Man Discovers A Family Of Mice Living In His Garden, Builds Them A Miniature Village

Recently, wildlife photography aficionado Simon Dell stumbled upon the family of a cute mouse running around his garden. Instead of reaching for the traps, however, he took out his tools. Dell built the mice a miniature village, and they repaid him by posing for adorable animal photography shots.

“I was out one day just taking photos of the birds in the garden and having just cut the grass I noticed something moving on the ground,” Simon told Bored Panda. “I pointed my camera at the ground and was shocked but very happy to see a very cute little house mouse standing up just like a meerkat in the fresh cut grass.”

“I knew instantly the cute animal was a star and ran back inside to get a couple of peanuts to put down for him. Sitting there, waiting, it was only minutes before he came back out for the treats.”

“It was at that point I thought I would give the little mouse a shelter and safe place to hide and feed.”

“I had a bit of experience taking cute photos of wildlife and mice as I also had another mouse that used to live in my garden shed and only come out after dark. He was a wood mouse, and we named him Stuart.”

“He was once a single mouse, but he left at the start of spring 2018, maybe to find a mate. Hoping he comes back this winter and maybe he could get to know the new mice in the garden.”

“We get all kinds of wildlife in the garden. Many types of birds, such as starlings, house sparrows, blackbirds, robins, and more. Even a grey heron who has taken most of the goldfish from my ponds.”

“We also have a fox that visits every night and a lot of hedgehogs and squirrels.”

“At first there was just the one mouse. He had a cut in his ear, and we called him George. I piled some small logs around a box as a home for the mouse and covered it with moss and straw to give him a little shelter.”

“I could see the cats sitting just feet away at the other side of a fence, so the log pile also gave him a bit more safety.”

“I then put up some wire fencing along the fence, so there was no way the cats could get to the mouse. I also have a small Jack Russell Terrier dog, so the cats know not to come in the garden, and the dog pays the mice no attention.”

“A couple of days later, I noticed there could be more than one mouse inside the log pile, and it was not long ’till they both came out for a bit of food.”

“I decided to build them a home as I wanted to give them a safe place in the garden and not fall prey to cats or other animals. Also, as I was feeding the mice, it was the right thing to do as I would feel it was my fault getting them to come out if they became prey. Being a wildlife photographer, I wanted to create a nice looking habitat for any pictures I would take.”

“The first stage of the log pile was very easy and only took an hour or so to make. As more mice came the following days, however, I made changes, adding more rooms. The inside of the box structure has 2-3 ways in and out, so they can escape if need be. Over the weeks and months, the log pile village has been steadily growing.”

“I added more space and made it ready for a cold winter, giving the mice the best chance possible to survive. I have counted around 5 or more mice and the female, Mildred, is looking pregnant so hoping we will have a large litter of baby mice around Christmas.”

“Knowing mice can have up to 14 babies, I could be building many more log pile rooms. But I have space and don’t mind living alongside such cute and very photogenic little critters.”

“The food I give them is usually all natural. I pick or collect berries, nuts, and fruits that grow wild just over the road in the Shire Brook Valley Local Nature Reserve. I also give them the same mix of seeds that I put on the bird tables along with sunflower seeds and other hazel or walnuts. As a treat, I give them a couple of dry mealworms and some suet pellets but do try and stick to natural, healthy food.”

“I have always liked photography but have only owned a DSLR for around three years now, slowly building up my kit and upgrading cameras to improve my skills and also help get better mouse pictures and images of other wildlife.”

“A better kit and a good lens help but nothing beat learning how to control the camera, understand the settings, and learn to understand the wildlife you are taking photos of. To help get closer or know where and when to find your subjects.”

“The mice are still here and living a very happy life. It is winter now, so the days are shorter and they come out less often. Once it gets dark, it can be hard to see them. However, I see them come out in the day for food and it is always all gone by the next morning. I also give them handfuls of feathers from an old pillow and they take that to line their beds inside and keep them warm on these cold UK winter nights.”

Cute. My initial thought was; shit, he is going to have mice infestation in his house. I used to live in an old farmhouse and would catch ~10 mice from september-december. But accommodating them like this could probably keep them from taking up recidency in his house.

When I was living in a duplex apartment at my University, I used to keep a planter in the driveway that held tomato plants. The tomatoes were coming in nicely. But one day I came home to find all but three tomatoes gone..two green and one underripe. "Who the heck is stealing my tomatoes" I thought. Then two days later, I caught my thief. A large grey squirrel. I never knew they liked tomatoes. I started putting apples out for them..and they finally left my tomatoes alone.

omg these are amazing ! Just yesterday one of my colleagues was telling me how she put out poison because she discovered mice in her house and she was completely freaking out. I told her that I just recently watched a video of a beautiful barn owl that had ingested poison flopping around and slowly dying, that what she's doing doesn't only affect the mice, but everything that eats the mice and it continues on to a long chain that she couldn't possibly foresee. When you're killing animals that kill mice then that's pretty stupid. I basically ruined her day. Someone has to speak up for them. I think I made an impact. I hope so.

