Shocking Photos Of Indonesia’s Mentally Ill Patients Show Their Disturbing Living Conditions

Pasung, the Indonesian term for restraints or restrained, was banned in 1977, but is still widely used in a country where mental illness is a taboo issue. Concerned by the plight of these people, NY based photographer Andrea Star Reese spent 2011-2012 investigating the conditions of Indonesia’s mental health facilities for her 2013 documentary “Disorder.”
“Walking in the door has been easy, even when conditions were horrifying, and they often are,” Reese revealed to Feature Shoot. “Leaving is what is difficult and disturbing. I am continuing this documentation because conditions remain critical, progress is slow, and Indonesia’s government does pay attention to the International press. International and National NGO’s are using my photographs and reports to further their efforts. I cannot leave this story”

This is truly horrific.. My heart hurts for all of these poor poor people.. they are treated so badly when they did nothing to deserve it! They are not murderers! These people did not ask for their mental disorders.. :( This is a sad reality they live in.. I hope more people become aware of this treatment in Indonesia and help get those people to safety, warm clothes, a bed to sleep in, clean water and food!

Maybe you can start by holding seminars or deliver speeches that educate people on this, especially in the slumps?
It won't work. People won't hear, they won't care since they don't think it's their problem anyway. No. Try different approach. Like, if the whole news paper talking about it. Try to gain people attention first. Try to make them interested first.
What about a go fund me page, with a plan of attack as to how to tackle this problem. Funds would pour in.
"Spiritual Approach" means exorcism, pushing, banishing, pointing fingers as if the family of the patients has done something awfully wrong so the karma reached them into their children's soul, and turned them into mentally disturbed persons. Sadly, because people in Indonesia mostly still holds their traditions and religions dearly, they refused to seek help from the professional, and seek help from the nearest Pak Kiai to perform some rituals that helped people with mental illness.

unfortunately the 'specialized doctors' are not the ones there doing their best to help. It may not be your idea of what they 'need' but at least they have that much. Unfortunately, this is common in other 3rd world countries, maybe in particular Asian countries in my experience. It's this way because there is no knowledge/education or funding. In these countries, some homes are very bare like this with cement walls, even in main cities. So families really don't know what to do when someone is mentally ill or if these conditions are human or not. There really needs to be a revamp in how the government deals with health issues
We used to have facilities like this in the U.S. Our government shut them down after the embarrassment was exposed. It makes me wonder where are the people who would be in them now? Are inhumane care or no care at all our only options for those who cannot afford private hospitals?
Take a look around us. Here in Canada too. They live as homeless on the streets if they can't afford a facility or if their family has abandoned them.
And in the same time wealthy countries such as Norway gives to murderers new playstation (e.g. Breivik) :( this is so sad and truly unfairly...

The barbaric nature of humans never ceases to amaze me. When you think humans can't be any more ignorant, cruel or hateful, they always seem to find a way to be even worse than the person before them. >:-(
Reading and seeing this makes me want to help them or that place in some kind of way, in a volunteering way or any other minimal way just so they could feel peace in their heads and hearts for just one second and remember what's it like to be human again and that it is not like a devils playhouse but a wonderful gift. I do believe that in the near future there will be at least a volunteering programme to help these forgotten souls and i hope i'll have the opportunity to be a small part of it.
Tears are flowing for these sick people who live these despicable conditions!. The ones who are shackled really tore at my heart. This is so inhumane and it needs to be known to the world. Every human being deserves food, a bed and medicine. The treatment of these sick people is beyond shameful!

They don't expect them to be functionable ever again. It is sad, but this is life in "third world" countries. Mostly it is about money- to pay for education, to pay for food and facilities. And also about old traditions/habits/customs, which are very hard to leave behind.

Where is all this world relief and health organizations? Yeah, here in Indonesia, mental illness are seen as 'demonic' or something like that, so what they do is just religious rituals that actually didn't help at all. And mental illness are seen as 'embrassing' too, so some families didn't bother to take them to mental hospital, but instead 'throw' them out from their home (which resulting people with mental illness become homeless, usually they're lefted in forrest or mountain).
Sadly, I literally found lots of things in common between myself and the patients. We both live fairly isolated lives.

It's not a secret in Indonesia. Everyone know that once you have mental illness, your life will be done. Lack of food, bed, etc. Your family wont treat you as a human anymore. One day, I hope that govt will provide one large space to give mental illness patients a better life.

