Guy Claiming Miss Scotland Pageant Looks ‘Too White’ Gets Shut Down With Hilarious Comments
A man who complained about the lack of diversity in Miss Scotland 2019 became the target of ridicule himself after his tweet went viral.
Iain Robertson from Glasgow took a shot at the racial makeup of the contestants by sharing a photo of them with a caption that read, “Delighted to see such a diverse lineup for Miss Scotland this year.”
“I’m friends with two of the women in the photo, they posted the photo on social media. They also agree with me that the contest lacked diversity,” Robertson told Bored Panda.
Yes, his post has accumulated over 4.6K likes. However, it has also received more than 6.2K comments, many of which criticize Iain’s interpretation of the picture.

People were unhappy that Robertson started throwing accusations without considering Scottish demographics. According to them, racism isn’t to blame for the lack of “diversity” in the Miss Scotland photo.
Scotland’s Census 2011, the most recent official study of the country’s demographics, said that 84% of Scotland’s population reported their ethnicity as ‘White: Scottish’ and a further 8% as ‘White: Other British’. Together, minority ethnic groups and white non-British groups (which include ‘White: Irish’, ‘White: Polish’, ‘White: Gypsy/ Traveller’ and ‘White: Other White’) made up 8% of the total population.
The Asian population was the largest minority ethnic group (3% of the population or 141,000 people), while the African, Caribbean or Black groups made up 1% of the population.
However, he soon became the target of ridicule himself

However, Robertson remained confident that the women shortlisted for the final did not accurately represent the diversity of Scotland—particularly Glasgow, the city he lives in and where the organization operates. “Beauty pageants are an antiquated concept as it is, and beauty is subjective, so displaying a standard of ‘beauty’ as only one type of person leaves others, especially younger women and girls, feel that they won’t be accepted as ‘beautiful’ because they don’t see anyone representing them in such contests,” he told Bored Panda. “There are beautiful women of all sizes, abilities, races (note, I didn’t mention race in the tweet), beliefs, religions that deserve a voice just as much as the women shortlisted, and I was disappointed that the organization chose to not include them in their contest. Previous years had been far more diverse.”
“In fact, the responses I received made me feel more strongly about it, largely due to the bigotry in those comments and the lack of understanding of the issues my throwaway tweet represented,” Iain continued. “The most interesting thing about it is, as you can see, my tweet doesn’t mention race at all, it’s basically a sarcastic comment about how they all look alike, however that can mean so many different things. The backlash only focused on race…”
He also thinks that these comments were largely from people who have never been to Scotland. “For example, Glasgow, our biggest city has a significant Asian demographic that has been around for decades, our communities are far more enriched with diverse cultures than these people think.”
Most Scots aren't actually white. They're really a very pale blue. (Yeah I stole that from a Scottish comedian.)
Sometimes they come back from the weekend a reddish brown shade. Not a tan, just rust.
Load More Replies...Are you sure they're Scottish? They're all tanned, a true Scot would be so pale that the light from the flash would reflect from them causing lens flair in the photo.
I am so tired of people crying racism about every single issue. Like someone said what if the representatives of other races don't want to participate. Unless you have evidence of blatant racism, keep your supposedly open minded opinion to yourself. You pointing out racism where there is none makes you the racist.
And yelling bigotry also! This constantly offended "woke" culture is exhausting.
Load More Replies...What is this diversity you speak of? As a male I take personal offence that I've never been invited as a pageant contestant. Blatant something-ism at play.
Go sign up to the Mister Scotland pageant. Yes, there is one.
Load More Replies...So tired of all of this. Diverse? There'll always be someone who says it's forced or token. Not too diverse? There'll always be someone who complains. Can't we just throw race to the side altogether? It's just so dang stupid.
Yep, if I recall the census, ethnic minorities in Scotland are 4% of the population.
Come on though -- not a single ginger? I was going to say "redhead" but IDK if non-Americans use that term -- that country has the highest percentage of gingers (13%) in the world.
I dont live in scotland but it seems in this article that some people dont know the history of black discrimination in the western media. I certainly know racist people in real life or seen them on tv. If you want to win an argument by saying your not racist or scotland is not racist then its best to put some evidence on the table, That wouldnt be hard for a non-racist to do. The lack of it here personally raises questions in my mind. Did this writer of the article pursue a bias with the quotes he/she selected? I dont know for sure. A photo of a zimbabwe contest? To show an example of a normal beauty contest? In zimbabwe for the last 40 years there has been discrimination and terrorism towards white people. These photos do not help anyone. If you dont care about my opinion or want to shut me down fine. But if you want to walk into my house in real life and convince me youre not racist then sorry the approach taken by some in the article will not be successful.
This is a good place to point out the miracle that is the United States of America. Think about the diversity here. In most places we live, usually peacefully, with people from other countries, and unconsciously incorporate their foods and customs into our own lives.
And that’s been a wonderful thing in the past. Now incorporating other food and customs is “cultural appropriation”...but only if you’re white.

