Artist Matthew Cox from Philadelphia, USA, creates fun embroidery art on monochrome radiographs. He uses colorful threads to brighten the transparent film. Flowers, superheroes, pop culture icons and even classics from Greek mythology come to life in his embroidery.
The contrast of these two materials redefines the roles of each and creates a unique combination. "By combining the cold, blue, medical x-ray plastic with the colorful, decorative and tactile embroidery line, each object is removed from its original intent and creates a new entity," says Cox. "Manipulating these media also gives me the opportunity to comment on the growing presence of photography in contemporary art, introducing work on the speed, smoothness of the film."
The artist considers the radiographs as cold and emotionless objects, while the sewing brings the idea of caring and care, which enable healing of injured people.

I'm always amazed at what people can think of doing and it's so absolutely awesome !!
jewelry... jewelry everywhere! I would let my rad-tech redo every single one of them (not that they would present me these in the first place)
I agree, this isn't allowed to happen really...all jewellery should be removed...
See the good side of things.....even if you've got a really bad fracture or somethin
I think it's odd that so many of the x-rays include jewelry, coins, etc. For what purpose were these taken? Even in case of trauma I can't imagine a tech not removing a patient's watch...it obscures a great deal of the wrist.
With the necklaces, sometimes you just don't see them. In over a decade of doing the job, it's happened to me before.
Load More Replies...I'm guessing all of pictures are from scrap pile since all have artifacts or bad pictures?
I was thinking exactly that, lol. As an x ray tech, all those artifacts are driving me nuts! 😂
Load More Replies...I️ love these! I️ wonder what a studio display would look like though? Hanging and backlit? I️ almost wish they had an embroidered border on some of them to "tighten" or contain the image but overall, great job! Love the mixed media idea!
I love these, but I dislike how all these people complain how the person who took the x-ray is so lazy by not taking off the jewelry. They could be in ER or has a hard to take off earring or piercing.
Interesting idea. I liked the Ganesh image. I can't help but wonder about the people in these X-rays and what happened with them.
I like those failed x-rays and jewelry in them. Especially the head profile one where you can see both earrings!
Not to be too critical but the Casper ghost head seemed ghoulish to me. The X-ray doesn't look right. Is it human?
I find these neat, but in some way lacking. No disrespect to the work which was a great idea. Not sure what I don't like about it. But really cool ideas.