They're adorable and his pictures are wonderful but unless he lives way out in the country, I can't imagine his neighbors want lots of mice running around and reproducing. They won't all live in the cute houses he builds, they'll look in other places. Maybe I'm too much of a city girl.

Love the respect for animals. Here in New Zealand our government drops 1080 poison cereal baits from helicopters which kills everything in our native forests in the name of conservation. What's worse is that they know it kills the native birds they say they're trying to save. It's shear stupidity driven by big business agriculture. :-(

As a photographer for 40 years I know how much patience was involved and how many pictures you had to take for this post. The mice are darling and you are a very nice and kind man. Keep up the good work. However, the number can spiral out of control so you might want to do something about birth control. Just sayin. You might want to consult with a vet.

This is such a treat for me to see all your photos. I fostered a baby wild mouse for a about a year a couple of years ago, so this is very special to me :) ...I ended up with 5 mice total at the end, trying to find a perfect companion for the little rescue rascal among a pet store mice. They all had their own personalities, but the wild one, "Firby, the Rocketman" (she was a girl actually as I discovered a little later, but the way that tiny bit could launch herself in the air was out of this world skill, hence 'the rocketman', lol... wild instincts don't give in easily... she was also super smart) was the most vibrant one for sure :) ....and my last domesticated one - Zoey - was such a caring soul.

I look after a bunch of mooses (mice) that I have caught at Evolution Diet Pet Food Co. & at home over the past 20 years. Mice at Evolution Diet are caught live in see-through steel traps & they are either set free or kept as pets. I have 5 terrariums and clean them every day and feed them Evolution Diet Organic, Non GMO Cat-Dog Food along with Valerian Root (1-500 mg cap per cup of food) so they don't breed and Cranberry Powder (1-700 mg capsule per 2 cups) so they do not develop urinary tract infection. Some of our Pet Mice are over 8 Human Years of age. They are beautiful and easy to handle by their tails. The mice terrariums are fish tanks with mesh tops. I use Uber shredded newspaper for covering the bottom of the cages. Mice must have an 8 inch to 10 inch wheel to run on so that they get their exercise every day. Mice are very much fun to watch. Out of the 40 or so Mice I take care of, a few actually like to be held by their tails on my arm and get rubbed & petted.

I've always liked mice - though I don't want them inside (the cats seem to discourage that). I have rescued several from those damned glue traps and taken them outside to be set free. Got my boss at a big NYC agency to ban those traps in our building. If you're going to kill something, kill it - but don't let them languish and suffer on those things.

So stupid. Disease carrying rodents. They're not pets, they're wild animals. Destructive wild animals. We live next to a field and rats and mice are a menace. They get in our shed and our attic and destroy things. I quit counting after I trapped about 3 dozen. After keeping it up for a couple of more weeks I finally had them quit coming around. I now have poison bait stations out for any stragglers. Good riddance pests.

Last year we live trapped at least 8 "Mice"..more like rats because they were 4" or 6" long not including their tail. We let them go 6 kms away in some fields. Even though our area is fully developed it was an agricultural area not more than 20 years ago....so there's lots of wildlife under ground or in the forests and fields nearby.

Okay, I'm going to rain on the parade. When we moved into this house, there were mice in the garage and kitchen and bedrooms and front room... you get the picture. There was mouse poop all over. We got rid of the mice the only way that worked - mouse traps. We stopped counting at 24. Then, we had rats in the garage, etc. They even chewed through the TV cable. The dogs got them. Good boy. It's all very sweet to build them houses and feed them, however, you want to be very sure there is no mousy access to your house. They will have lots of babies and move in if you aren't careful.

This is the perfect story for a wonderful poem, made famous by the wonderful Dr. Herriot stories from many years ago: “All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all. Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colours, He made their tiny wings. The purple headed mountain, The river running by, The sunset, and the morning, That brightens up the sky. The cold wind in the winter, The pleasent summer sun, The ripe fruit in the garden, He made them every one. He gave us eyes to see them, And lips that we might tell, How great is God Almighty, Who has made all things well.” ― Cecil Frances Alexander

This man is precious. Those pictures are like from Disney movie! Cuteness and sweetness overload. Mice are so nice, harmless creatures! Sure they can be a problem for grain factories... But in general I don't mind them at all. I hope they will survive the winter, have healthy babsies for Christmas and the colony will thrive :D
