High-Paid Yet Freebie-Loving Top Manager Comes For Office Checkup, Sees Some Pizzas Bought For Staff And Steals It All

All people love freebies. It’s probably just inherent in human nature, so even a very rich person is unlikely to refuse to receive something for free. Even if by doing so, they offend other people who also hoped for a freebie – after all, they could very well buy everything, unlike others.

World history is well aware of examples when people from the Forbes list saved on toilet paper and ate in cheap cafes – and there are a lot of such examples. Most likely, it’s just some kind of psychological syndrome – but sometimes there are people who simply do this out of banal human harm.

For example, like a character in this story, which is described in the Reddit Antiwork community, and in less than a day has collected nearly 44.7K upvotes and around 2.4K comments. People, of course, felt sorry for the Original Poster and his colleagues, and this situation, unfortunately, is quite common.

More info: Reddit

The Original Poster works in an office which, one day, was inspected by a group of higher-ups

So, the OP works in the office of a large company with many branches, and it happened so that a commission consisting of top management representatives came to their office. As the OP themselves say, it was just a routine check to catch someone doing something wrong.

The HR manager told all the employees that she bought pizza for them and left it in the breakroom

The OP doesn’t say if anyone was caught – but it doesn’t really matter. The main thing is that when the bosses were in the office, the HR manager told the employees that she bought pizza for them for lunch from a local famous brand pizzeria. In general, all the workers were looking forward to being fed…

When the lunch break came, it turned out that the district manager just took all the pizza

Imagine their disappointment when the lunch break came, everyone rushed to the breakroom – and found out that all the pizza boxes had simply disappeared! People started to investigate – and it turned out that the district manager, before leaving the office, just went to the breakroom and took all the pizza with him! All four or five boxes!

Image source: Kyle Sorkness (not the actual photo)

All the employees were simply devastated, as the OP admits. According to their own words, their work is quite difficult, and for most people, this pizza was the only joy of the day. And now they had been deprived of this joy. Moreover – deprived by a person who earns about $250K a year, and who can afford as much pizza as he actually wants.

Commenters expressed their sympathy to the OP and told that this kind of behavior is similar for most top managers

Most people in the comments, of course, sympathized with the OP and his co-workers, admitting that the district manager simply stole pizza from his own employees. However, as some commenters write, such inappropriate behavior, alas, is generally inherent in the higher-ups.

For example, top managers often order food for themselves in the breakroom when they come to the office for checkups, and leave behind an incredible mess after dinner. However, they probably never think that the cleaners are also their company’s employees, and that they are leaving extra work for them.

We believe that you have something to say about this story, and perhaps you yourself have had to deal with something similar from your higher-ups. In any case, feel free to write your comment – as always, it’s highly appreciated!

Wealthy people don't become wealthy by being nice to others. Always remember that.

Exactly!! I was going to say the same thing. They didn't get rich by tossing money away or by being generous.

We used to chip in for snacks for our office. The company president started eating a lot of them so the manager rolled the snacks into the office supplies order.

OMG. I have to admit I love the response of giving his name to a car warranty company. I have to remember this. Its petty and vindictive and I can think of so many who deserve it.

A friend that frames high end homes was asked for a discount by the owner. He told them, "I don't do free stuff for rich people!".

In all likelihood, the pizza wasn't the only thing that was taken from them. Although it's taboo in most work places, everyone should compare their salaries and see if they can assess that thief's contributions to the company to see if some of his wealth needs to be diverted and redistributed to his subordinates. In addition to that, the very next time the higher-ups return for one of these "surprise" inspections, they should all get up and walk out then let HR explain why they felt disrespected.

You do know that a*****e manager has a boss, don’t you? Document everything and rat him out to his own boss. If the higher up boss is a halfway decent person, they’ll chew Pizza Thief a new a*****e, and deduct lunch for that entire staff for a year from his paycheck!

One time I was a housekeeper at a big hotel. They provided a cafeteria style lunch for employees prepared by the hotel food service. It was inexpensive but filling. I thought it was a great perk until I forgot something in the break room one day. I returned to retrieve what I forgot and discovered the head of the hotel and the office staff eating lobster. I got a bad attitude after that and got fired.

I fail to see your problem. Did you want lobster every day? Lobster isn't even very filling. You got good, inexpensive food. So what if someone else got lobster? Someone else gets lobster every day that you don't.

I personally received a package with wine, pasta and a good morel sauce. Had to give it to the CEO for the Christmas gift table. Was OK for me, I like to share with my colleagues. Only the pasta reached the table, wine and sauce "disappeared".

This story is very suspicious. There are no names, so it's impossible to verify, and it's very implausible. Why would a district manager, known to all, walk out of an office carrying four boxes of pizza from the breakroom that had been left there for the employees in full view of everyone? It doesn't make sense. One man can't eat four pizzas, and it had been sitting out for a while. On top of that, a district manager would know that would hurt his reputation. I don't buy it. I don't think this story is true.

Why are you here? Every story here has no names or uses fake names, is impossible to verify etc. Instead of being a waste of space here just move on to a different part of the internet that has what you want.
