Same-Sex Ads Just Lost This Suit Company 10,000 Instagram Followers, And Here Are The Pics That Caused It
A Dutch menswear company has exposed the lingering anti-gay sentiment that still runs deep in parts of society, by releasing an ad campaign that shows same-sex couples doing things like (shock!) kissing and embracing.
The Dutch are a famously tolerant and open-minded people, and the men’s fashion company in question, SuitSupply, has courted controversy before. However, the founder and CEO, Fokke De Jong, makes his position clear. “The attraction between people is an important part of fashion ad ideas,” he said. “A campaign featuring the attraction between men was long overdue and particularly relevant for our clothing brand.”
Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad reports that the company has seen over 10,000 Instagram followers leave since the controversial ad campaign began, suggesting that it has been poorly received by a large number of people. Mr. De Jong had been aware of the potential for controversy. “We do believe there is potential for negative impact, especially in countries where we have a significant presence, that is known for contrasting viewpoints.” To this end, the photos of men kissing won’t be shown in countries that have a poor record on gay rights, such as Russia and the United Arab Emirates. Mr. De Jong believes that the company’s outlets there would be closed immediately if this were the case.
Clearly though, SuitSupply believe in their inclusivity principles, the strength of their brand, and the willingness of the public (in Western countries at least) to embrace this kind of clever advertising. It has certainly gotten people talking. While there have been, predictably, shrieks of dismay and threatened masculinity by men who cannot bear to see two guys kissing while wearing that most manly of clothing items, the suit; there has also been an outpouring of support and positivity for the inclusive message it sends.
No matter what you think about the suit-ability of the campaign, you gotta admit that it’s bold, eye-catching, and effective fashion statement. Scroll down to check it out for yourself below, and let us know what you think! We don’t know what all the fuss is about, to be honest.

I'm from Russia but the only thing that I find disturbing here is a man on a crimson couch who forgot to wear socks with his suit 😱 That's what I call an abomination 😂 😂😂
To be fair, I don't want to see anybody kissing. I don't mind adverts of people holding hands or hugging, but I find open mouth kissing a bit cringy!
I think it's the idea of an exchange of bodily fluids which is rather icky for public advertising, regardless of the orientation of the couple.
Load More Replies...With the publicity around the loss of followers, and the reason for it I've no doubt they'd quickly pick up a replacement 10,000 from people who'd never heard of them until now.
Load More Replies...Well, losing idiotic and narrow minded 10k followers and gain international respect and press attention, not a bad deal. I like those campaigns, like the advert from nike with the female muslim sport athletes.
Whatever floats your boat, I guess. I don't care what their ads show, you can get one hell of a fine suit for a good price.
There are only two things I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures... and the Dutch.
Am I the only one who can't get over the fact that the CEO's name is freaking FOKKE DE JONG? lol Sorry, but I got a bit of juvenile sniggering going on over here, no offense. Maybe I'm just pronouncing it dirty in my mind, lol. Maybe it's an...artistic name...
Haha can imagine.. But it's quite the normal name over here! Especially the last name, it's basically the Dutch equivalent of 'Smith'. Fokke is a typical name for the north of the Netherlands, it's from Friesland.
Load More Replies...I like all the pictures...i don't see what is there to be offended about.
So they lost 10,000 insta gram followers. In global markets that meaningless. They are getting millions of people around the world to read about the company. First time I have heard of the company and I just looked at their web site. I don't know, but it think it is very clever getting so much free press.
Successful is the ad campaign that doesn't exclude any of the advertised products' potential clients. In other words: if you targeting gay clients you exclude the straight ones who for obvious reasons are not going to feel related with the advertisement's message. In this case the ad defeats its purpose which is to increase the sales and the profits and that because it excludes a huge part of the client base.
Load More Replies...I wish this could be seen as not a big deal. No one would care because it's perfectly normal.
Load More Replies..."This is Satanic and unacceptable", yes Satanist's welcome diversity, in fact we embrace it. So ty :)
^^ It's intricate to me how people can find something "satanic" about that.
Load More Replies...Oh no, how dare anyone show love between two people instead of big...Alpha male....Dominate and f**k the female as an object???? Oh no, horrible, and we all know homosexuality leads to zoophilia!!! Honestly why are people so worried about love between same sex couples, go do your laundry, it stinks from your b******t.
Gosh you're so cool and that whole do your laundry it stinks from b******t line my goodness did you think that up yourself? You really told them
Load More Replies...OH NO! THE HORROR! So bad, seeing two men kissing! This gross! No but seriously where do people even get the idea that there is something wrong with this? It's an advertisement and just because the people in it aren't like you you're gonna freak out? Sad.
They're sick little puppies...sick little closeted little puppies.

Seems like the people who wont buy again, are people they'd want as customers wearing their suits anyway. and nothings dumber then throwing away something you already paid for, you're only hurting your own pocketbook. hahhah oh and Homosexuality has been around for millions of years in most animals on this planet. If you don't like it, don't look.
oops typo... " are people they *wont* want as customers wearing their suits anyway."... ;-)
Load More Replies...Can I get 10,000 people secure in their sexuality and unbiased to give them some new likes? Homophobia is hate and hate is evil not the devil. Man is the devil incarnate. One Love
The thing that you don't seem to understand is that advertisements have the single purpose of increasing sales. Excluding part of the potential clients by targeting a specific part of them of a certain sexual orientation, or if you want to take it a bit further of a certain skin colour, or of certain looks, it is discriminating and defeats by default the reason for making an advertisement in the first place. To increase the client base and so the sales. If you exclude clients you'll have less clients. It is so simple.

