Guy Asks If He’s A Jerk For Laughing In Neighbor’s Face After She Suggested Swapping Apartments In All Seriousness
Moving into a new apartment can be a very exciting time. You finally found the perfect place, and now you have the chance to make it your own. Fill the walls with beautiful artwork, cram the shelves with knick-knacks, and turn your humble abode into a cozy little oasis for you and your fur babies. One unfortunate thing about moving is that you never know who your neighbors are going to be. In many situations, we don’t need to interact with the fellow residents of our building or neighborhood at all, but sometimes people just go out of their way to make our lives harder…
One man who recently relocated to Orlando, Florida, shared a story on the “Am I The Jerk?” subreddit detailing an encounter he had with a new neighbor who felt entitled to insert her opinion on his living situation. Below, you can read the full story that the Florida resident posted, and then let us know in the comments what you think of his nosy neighbor. Then after you finish this article, if you’re interested in reading some more stories from Bored Panda featuring neighbor drama, check out this list next.

I can understand having an issue with people hoarding wealth or resources, but that does not mean we are all entitled to insert our own opinions on it. And I would definitely not consider a single man and two dogs living in a two-bedroom apartment hoarding space. Maybe if the author of this post had rented out an entire floor of the apartment building, then I would see where this mother is coming from. But to have one extra room that is being utilized as an office space seems perfectly reasonable. In fact, that is the exact setup that I have in my two-room apartment, and I could not even imagine a family of four in there.
Plus, it is in no way this resident’s fault that the family could not find a larger apartment. I’m sure if they searched hard enough or looked in a less expensive area, they would be able to find more space. Having four people in a one-bedroom apartment actually seems worse than having one person in a larger apartment. Overcrowding can lead to unsanitary conditions, safety risks and a decreased quality of life. In fact, in Florida, the general rule is that no more than two people can live in a one-bedroom apartment and no more than four people can live in a two-bedroom, so I wonder if this mother’s landlord actually is aware that there is a full family occupying that space.
I completely understand the frustration of having a difficult time finding the perfect apartment; I’m sure that is a challenge in many parts of the world right now with current inflation rates. However, it is not the fault of everyone else who was lucky enough to find a great place to live. Some commenters recommended that the author of this post makes sure his doorbell camera is always working to ensure his safety from this family, which I don’t think is a bad idea. But I also hope that this issue subsides and he can go back to enjoying his peaceful, work-from-home life with his two dogs. Have you ever had to deal with an intrusive neighbor like this? We would love to hear your thoughts down below, and if you have any similar experiences, feel free to share them as well.
Commenters have assured the man that he did nothing wrong, and that his neighbor should mind her own business
How did the OP "steal" the apartment by applying, putting his name on the waitlist, waiting the 6 months [presumably not berating people who were ahead of him on the waitlist for stealing a spot in line ahead of him] signing the lease, and moving in before this family?
You could live in a 4 bedroom apartment all by yourself with zero animals and it wouldn't be any of her f*****g business.
BINGO. As long as you're paying the rent, you're good.

It's going to blow her mind if she literally finds out anything

Yeah. A lot of folks post on AITA when there's no way on earth people would find them TA. This sounds more like a post for r/entitledparents.
Load More Replies...I'd cut the conversation on why do I need two bedrooms if I live by myself! Absolutely none of anyone's business!
Nah! That's the time for the fun answers!!! "I have so many sex toys they needed their own room" Stuff like that not only shuts them down fast allowing you to escape, but the look on their face keeps you entertained for awhile.
Load More Replies...I lived alone in a rented 4-bedroom house for a couple of years because it was close to work and no more expensive than a single bedroom apartment at the time. When a coworker gave me a ride home after an out-of-town meeting, she asked how many roommates I had. She was shocked that I didn't have any. Yet no one thought anything of it when I later bought a three bedroom house. People have strange opinions.
