I knew a dog who was so utterly dedicated to ripping the squeaker out of dog toys, that humans would buy him squeaky toys just for the pleasure of watching them being cheerfully disemboweled! That was a great dog.

For 10 years, the r/mildlyinteresting subreddit has just kept growing and growing into one of the biggest communities on Reddit. The moderators describe the page as being for “Mildly interesting stuff. Stuff that interests you. Mildly. It's in the name.” So in other words, it's not the most jaw-dropping or extraordinary stuff, but it's definitely not boring.

In a previous article one of the moderators, Cowbeller1, told Bored Panda that the most popular posts in the sub have something to do with luck: "Maybe you come across something interesting in your day-to-day life and remember to take a picture, maybe you're just lucky enough that something is interesting to the community. No real rhyme or reason aside from that," the mod explained.

Another moderator called RedSquaree said that original photos and titles are a key part of this online group. Their content is generated by the community and given that titles cannot be clickbait, there is a unique feeling of people seeing something mildly interesting and posting it.

But what if you are so distracted that you don’t see the odd-looking things around you? Constant interruptions from our devices that keep buzzing every few minutes is just one thing that makes it hard to focus. And even when we’re able to concentrate on one particular thing, we might still miss other important details.

An experiment at Harvard University called "The Invisible Gorilla” showed a video where six people pass basketballs around. While you watch, you have to count how many passes people in white shirts make. At one point, a gorilla comes into the picture and leaves, spending nine seconds on screen.

It's hard to believe, but half of the viewers did not see the gorilla at all. They were so focused on one single act, the passes, that they didn't notice what’s entering their visual field. "This experiment reveals two things: that we are missing a lot of what goes on around us, and that we have no idea that we are missing so much,“ the creators of this study explained.

Tipping is not as important here as it is in the US, but when we had a guys-only table, no matter who served them the whole night, we'd send our cutest waitress over when it came to paying the bill. It did work out almost every time. So yeah, indeed, tipping IS sexist.

Based on a few google reviews, what is considered a "fair wage" is suspect. Also, it's a cafe in a gym where they ask you to bus your own tables. And you have to sign a waiver from injury to eat there. Sounds like another company saying the right things but doing as little as possible to make a real difference.

You should pay your employees a decent wage AND allow tips; if my waitress is really nice I still want to give a little extra because they deserve it, not because they'll starve if I don't.

This is great. When I waited tables, I never treated my customers well in the hope of a good tip, I did it because it was my job and they were nice enough to spend their disposable income at our restaurant. Yes, you can make a lot of money in tips, but it's an archaic and servile custom. It needs to go away.

Even though tipping is not necessary in some countries it is still a way to show your appreciation to the workers! I would hate it if my boss decided to do that! Giving a few cents is not a big deal and could mean a lot for the person that service you (as for considering the tip sexist i find this a terrible joke! We think this is sexist but paying women less for the same job is not sexist? wtf!!)

Since we pay a living wage to our servers, here in NZ, tipping isn't necessary. However, if I get really outstanding service, I will tip. Just to thank the server. Male or female makes no difference to me. I used to be a server in America, and it's very hard when you get someone that tips like it's 1950! Since there servers rely on tips.

At the JCPenneys where I worked, the employees in some of the departments were paid on commission. The idea was that it would make the salespeople more attentive to the customer. What it did was to create a highly competitive workplace, and the customers were ignored because most of the staff was busy ringing up other workers' customers and getting the credit. It was like working for tips (with the other waitresses stealing your tips off your tables).

Unfortunately, this sort of business policy isn't always that great. Note that it doesn't say how much the "fair and liveable wage" is. A lot of times here in the United States, what is advertized as a "fair and liveable wage" often is not either (inflation, competitive pay, poor labor laws, commute prices, union busting, etc.). Many restaurant workers genuinely need the tips in order to make enough money to survive, as the food service industry is often highly underpaid. While the sexism in tipping is a problem and should be addressed, it doesn't seem like a good reason to get rid of tipping altogether. Maybe this establishment genuinely does mean what it says, but I've seen too many businesses here in America say things like this only in order to exert control over their employees' lives.

At my job the servers only get paid about $2.85 an hour other than that they get tips. I feel so bad for the servers who work the slow days. I’m a hostess and I get paid almost 8 times more than they do. It’s really not fair. Also I live in a state where employers don’t have to give breaks. It’s always wonderful standing up between 4-8 hours almost everyday. The only time I can sit is to use the bathroom.

I was just thinking how the old line "buy yourself something nice" that used to get thrown out i the movies is really demeaning in its implication. Like "i know you live paycheck to paycheck, and cant afford frivolities, let me casually throw out some pocket change so that you can theoretically afford some luxury for 1 day only due to my generosity". I know its kinda the other way around now with tips being expected, but if you think about it, it has this whole weird air of the poor holding out the begging bowl. Its not even being paid for your work, its depending on the moods of other people for charity. They dont have to tip, or they might just feel like being shitty that day, and your hanging at least part of you livelyhood on that....

It's a good concept, but you have to realize you will generally pay the same in any case (restaurants make less money per check than the server does in the US), and there's no motivation to go above and beyond. The best servers make the most money at the best restaurants, and in a normal business model, it won't work like that.

except studies find the waitstaff earn more on average under the tip system. National Waitstaff average is $16.50 an hour after tips, places like NYC are 20.25 after tips. When one of the casual dining chains eliminated tipping in favor of salary, 3 weeks in and over 90% of their waitstaff went on strike until tipping was brought back, which it was. Most waitstaff earn more under this system, restuaunts (which make between 3-6 cents per dollar spent) have lower overhead, and keeps prices lower on the front end, and actual leads to more jobs in the industry and more eateries. On the net 90% of people are better off under the current system. The solutions hurt the 90% to help the 10%.

Tipping needs to go, I hate how some people look down on wait staff and the employees forced to kiss ass to jackasses. Who still doesn't tip. Also I really hope they aren't allowed to take a percentage of card tips any more, and then wait staff are expected to pay other employees from their tips. Like the bussers and even cook line.

And most places do share tips with other employees, so if you don't tip, they still get a percentage of their total tips taken away. Please tip until the laws change.

I will do all of their requests and still leave a tip. Not many people are offended when you leave them 35% for their hard work. My job has taken great care of me and I want their job to do so as well. I’ve been to Europe and Asia multiple times and not a single server chased me to the parking lot demanding I take my money back. This is silly.

Also, it turns out that if you don't catch new information coming into your eye range within 1.5 seconds, you are unlikely to see it at all. Experimental psychologists Katherine Wood and Daniel Simons performed similar tests to the Gorilla experiment, they asked people to follow black and white shapes moving across the computer. “The most natural thing to assume is that the longer it’s there, the more opportunity you have to notice it, so we were quite surprised when it turned out that it seems not to help you very much,” says Wood.

From the original Reddit post, top comment by u/t_bythesea: "Sorry, she may have thought that's what happened, but it's not. In machine cut glassware (especially if the glass is really thin) this is something that happens occasionally. There is a flaw in the glass that runs around the circumference and often not visible to the eye. Under pressure or extreme hot or cold water it can shear all the way around. while I'm sure her engagement ring is lovely. It would never cut glass like this. In 26 years of selling glassware of all styles, price ranges and quality, I've seen thousands of breaks like this."

And as stated last time this was here - this level of pruning is a sign that someone has or carries the gene for cystic fibrosis. I hope that they have talked to someone about it.
