Someone Noticed These Cookbooks Have Very Weird Covers, And Now The Whole Twitter Is Shook
Have you ever taken a look at the cover of a cookbook rather than the recipes within? Don’t get me wrong, not all of them deserve to be hidden from the public, but Brooklyn-based sound artist Mike Rugnetta has noticed a ridiculously funny trend, and everyone on Twitter just couldn’t ignore it.
“My wife (who is a very capable slicer of bell peppers) and I were thinking about getting an instant pot,” Mike told Bored Panda. “I was searching through Amazon, trying to find which was the right one, googling around for advice. My guess is that since my history was lousy with instant pot searches, everywhere I went I got served ads and product recommendations related to it. Over a couple days, I started to realize that the cookbooks I was being shown had something in common.”
Turns out, many cooking-focused publishers believe women can’t operate without the help of a man. In the photos, however, neither the women nor men look pleased with how scrupulously the photographers have arranged their bodies.
“It seems worth noting that people (understandably) react with frustration to depictions of dudes getting handsy while women only ever cook dinner,” Mike said. “[They] also react with surprise to the homogeneity of the cover models; certainly many different kinds of people cook for two, maybe put a few more of them on these covers?”
But why are these covers so consistently terrible? Heated debates on the social network have the whole internet looking for a logical explanation. “If a strong man does not stabilize a woman while she cooks, the recoil of a knife will lift her off the ground,” one person guessed.
Scroll down to read perfectly reasonable explanations why a man is a necessary ingredient to a well-cooked meal and write your own versions in the comments below!

A guy accidentally found these cookbook covers and thought something was not quite right
After further investigation, Twitter users have decided this trend is a lot more popular than it should be
And by ‘a lot ‘we mean A LOT
Everyone quickly expressed their confusion
Some even tried improving the covers
And others simply focused on the bright side
Unfortunately, my wife and I are close to killing each other if we cook together. There's no way I'd get that close to her when she's cutting something. My survivial insticts won't let me.
I think the one who order those cover is a little too obsesed with the clay scene from ghost... XD
Those poor women in these kind of ads. They are always creepy-smiling but you know deep down, they are dying on the inside. Like Melania Trump.
If you really wanted a "real" photo of couples cooking, you'd have them both chopping or stirring while also simultaneously pinching each other's behinds. Well, that's how it works in our house anyway...
The last time my husband harassed me in the kitchen like that, he ended up with shredded cheese poured into his underwear 🤣
They are weird, but so are all stock photos. Trying to make a political statement out of it is weirder.
I think a lot of the reactions are to the absurd impracticality of the poses rather than a latent political statement. Slicing a vegetable is not a two-person job, and it would be annoying and nerve-wracking to have someone - male or female - clinging onto the person cutting. I agree with you that all stock photos are weird.
Load More Replies...My hubs and I cook together every day. He has only ever put his arms around me during cooking if he needed to reach past me to grab something, or occasionally to hug me, which I like. Tonight I think we'll try the joint chopping to see if it improves the flavor of our meal. Who knows, maybe we're missing something.
haha! only if the blood from the eventual cut is considered adding to the flavor...lol... I could not chop anything while someone had their hand over mine like that!
Load More Replies...Not only interchangeable couples, but it is also always the same pot!
Yep... because Instant Pot is the brand publishing the books...
Load More Replies...Times change: When Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze did it the same way in Ghost everyone was enthusiastic...
I did some pottery lessons a long time ago and I could really have used some extra help from Patrick Swayze when trying to throw pots! :-D
Load More Replies...I guess I have to explain: I'm that guy! I'm the one that usually cooks so I undarstand. He's reaching for the knife and yells "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY KITCHEN!"
My wife NEVER cuts anything without behind her cutting along. We also like playing "Unchained Melody" while we do that.
I'm confused... they all have the same name, too, and same general cover layout. Isn't it just a case of the same really unimaginative editor having a hand in all of them? Or a series of books that are meant to look very similar?
I'm not allowed to cook with pot anymore, not since the kiddies birthday cake episode...............
What the *&^% is an "Instant Pot"? it is either a slow cooker or a pressure cooker but I can't tell. Help, anyone?
Attribute not to malice what can more easily be explained by incompetence.
Oh jeeze..I don't even know why I opened this post..who cares, really. All the c**p going on in the world and everyones on twitter talking about covers of cookbooks...wah wah
I'd rather read about this silliness than "all the c**p going on in the world". At least this makes me giggle . The other makes me depressed.
Load More Replies...So, nobody wonders why it's called Instant Pot? All they're concerned about is the photo?
who said that they where it just was a stupid friggin photo of 2 actors PAID to try to act romantic.
Load More Replies...YOU'RE ALL MAKING THIS MORE COMPLICATED THAN IT IS !!! Stop reading into something that isn't there. Man, woman cooking together, posing for the camera ... how hard can it be ? Look at most ANY ad featuring people and the pose frequently makes no sense ... except it's JUST A POSE ! Get a life.