When my husband and I started looking to buy a house, we were living in a 2 bedroom rental (one bedroom, one shared office). We did not plan to have children. We could've been quite happy in a 2 bedroom house, but many of our friends and family advised us to look at 3 bedrooms because they're a better value long term. Most people want at least 3 bedrooms because they have kids, so resale is better on the 3 bedroom house. Maybe that's why people aren't surprised you bought one. Though, as an aside, like OP I'm so glad for the extra room now that my husband and I do so much working from home. We each have our own dedicated offices. I could totally use three bedrooms on my own, too. I'd have one office and one for exercise (rather than exercising in my office), or a room for projects, or a guest room. I'm pretty sure I could use a 4th if I put my mind to it.
Load More Replies...I’ve lived in a 2 bedroom apartment for years. I lived alone up until 3 years ago when my husband moved in and now we have a baby. I never had a complaint, but I would have also laughed in someone’s face had they suggested that
You might want to document any more interactions with her. Keep any information or proof you might need if she gets more abusive.
THE AUDACITY of some people man! I sometimes really don't understand people like her. it such a kid mentality where " its not fair you have the bigger slice" kind of thing. Sorry for the little rant.
Neighbor invested in having children. OP invested in having property and pets. We make our choices and pay for them. Nobody owes us for this. OP, you're not the AH but your neighbor and Desantis sure are!
You could have a massive mansion if you could afford it and she shouldn’t f*****g care
I do the exact same thing. I work from home part of the week and I need a second room for my office stuff. I have 2 computers, a shredder, a headset, 2 tables with document boxes...i don't want that in my living room. I actually have a 3 bedroom. The middle room i use as a closet. I didn't need it but it was actually cheaper than the 2 bedroom because it had older appliances and more issues. But I don't give a F what anyone thinks about that and it's no one's business. It's your choice to have 3 kids, not mine. If I was going to have kids, I'd understand it's going to be harder to find a larger place within my budget so I might have to do bunk beds for a while until we can find something bigger. The market sucks everywhere right now. It's not someone else's fault because you were there before them. Lady sounds like a nutjob.
This was one of those "bish please" moments. She's acting like he's paying cheaper rent because he's single, meanwhile he's paying a higher amount in rent for the two bedrooms vs a one bedroom. He's not stealing but someone definitely stole this lady's common sense.
All the apartments in my building are two bedroom and my neighbor has always lived by himself. Its now just me and my wife after my daughter moved out, and since I have been remote the extra bedroom is now my office. I used to work in an area between my kitchen and living room and could never escape the job since it was always in sight. I think its mentally necessary for remote workers to find a space away from the general area of their home to work at, otherwise you are never leaving the office. Otherwise, why cant people mind their own business. Why do people think that others are supposed to make sacrifices for someone elses family? No one told her to accept the one bedroom for a family of 4. One of my other neighbors has 8 people living in a two bedroom but I think that has been typical for a while do to the high cost of living in my area.
Definitely NTA. I also had the one bedroom to sleep in, one bedroom as an office situation when I was in an apartment (I was in college at the time). With how much stuff I accumulated over eight years of living there, the second room was also nice for the extra amount of storage space.
The only time I would see that as an issue is if they were low income apartments. Usually there are rules reserving the two or more bedroom apartments for families. That makes sense in that situation but he since he does not mention it being low-income then I assume that would not apply.
I get c**p all the time about living in my 4 BR 2k sq ft house by myself, as if I'm obligated to have shared walls for the rest of my life because of my preference to live alone. I find it hard to believe she couldn't find another 2 bedroom in all of Orlando. Ridiculous.
He should talk to the complex because I've never heard of anyone being allowed to rent a one bedroom for 4 people. I'll bet the complex doesn't even know there are 4 there.
It would not matter how many people lived in his apartment, it's none of the neighbor's business. It is not his fault that she could only get a one bedroom for her family of four. People need to stop blaming others for why they can't take care of their business. He needs to watch out for her because there's no telling what she might do next.
oh? What is that? A mother using her children as an excuse to justify something? AGAIN? The audacity of some people is unbelievable. Why cant they mind their own business? These parents were the one who decided to live in this apartment. They put themselves in this situation. Figure it out, you're supposed to be two grown up people. Not kids who want to swap toys.
My ex~In-laws built a 3 BR house and convinced their kids to live with them to pay it off. Brother was a pothead with a wife and two very young kids. He never paid rent. the inlaws went after my husband and I for 'extra' rent since we didn't have kids (though they bitched if we rented a movie because that took milk away from 'the babies'). I told them to f*****g pound sand. Also, they forced us out of OUR ROOM to give to the 'grandbabies'. Needless to say, neither the arrangement nor the marriage lasted past that point.
