tip, you don't have enough money to eat out. It's that simple. You don't tip retail workers or mailmen because they are not paid $2.14 an hour. The hostess at a restaurant is not paid $2.14 an hour. They make at last minimum wage. Servers on the other hand may walk out of work having made far less than minimum wage because people don't tip. Often because the food takes too long (because of the kitchen), the food doesn't look like the picture (because of the kitchen), or people just don't think its necessary to tip.
Tipping is VERY optional. It was made popular in the US during the depression because restaurants couldn't actually pay their staff so they basically said, "if you want to eat, you better ask that guy for some money." Now it is just used as an excuse for businesses to underpay their staff. If we get rid of tipping we can raise the actual pay of those workers to what they are worth. Tipping is the worst practice... ever.
Tipping is an American thing often carried to extremes like when a relative visiting the U.S.A. asked a random stranger for directions to a place. He was followed and harassed for a $40 "tip" for said directions.
I have no problem with tipping unless the service is bad. Also, I have been a waitress myself and sometimes I didn't get tips and I don't have kids so I couldn't play that card.
Tipping is optional. If the menu says $1 then I can pay that. If all you have done is carry the food why would I reward You? If the food is good I can tip the cook.
In the US, tipping is optional. I almost always tip 20%. But there have been 2-3 times when I did not tip at all. And it was very definitely due to the server's performance (not food). In one case, we waited and waited for our bill out on a patio. Server never came to ask if we wanted more drinks (we did), or if we were ready for the bill (we were initially not). We just kept chatting and didn't mind TOO much. For about 45 MINUTES after our meal was done. Finally, I went inside and stood at the bar to ask for the bill. Stood for about 3-4 minutes, was ignored, and finally said, "Excuse me". Finally got the bill. The waitress was sitting at the bar the whole time I was standing patiently waiting for someone to acknowledge me. The crazy thing is we were THE ONLY TWO PEOPLE IN THE RESTAURANT THE ENTIRE TIME. The only two people. We should have just left without paying.
Personally, 100% of the tip is attitude. Most people can carry a glass, pour something from a bottle or transport a plate of food from point A to B by the time they're 12. 15% On top of the meal for the activities that I could have done myself? "Hey kids, line up and be polite!! FIsh and chips times two, there ya go you little-tykes, greet Mr chef, Schnitzel for the missus, roger that. UUPS, Mr Chef, we got an icy, icy plate, feel, yup? Fix? OK, you agree, ok yes she actually wants a plate piping-hot, I'll remember next time no, no, this plate feels a LOT warmer, Quick plate-switch?! Sweet. My steak looks a little more medium than I expected, never mind it smells divine, I'll note that next time See ya!" And off we go to the table... waiters... WHYYYYYYYYYYY???? DOOOOOO THEEEEEEYYYY EXIST?
Then next time you are at a restaurant, do all of that yourself and see how that goes.
