Employee Quits, Gets A Text From Manager Saying “We Will See How Long You Can Take Care Of Your Lovechild Without Us”, Drama Ensues

Interview With Author
ADVERTISEMENT

If you ask someone what the most important thing in their life is, odds are that they’ll say it’s their family. It’s something you’re supposed to say, but it’s also how many people genuinely feel. At the end of the day, family is all we’ve got. And no amount of free coffee and other company perks is going to change that.

However, some holier-than-thou managers get incredibly angry when someone prioritizes their family over their job. Case in point, here’s what happened to redditor u/taecody, a home improvement store veteran with nearly a decade of experience. An assistant manager went on a massive power trip and harassed him and a few other employees, trying to make their life hell. Nasty rumors were spread about u/taecody, injustice abound!

Fortunately, everything had a happy ending. Definitely not for the gossiping, power-tripping manager, though! Whoops, spoilers. You’ll find the full story below, dear Pandas. Be sure to let us know what you thought of the whole ordeal after you’ve read everything. We’d really love to hear your opinion. It’s a long read, but the payoff is worth it. Grab yourself a mug of tea or a cup of coffee, and let’s go.

Redditor u/taecody was kind enough to answer Bored Panda’s questions about the entire situation. He told us that he’s very relieved that he’s moved on from his former job. “I have a lot more free time, and more time to sleep. My health has improved dramatically. I never realized how important rest can be. My new job has been a bit turbulent, but it’s finally settling down, and my new manager has been extremely gracious and willing to work with me,” they shared. Scroll down for the rest of our interview with the redditor and what they would have done differently.

They say that people quit because of their managers, not their jobs

Well, one manager, in particular, was making an employee’s life a living hell. Scroll down for the full riveting story

The employee realized that he finally had enough. It was the last straw

Bored Panda was interested to hear if u/taecody had any advice for other employees who find themselves in similar situations as he was in. According to him, you have to have other options available so you don’t feel trapped.

“The best thing I would suggest is to be ready to find new work whenever you feel the need to. Do not just put up with abuse. It’s hard, absolutely. But the emotional damage of management abuse at a job is nothing to sneeze at. But also, do not do what I did: a good bit of my reaction was emotional and a snap reaction. If I could change anything, I would have continued to work for a bit longer so that my finances were more stable,” the author of the story gave some spot-on advice. In short, keep your emotions in check, think strategically before making the decision to quit.

They believe that managers who do the right thing, not just the popular thing, earn the loyalty of their employees. “Especially in retail, doing the moral thing for your employees and customers might not always net you the most money, but it’ll gain you loyalty. Unfortunately, modern American retail has been hyper-specialized for efficiency and to make as much money as possible. Unfit managers know how to game that system,” they explained to Bored Panda.

“America needs to remember that there is no right way to family. Found family, blood relations, either way is fine, but they all deserve respect. No job is worth your relationship with your family. Cherish them,” they added.

Previously, Eddy Ng, the Smith Professor of Equity & Inclusion in Business at Queen’s University (formerly the James and Elizabeth Freeman Professor of Management at Bucknell University), spoke to Bored Panda about strong and weak leaders in the workplace.

According to the expert, strong leaders are those who are moral, principled, and do “the right thing.” Meanwhile, weak leaders only do the things that make them popular. What’s more, they’re prone to dithering.

“The notion of servant leadership is gaining attention in the workplace. Although it is associated with many of the strong leadership traits such as empathy, selflessness, and humility, the focus is on the leader’s propensity to serve (or support) their followers. Servant leaders empower and lift up followers (employees) to motivate and fuel their passion,” the professor said.

“Employees can manage that relationship to have work satisfaction. In this instance, employees need to communicate what they need (tools) or work conditions (autonomy) in order for them to perform optimally when working with a controlling boss. Employees need to convey what they can and are able to perform,” he said.

