“In recognition of his outstanding work as a teacher and mentor to University of Texas students, and with respect to his career as an award-winning actor and producer, Matthew McConaughey has been appointed as a professor of practice at the Moody College of Communication starting in the fall 2019 term.”

This is how the University of Texas announced the news that one of its favorite sons will be returning full-time to teach the next generation of film students, taking the Script to Screen film production class starting autumn 2019.

Having completed his own Bachelor degree there in 1993, McConaughey has been a regular on-campus since he began serving as a visiting instructor in 2015.

In 2016 he made the headlines by driving students home in a golf cart as part of the university’s safe-ride program and has since helped to develop the curriculum for the Script to Screen course.

McConaughey’s experience of working on over 50 films – including “Dazed and Confused,” “A Time to Kill,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Dallas Buyers Club,” provides a unique, behind-the-scenes view of each stage of a film’s production. Alright!

“It’s the class I wish I would have had when I was in film school. Working in the classroom with these students gives me a chance to prepare them,” McConaughey told UT News. “Making movies, turning words on paper into film, is both a science and art – no matter the time or generation. The elements of truth and genuine joy for the process are timeless. That will always be our classroom focus.”

McConaughey has earned respect among college leadership for his personal investment in student success and his willingness to work with students beyond the classroom.

“He has a passion for teaching, and for all things cinematic, that is palpable, even infectious,” said Noah Isenberg, chair of the Department of Radio-Television-Film.
