Dogs Are Not Allowed On NYC Subway Unless They’re In A Carrier…So This Happened
Some rules are meant to be followed, and some are expected to be broken. The regulations, in this case, are clear when it comes to carrying animals on the NYC subway. “No person may bring any animal on or into any conveyance or facility unless enclosed in a container.” It looks like there’s no room for interpretation, right? But the New York subway rules say nothing about the size of the animal or the form of the dog carrier, and as you can see from this picture, some people are quick to exploit that fact to avoid a fine for not following the rules of public transport use.
This guy and his husky were recently captured riding the subway by CBS news producer Alex Romano, and it’s hard not to smile when you look at it. Perhaps it’s the not-so-covert nature of the operation. Perhaps it’s the casual pose. Or perhaps it’s simply the fact that the guy is carrying a large dog in a tote bag. Whatever the reason, we love it.

We cannot be responsible for what others understand... only for what they read. I say HOORAY for them if they can safely transport their loved animal to where it needs to go. A lot of New Yorkers don't have cars and this IS their only mode of transport. I'm glad to see it works, beats leaving the dog where it isn't safe. :D
Actually a good rule... Lessen the chance of fecal matter and urine being everywhere.

I live in Bombay and I can easily understand why metro city dwellers do these sort of things. In fact its heartening to see people caring for their loved ones and still managing to follow rules.
If that's the rule, then surely all you need is a container that just has a couple of handles on the back (it's a carrier then) and lets them stick their legs out so they can walk, after all, there's nothing in that quote above that states they have to actually be carried.

Brilliant. Some people shouldn't be allowed on trains and still they are on trains. This is perfect.
I think the people are ingenious. Also, what about service or emotional support animals. Many of these are a larger breed. I'm an animal lover and don't think it's a reasonable law.
There are exemptions for service animals. I don't know about emotional support animals. You could not ask a blind man to carry his seeing eye dog.

They are following the rules. I don't mind dogs travelling with me on public transit but don't want legs lifting on the poles or arguments. If they happily ride in a tote bag, I'm all for it. Mine hates being left alone.
There are also homeless dogs in NYC that also know how to take the train. Now they can't even sneak in a ride.

it's hard for me to take a carry up the stairs and down the stairs. my dog is big bog. but I like the idea of buying a bag I guess that's what I have to do .and one other thing dogs and cats are family MTA
A roller bag, suitcase, etc. Cut hole in top for their head. Easier than carrying
There are a lot of places where dogs are not allowed where I wish dogs WERE allowed but some people were NOT allowed.
I remember years ago there was a dog who rode the 7th Ave IRT all by himself. He got on in Greenwich Village, rode uptown, then came back later in the day. Did it for years.
I feel sorry for these poor pets and it's great these owners figured out a way to take them on the train.

Pets walking on leash, looking cute while in a tote bag with no way of fastening the dog inside, or cradled in an IKEA bag with their limbs and head protruding in an attempt to create a loophole do not abide by the rule and are subject to fine and refusal of admittance. The myth perpetuated by popular media articles and social media photos that claims these are acceptable carriers for dogs on the subway understates the risk of danger for the pets as well as people on the subway. One dog might get spooked and flee from their owner.
A dog is an animal, you people carrying the dogs will not be responsible for their waste, nor if they bite someone. I like dogs, but you need to find another mode of transportation for them. I was on the train 2 days ago and a baby was terrified of a pit bull. Enough is enough! The world does not revolve around you. If You were bit or traumatized you would be crying for the law to do something! Obey the law.
That is so stupid. I get that people are scared of dogs but needing a carrier for a dog to go on a train? A leash is enough to keep a dog away from people on a train.

I am probably the only one that is against this I love legal loopholes and effing the government but people have a right to feel safe and not every dog (although most probably) are safe in public and there's a lot of owners who think he's fine and wrong. People are scared of dogs especially large dogs. The cage isn't meant to inconvenience you it's to keep everything and everyone safe
Agreed. The rule is there for the protection of everyone, including the pet. Apparently many on here have never been on a NYC subway train during rush hour. It is sometimes horrible crowded. Imagine how a pet would feel getting stepped on, pushed or even crushed. Then also imagine the emotional state of the pet. The pet which maybe would never bite anyone, might feel threatened and bite. Pets also tend to sometimes pee or defecate at inconvenient times. It is bad enough that people pee on the subway platforms. The pet may want to as well (or worse, inside the subway car). And finally, some people are highly allergic to some pets. If the subway car is crowded and you cannot move and you are allergic, you could trigger an asthma attack. All in all, you want to take your pet, take a cab or another carrying case (on wheels if a large dog or smaller carrying bag if a smaller dog).

That's one of the stupidest comments I've heard. What has party affiliation got anything to do with common sense rules regarding the transport of animals/pets using public transport? It is a public safety and health issue. It is also better for the pet as a crowded subway car where the can get stepped on or for doors to close on a pet on a leash with the pet and their owner on opposite sides. Kindly think things through before you blurt out reactionary nonsense. And by the way, New York has had Republican, Democratic and independent mayors and it's a very well run city since the mid 80s (improving and prospering since).
