If you are looking for simple entertainment where you don’t have to concentrate much but can still follow along and give way to emotions, let me introduce you to the world of telenovelas.

If you have never seen one, you’re probably asking yourself: “What is a telenovela?” Simply put, it is a TV show mainly produced in Latin America, something between a sitcom and a soap opera. Brazil is considered to be the first country to produce a telenovela. It happened in 1951, with Cuba and Mexico following the next year. In the subsequent years, Mexico became one of the biggest producers of telenovelas.

While most telenovelas are usually around a hundred episodes long and run for about a year, they have a self-contained plot. That is to say, from the first till the last episode, it’s not just a series of life events but one developing story arc. Obviously, each telenovela has a different story, but there are some common models they often employ: siblings or parents and children separated for years, family feuds over money and power, and of course, love that has to fight obstacles before coming to a happy ending.

For a while, telenovelas were produced for the local market, until one Mexican soap opera, Los Ricos También Lloran, was exported to several countries. It instantly put telenovelas on the global map, and Mexican actress Verónica Castro gained a huge fan following.

Today you can find some of the modern telenovelas on Netflix, with a lot of telenovela actors being popular not only in their native country. Below you will find some of the best telenovelas, old and new, produced in Mexico. Whether you are a seasoned telenovela fan or are just about to step into this whole new world, you’ll find something to your taste here.