Load More Replies...You should have turned around and walked as soon as she used the word "stole". (Unless, like some of us, you come prepared and have a whipped cream pie concealed about your person.)
We waited one month for an apartment. I told them whatever opens up first because we needed to move closer to work asap. It just so happened that the first thing available was one of largest units be with a nice view of the lake. First come first serve I guess. Could have done without the view. Could have also done without the 3 flights of stairs.
Whew. I bet she'd be really fired up if she knew I lived in a 4 bedroom house rent free with my two kids and no spouse. I guess I should just move out so a bigger family can move in. How selfish of me.
It never hurts to ask. It does hurt, howeverz to react to "no" with a tantrum. Also, why is it that she didn't rent a 2 bedroom? Even if there's a wait-list, she could have put her name on it even if she had to rush into the one bedroom.
More people having kids they cannot properly care for. Then expecting others to help out.
NOT TA! This is my first response on her so I hope I don't overstep....As a Florida resident myself I know the cost of apartment living has gotten a bit crazy over the last few years BUT if they could not find a 2 bedroom apt at the time they were looking then you go smaller until you can get into something bigger. Not sure why she thought that 1. You could actually exchange apts without going through management is beyond me (that would be if you actually said yes) and 2. That she had the nerve to ask you. I will say this though..you should let management know what's going on because from personal experience when a neighbor is completely unrealistic & such she could start making your life difficult with them. (Had a neighbor who did this because she didn't like living "under 2 rowdy teenage boys". (Her words btw-not mine.) She complained about us monthly until eventually calling the cops saying I was abusing my children. She ended up getting evicted and arrested. Keep FAR away!
You should have given her the governor's office e-mail address and wished good luck, too. For now, you may want to report this incident to your apartment manager. That woman just isnt right in the head.
Tell her it's not your fault she screwed herself into cramped living conditions.
No question. She's the AH for being that entitled. No one, literally no one, owes you something because you have a family and kids. And asking a single person to put themselves out for your family is supremely selfish. You just know if he did it she wouldn't have been grateful. She felt she was owed it.
I'm surprised that nobody had mentioned why the lady wouldn't have told the landlord that she was up for moving into a bigger apartment when one came up for rent. Wouldn't that have solved her problem? But I would definitely mention the conversation to the landlord, because this could definitely turn into something where she is constantly complaining about him and lying about it. So the landlord should be given a notice of what just occurred
Why weren't you there to provide her and her husband with education on birth control?? The size of her apartment and the size of her family is not your concern. There are MANY sites and apps out there to help them find suitable living conditions for their situation. NTA!!
I have a 2 BR, den, living room, dining room, 2 full bath and lavatory with a screened lanai for my 3 cats and I. My complex also has a pool. If one of my neighbors without the lanai and den insisted that I "stole" my place from them, I would certainly show them what rathole that they could start their new career pounding sand into!
I love the part where she said she was gonna report OP to DeSantis. Uhhhh, good luck with that. Honestly, this person is an idiot. When I rented an apartment while my current house was being built, I wanted to rent a garage as well. There were none available, so I didn't. That's the way life works. Too bad, so sad.
It's not communism when the individual wants what you have. It's *greed*.
Load More Replies...Oh boy, do I wish this happened to me! I would tell her I would be willing to help her out a d start clipping other 1 bedroom apt listings so that she could rent a 2nd one bedroom apartment with the added advice that her husband and kids definitely need as much space away from her as possible.
Our “system” such as it is, doesn’t consider need, only money. I understand being resentful of that, but the woman with the family was wrong.
? Do you have any idea how much of every tax dollar goes to people in need? How many billions are given to charity every year? There is low income housing available in nearly every city of significant population. Further, there are a large number of places I can't afford to live in. You know how I deal with it? I choose not to live there.
Load More Replies...Should have said one that you regularly throw large wild parties and you need the room.
