Whenever I traveled to different cities and districts in Japan, I searched out the manhole covers to photograph. I upload my photo onto Photoshop and I like to think that as I create the piece, it’s like I’m lifting off the cover to reveal a wonderful world underneath. A world overlooked; perhaps not stopped and appreciated in all the small details. I mean, we walk over manhole covers. We drive over them. They’re dirty. Why go to the effort of designing something that’s going to get dirty? Because we can! And it brings a little joy and delight to those that see it.
My Montages are looking through, seeing beyond. Through the black silhouette of the manhole design, there’s a world of vivid color. It reminds me of the round windows in Zen gardens, or stained glass windows. Luminous!