It's still a beauty pageant and the standard is this tall and slim figure. I'd never have made it either because I'm too short.

Load More Replies...If this was a beauty contest in England their would be hell on and you all would be agreeing how racist it is. Seems to me Americans are racist against the British, whoops! they were many of your decedents
It's like asking for black/brunette women in Miss Argentina. We are a mix of west Europe cultures. We could easily walk in USA or any European country and nobody will ever know we are latinas, because u know, latin women are supposed to be curvy and brunette and know how to dance salsa...
I love how people get so wildly passionate about everything on the internet, but usually all in a single way. To me, the best part of this post is : "...my tweet doesn’t mention race at all, it’s basically a sarcastic comment about how they all look alike, however that can mean so many different things. The backlash only focused on race..."
Why is it that people complain of having too many white folks in any gathering but don't say a word when there are too many black ones? I'm offended!
These women aren't White enough to be genuinely Scottish!! They need to be pale enough to look like they're about to faint before they're the classic Scottish hue 😂
So, some of the women who according to him, have done nothing wrong, should be excluded just for the shake of the ''diversity''. I wonder what the criteria would be...
People are so focused on diversity that they want it everywhere without thinking if it makes sense at all. I think he made that comment without any thought and now he is trying to argue himself out instead of admitting that he just made a mistake...
and only 4 or 5 brunettes allowed to participate? for shame!!! how stupid this is!
I once asked a Scotsman if there were any black Scots. He said yes, mostly wives brought back from Africa during the war.
No clue about Scotland but for all the "Japan has Japanese!" comments used as an example, Japan has a very high rate of mixed kids especially in recent years. A lot get severely bullied and get told they are not "Japanese" because of this, some leave Japan. So while I agree most Japanese would look a certain way of "Asian", it should be remembered that there are many ways and many different looks that represent a country. (Look up Ariana Miyamoto)
I agree... It just matches the majority of the population... Well, saw-ry for that, I guess... 🤣🤣
Load More Replies...I agree with Iain Robertson's wider point. It is interesting that everyone jumped straight to race when diversity can mean a number of things.
Some examples he listed as "diversity" included religion, abilities, and beliefs. Please explain to me, since he made it very clear that he didn't mention race, how he would know this group isn't diverse. By simply looking at the photo, I haven't a clue as to their beliefs, abilities, or religions. Those were the markers he was using to represent diversity. He also mentioned size. Truthfully, I do not see what I might consider large woman, present. However, some are sitting, while others are standing. This could mean some might be short or tall. Again, possibly representing a diversity of size. Personally, I like the explanation, that these women, are the ones that chose to compete.
Load More Replies...Are those arcaic contests still around? I thought they were outdated long ago! Which woman with the least bit of selfworth would let themselves be judged like livestock nowadays??
Sorry, no, you don’t get to put down a group of women and not get called out for it. They can participate in beauty pageants if they want. They aren’t hurting you. Control your misogyny

And exactly how are the twenty-something to thirty-somethings that comprise Millennials spoiled? The college they needed to get good jobs shot up in cost exponentially more than the pay of the PT/summer jobs that helped pay for tuition for past generations -- and salaries/benefits suck in comparison to 20 years ago, meaning that they're carrying debt more crushing than their parents had. There's nothing delicate about people trying to make their lives in those conditions.