Many years ago, when we were living in a nice (tract) house in the suburbs of San Francisco, an acquaintance of Spouse came by to talk about a project or borrow something... His wife wandered out to our back yard. They lived in an apartment in San Francisco. She started going on, more snidely than wistfully, about all the room we had. Well, lady, you're living in an expensive city and we're living in the burbs, 20 miles south of Expensive City. You could move.
I do not understand when it became ok to open your mouth and spew your envy and jealousy on another person. My home, rented or owned, is my sanctuary. Any individual chooses where and how they want to live. If she didn't like her choice she needs to choose again. Her behavior was offensive and probably fit the legal definition of harassment if she keeps it up. Avoid, her, record all future contact and see if you can get a restraining order if needed-she is unstable.
NTA: she knows she has a big family yet picked a 1 bedroom apartment? There were NO other affordable apartments ANYWHERE in the area with multi bedrooms?
NTA nor TJ. I met two people who one after his divorce, rented a two-bedroom: one for himself and one that he turned into an office, just like yours. The other was a family friend who rented a three-bedroom townhouse: she took the master bedroom, turned the other rooms into a guest room and the other into an office. It's fair to say that they make a good income to even rent a four bedroom place and turn the extra room into a mini gym, so this lady is frustrated and bitter with the amount of income that only allows her and her family afford a one bedroom. Oh well... that's life! Or maybe, just maybe, the husband is the only one with income in that household so it is what it is. So, enjoy your two-bedroom 'cause you work for it and don't stop the lifestyle you're living 'cause your bitter-frustrated-she needs prayer neighbor has a problem.
His living situation is simply none of her business. End of conversation. And if I was him I would let the office know about the situation that way if it escalates he has a record of their interaction. I think she definitely has a screw loose.
Nah, you are definitely not the a..hole. She sounds like a Karen to me. Some people who choose to breed just feel entitled over the rest of us, for no reason.
This is a prime example of why I generally hate people! The amount of entitlement out there is disgusting and intolerable. People just have no shame or filter or whatever. It's okay to think this way but not every thought should be expressed out loud. Excuse me while I buy some land in the middle of the woods far away from "civilization".
I have three bedrooms and no roommates or pets. I paid cash for it. If she wants it, she's free to make a reasonable offer for it.
In most parts of the country it's illegal to have 4 people living in a one bedroom apartment.
My life is a perfect example of this situation: married w/0 kids. 3 bedrm house. DH’s mom lives w/us so we need a bigger house for her. The smallest bedroom is mine. I craft for E?!@, so I need my own space. We didn’t want kids. Family dynamics have not 1 single thing to do with how much living space you need.
Where or how well a person lives is nobody else's business. Writer makes a good point about people having "an issue with someone hoarding wealth or resources"; as long as the wealth or resources were obtained legally, it's again nobody else's business.
Wtf do you smoke or drink in the States that make some people feel this entitled to everything?
I don't know, I think there is something in the water there in Floriduh.
Load More Replies...And if the bigger apt is so important to her why doesn't she just get on the waiting list so she eventually gets it?
Ugh, Florida. Seriously? Such entitlement. Good for OP for sticking it to her.
Yikes. Are people really this petty and obtrusive? Should we have prefaced this "Florida Woman..."?
I get that the woman might be frustrated but I'd suggest that most reasonable people would understand that it isn't OPs fault or responsibility to rectify. Then theres the fact that there are people who live in mansions that could house a dozen families. This is a social issue and ironically the person she's complaining to (the governor) bears far more responsibility than OP and is in a far better position to fix it.
She wasn't complaining to the governor, he was joking when he suggested to her that she complain to the ah governor.
Load More Replies...I wonder if it's possible the neighbor came from a place where apartments are allocated according to family size and hasn't become used to the market system.
I think my favorite part is that she is going to report him to DeSantis. She must be from another place other than Florida because only the socialist/communists would believe the governor would have any say so in this situation. Or she might be from a place where lawlessness reigns and people do these kinds of things to each other.

This "Karen" is just rude, stupid, and thinks she's Entitled ! NONE OF HER BUSINESS ! You're paying for a 2 bedroom YOUR BUSINESS IF karen REALLY WANTS A 2 BED SHE SHOULD CONTACT THE BULDING OFFICE AND ASK TO BE PUT ON A WAITING LIST , FOR A 2 BEDROOM TO OPEN UP ! They clearly HAD one, you rented it. Once she is on the waiting list and finds out that they will require a cleaning fee, because they don't want to loose revenue, SHE WILL B***H ABOUT THAT TOO .
