It’s no secret that getting along with management people is not always a given, but rather a gift. They often put too much pressure on the backs of already stressed employees, making it a perfectly toxic workplace environment to brew and prosper. And in some more extreme cases, it gets passive-aggressive, to say the least.

The corner of Reddit known by the name which screams sarcasm, Thanks Management, is a safe space to talk about hard things. According to the subreddit’s description, it’s a place made for “Showcasing notices from imperious middle managers, owners, landlords, school administrators, mean bosses, and overall pedants. Bonus points for misspellings, exclamation marks, threats over petty bullshit.”

And they mean it. From evil posters put up in the staff room as if nothing happened to the implementation of very questionable tools that are supposed to boost productivity at the expense of people, these are some take-notes-kids examples of how not to run your business.

Exactly. What if I have a 1986 VW Syncro. Pretty good condition. Management says that I might COMMIT FRAUD BECAUSE ITS AN OLD CAR. What the eff indeed.

How about, "I consider my personal financial decisions and purchases a private matter. I understand your concerns about employees with high debt burdens; rest assured that my frugality in not replacing a working vehicle is a sign that I am not financially over-extending myself or taking on unnecessary debt. If the company wants to ensure a certain vehicle standard as part of managing appearances for our customers/clients, please issue me a company car."

Holy s**t! So inappropriate. I keep my cars until they die. None of their business. Also, so they think that if you have an older car or any financial distress you are going to steal or commit fraud. Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like Wall street commits more fraud than any of the rest of us so they can pay for their brand new cars. Sick

Unfortunately, it’s a common practice in the U.S. I’ve been turned down from a job because of my poor credit. They didn’t give two shits that it was all medical bills. How getting stuck with $375k in hospital bills my health insurance wouldn’t pay for equates to poor financial decision making is beyond me. The joys of being American.

Dear Sirs or Madams, I am so very glad you ask. As you may gave noticed I, in fact, had more expensive car when I started working here. The problem 7s, it kept beeing burglared on the company parking lot 3-4 times a week. My need to downgrade my car, and my problematic financial situation arose from the need to frequwntly replace the windows of my car. While I am in no position to tell you how to do your job, one possible solution to this issue might be to pay your employees adequat, so sthey do not have to break into the cars of their coworkers and steal their belongings. Of course I understand how busy you are, but maybe, if you would mind your own buissness, you would not have to mind mine. Sincerely Shitty car owner Also here is my two weeks notice

My own experience with HR people, seems to be three kinds: --Those who are there because they like working with people, and will go out of their way to make life better for everyone --Those who will do the absolute bare minimum of work because they don't care about people or the job --And those who think it gives them power over people and enjoy tormenting them whenever and however they can think of an excuse to do so.

That's crazy. I kept my first car, a little Holden Barina, for 18 years, and my husband kept his car for 18 years as well! We could have afforded to buy a car over $100,000 for cash at any time in the last 5 years.

Time to look for another job .... What a pair of sanctimonious assholes !! As an aside, I worked as a private, freelance Chef for many, many years in mansions, large houses, estates and for a whole bunch of seriously wealthy people. Two stand out, the first was a lovely couple who had 3 large estates in England, Scotland (which included a manor house and a castle) and one in France ; Their car of choice, which was very well looked after mechanically but looked like a wrecker, was a 20 year old Renault Estate car with sagging seats and smelled truly awful. The second was an extremely wealthy German count who dressed like a tramp and would spend hours hanging round the kitchen to try and figure out how to cook (he never learned and was completely inept). His main choice of transport for the immediate area was a ratty 50cc moped and for longer trips a top of the range 1956's Mercedes 'Grosser' that, as far as I could tell, hadn't been cleaned for 20 years .....

First, unless my car is a toxic rolling turd eyesore, it’s none of their business. Second, a person can have excellent credit, become suddenly and unexpectedly unemployed for an extended period of time, deplete their savings on rent and bills, fall short and/or behind on payments, and watch their credit score plummet. Once working again, they will live frugally and put any extra they have into catching those bills up as quickly as possible. They may even take on a second job to expedite this. We’re seeing this, en masse, right now because the pandemic has shuttered businesses and put people out of work or cut their hours to the barest minimum. A dollar can only stretch so far, but late fees still pile up. No matter how much you tell creditors you can only afford a certain amount, they still come back with a figure so far above your limit, yet think they’re doing you a favor. You’re still going to pay them something every month, which is a hell of a lot better than nothing at all. But nope, not good enough.

What the actual frig, man? I'd be rockin' a rusted-out Civic with bald-ass tires in the two weeks' time I'd still be working for those crusty asshats.

Is there any chance that the employee was a traveling salesperson? Something where the car they drive affects their business? (OTOH, ever hear of a company car?)

Wow. No meeting would be necessary for me. The reply to that email would be my 2 weeks notice.

Oh wow, well that would be printed asap and taken to the closest lawyer that the annual salary would pay for and I'd own the damn company AND dealership when I was done, but only drive that VP's car for amusement.

Wow. I've never been anything but poor. But even if I wasn't, I doubt my 'drive it until it's not worth fixing' policy would ever change.

Thank you for this written proof. Now if I get fired I can say it was due to my car and sue you and contact the news media so you get all the nice PR also. Sincerely, Employee #12345/9

If your company's clients can see you driving an old beater, that could negatively impact your employers image. Thais is why you should drive a nice car, but the company should pay some of the costs.

Nobody is safe from mean management practices in the workplace, regardless of how much you love or hate your job. But let’s be honest, the more pressure we have put on our shoulders, the less motivated we are to add that extra bit of effort to the company we work for.

And although this can happen for many different reasons, mean managers can be a huge setback for us professionally and emotionally. But how you determine whether the management has indeed crossed the line? Buzzwords like toxic workplace are all over the place, but when it comes to real life, most of us are left scratching our heads.

Rude behavior toward employees is generally defined as a display of disrespect, a breaking of social norms or expectations, a breach of etiquette, or ignoring "accepted" behavior. It can also mean that a manager is behaving inconsiderately, aggressively, or deliberately offensively.

CityBuildingWitch Report

Rudeness can manifest in many forms, from passive-aggressive behavior, micromanaging, anger management problems, to favoritism towards one person, bullying, and many more. The mean behavior can also be used as a way to display one’s power and show superiority over others, and in this case, as well as others, you'd better run far away from it.

In such cases, setting boundaries is key. Everyone should learn to distance themselves from a manager who’s mean to them and, at some point, stop taking in all the negativity. In other cases, if you are sure that your boss is incompetent, it’s just reasonable to become a leader on your own.

Management will notice your initiative eventually, and you will likely earn some extra points just by keeping the mean person out of the loop.

Despite the wording, it's mainly addressed to people who are too lazy to clean up after them.

Whatever happens, make yourself a top priority. It’s just not fair to allow yourself to be treated badly and purposefully disrespected day by day by someone who has no reason to do so. In some extreme cases, even the best reasoning is not an excuse for anyone to shout or offend you, whether it’s a co-worker, a manager, or a boss.

From the "Why deal with a problem by speaking directly with those involved when you can make everyone miserable?" school of management.