Nobody in the family wears a suit, but I want to buy one from them, anyway! The good people love you, Suit Supply. Bravo.
Oh aren't you just the little social justice Warrior. So cool so hip so now so 2018... So hilarious
Load More Replies...Honestly this made me uncomfortable, But who cares, doesnt mean they shouldnt do it, or be able to do it.
Seen the pictures outside (NL), didn’t shock me for a bit. If I hadn’t seen this post I wouldn’t have given it a second thought. I haven’t noticed a fuss about it either... have talked to about 50 people today (work related) in a social setting, some of them very religious, but no comments about it. Maybe it’s more of a thing outside of the Netherlands?
I have a question. Do some of those suits seem loud and tacky to you? When did burgundy suits, bright blue suits, plaid and mismatching plaid suits become stylish?
It's ok. Just put on your Dockers and close your eyes.
Load More Replies...Such handsome models and the clothing...absolutely stylish and hot looking!!!
This is very much part of life now days. Sorry guys, pure fact is guys love guys and women love women! Its ALWAYS been this way, will till the day I die. You need to get your head out of the closet and open your eyes. Whether you like it or not, this is how it is. I can't believe how many narrow minded people there are out there!
all that is about love or attraction is good for me, no matter if you are green, blue, yellow..etc. it's a very good ad and there's nothing wrong about it, just shows that tolerance is increasing which is fabulous. And many who raise their arms in horror maybe it's because deep inside them they like it. FEAR of being different comes out in hate. Kudos for the ads.
I loved the ads but I didnt understand the swimsuit and suit pair...? but anyways great job! those 10,000 people dont deserve suits but instead should wear animal skins and a club
Diving through The Netherlands today I passed a billboard of the photo with the two guys kissing. My initial reaction was "oh, that's different, even for The Netherlands", immediately followed by thinking "good on them for have the guts to do this"...followed by "I wonder how many narrow-minded people this is going to p**s off" lol
Even ten years ago such a campaign could have been corporate suicide. I think in today's climate, the company will be fine. I never heard of them, but my suits always came from Sears or Penney's, and in the last few years before I retired we quit wearing them.
The thought behind the advertiser is, positive or negative for the general public is not important, it already get his attention otherwise it will not been here published.......
I did not see anything wrong, if it was a dress line and two women did this so what ! Or a man and a woman, black white any color. I was looking at the great background and home and the suits looked great. Wake up people gay men kiss and have the same love and caring for all people in relationships and I must be the only straight roman catholic who does not give a damn. As long as your kind and caring person and love life and wishing for hate to stop then your welcome to my world. But note you live this life once so treat it well and stop the hate.
Oh no, im sooooo dcared! What? They're going to hell for having a preference in lovers? That's f****d up that people are getting mad about it...
I don't give a s**t whatever they do until and unless they provide us fine quality of products :P
I am really impressed that a company finally has stepped forward and not let the negativity dictate what their choices should be in their advertising. Right on! I love it! There will always be ignorant people and people who hate but I hope most of us want to move forward to understanding and tolerance.
Seems like the very fiber of some men's masculinity is being threatened, eh? Those who don't like it can leave. They probably lack fashion sense, too!
Why do people automatically jump from homosexuality to b********y???
if a straight couple were hugging or kissing or being intimate in any way i don't think people would be causing such a fuss about it. but one of the kisses was a bit too intimate whether they were straight or not
An advertisement that is targeting only male gay people is IMHO the wrong kind of advertisement because it excludes all the rest of the potential male clients.
I think no matter if it's same sex or not, why do we need to use sex to sell? I mean, when I put on a suit the last thing I am thinking about is slamming my tongue down someones throat. In all honesty, the advertisers do this, not for tolerance, but for sensationalism. They WANT to be controversial, antagonistic, etc. because it drives up the exposure of the advert. The LBGT crowd are just being used as a tool for them to increase revenues.
It doesn't bother me in the slightest except how randomly placed everything seems to be. The pictures themselves in my opinion are not appealing to look at and not because there is men touching and kissing each other in them. The suits are nice, the men look great but it all just looks so awkward and forced and just straight random and not in a good way. Idk if it was the photographer or the shots they randomly chose to use in the end. Or maybe they were going for something I just don't understand. I also think its a bit extreme and over the top to much but meh if its what they want who am I to say anything about it. But for what they are advertising it is unnecessary to show them so intimate. Its not like lingerie or something. It shouldn't bother people that its 2 men, the awful pictures is what people should be cringing at.
The website has the images in a different order. Much better there imho.

As a straight men (and I have absolutely nothing against gay people) I find these pictures totally not appealing. So as a commercial it's a complete failure unless it's geared primarily towards gay men. On the other hand it might just a brilliant attempt to exploit global media...
You can tell what generation I am from by my attitude towards public display of sexual expression. I don't like to see flaunting of ANY sexual expression that goes beyond non-sexual touching; not even kissing, other than the closed-mouth greeting peck on the cheek. Doesn't matter if it is hetero- or homosexual; sexual expressions should be in private, not in public.
But wait....Are they advertising sex or suits? What are all these kisses and touches for? who wears a suit just to do that? i'm thankful that we don't have this company where i come from, otherwise nobody would even as much as ask for the prices
They wouldn't want you as a customer, so don't trouble your little head about it. Oh, and anyone who's thick enough not to have noticed that sex sells really isn't worth responding to.

Your other part seems to not hold water either, as it appears many people, myself included, like these ads, and the subject matter.

Your other part seems to not hold water either, as it appears many people, myself included, like these ads, and the subject matter.