Even the store manager got in trouble

Here’s how some Reddit users reacted to the work story

Some people called out the weird dynamics between the author of the post and his friends

However, the OP didn’t see what was weird about it. Others backed him up

The assistant manager spread some rumors that u/taecody’s goddaughter, who he visits often and helps babysit, was secretly his lovechild. What’s more, the employee’s requests for time off were canceled.

But the last straw was when management kept harassing the employee to get back to work during a family emergency that was completely out of their control. The redditor had enough and quit. However, the manager mocked the employee, texting them, “We will see how long you can take care of your lovechild without us.”

It’s no surprise that the redditor got angry. Heck, the vast majority of us would probably blow our tops if this happened to us. The employee went on the warpath and began compiling evidence against the manager. What’s more, entire departments began quitting. And the manager lost her job. The last anyone saw of her was her sprinting towards her car to avoid the district staff.

WHo finds it weird to care about godkids? I have seven godsons, I'm "Aunt" Leo to them, and that's what *chosen* family is about. That ASM was merely an AS$. IMO.

I love this. That's how it is with me and my 2 best friends. I'm God mother to all of their children and while I'm not 100%, I'm pretty sure I'll never have children (I may adopt at a later time). But I don't feel it's a big deal because I have my God children and I love them to death (if I don't have kids, I'm just going to leave them and my baby sister everything when I finally pass away).I don't see what the problem is and think that people that think that's a problem are the weird ones.

Well this most certainly is a TLDR for me. Not to mention the stuff I did scan over seems a bit... unrealistic. People dream of mass quitting, but it doesn't really happen. Although, in todays market, maybe it does.

Yeah, the ASM was a jerk, however, you can't just keep calling in sick to your job day after day and expect to not have any issues. OP was wrong too, and could have actually been fired.

This! He said during the snow event they would need him for supplies, but couldn't he pick things up on his way home from work? Couldn't they drive his car and drop him off at work? OP just wanted days off (with his family) despite mentioning he had a vehicle that would allow him to get to work.

I'm calling BS on the entire story. First, an ASM can't fire anyone on the spot, it has to go through HR to protect the company legally. Second, while it isn't completely implausible some married guy moves in another guy with him and his pregnant wife, it seemed that this guy was actually the friend of the wife and THAT just seems odd. Third, he still worked the second job after going full-time, but was also still doing ALL of these other time intensive things, i.e. babysitting, overtime, etc. Just too many things seem odd with this...

My thing is also this...the most successful family situations are ones where several generations and extended family live under one roof. Grandparents help with the kids while mom and dad help with bringing in funds. Extended family helps to broaden the minds of the kids as not everyone has the same life experiences. One of the worst things the US Government did was force the break up of Native American families forcing the kids to Boarding Schools in order to strip them of their culture and breaking up the extended family norm.

An employee's personal life is no business of their employer unless it is interfering with their job or job performance. Some people should not be in a position of power take our former president for instance. People like that want everyone to do exactly what they say or else they'll be fired. It's all a power play to show people who's in charge. But when the shoes on the other foot they expect you to care & be understanding about their situation. I applaud this employee for sticking to their guns & he must be a good person for all the other employees to follow him in solidarity & quit their job as well. There's a lot of companies that need good employees to fill positions & are willing to work with you on your particular needs & are understanding of the fact that we all have families & sometimes need to take time off or for emergencies. Those are the people you want to work for. It may take time but I know you will be rewarded someday for your good work & ethics. Best of luck to you.

I only have one question - if OP had power at his apartment, and his friends staying there - why did he have to stay home from work? There's no law that says they must go home immediately when the power comes back on, and nothing to stop one of the adults from driving OP to work and dropping him off if they feel they'll need a vehicle to get supplies on any given day. Or, buy supplies when OP is not working, or from one of the many delivery services available these days. They could even order stuff from from a "major retailer" or grocery store, and OP pick it up on the way home. So, no, I don't buy the weeklong "family emergency". He just didn't like his job and didn't want to go. And I don't see the big deal about his closeness with his "family" or "niece". No one would say a word about it if a female friend stepped in to help with childcare.

