I don't think I have been in a supermarket in Europe where they didn't have a chair. And most small shops as well (but sometimes not, it the area behind the register is very small, but then the cashier is not expected to spend all day there.)

One of those things I don't understand about the US (and Poland for that matter). In Germany cashiers mostly sit but they can stand if they want.

yep. i had to quit my last job because they moved me to being a cashier without actually telling me that's what they were doing, and the front-end manager was a tyrant who didn't even let people have water there, and vehemently reinforced the "if you can lean, you can clean" bull$hit. i have ehlers-danlos, and standing still for 4+ hours with my knees locked would leave me incapable of getting out of bed the next day, it was so painful. aldi's is doing the best job, all their cashiers have stools.

Very right. This applies not only to pregnant women, but to anyone who is forced to stand eight hours a day. Around the corner from me, for example, there is a so-called health food store, whose slimy yuppie manager, however, requires the mostly older ladies who work there to stand on their feet all day. He then sits back comfortably in his show-off car. I am aware of many such cases in which, among other things, leg edema was the result of such working conditions.

If there is nothing wrong with pregnancy and mother feels fine , what is wrong with that? I was working until 37th week. I'm from country that has very nice maternity leave (year paid one, next three years unpaid but with all other benefis) and when woman does not feel good during pregnancy, she gets easly sick leave. But its not mandatory

My guess: It's the USA (considering their stance on workers rights and their healthcare system, that would be enough for an explanation). Of course, it could be another country with a similar system and policies when it comes to worker rights

I worked with a lady who went into labor at work. She hung out until the contractions were close enough and then had a coworker take her to the hospital.

An honest answe to an honest question, if OP has not been there a year, she is not covered under FMLA (family medical leave act). If she has been there a year she is entitled to twelve weeks off, unpaid. 12 weeks that start the day you leave, so more time before = less time with the baby after. And again, unpaid.

I was working up until labor with my first two and i'm not american. Had to stop at 36 wks this time due to covid (40wks now). If you don't have any health issues its actually good to stay active and it keeps your mind busy - nothing wrong with it!

I'm 36 weeks today and planning on working until I go into labor, which is pretty normal in the U.S. I'm fortunate enough that I have enough PTO saved up that I can take maternity leave, so I will be taking time off after the baby is born, but it's not unusual for women who don't have that option to come back literally as soon as they can after birth.

If you're anything like the pregnant women I've known (including my wife) it's actually desirable to keep busy and working right up until giving birth. Obviously if you have complications (or even just want to) it's totally fine to take it easy but that's not how most of the women I've known choose to handle it.

In Belgium the law requires only 1 week prior to the supposed date of birth. You can take up more, but the leave is so short that few women take up more than that 1 week. You'd have to combine all your overtime and holidays and possibly some unpaid leave for a proper maternity leave.