Complete bullsheetz. Shame on panda. Horribly written dribble. DeSatan sycophant. You want to hear a true DeSatan story, the diary of Ann Frank and dictionaries have been banned in Florida schools by DeSatans stop woke law.
This woman is a NUT!! As an animal lover, PLEASE protect your pets! Wouldn't put it past her demented mind to do something HORRIFIC!!! Video any encounters with her!!
As a single female when I lived in Dallas with 2 cats, I always had to have a two bedroom to be able to have washer/dryer hookups. I worked very irregular retail hours and wanted my own washer and dryer in my apartment. That woman needs to get on with herself!
I don't get it I am sure her and her husband is sleeping in the bedroom and the two kids is in the living room. How about take this time and bond with your kids. Really you can't bully people to do as you want them to do.
It is crazy I was looking for a 3 bedroom for me my daughter and son. My daughter decided to move in with her fiance so now I am looking for a 2 bedroom for me and my son. My stuff is in storage and we are staying at my mom's. My mom have this office space room that she put a twin bed in it so me and my 1 year old have somewhere to sleep. It's stressful but I am not going around trying to talk ppl out of their 2 bedrooms. My goddaughter and her husband lives in a 2 bedroom. They use their 2nd room as an office room. My daughter and her fiance has a 2 bedroom apartment. They had it before they knew they was pregnant. Unless I am willing to move out of my state it's hard to fine a nice size place for me and my son in my budget, where I live in Pgh. My sister moved to a 1 bedroom with her husband and their 4 kids until they found a bigger place in their budget area. They lived there for almost 2 years and was patient. Her boss loved her attitude and helped them buy a house.
Your first mistake was introducing yourself. Me and my neighbors are on a wave at each other only policy. When i walk around my neighborhood i have my earbuds in and i don't make eye contact with anyone. If that makes me a jerk then so be it. I still have my privacy
I have 3 kids, looking for a place with another bedroom that can handle our needs is hard.... because I need an office since I work remotely, the kids are loud af. NTA, work remotely you are ENTITLED to a home office if you can get the room. Again, nta home office is essential.
.maybe if she helped him locate and bankroll and affordable conviently located workspace as well as help with transport cost...IM SURE HE'D BE OK WITH STITCHING that might work better than being rude and berating the person you want to do uou a favor
No, laughing doesn't make you an a*****e. Her attitude sounds like what I encountered in Germany when I lived there. One potential landlord suggested that I might be running a brothel, because I was single and interested in multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. I anticipated lots of American guests. The neighbor's suggestion was out of line, but then all you could say was "no". She might have scored her family a more spacious home. Nobody forced them to move in there. All of her extreme comments were overly dramatic and none of her business.
NTA, why shes all up in your business is beyond me, but you pay for your 2 bdrm apt which is exactly what she could have done. No one told her to rent a 1 bdrm so not your problem.
NTA- It's the audacity for me. Tell her this is not "Friends" and you did not loose a bet. There will be no switching apartments!
Crazy people like her think society owes them. Why don't they think about what they can afford or what lifestyle they want to maintain before having kids? There was an incident of some guy in the UK adopting so many kids he demanded the govern give him a bigger house! All this time, he didn't work!
Jeesh NTA. If it ever happens again with anyone else maybe he should just say it's a 1 bedroom with office ... But it's no one's business.
She IS the crazy person!! You are absolutely not in the wrong, stay far away from her, avoid all interactions, and if you do interact...RECORD IT
He's not the a*****e here but she's definitely a Karen, my guess her family didn't have a 2 bedroom budget wich is why she couldn't find one.