Yep. Doesn't make any sense. OP is selfish, honestly. Strike one was that they couldn't have BOTH Thanksgiving and Christmas off for the 2nd year in a row?! If there was only 2 people in that department, that means the other person would have had to work every holiday whole OP worked none.

First off, NTA. Secondly, your family is the people that support and love you. In my case, most of my family is gone, and I don't have much contact with the ones left. I have friends who've stepped up and helped when I need it. Thirdly, sounds like ASM is either evangelical or has weird ideas about religion. Calling the baby a "lovechild", even though it wasn't, and firing the young girl for a Playboy piece of clothing? That's very old fashioned and suspect. Maybe part of the lawsuit should be religious discrimination, especially regarding the wearing of head scarves.

This story is very satisfying. The "love child" remark was such a dumb thing for her to say, how did she not realise that would backfire spectacularly. Although the part "Biggest mass quitting I've ever been part of" is a little alarming; how many has she been a part of??

I don't know if any of this is 100% true but one thing that may be truthful is the response from a home supply store (like home Depot and Lowes) if you choose to stay home in the snow. I can speak from working as a contractor at a home Depot store. They are the BUSIEST in bad weather. Everyone in the world shows up for shovels, salt, gravel and whatever else makes them feel better equiped to weather the weather. There was a big all hands on deck expectation, and one could absolutely expect to be fired for deciding to stay home.

This is incredulous. The ASM rode herself out on a rail. How did she ever reach this position to begin with? Sure true colors and all, but there's ALWAYS a hint of poison when one is trying to get promoted. The SM should equally be blacklisted from any position of power for culpability due to ignorance.

I would sue the company and I would sue the individual primarily because there were probably various complaints about her that the company did not act on immediately leading to this nuclear situation. And the Muslim individuals need to take her to court for civil rights violation as that is their religious and cultural right to wear their hijabs and by threatening their livelihood IE threatening to not allow them to work or work less because of that is a definite violation of their civil rights

how was this asm not already fired 4 discrimination of religions and ethnicities? They had fired some1 b4 4 sexist remarks so it seems that all that couldve been told to HR WAY b4 it ever got that far. Maybe the people who were harassed were 2 scared to come forward til after which is a real shame. I once worked a waitress job where id had enuff of bein screamed at and treated like dirt so I walked out but the next day asked 4 my job back and the owner said no, meanwhile there was a cook who had sexually assaulted ME (slapped my ass so hard it left a mark) then got drunk & proceeded to harass me in the dining rm after closing calling me a whore & trash and harassing the bartender tryin 2 start a fight, all while drunk and caught on camera yet he WASNT EVEN SUSPENDED! I decided I didnt even wanna wrk at a place that didnt give a s**t about its employees. They even brought back a manager whode been fired 3 times b4 4 threatening employees!

I worked at a store in a mall. my neighbor was manager and she got me the job. she had a bit of a drinking problem, but everyone loved her. she got an assistant manager from another store working at ours, and sadly, NO ONE liked the assistant. so when my friend was "under the weather" she knew hat I could open or close the store for her. this went on for a few months before the assistant mgr reported her to corporate. head honchos came out an interviewed everyone. when i was in there, they basically says the assistant was going to get my friends job on a temp basis, and if she didn't work out, I would be getting it. Needless to say, she was listening at the door. I got sick a week later and took 2 days off to recover. she called me the third day and told me to take one more day t recover. When i went in the next day, she looked at me and basically said "you quit, why are you here?" so I threw my nametag at her and walked out of the office. the 2 others working took one look at me, and

Willing to bet it was home depot. They openly treat staff so badly that customers notice it. I've witnessed employees getting yelled at and told to stop wasting time and get to work WHILE they're helping customers. They literally don't get two minutes to give directions to customers before a supervisor berates them for laziness. Makes me wonder what they do other than follow employees around.

