Honestly he wasn't all that emotionally stable it just presented in ways most don't normally notice. His ability to assess risk and decide reasonable amounts of it was nearly non existant. "Hey that person mentioned the platform I'm after, gotta be safe", "Hey this girl I've never met but am pretty certain is brand new to this whole magic thing is pointing a wand directly at me, I'm sure that can't go wrong." "Oh hey, I think that teacher got attacked by a giant dog because he's dangerous, better make it clear I don't trust him." and that's just the first book/movie, his concern for his own well being drops significantly in each sequel.

To be fair in Order of the Phoenix he was mentally connected to Voldy who is himself pretty emotionally unstable.

Why did HP never wonder about grandparents, uncles, cousins, etc? Why was he SO uncurious about the world around him when he discovered he had a wizarding life?
In the books he sees them all in the mirror. But Lily did not have any family left except Petunia. All his grandparents are dead and James was a single kid.

Anyone that read the book can see that he had major anger issues. Not to mention his impulsiveness and constantly running into danger. He had a self destructive personality, which he LITERALLY followed through on. One thing I would NOT call him is 'Emotionally stable'. My therapist would have a field day with him.
I always felt that I was extremely strange that he was forced to live in a cubby hole underneath the stairs yet he acted like a completely normal person... Because that's absolute nonsense. ..

I’ve known some kids raised by abusive parents who turned out very stable. They all somehow had the perspective early on that their parents were cruel and they didn’t want to be like that. That approach fits with the HP logic, which is that he had a great innate strength of character.
That's the beauty about people! Some can weather any storm while others splinter with the smallest wind. Our greatest strength is our ability to create ourselves. Regardless of the environment or what is inside us, once we get past our purposeful excuses, once we admit responsibility for all the parts of ourselves no one or nothing else can touch, then, and only then, can we live as and reveal our truest selves. It's better to focus on a world where everyone can be better than settle for a world of problems and half-hearted solutions. We are free, right? But, in so many cases, it just seems like we are free to die without any purpose. Free to live a life like a tree falling in a forest with no one to hear it. It's like the free, generic version of freedom. Tell me we can't do better.
I disagree. I was raised in care, and according to a few documentaries, I should be a serial killer. Because reasons. Yet I’m not!

Yah. I am surprised he did not go all Voldemort on the Dursley's. But he was written as the hero and had to be a shining example.
Emotionally stable? He makes the glass disappear and dumps his cousin into the snake pit when he gets angry enough. Hagrid asks him if he'd ever "made things happen". The story doesn't elaborate but the snake pit incident should be an indication of his ability. Not every abused child grows up to be a psychopath. Some of them grow up to be talented witches. By the way: in the real world, they are witches - male witches or female witches. Wizards are something totally different, with different abilities and spiritual avenues.

Many fictional child characters are like this. Its only if they are sidekicks that kids shows let traumatized kids be actually traumatized. Shawn from Boy Meets World had major issues after parental abandonment, Sam from iCarly had an emotionally and physically abusive mom and was obviously traumatized, has social and behavioral issues, and wound up in jail (as told in Sam and Cat). Cat from Victorious has a strongly implied problematic home life, and she goes from being slightly ditzy teen to completely regressing into a child like state that persists into young adulthood. Angelica from Rugrats has some pretty big red flags even as a small child ( all those kids are neglected but Angelica is the only one with behavioral issues). But they were all side kicks or side characters. Main characters are pretty much always emotionally stable no matter what their hardships are. Harry Potter was an excellent example of that. Image how that story would read if he had to process his trauma.
They hated him, yes, but they mostly left him alone. Besides, he is a wizard and his parents filled him with so much love, that in the end, it was that love that defeated Voldemort

"Several authors, including one of my favorites — Pico Iyer — talk about the value of stillness, of silence, of doing nothing," she told Bored Panda.

"I've begun strength training and have learned that you should do it one day and then 'rest' the next, to give your muscles time to readjust, recover, and revive," she said. "I feel that way when I 'do nothing' in my work or thinking — it gives my mind some time to readjust (to not pushing so hard), to recover (from hard work and thinking), and to revive (and play with something that may not have had a chance to pop up)," Napier explained.

The professor suspects that if we let our minds rest during work hours, just as we have a "rest day" in exercise, we'll see benefits and perhaps generate new ideas fairly quickly. After all, nearly everyone knows how drained we feel after several hours of tiring consecutive work. Then, coming up with beautiful innovative ideas is far from an easy task. But if we pause regularly during the day and give our brains a little break from thinking, we might avoid hitting creative burnout.
"Years ago, I worked with a group of faculty members (five of us, very different fields, ways of thinking) to design a new academic program. We started with an empty whiteboard for every meeting. After a few false starts, we learned to trust that we would have some great ideas by the end of each meeting. By removing the expectation and pressure of being creative, we became dramatically more competent at finding ideas. We allowed 'nothing' to be our starting point and that freed us to generate some great (and many not-so-great) ideas," Napier added.

Unfortunately, the modern world makes it hard for our minds to wander into the wilderness of unrelated thoughts. We’re constantly bombarded by daunting headlines, interrupted by our ringing devices, and feeling the weight of our personal and professional responsibilities every second of the day. So even when we strive to be peaceful and at ease, we find it extremely difficult to do so. Luckily for us, Napier explained that increasing our creativity doesn’t require much effort.
"I have a brutal commute from my home to my office — in heavy traffic, it can be....nine minutes! I'm lucky, of course, but realized a few years ago that even that amount of time could help me 'do nothing' and become more creative," she said and added that simply driving in silence to a place she knows how to get to without thinking made a huge difference. "I generated ideas, I solved problems, I came up with new dinner meals… It's a very simple act that I've recommended to many people who have real commutes — 20 or 30 or 45 minutes."

However, turning off the audio book or radio can be challenging for many people, so she suggests starting with one day a week or in the evenings on the way home. "Now that we're working from home more, however, it seems harder to find that clear cut quiet or 'nothing time,'" Napier noted. "I've been trying (not fully successfully, I'll admit) to take 30 minutes after my morning work time to just lie down, go into that semi-sleep mode, and boom, good ideas seem to come then. Once again, by giving my brain a little 'downtime,' it continues to work but maybe goes at its own pace and then drops some creativity on its own time."
There are several animals I‘d prefer to be alive over some people.
Napier pointed out that to become better at doing nothing, we have to "find activities that don't require heavy thought and use that as a time to let your brain wander; or have a set routine or habit that builds in some snippets of downtime." The professor mentioned several pockets of time that allows her to be in a relaxed state, have a distracted mind and let her imaginations run free. For example, her commute, taking a shower and making a coffee or a tea are short periods of time when she doesn't have to think.
Moreover, she sets the alarm to work for 40 minutes and then stop for 10, using that as downtime. "Some people lie down on a yoga mat and just meditate or sleep; ironing (20 minutes); laundry folding (5-10 minutes). Then, there are the specific gifts of time I offer to myself — when I declare I'll take an hour in the day to look at the clouds or birds," she said and added that while this doesn't happen often enough, she continues to work on it.
"I suspect now, more than ever, we need the self-care of doing nothing now and then, and we need to make it something that happens regularly, not just when we're forced into it (when we get sick, injured)," Napier told us. So our advice for you today, dear readers, is to allow yourselves to be bored and witness how quickly you can come up with fascinating and deep musings.