Sorry. Can’t. I sold it to some guy on candy crush.
Load More Replies...A man hugging the woman he's with from behind? That's sexist! When one of my old girlfriends hugged me (a guy) from behind? Well, that was sexist too! Good lord, BoredPanda actually had a post praising an online cartoon, wherein one of the running jokes was that the woman liked to peg the man. Of course everyone on Bored Panda thought that was great, and actually I found it amusing too. But if you love that how can you be mad at a man hugging a woman from behind? The woman ramming a dildo in the dude's a**s is fine, but the man hugging her from behind is some sort of horrible subjugation of women? This is why people voted for Trump. This is why most men hate the Democratic Party. Not me, I'm a man who strongly disfavors Trump, voted for Hillary and votes Democratic. But this is why men vote for Trump, stupid s**t like this.
Am I missing something? It seems that on the Tyler Smith book, there is a close-up underneath the two covers that does not portray what is happening in the original picture.
Not only do these men hover, but the women don’t know how to cut a pepper properly. Have none of them ever watched a cooking program? You don’t cut peppers like that. They will roll around or get squashed.
It's not supposed to demonstrate a useful technique, dumass. It's a posed cover picture that supposed to present the woman in the forefront (most likely to purchase the product) with the man feigning participation and admiration that the women desire.
This just looks SO old-fashioned. :') (and yeah, we have a tiny kitchen, I'd also kill my bf if he would try to help, and the other way around XD).
I think that last picture is her metaphorical warning to quit messing with her while she's trying to cook, or else.
So the men in the house are the only ones who know how to cook, and yet the women are the ones most commonly staying at home preparing meals? Honestly, I wouldn't be able to do anything with someone leaning over my back…
Is this just about women being angry and jealous because they can't cook? I see nothing weird in this. I'm a female who cooks, every man in my family cooks, if you don't know how to cook and are a female than you're 100% will be a worse mother than one which can cook. Women cry about sandwich, guess what, that's not cooking,I as a toddler could make a sandwich.
Some people just HAVE to be pissed off about something. Can never accept something for it is,... have to read political nonsense into EVERYTHING!
Trust me dudes, you should have opted for the model that already knows how to cook.
Life is now nothing but an ongoing Jerry Springer show. Except weak titles like "I cooked with your husband and we made a book" and "I was going to let my wife cook but I would have been deemed sexist, even though she is a way better cook than me, because I burn toast". This comment will possibly annoy someone. Don't be annoyed there was no harm intended at all.
If my husband tried these "moves" on me when we cook, he'd be dead from a stab wound! I'm not the cook in our family (He is and always has been our chief "chef"--34 yrs. together baby!). I ask for his advice if and when I decide to cook, but that is all! He KNOWS better than to be looking over my shoulder as I can't stand that from anyone (I've even told off my boss for doing it!). So the kitchen is a "no-go" zone for anyone if I'm in there doin' my thing.
When my husband and I cook together there is usually much more of, "Will you get out of my way?" from both of us.
Maybe it's meant to be sexy like in Ghost! Haha Ohh so intimate. https://youtu.be/HvyCMgAajqk?t=82
The blonde in top right ad should have perhaps touched her roots up before the shoot. Oh no wait!!! They want it to look as natural as possible.
They are just trying to depict two people cooking together with these awful photos.
It's a book cover, nothing more. You don't need to read anything into it, it illustrates two people cooking together. It's not a political statement.
I totally thought the pot cookbook was for something else altogether - very disappointing
I don't like anyone around when I'm cooking. The only time they get to see my masterpiece is when it's on the table and ready.
My ex used to do this to me when I was cooking and sometimes when I was cleaning. Occasionally he would criticize my technique and show me the "right way" to do it, but mostly he was just at his most amorous and clingy when I was cooking and doing household chores. I'm pretty sure it was just him trying to get me to do that stuff more since he never acted like that otherwise. Or maybe he just had a thing for maids. Whatever the reason, it was extremely irritating.
I don't understand the issue, its a cookbook for two... and they show two people? If it said "instantpot cookbook for two" and then had Only a picture of a woman- then maybe being confused by it would make sense.
The issue may be the fact that, if it happens to be a "cookbook for two", I would rather the men in the covers be actually cooking, not just showing emotional support like a weird puppeteer, standing behind the women. Depending on how you look at it, these covers either depict the men as useless morons or the women as incompetent people in need of basic instructions. Either way, it is problematic and the pictures just look funny to me.
Load More Replies...I don't see nothing wrong with that pictures. Men tuck vegetables better and faster. And they are better cooks. These are simple facts. :) So?
It says "FOR TWO" right on the cover. Settle down and stop desperately looking for something to be enraged about.
I cook for two all the time. That doesn't mean i need my partners help in holding the knife as i cut veggies...