This article is such a tear-jerker! It's so sad how these people are punished for things that they cannot control. I can't believe the government could be so ignorant of this. Now I think I'll stop thinking MY day is bad! May GOD's love, grace, and protection bless these people!
The barbaric nature of humans never ceases to amaze me. When you think humans can't be any more ignorant, cruel or hateful, they always seem to find a way to be even worse than the person before them. >:-(
Reading and seeing this makes me want to help them or that place in some kind of way, in a volunteering way or any other minimal way just so they could feel peace in their heads and hearts for just one second and remember what's it like to be human again and that it is not like a devils playhouse but a wonderful gift. I do believe that in the near future there will be at least a volunteering programme to help these forgotten souls and i hope i'll have the opportunity to be a small part of it.
Tears are flowing for these sick people who live these despicable conditions!. The ones who are shackled really tore at my heart. This is so inhumane and it needs to be known to the world. Every human being deserves food, a bed and medicine. The treatment of these sick people is beyond shameful!
Some of the facilities are poor management even with claimed as Islamic approach/management. They deserve better treatment and hospitality.

If you treat someone like this they will never function in society
They don't expect them to be functionable ever again. It is sad, but this is life in "third world" countries. Mostly it is about money- to pay for education, to pay for food and facilities. And also about old traditions/habits/customs, which are very hard to leave behind.
"Spiritual Approach" means exorcism, pushing, banishing, pointing fingers as if the family of the patients has done something awfully wrong so the karma reached them into their children's soul, and turned them into mentally disturbed persons. Sadly, because people in Indonesia still believes in superstition and supernatural and hold our religions dearly, they refused to seek help from the professional. They believed that religion can heal everything so they just need to go to the nearest Pak Kiai.

Well, that's what happens when you try to solve mental illness with mass delusion.
Where is all this world relief and health organizations? These people did not choose to be this way I bet many of them could be productive if given a chance but its easier to lock them up in a hell hole...this is horrible. Unfortunately it happens in many poorer countries all over the world. There is a basic need of food, clothing and a bed and a clean environment ....how hard can that be??? The 'Clinton Foundation' who says they help people like this...where are they? This is truly a horrific situation.
They are not patients, they are slaves. They rape woman, make them seen as people with mental problems. They traumatize kids they rape them too. They are showing you how the corporations want a mental ill society.. Post traumatic disorder with rape is caused on purpose so they can mind control kids and slave them. Slavery is a fact nowadays, research Nike. I stopped buying their crap and it's happening in Indonesia as well. Mental slavery exist too.. Almost every celebrity is controlled by someone and they are just puppets, presidents, politicians, the Vatican, etc. We live in a lie sheeple.
It's sad, but it's like that all over Asia and the middle east. In Vietnam, where I live, like in France not long ago, the mentally ill people are kept within the family when it is possible. But if they are alone, well...

Even in the US which is one of the richest countries in the world, we have no mental health facilities, not long term anyway. Most mental patients end up on the street or in prison. It's a world wide problem, not just Indonesia
There is a reason why I make a point to talk about mental illnesses as my school speech, too bad I'm bad at public speaking, so nobody would hear it. As an Indonesian who knows and don't know how to help, I'm ashamed. Sorry.

Yeah, here in Indonesia, mental illness are seen as 'demonic' or something like that, so what they do is just religious rituals that actually didn't help at all. And mental illness are seen as 'embrassing' too, so some families didn't bother to take them to mental hospital, but instead 'throw' them out from their home (which resulting people with mental illness become homeless, usually they're lefted in forrest or mountain).
Sadly, I literally found lots of things in common between myself and the patients. We both live fairly isolated lives.

Please don't say things like "Islamic approach" when you haven't done the slightest bit of research on Islamic approach to such matters. Islam advocates for the innocent and the disabled. This atrocity is due to the ignorance and cruelty of the people, not Islamic approach. Islam requires that the disabled be taken care of and treated with kindness and respect, not to strip away their dignity. The attention that you've brought to this matter is most appreciated, but please change the part about "Islamic approach." That is not based on facts.

It's not a secret in Indonesia. Everyone know that once you have mental illness, your life will be done. Lack of food, bed, etc. Your family wont treat you as a human anymore. One day, I hope that govt will provide one large space to give mental illness patients a better life.

Anyhow psychiatry kills. This is its purpose. Psychiatrists make no mistakes and they don't cause random, "unfavorable" effects. They know, how to destroy the humans nature. They transform a human to an alive nothing. And it quite satisfies them. They are the criminals. And we have to struggle with them as with the criminals. Don't lie to yourselves, gentlemen.