More than likely the husband put the wife up to this. Directly or indirectly. She may be expressing her frustration of the tight confines of the 1BR. Husband most likely signed the lease & is paying & she is stuck with the situation. It is legal to rent a 1 BR to a family of 4 w very young children in cribs. She may not know she can be put on a waiting list for a 2 BR. Renting may be new - this may be the result of financial difficulties. OP could have explained or validated. But not laughed. That's just rude, imo. (I am a renter & live in subsidized housing: our arts are usually studios or 1BR w an occ Bldg w/2BR (~1 or 2 units depends on bldg size). Our units are 25 -50% smaller than standard. But we don't have a choice of "upgrading to larger except from Studio to 1BR if one can afford it. Gov. Dictates what size allowed except for Medical exceptions(live in Aide). Going from Homeowner to Subsidized Apts due to becoming disabled or for financial reasons can happen to anyone. So maybe be a bit more kind. Housing stinks.
Get a camera from every angle you can! That b#$(@! is crazy! I agree with another commentary, 'perfect example of how people with kids think they are owed/entitled!'
i live in orlando and i used live in an apartment complex for a while by myself maybe for about 6 years before i finally decided to buy a house (rent here is really expensive) and i am glad i never encountered such a nasty and nosy neighbor. i remember that my apt complex would not allow a people to live in 1 bedroom apt. but that was before though, i dont know now because post-covid the population of central florida doubled.
I think there may be four in a one bedroom because that is all they can afford. I know that means she couldn't afford to swap with this guy. I think she's just frustrated and looking for someone to blame.
Def agree he should let mgmt know. She is going to be a problem.
So is dis lady really serious so how in the world do you swapp apartments where do dey do dat at
I live in area that has wait lists on all apts. I. Was planning on moving down in dec a few years ago. My parents who also lived there started looking. Some apts here no pets. I have 2 cats. They found an apt that had just come available and paid for the 2 months before I could get down here. A 2 bedroom. If I move to a smaller apt same complex I have to pay another deposit for me and my cats so about $700. That neighbors a joke. With wait-lists you take what you can and don't b#### if someone got better than you. I've been on one wait-list for a very nice apt for low income.for 4 years and I'm still the 10th person down the list. The list is now 7 pages long. Nobody wants to move out because they're very nice. Hoping to get one soon.
You are a lot nicer than me, lol. Because she is a neighbour I would have walked away pretty quick before getting angry 😂
The down right audacity and entitlement of some people is outrageous. Downright shameless even. F that lady. Literally too bad so sad
This may have qlready been Saud but. SHE WAS APPARENTLY THEIR BEFORE HE MOVED IN SO MY QUESTION IS WHY DIDN'T SHE GO FOR (SWITCH TO )THE 2 BEDROOM WHILE IT WAS EMPTY? SHE MAY HAVE BEEN MADE TO SINGN A NEW LEASE BUT SINCE SHE WOULD NOT BE LEAVING THE COMPLEX, IHAVE MY DOUBT SHE WOULD BE CONSIDERED AS BREACHING OR BE PINISHED. I CALL BS!!!
Trumptards. I tell you. Of course you're NTA. She just wants to control you. That's literally their MAGA.
What does Desantis have to do with it? Just slipping in some political hate eh? Moron.
He was inviting her to complain at someone else who has absolutely nothing to do with the situation. A "scream at the sky" if you will.
Load More Replies..."left her there screaming like a crazy person." You ever wonder how much narrative bias seeps into these things? Or how true they are to begin with? Or how many were intentionally created to push an agenda and demonize a particular group of people?
A little flavor text is not the same as making something up. She may or may not have screamed, but she's obviously either not sane or quite unintelligent to think this way. It's also pretty obvious when stories are fiction, if you pay attention and understand basic psychology.
Load More Replies...Yeah this is one of these annoying AITH posts where OP knows beyond doubt they are not the as$hole. Just fishing for praise.
Yeah this is one of these (it's "those" btw) annoying comments where they know they're assuming. Some people may actually wonder if they are an a*****e for laughing, as op did, or any number of other things.
Load More Replies...It's obviously not his fault and it was definitely wrong of her to go off at him like that. But you don't laugh at a difficult situation. It is often hard to find bigger apartments and I understand her frustration. She was out of line (probably out of frustration) but a firm no would be enough. Her complaints won't make any difference and we all know that since she is in the wrong. But have some compassion and don't laugh at that.
Yet another ASSumption. I have known people like this, I have had a similar conversation with a neighborhood psycho.
