Shocking Photos Of Indonesia’s Mentally Ill Patients Show Their Disturbing Living Conditions
Pasung, the Indonesian term for restraints or restrained, was banned in 1977, but is still widely used in a country where mental illness is a taboo issue. Concerned by the plight of these people, NY based photographer Andrea Star Reese spent 2011-2012 investigating the conditions of Indonesia’s mental health facilities for her 2013 documentary “Disorder.”
“Walking in the door has been easy, even when conditions were horrifying, and they often are,” Reese revealed to Feature Shoot. “Leaving is what is difficult and disturbing. I am continuing this documentation because conditions remain critical, progress is slow, and Indonesia’s government does pay attention to the International press. International and National NGO’s are using my photographs and reports to further their efforts. I cannot leave this story”

hey there. as an Indonesian, I too feel ashamed not knowing about this. I have an idea. has anyone/any organization done official charity for these patients? If not, would you like to join me to make a charity for these guys? and I hope you live in jakarta, cause I think I want to start from jakarta. if you have any information regarding this matter, please inform me through my email : untari.sabdiana@gmail.com looking forward for you reply :)
Load More Replies...This is truly horrific.. My heart hurts for all of these poor poor people.. they are treated so badly when they did nothing to deserve it! They are not murderers! These people did not ask for their mental disorders.. :( This is a sad reality they live in.. I hope more people become aware of this treatment in Indonesia and help get those people to safety, warm clothes, a bed to sleep in, clean water and food!
Hi ! I just read the article by bored panda - about the condition of mentally challenged people in indonesia . We are a group who do charity work in Jakarta .Could you please help me contact someone who can tell how can we help these people. Thank you for making us aware of their but we as a society need to do something for them . Even if making sure they get proper meals. Pls guide Thank you Rgds Rachna
I agree with JagungBakar...let's a massive campaign on this one. let's spread the awareness. I am thinking doing it but need more people in the same boat for discussion.
Load More Replies..."Spiritual Approach" means exorcism, pushing, banishing, pointing fingers as if the family of the patients has done something awfully wrong so the karma reached them into their children's soul, and turned them into mentally disturbed persons. Sadly, because people in Indonesia mostly still holds their traditions and religions dearly, they refused to seek help from the professional, and seek help from the nearest Pak Kiai to perform some rituals that helped people with mental illness.
Horrible, inhuman and just sad people are treated like that by others. At least food and shelter should be granted by family or government.
Spiritual healing? So basically mentality ill people are trying to heal other mentality ill people. First the need a better facility and basic living standards. Second they need real specialized doctors.
unfortunately the 'specialized doctors' are not the ones there doing their best to help. It may not be your idea of what they 'need' but at least they have that much. Bless those that are looking these poor people in the eye and trying to help, even if it isn't 'adequate' to those knowing no more of poverty than the lack of the latest edition of the IPhone.
Load More Replies...I can't accept the fact that their families are doing this to them...
it is sad, but because of the lack of knowledge, they don't know anything else. villagers living from day to day, hard working, and all of the sudden, the child turns out to me mentally ill- that's the only solution they have.
Load More Replies...These people are treated worse than rapists, paedophiles and murderer's. It's absolutley awful and disgusting! How do we live in a world where things like this still go on? Heartbreaking! Makes you think how much we should appreciate every tiny little thing we have like a front door and the Freedom to walk out of it.
Makes me want to slap every one of those entitled college students ranting about 'wage slaves'. They have not a clue.
Load More Replies...Are you kidding me! Are you f*****g kidding me??? How can this be?! These people are treated worse than animals in the zoo! This is worse than death. I would rather have my family pay for a lethal injection than "pay" for special treatments or a "luxurious bed" like that!!!! This is a shame!
Unfortunately, this is common in other 3rd world countries, maybe in particular Asian countries in my experience. It's this way because there is no knowledge/education or funding. In these countries, some homes are very bare like this with cement walls, even in main cities. So families really don't know what to do when someone is mentally ill or if these conditions are human or not. There really needs to be a revamp in how the government deals with health issues
We used to have facilities like this in the U.S. Our government shut them down after the embarrassment was exposed. It makes me wonder where are the people who would be in them now? Are inhumane care or no care at all our only options for those who cannot afford private hospitals?