So, what exactly was ASM's plan here? Harass everyone into quitting then tell everyone that they were fired so she seems in control and then fire anyone that catches her in a lie until a "bigger dog" from corporate shows up to figure out why almost an entire store's staff gets "fired" or quits at the same time?

Elmuchocapitano's comment about "takes a village" is true BUT these days we seldom know our village. A wave, a comment about weather.. is not "knowing A person" so people return to the sm group (nuclear) family. Because people stayed in the same home/apt & definitely stayed in same neighborhood. Then in the 1940s a planned push in America of Home Ownership! What better way to start the "Consumer Economy"❗The neighborhood was moved out of cities/towns to the suburbs (after WWII) so you need a car, & things for the house... & so on. But grown kids have to go where the jobs are but the family is not.Being SOCIAL by nature, people will seek (not every one) to find those they can form a closeness... attachment to; its more complicated than just desire & there is no sure fired way to guarantee its success, yet people do manage it successfully. Others don't see it is possible. But it does need to be Mutual✌

This is outrageous. As a night manager I do everything I can to help people in my department. I live 30 min from work and one person had a family emergency I just asked them to keep me informed and went and covered the last 2 hours of their shift. I tell them all if you have a problem come and talk to me or my boss. I do everything I can to help. It's hard to find good workers.

While I agree that ASM was a horrible power tripping manager there were 2 things that I felt were on the OP. FIRST: Expecting to get Thanksgiving & Christmas off working retail!!? I worked retail for 30 years & we were told every year, "Don't ask, not gonna happen" Of course the suck-ups could get off! Second: Admittedly maybe not possible, could the friend have driven OP's car dropping him off for work or OP taking friend to work on his way? But either way there were way too many issues to have made it work @ that store. I'm sure OP is much better off & so are the others. All the best for the future.

Okay my daughter worked for 2 big box stores for years, was the top seller of appliances not only for the state but for the country! She worked odd hours, helped with short staffing, overnight shifts for inventory, etc. But they insist on holding on to bad managers. This toxic manager in their employ was just moved from one store to another when the employees complained too much. I don’t think it’s weird that the poster is babysitting his godchild, however I do feel that it’s not good work ethic to miss work from your own job so that the baby’s parents can work and sleep. Seems a little odd. They need to find other babysitting arrangements. But that’s just my opinion. However, the ASM was a b***h and acted extremely unprofessional.

I had an issue at what I believe to be another of the home improvement chain in question stores in the northeast. I was repeatedly targeted and harassed by an ASM to the point that I lost my job because of this person. The kicker? I had gone to HR and they were doing an investigation but the HR guy had a heart attack and died and somehow his files magically disappeared. I had just enough documentation on my side to qualify for unemployment anyways. They don't care about their employees and will use them and then spit them out.

Poor people skills by the ASM for sure and you have to wonder how they got that position. Aside from that what a strange relationship with this friend. I have known my daughters since the day they were born and I love my son in laws to pieces as well as my grandchildren. I would never intrude on them by moving in with them especially right after them getting married. I would not have inserted myself into their home after bringing their babies home either and I am the grandmother! They know I'm a phone call away to help. Wonder why they moved after getting married? This guy moved after them? Hmmm

Before I had my children I had been told I would never be a mother. I had a very close friend who was a single mom. We shared a place for a while. I think of ALL her children as my "other kids" we had kids at the same time . my Dr told me the pressure of wanting kids had caused me to miscarry in the past that having "twin pregnancies" with my friend had reduced my stress. No lie I would do ANYTHING for her kids. Heck I did at one time quit a very profitable job with travel because someone had broken into the shed she had Christmas gifts in for the kids I hitchhicked from Florida to NJ to make sure that those kids had Christmas! I am closer to those children (now adults) than I am to my blood nieces and nephews! Family is NOT just who you are born into but those who are there for you and you are there for them!

I live 30 min from work and one person had a family emergency I just asked them to keep me informed and went and covered the last 2 hours of their shift.

Hmmm
