Who needs Alice In Wonderland when we have Mother Nature? As crazy as it sounds, there are too many mind-boggling things happening just outside the comfort of your home. Like, did you know that... goats have accents and owls don't have eyeballs? Nature has surely been generous with throwing its weird gifts at us to think about.

And often, you don’t need to go far to realize there’s a bunch of (mildly) interesting stuff happening right at your doorstep. From an odd tree that has a single branch of an apple tree to a frog so tiny, your fingernail looks like Everest in comparison, these are some of the most amusing examples spotted by people and shared in the Reddit community r/mildlyinteresting.

Whether it’s mildly or overwhelmingly interesting remains a subject of debate, but one cannot argue just how crazy nature can be.

Remember the days when you were a kid playing in the back yard, never ready to come home for dinner? It’s because spending time in nature was an adventure most of us were already ready to take on. From finding odd colorful bugs hiding in the greenery to catching your first fish in the neighbor’s pond, these were the moments full of excitement that you may still carry to this day.

But these days, Americans are spending less and less time outdoors. A 2019 Outdoor Foundation study showed that nearly half of the US population doesn’t participate in any outdoor recreation at all, and only 17.9 percent got out at least once a week in 2018. As a result, there have been one billion fewer hikes, climbs, rides, and outdoor excursions than a decade ago.

A similar Yale study from 2017 suggested that the lure of technology and places people work, live, and go to school “do not encourage contact with the natural world," and "myriad competing priorities and activities push experiences in nature to the side.”

“In particular,” the report said, “older adults were concerned that younger generations are overly reliant on electronic media, unaware of how the natural world works, and unacquainted with the simple enjoyment of being outdoors.”

Here at Bored Panda, we hope that showing the little wonders nature can bring us will bring back everyone's interest in going outdoors and spending some time in the sunshine. Not only does it help to boost your immune system, lift your mood, and make you more active, it also gives you the sense of curiosity we all had in childhood and lost somewhere in our hectic schedules.

It's strange that the root stock seems to be producing big fruits, and the grated tree isn't. It should be the other way around.

My late father-in-law was a master at grafting fruit trees. He had a tree that grew apples on one half and peaches on the other. It was one of the strangest things I've seen.

What exactly is a “normal“ tree? Looks like it might be a beech tree.

Someone grafted a copper beech and an apple tree. I wonder how the apples taste.

I had a beautiful huge rose bush in my yard that the root stock had pushed itself into. So I was able to have two different roses from one bush. Beautiful, looked like a rose flower arrangement.

Well, you see, when that tree was planted someone was eating an apple and tossed it on the ground.

We had a similar type situation. We planted a flowering crabapple tree, but over the years, a grafted part of the tree took over, and we ended up with a Granny Smith apple tree with no trace of the crabapple left.

The Apple may have been resistant to a certain disease prevalent in the area so they've used it as root stock for a different tree. But a branch has come through and been left. Maybe similar to how they use disease resistant root stock in vineyards

Definitely grafted. I used to pick apples in Manjimup (Western Australia) as a lad. The main crop was Granny Smiths but orchardists used to graft "odd" branches like Golden Delicious or Jonathon randomly through the orchard and even plant the odd different tree to help with pollination. A Golden delicious grafted onto a Granny Smith is about the best eating apple you will ever taste.

This is very easy to do and there are "stealth grafters" who amend fruit tree branches onto non-fruiting trees to support pollinators and provide a little fruit for everyone else.

Which is graft and which is rootstock!? And did it revert, or was it just badly grafted?

I would think someone tried to graft an apple tree to a beech or w/e for w/e reason and it looks like the grafts all died off except that one branch and the beech took over? Thats my guess but im not a farmer lol

I think it's an apple branch grafted to whatever the heck kind of tree that is. The leaves growing off the trunk below the branch are the same color as the upper branches.

So if the rest is just a normal tree, does that mean it doesn’t grow plums coz it looks like a plum tree.

Nature has done its own tree grafting! Or, more like.y, an apple seed got into a small hole or groove in the tree, and grew there!