Take a look around us. Here in Canada too. They live as homeless on the streets if they can't afford a facility or if their family has abandoned them.
Load More Replies...And in the same time wealthy countries such as Norway gives to murderers new playstation (e.g. Breivik) :( this is so sad and truly unfairly...

They transform a human to an alive nothing. And it quite satisfies them. They are the criminals. And we have to struggle with them as with the criminals. Don't lie to yourselves, gentlemen. The pictures are sort of too beautiful for their content. Systematic starvation... a terrible way to die. You can judge how civilized a country is by the way it treats its weakest citizens.
This is incane. People underfed. You are doing like the German nazies in Europe 1939 - 1945 who also starved out their patients. You are on the same leval. By doing this you cant have a civilisation. Is this muslim religion to treat people like this, so is it your Prophet Mohammed is not better and on the same level as Adolf Hitler. Hallo! If there is a jot of civilisation left. Are there anybody out there and do you reach me: Hallo you are dealing whith individuals you are ficsating and starving to death in your mental institutions. Wat kind of country are you Indonesia and do you have any kind of covilisation? Love from Norway :-)
Horrible that this happens to people. It's utterly disgusting. Cruel people
the appalling conditions they have to live in & with no nutritional food, clothes or bedding let alone exercise or treatment would make their mental states 100 times worse. these poor people, no one deserve to live like this.my heart breaks for them.
This is disgusting, I feel very sorry for those poor people, Them on their government need shooting or locking up in one of these places to show them what it is like for those locked in them.
Thank you for capture this sad moment and share it to the world. You're photos can deliver their voice and reflect this bad situation. This is so embarassing.
Horrible, inhuman and just sad people are treated like that by others. got 2 love the Islamic approach :(
During Ceaușescu era in Romania I visited (illegally) an orphanage, it was practically the same thing. You can't see that and not feeling completely devastated.
This is so disturbing. How do we still have this happening all over? Practices like that belong in the dark ages. I am horrified :(
Oh my, how can people be so cruel. I think it is time for petition or some thing to try and help those poor souls. How do we go about to do that.
Most of them doesn't even have any psychologist background or education. They are just people paid to 'taking care' of those poor people.
Load More Replies...Speechless, having lived with a condition for years I am angered yet feel guilty for living in the 1st world & coming from privilege.
We have to denounce these abuses to the world, please stop this cruelty.
This article is such a tear-jerker! It's so sad how these people are punished for things that they cannot control. I can't believe the government could be so ignorant of this. Now I think I'll stop thinking MY day is bad! May GOD's love, grace, and protection bless these people!
The barbaric nature of humans never ceases to amaze me. When you think humans can't be any more ignorant, cruel or hateful, they always seem to find a way to be even worse than the person before them. >:-(
Reading and seeing this makes me want to help them or that place in some kind of way, in a volunteering way or any other minimal way just so they could feel peace in their heads and hearts for just one second and remember what's it like to be human again and that it is not like a devils playhouse but a wonderful gift. I do believe that in the near future there will be at least a volunteering programme to help these forgotten souls and i hope i'll have the opportunity to be a small part of it.
Tears are flowing for these sick people who live these despicable conditions!. The ones who are shackled really tore at my heart. This is so inhumane and it needs to be known to the world. Every human being deserves food, a bed and medicine. The treatment of these sick people is beyond shameful!
Some of the facilities are poor management even with claimed as Islamic approach/management. They deserve better treatment and hospitality.
This is horrific and wrong. I will be praying for them and will look into a way I can help in some way. Thank you for the shocking pictures.
They don't expect them to be functionable ever again. It is sad, but this is life in "third world" countries. Mostly it is about money- to pay for education, to pay for food and facilities. And also about old traditions/habits/customs, which are very hard to leave behind.
