Doctors Post Pics Where They Sleep At Work To Defend Med Resident Caught Asleep
1.9Mviews
After a Mexican blog posted a picture of a medical student sleeping behind a desk at a hospital in Monterrey, Mexico, and attacked her for not doing her job. Doctors around the world leaped to the defense of this medical schooling victim by posting pictures of themselves caught sleeping at work during some of their most grueling shifts. These images are going viral under the hashtag #YoTambienMeDormi (“I've also fallen asleep” in Spanish). Mind you, not only working as a doctor is a particularly demanding job, but they also have to undergo laborious medical studies, often asking the aspiring doctor to live the student life for up to 7 years.
In the 1980s, a high-profile case involving the death of a girl named Libby Zion at a hospital staffed by exhausted doctors led to the drafting of the Libby Zion Law. This law limits NY physicians' work hours per week to “only” 80, showing just how overworked some of our doctors are. Comparing that to the usual 40 working hours per week and doing the math, it seems like the doctors, who are so often responsible for people's lives, have to work practically without any rest or sleep.
More info: BBCA blogger snapped these pics of a sleeping resident in Mexico at 3 a.m.
The writer criticized the young resident, saying that "doctors are obliged to do their work"
There were "dozens of patients who need care," the blogger continued
Mexican doctor Juan Carlos responded by posting a tweet with the hashtag #YoTambienMeDormi (or “I've also fallen asleep”)
Soon, hundreds of other doctors began defending the resident
Doctors around the world are often severely overworked
Some doctors work 36-hour shifts or 80-hour work weeks!

After A 24 Hour Day Of Duty
agreed! this is a very stressful job! i lives are in their hands daily i am surprised they can sleep at all! give em a break! they are human
Load More Replies...Im a nurse and fall asleep all the time... It's an exhausting career. Don't talk unless you've walked a day in our work lives.
If I have to have an overworked Dr care for me, I want the one who had the power nap.
Right on http://juan.com.ph/culture/8599/?fb_comment_id=fbc_925689440807550_926573760719118_926573760719118#feee317a
Load More Replies...In my nursing school class we had an exercise in relaxation and focus. 92 people went to sleep. Yes, it can, and does happen.
I would much prefer to have a doc who has had a power nap than one who hasn't! In fact, 20-minute power naps should be mandatory!
Agree http://juan.com.ph/culture/8599/?fb_comment_id=fbc_925689440807550_926573760719118_926573760719118#feee317a
Load More Replies...All of them are humans!!!!! We have to respect them!!!! They are doing all their best to save us!!!! Yes!!!! They must rest a little !!!!
It's ridiculous to think anyone could stay awake or alert when working like docs & residents work. As a Narcoleptic, I can relate.
Load More Replies...If people needed medical attention, why didn't the waste of life blogger wake up the resident instead of taking pictures of her sleeping?
True http://juan.com.ph/culture/8599/?fb_comment_id=fbc_925689440807550_926573760719118_926573760719118#feee317a
Load More Replies...Let them sleep! Their job is is incredibly demanding and the human mind/body works best with proper rest. Doctors orders:)
I work nights and there are some nights we don't get s break so when we do get time is it not better to be rested than overworked & exhauste
My sister was in ICU for a long period of time while I was studying for my exam in year 12. After doing a ridiculously long shift the ICU doctor sat with me to help me study for my psychology exam. I will never forget her. Doctors in hospitals do an amazing job with limited resources. Who is anyone to judge them for napping. That small sleep might be the one thing that helps them to save the next person's life.
As a nurse we call doctors at all hours day and night for issues regarding clients/ residents.Walk in their shoes before passing judgment.
so much preffer doc s to take a nap when they are tirred , than giving me wrong meds or answers cause they have already worked for 30 hours..... let them sleep, better they take a nap than giving wrong meds or dianosis, cause we all know they are overworked...
I would rather they sleep than try to work on a patient when they can't even keep their eyes open
I know that DR's are humans and the their bosses need to know that to, so theirs hours be looking to it and for god sake, have compassion
They are NOT the only ones taking care of the patient. Humans sleep- they are human. Do you want a sleep deprived MD ? No!
My doc slept in the room next to me prior to delivering our son. And I was glad he did, so he could be there for me 100% when I needed him.
Doctors are human we all make mistakes theirs are just more visible . Let he she who has no sin cast the first stone !!!!!!!?

Load More Replies...I think I'd rather have a doc that has maybe grabbed a few min./1/2 hr./hrs. nap than one who is so totally exhausted he/she can't function. I am sure they are not alone in the hosp. so while they are grabbing some zzzz's there are surely other medical personnel available to call them in an emergency....geez people...they're not robots...
I'm a nurse and I've been known to take a power nap during my breaks. Why not? No one works nonstop all day, every day, for 12-14 hours.
leave them alone.... much preffer they take a nap when they need it , than having wrong meds or worst cause they are tirred from 30 hours work before they see me.....
I work night shift up to 50 60 hours a week its grilling a nap to refresh u so u can do ur job what's the harm..
Hence why the preference of profession is a great match. I can go a long time without sleep, mainly because I hardly have a choice with intermittent insomnia.
Esa es la realidad d tds los q abrazamos la medicina y juramos el JURAMENTO DE HIPOCRATE"
Even my website http://www.helpusleep.com can't help a doctor who has been up all night.
No tengo problema en que duerman siempre y cuando ya hayan cumplido con la ronda y atendido a los pacientes.. que duerman para relajarse y pensar bien en lo que hacen...
When my dad was in med school, one of the first survival skills he attained was being able to catnap anywhere, standing up, leaning against a wall. Doctors have always caught naps where ever they can.

If I need a doctor, I want one that has had a chance to rest enough to do the best possible job for me. Nap when you get a chance, I don't want a zombie dr.
I'm feeling very tired right now, but i cant even imagine how i would feel after working so hard for so many hours in a job that requires such concentration. i just want to put blankets over them.
I can't speak for anyone else but I hope that my Dr. gets lots of sleep when and wherever he can.. Lack of sleep interferes with so many things like the ability to concentrate, So people get over it... Rest on ;)
They are human beings just like all of us , they work long hrs , give them a break , don't you have somethings else better to do than posting this .
They are human beings just like everyone else , they are not machines designed to keep on moving 24/7 they work long hrs while some of you who sre passing judgments sleep in your beds and collect unemployment, on welfare you name it , give these doctors a break .
I think if they have a duty they should do it. what if other public services where asleep on the job. If you dont like the job dont do it.
Mr Ollie Benson, if they choose medicine is obviously because they like the job, as they make it pretty hard and long to get the degree in the first place. As an MD going through intern year, believe me, I can relate, and yes, we do our duties, which include Do No Harm first, and if your body is telling you to get a power nap, you do it! You would want the Dr with the power nap to treat you, not the sleep deprived one! WE ARE HUMANS, NOT MACHINES
Load More Replies...I see on head up in back on the right :-) lol
Load More Replies...Their audacity to comment clearly shows they didn't have to bust their chops enough at uni or their job doesn't entail much sacrifice
These doctors didn't chose a job. They chose a calling and it takes a lot out of them personally, and their families and relationships.
Load More Replies...Do you have any clue what kind of student loans they have? They are not paid ENOUGH. Now politicians...there's some gross overpayment if you want to complain about someone.

I wish I had pictures of me in full chemical warfare gear, snoring through a gas mask, under a desk. Awaiting triage patients.