Load More Replies..."Spiritual Approach" means exorcism, pushing, banishing, pointing fingers as if the family of the patients has done something awfully wrong so the karma reached them into their children's soul, and turned them into mentally disturbed persons. Suryani Institute For Mental Health has done a lot for the mentally ill in Indonesia - you can find more information about this on google. IF YOU CAN, PLEASE HELP 😢😢 : http://www.suryani-institute.com/about-us/donation/
Really nauseating .. those people are treated worse than animals. Disgraceful.
Well, that's what happens when you try to solve mental illness with mass delusion.
Where is all this world relief and health organizations? These people did not choose to be this way I bet many of them could be productive if given a chance but its easier to lock them up in a hell hole...this is horrible. Unfortunately it happens in many poorer countries all over the world. There is a basic need of food, clothing and a bed and a clean environment ....how hard can that be??? The 'Clinton Foundation' who says they help people like this...where are they? This is truly a horrific situation.
They are not patients, they are slaves. They rape woman, make them seen as people with mental problems. They traumatize kids they rape them too. They are showing you how the corporations want a mental ill society.. Post traumatic disorder with rape is caused on purpose so they can mind control kids and slave them. Slavery is a fact nowadays, research Nike. I stopped buying their c**p and it's happening in Indonesia as well. Mental slavery exist too.. Almost every celebrity is controlled by someone and they are just puppets, presidents, politicians, the Vatican, etc. We live in a lie sheeple.
It's sad, but it's like that all over Asia and the middle east. In Vietnam, where I live, like in France not long ago, the mentally ill people are kept within the family when it is possible. But if they are alone, well...
first world hospitals for mental health are prettier looking versions of the same neglect
Even in the US which is one of the richest countries in the world, we have no mental health facilities, not long term anyway. Most mental patients end up on the street or in prison. It's a world wide problem, not just Indonesia
There is a reason why I make a point to talk about mental illnesses as my school speech, too bad I'm bad at public speaking, so nobody would hear it. As an Indonesian who knows and don't know how to help, I'm ashamed. Sorry.
Just kill these people off, because you are giving them a life worse than death, maybe death will be kinder to them than all of you have been.
Yeah, here in Indonesia, mental illness are seen as 'demonic' or something like that, so what they do is just religious rituals that actually didn't help at all. And mental illness are seen as 'embrassing' too, so some families didn't bother to take them to mental hospital, but instead 'throw' them out from their home (which resulting people with mental illness become homeless, usually they're lefted in forrest or mountain).
Sadly, I literally found lots of things in common between myself and the patients. We both live fairly isolated lives.
I am horrified. They will truly be blessed in heaven. I can't imagine how this can happen to people
Terrible treatment of anyone but to treat the sick like this is beyond horrific!! Where are the families? where is the government ? How could anyone think this is ok for the years and years it has been allowed to go on? Shameful !
Dear all, I will be taking part in volunteering project to support mental health awareness in Bali. Please check out my website and donate if you can help. https://www.fundmytravel.com/campaign/UHSx5VwQC2 Thank you
maybe you mean Dr. Radjiman Wediodiningrat Lawang Psychiatric Hospital? Great photos anyway.. it need really big courage to take photo there i think..
We totally should let more people know about this. Good job Bored Panda!
How are we suppose to help these people? There is no charity involved at all? Nobody is on the ground in Indonesia bringing light to this place??
Please don't say things like "Islamic approach" when you haven't done the slightest bit of research on Islamic approach to such matters. Islam advocates for the innocent and the disabled. This atrocity is due to the ignorance and cruelty of the people, not Islamic approach. Islam requires that the disabled be taken care of and treated with kindness and respect, not to strip away their dignity. The attention that you've brought to this matter is most appreciated, but please change the part about "Islamic approach." That is not based on facts.
I really really want to do something! How can I raise awareness & collect for provisions? I'm going to look into this if u want to help
It's not a secret in Indonesia. Everyone know that once you have mental illness, your life will be done. Lack of food, bed, etc. Your family wont treat you as a human anymore. One day, I hope that govt will provide one large space to give mental illness patients a better life.
How incredibly sad, but the US isn't much better, we dont' even HAVE facilities for the mentally ill. They just become homeless
